Newsl. 16. 1989 FIRST KEW INTERNATIONAL COMPOSITAE CONFERENCE (KWICC)-1994 PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT A major international conference on the biology, chemistry, systematics and utilization of the Compositae will be held at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew on 24 July—S August 1994. It will be organized into the following symposia and sections. 1. Genome to Phenome to Phylogeny (i, genomic organization and and evolution of structural/functional complexes; v, floral biology and functional palynology; vi, ecology and physiology of dormancy, germination and establishment; vii, genomic evolution and evolutionary strategies; viii, ontogeny and evolution — interpretation in modular organisms; ix, ontogeny and systematics — a guide to polarity 7). 2. Family and Tribal Relationships (i, evidence from structure; ii, evidence from micromolecular data; iii, evidence from semantides,; iiii, data analysis — problems of interpretation and integration in systematic data-analysis). 3. Advances in Tribal Systematics (for each of the 13 tribes — Mutisieae, Lactuceae, Vernonieae, Liabeae, Cardueae, Arctotideae, Inuleae, Astereae, Anthemideae, Calenduleae, Heliantheae, Eupatorieae, Senecioneae — ii, overview of systematics since 1975; ii, overview of chemistry since 1975; iii, overview of cytology and genetics since 1975). 4. Advances in Utilization (i, from ethnobotany to industry — drugs and pesticide development; ii, oils, resins and latex; iii, foodcrop developments and potential new crops; iiii, ornamentals — breeding and other developments in the major cultivated genera; v, composite weeds — importance, evolution, control and pathogenicity; vi, Compositae in environmental conservation — friends and foes). 5. Dealing with Data (i, a "Genera Compositarum" as a data-base concept; li, inter-institutional cooperation and organization; iii, methods and structures; lili, problems of capture, storage, retrieval, integration and dissemination of taxonomic information.) 9) Comp. Newsl. 16. 1989 The aims of the Conference are: i, to stimulate research on Compositae during the next 5 years and provide an opportunity for its presentation; ii, to produce a volyme of papers supplementing and updating the 1975 Reading Symposium volume (Heywood, V. H., Harborne, J. B. & Turner, B. L. (eds), The Biology and Chemistry of the Compositae, Academic Press, 1977); iii, to promote the production of a Genera Compositarum as an international computer-based project, producing a modern treatment of the composites down to the generic level. To provide for the promotion and publication of research on the systematics of genera and groups of genera, a volume entitled "Advances in Compositae Systematics" will be published coincidentally with the opening of the Conference in July 1994. Papers to be included in this volume must be submitted no later than the 1 June 1993 and are solicited now. For further information, please contact: Mr C. Jeffrey, Herbarium, Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, Richmond, Surrey TW9 3AE, U. K. (tel. 01-940-1171). REQUESTS FOR MATERIAL Dr. Arun K. Pandey, Department of Botany, Bhagalpur University, Bhagalpur 812007, India, is working on the systematic embryology of Inuleae. He would appreciate obtaining viable seeds and preserved material for study. Dr. Robert E. Perdue, Jr., Agricultural Research Service, USDA, Beltsville, MD 20705, coordinates an international program on development of Vernonia galamensis as a new industrial oilseed crop for semi-arid areas of the tropics and subtropics. He will appreciate receiving seed, documented with herbarium specimens if possible, especially from semi-arid locations. Small samples are acceptable; larger samples (5-10 gms) are preferred. Seed of other species of Vernonia are welcome, especially the large-seeded types that are highly productive. (For further information see article on op. 3) il : | Comp. Newsl. 16. 1989 3 VERNONIA GALAMENSIS: A POTENTIAL NEW CROP FOR SEMI-ARID AREAS OF THE TROPICS AND THE SUBTROPICS Robert E. Perdue, Jr. Agricultural Research Service, USDA Beltsville, MD 20705, U.S.A. Vernonia galamensis (Cass.) Less. (V. pauciflora (Willd.) Less.) is not just a promising new crop for Third-World farmers but one that may help reduce air pollution. This weedy annual is distributed in Africa from Senegal and Sierra Leone to Sudan and Ethiopia, and then south through Kenya and Tanzania to Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Some varieties grow in areas with generous rainfall, others in areas with as little as 8 inches. The seed contain 40% oil of which 80% is vernolic (a naturally epoxidized) fatty acid. Chemically, vernonia oil is similar to epoxidized soybean and linseed oils, but there is an important difference that can be exploited to avoid competiting with these agricultural products. The epoxidized oils are highly viscous; they are semi-solids at 50° F. and are non-pourable below 32° F. In contrast, vernonia oil has low viscosity; it is pourable even below 32° F. Research is underway at Eastern Michigan University’s Coating Research Institute to develope vernonia oil reactive diluents for alkyd-resin paints. CRI scientists believe that the low viscosity of the oil will permit its use as a solvent in these oil-based paints where, because of its chemistry, it will become part of the dry coating and not evaporate to pollute the air. CRI estimates that at least one pint of vernonia oil can be used in each of the 325 m gallons of alkyd-resin paint produced in the U. S. each year to reduce annual emissions of solvents that contribute to photochemical smog by at least 160 m pounds per year and create a market for the oil from at least 365,000 acres of vernonia. CRI research is sponsored by the South Coast Air Quality Management District, the pollution-control agency for the Los Angeles Basin, and the U. S. Agency for International Development. Other research, also focused on reactive diluents, is in progress at industrial laboratories in the U. S. and Germany. Vernonia oil is a versatile raw material and additional research is underway in university and industry laboratories on its use for lubricants and lubricant additives, manufacture of adhesives and epoxy-resins, and synthesis of dibasic acids currently obtained from petroleum and used in the manufacture of industrial nylons. Vernonia seed meal contains 40% protein. Research on the meal is in progress in three laboratories that hopefully will lead to its use as animal feed. Vernonia has been under evaluation as a new crop in Zimbabwe since 1983 where it has been a resounding success. Seed yield was 2227 pounds per acre in 1987, greater than the average yield of soybeans in the U. S. in 1979 (1926 pounds per acre), the best year for soybeans here from 1970 through 1984. Yield is maximized by "topping". Terminal buds are removed when plants are 6 inches high after which there are many branches from the base of the stem. A porous well-drained soil is essential. Vernonia will not grow on heavy clay. So far there has been no problems with insects, nematodes, or disease. In Zimbabwe, a cotton bollworm attacks the flowerheads but damage is not economic; no insect control is necessary. It appears to have natural resistance to pests and diseases. The leaves are extremely bitter; plants are not browsed by livestock. Vemonia tolerates full sun but can also grow in partial shade. It should be suitable for agroforestry - to serve as an annual cash crop while trees grow large enough for fuelwood. It is especially suitable for semi-arid areas where measures are taken to trap rainfall and control soil erosion. While V. galamensis is the best known source of vernolic acid, it is also produced by other species of old-world vernonias. Other species are being screened to determine if there is a superior source. Of special interest are the large-seeded types and perennials adapted to very dry areas. For recent taxonomic treatments of V. galamensis see M. G. Gilbert, Kew Bull. 41: 19-35 (1986) and C. Jeffrey, Kew Bull. 43: 229-231 (1988). = 4 Comp. Newsl. 16. 1989 Comp.
