The following annotated catalog is intended to <-onlain a list of ail the species
known to inhaliit the designated rejiion with the addition of a few whicl, approaeli
the lioiiiidary so closely and whose aflinities are Arctic, rather than lioreal. that
it is highly prohahle that on further sei.rch their raiini' will he found to cr' it.

It is intended that the synonymy cited shall he conii)rehensive, , ■ ijr
references to the oriuinal description, to good *inures. and to the data of >-
graphical distrihution which has necessarily been taken from the lit. rat'ue. The
material examined hy the writer emliraces the entire collections < ' tin Victoria
Memorial Museum and the l'. S. National Museum; hut in mai ;'!iscs it has
lieeii necessary to take the data from the literature. < \n ially tha; •! ihe early
writers, and it follows that tlie present writer assume' responsihii.ty for the
identification of species so derived. I'sually, however, ihere is ko particular
reason for douhting the accuracy of these identitications, except in a very few
case-, to which attention is directed in connection with the discussion of the
specie- involved.

The oliject of this work is to sum uj) the known Isopod fauna of arctic
North America. This has involved an exiimination not only of the sju ies
ohtaiiH'd within this area, hut also of the adjacent region to the w.'st, east and
south. The result is thit the work includes a siimmary of our present Knowledge
of the l-opoda for that reitioii of North America limited on the Alaskan shore
line to the winter Mne of IliKitiiii: ice and iiassiiig southward iiideliiiitely in deep
water; northward emhraciiig arctic Al;iska and Canada and restricted on the
east Canadian coast to the lit)' parallel. In considering the very interesting
complex of the 'lavis strait fauna. I have follow 'd Dr. II. J. Hai I'li's masterly
treatment of the area, and include in my rejiort only those species which have

as a saiid-burrowiiif; was|)). The makilifi of the burrow-track is thus etfeeted,
in a similar way as with lApi'liinix (lUiritdis (fuliaceous legs); while the free-
swimminfi in the water of these lilnthni (probably all younger stafres of the
common /. intoiiKni) is effected by the lo.if; body-) walking)-lej;s (see October 14,
liH;!). The colour of these youiin Iilotlnn (found today) is as follows: rnifonnly
ciiticula-brown with black eyes and i)i(;meiit (dark brown) dorsally (stronRcst
on forepart of head, alon>i middle-dorsal and as a cross-band just in front of
the telson). While these younjr filtillna thus are eomnmn at the l)each around
lier(>, I nave only found very few of the fullKrown ones, livinj; her' (compare
the extremely common occurrence of the latter ones in the littoral rejiioii of the
Alaskan Arctic ("oast ).

Asia: Miers records "a large series of both sexes from the s a of .Mourman,
near the Venissei gulf, Siberia, collected hy the Swedish Expedition of 187")-7().

Distribution: This species has !,eei. recorded from ne.ar the mouth of the
Venissei gulf westward in the Kara .sea, .Jugor Schar, the west coast of Novaya
Zembia, and West Spitzbergeii. In North America it has been recorded on the
east coast from West Greenland, (Iodhavn, latitude ti!t° 14' N., southward.
This s])ecies generally occurs in rather low water among the stones, stuid, alga',
etc., iiut has been taken from a dcpl^i of 111 fathoms (S. I. Smith). Ohlin
describes the colour ,is "a uniform dark olive green, scimetimcs on the epimeres
with a trace of ])urplish spots."
