INTRODUCTION.
CONWAY, MASS.
Prior to the Revolution that section of Deerfield known, as the "Southwest," and subsequently as Conway, seems to have had great attractions for our ancestors and others who flocked thither from Worcester, Barre, Grafton, Rutland, Leicester and other parts of Massachusetts, and there amid primeval forest and savage Indian took up their abode, reclaimed the soil, erected homes, carried on their trades and industries, and in five short years had the settlement set ot^' from Deerfield and incorporated as a separate and distinct township.
Previous to 1762 Conway was a vast wilderness without a single white inhabitant. It is said, however, that Timothy Rice, of Barre, came to this section of Deerfield as early as 1748, and that he was followed by Jonas Rice, of Barre, after 1756, and then by Cyrus Rice of the same town in 1762, followed by other branches of the family from Westboro, Worcester and other parts of Massachusetts. But the first to build a house and settle in Conway was Cyrus Rice, in 1762. All authorities on the subject agree upon the fact that Cyrus left his home in Barre early in the spring of 1762, came to this section of Deerfield, purchased a tract of land situated upon a high eminence overlooking the valley of the Connecticut River, cleared the ground, planted crops, and erected a log house of the trees that he had hewn down, and then in the fall of that year returned to Barre, and with his wife and five children and all his household elTects went back to Conway and there began life anew, his only neighbor being the red man of the forest.
But in a short time other settlers began to come in — among them being Israel Gates, Ebenezer Allis, Consider Arms, Elias Dickinson,' Thomas French, Isaac Wilder, Jonathan Whitney, Elisha Amsden, Solomon Field and John Boyden, men of stalwart characters and noble purpose in life, some of whose sons and daughters and descendants have illuminated the pages of history with deeds of honor and valor and made the world at large better for their having lived in it.
The little colony thus gathered soon strengthened in numbers and importance, until in 1767, when the people applied for and obtained a separation from Deerfield and became incorporated under the name of Conway. The first town meeting was held at the house of Thomas French, August 24, 1767, when Thomas French, Consider Arms, and Samuel Wells were chosen select-
men. Three weeks later provision was made for the estabUsh- nienl of preaching- and the erection of a meeting-house. Two years later the church was erected, and the Rev. John Emerson was installed as pastor of the Congregational Church, December 21. 1769. He remained its spiritual leader until June 26, 1828, when he w^as taken to his reward on high. During his pastorate he admitted 580 persons to the church, liaptized over 1,219 per- sons, and followed to the grave 1,037 ^^ ^^'^ flock. In 1778 a Baptist church was organized in the town with twenty-nine mem- bers, and a Methodist church was formed in May, 1852. When tidmgs reached Conway of the alarm at Lexington and the break- ing out of the Revolution, the citizens of the town gathered at their meeting-house and voted to sustain the Continental Congress and to support whatever measures they might put forth. At the alarm of Lexington, Conway responded with a large number of volunteers, many of whom laid down their lives for their coun- try. In the Massachusetts soldiers and sailors of the Revolution the names of 427 Rices appear upon the list from different parts of the. state.
A grist mill was built in Conway in the year 1774. followed by other industries which gave occupation to the people, chief among them being a cotton and woolen miU, and blacksmithing. In those days this latter trade was most popular. Upon the black- smith depended the supply of all the hardware used in the con- struction of buildings, in the making of wag'ons, agricultural im- plements and all other articles made of iron. There were no fac- tories in those days to turn out by machinery these necessary articles as in the present time, consequently we find the black- smith making all the nails, bolts, locks, hinges, plows, shovels, tools, horseshoes, etc., as well as the wagons and sleighs then in use. As the demands of the trade were great and the work profit- able, many of the Rices engaged in it. Later, however, as machinery came into use, the Rices became the tillers of the soil, and many of their descendants became farmers. Among them were Jonas Rice whose farm was handed down to his descendants Joel, Jonah, Calvin and Joel ; also Israel Rice and his son Joseph and grandson Austin ; also Daniel Rice and his son Rodolphus.
The population of Conway in 1776 was 905; in 1790 it rose to 2.082, the largest the town ever had. In 1866 it fell ofif to 1,538, wliile to-day there are not more than a thousand people living there. While beautiful in situation, and possessing many natural advantages, it is ofif the line of the railway and suffers from isola- tion.
In the earlv days of Conway the Rices were very numerous, there are but few remaining to-day. Mr. Franklin Rice, a de- scendant of Benjamin, is living at x^shfield with his family, and carrying the mail between that point and Conway. James B. Rice, Roswell G. Rice, William H. Rice, Mrs. Luna Rice Lee and

Mrs. Jennie Rice Boyden, lineal descendants, are still livinir in Conway. (1908.) Other descendants are livin.a: in Deerfield, Sonth Deerfield, Soutlibridge and other contiguous places. But the vast number are scattered all over the United States from the Atlantic to the Pacific and from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.
The Rev. Charles B. Rice, in his address at the celebration of the hundredth anniversary of the incorporation of Conway, held in that town June 19, 1867, locates for us the sites of the various farms that were occupied by the early Rices. Of the first settler, Cyrus, he says : His house was upou the south side of an old and now unused road that led from the vicinity of John Field's, past the place lately occupied by Bradley Packard, to the present countv road a little distance above the old tavern stand long known as the Hawley place. The first house was about twentv-five rods southeast of the spot now marked by an ancient cellar with bricks and rubbish, on which the family afterwards lived. In this house Beulah Rice was born, the first child Iwrn in Conway. Further on westerly, on the top of the hill, Jonas Rice, of Grafton, located, and where his descendant Joel lived.
Still further on. Deacon Caleb Rice lived, moving after- wards to the top of Arms' Hill, and to Genesee. Beyond the river, in Broomshire, was Israel Rice, from Grafton, and where afterwards x\ustin Rice lived, and northward of him, Timothy Rice also of Gx^afton settled. Israel Rice and William War- ren were the first of these settlers. Mr. Warren with the father of Mr. Rice explored the neighborhood and bought lands in 1762, the year of Cyrus's coming. Two years later Mr. Warren and Israel Rice undertook to visit their estates, but losing the former track up the Deerfield, and striking the sharp banks of the South River at or below the point of Hoosac they could not cross and went back disconcerted. The next year they efifected a landing, crossing near the present bridge, and prepared, Mr. Rice the frame, Mr. Warren the logs, for a house. In 1766 they brought their families. Joseph and Benjamin Rice, twin brothers from Westboro settled in Conway about 1774-75, where they carried on a prosperous business in blacksmithing.
In 1867 there were sixteen farms still occupied by the de- scendants of the first owners and occupants. Among them were the following in the order of their descent: The farm of Jonas Rice, Joel, Calvin, Joel; of Israel Rice, Joseph, Austin; Bertha, wife of Daniel Rice, Rodolphus.

DESCENDANTS OF CYRUS RICE, FIRST SETTLER AT CONWAY.
CYRUS RICE (Josiah; Ephraim; Thomas; Ednuuul), son of Josiah and Sarah Rice, was born in Worcester. ^lass., Decem- ber lo, 1726. His father died at the early age of ^t, years, leaving a widow, a son and two daughters.
On March 27. 1750, Cyrus was married to Elizabeth Eaton, of Worcester. She was the daughter of Ezra and Silence King, alias Rice, of Brimfield, Mass.. now Monsen. born November 16, 1732. and married first a man by the name of Eaton. No record of this marriage or of his death has l)een found.
Cyrus after his marriage with Mrs. Eaton in 1750, removed to Barre. where five of his children were born. There are certain deeds upon record at Springfield showing that his wife Elizabeth inherited from her father Ezra, who died January 14, 1746, a por- tion of the estate, and also showing that Cyrus purchased from Williaiu King twenty-three acres of land in r.rimfield, being Wil- liam's interest in the estate. Elizabeth also had twent\-three acres.
A deed dated October 18. 1756 (Book 2. page 363), and re- corded at Springfield, Mass.. makes Cyrus a resident of Rutland.
It has been claimed that his wife. Elizabeth, died soon after reaching Conway in 1762, and that the daug'hter, Beulah, who was born January 10. 1764. was the child of a second wife.
This claim, however, cannot stand in view of the fact that at S])ringfield there is a deed upon record (Book 7. page 587) dated April 13, 1764, and signed by Cyrus Rice and his wife Elizabeth, of Deerfield, and other heirs of Ezra King, alias Rice, showing that she was living in April, 1764. This settles the dispute about Beulah being the child of a second wife. Another interesting fact is that this child was named after her mother's sister, Beulah.
Elizabeth died however before 1767, and was buried in Deer- field, though no record of the death can be found. It is recorded in Deerfield that Cyrus was married on October 19. 1767, to Eliza- beth Wright, by the Justice of Peace, Thomas W^illiams. The church records at Conwav state that this second wife united with the church there from Harvard, May 16. 1770, and that she died at Conway, February t6. i77(), at the age of 40 years.
Nine months later, on November 29. 1779, Cyrus married Mrs. Ruth Lamb, of Deerfield. widow of Samuel Lamb, with whom he lived but four years, she dying October 3, 1803, at the age of 56 years.
Of his three wives but one has erected to her memory a tomb- stone, the last, which is in the cemetery at Conway alongside that of her husband, Cyrus, who died August 4, 1804, at the age of yy years, loved and respected by all who knew him. Although a farmer by occupation, he devoted a good part of his time to the development and welfare of the town of which he was the first

settler. On June t6, 1767, Conway was set off from Deerfield, to which it had belonged and was long known as "the Southwest," and incorporated as a separate and distinct township. Cyrus was one of the prime movers in this action, and at its first meeting as an incorporated town, held August 24, 1767. he was chosen con- stable of the town, an honorable and important office in those days. Subsequently, during- the year 1776-77. at the outbreak of the Revolution, he served in the General Court of Massachusetts as a representative of his district. He united with the Congrega- tional Church at Conway, April 22, 1770.

In the Massachusetts Soldiers and Sailors of the Revolution. Vol. XIII., Cyrus Rice is thus described: "Belonging to the militia of Con- way, mustered by Lieutenant-Colonel Wells for three months' ser- vice at Claverack ; Captain Densmore's Company ; aged 20 years ; stature, five feet and nine inches, complexion dark, enlisted July 30, 1780, discharged October 10, 1780." His son Harvey speak- ing of him in after years said: "My father was a man of fine phy- sical proportions and of great physical strength. Though not highly educated, he possessed a logical mind, and rarely met his equal in debating a theological question. As the grand object of his life he never sought wealth nor did he acquire it. Yet he man- aged to live in comfortable circumstances and always sustained an irreproachable character. For his memory I entertain a pro- found filial regard and ever recall with gratitude his paternal kindness and solicitude for my welfare."

STEPHEN UICES HOMESTEAD, CONWAY. Built by himself before 1800, and in which Harvey Rice was born.
Stephen bought a farm adjoining that of his father, Cyrus, and hved on it all the days of his life. He married for his first wife, Mrs. Lucy (Baker) Harvey, October 4, 1799, by whom he had three children, two of whom died quite young. A son of Mrs. Lucy l>aker Harvey, Hayden Harvey, after the marriage of his mother to Mr. Rice, took the name of Rice and moved to Troy, N. Y., and died there Noveml)er 17, 1828. She died in Conway, August 2, 1804, aged 33 years. Stephen married (2) Fel)ruary 27. 1814, Mrs. Abigail Freeman Hamilton, of Conway, with whom he lived until her death, August 8, 1836, aged 62 years. He died August 4, 1850, aged 81 years.

He was a highly educated man, and commanded the respect of all who knew him ; practiced law in the city of Troy, where he died, August 8, 1823, aged 41 years. She died, June 30, 1821, aged 33 years.

law; removed to Eagle Village, near Manlius, N. Y., where he practiced law; had several children. No further trace of him or his family.
(33) Vn. HON. HARVEY RICE, son of Stephen and Lucy Baker (Harvey) Rice, was born in Conway, Mass., June 11, 1800. His father, Stephen, was a farmer with whom he lived until he was seventeen years of age, when he left the farm with his father's approval and devoted his earnings from school teaching to preparation for college. He was graduated from Williams Col- lege in 1824, and removed to Cleveland, O., where he opened St. Clair Academy as a classical school. Fie was admitted to the bar in 1826, and practiced law in Cleveland, 1826-28, as a partner with his ])receptor, Reuben Wood. In 1828 he purchased the In- dependent Neii's Letter, changed the name to the Clevehind Plain Dealer, and edited the paper.' He was a Democratic representa- tive from Cuyahoga County in the State Legislature, 1830-31 ; agent at Millersburg for the sale of Western Reserve school lands in the Virginia military district, completing in three years (1833- 2,6) the sale of 50,000 acres, and paying nearly $150,000 to the State treasury, as a school fund for the exclusive benefit of the children of the Western Reserve. He was clerk of the Court of Common Pleas at Cleveland, and of the Supreme Court, 1833-40; the unsuccessful candidate for the twenty-fifth and twenty-sixth

HON. HARVEY RICE, LL.D. (33).
Congresses, 1836-38; State Senator, 1852-54; and introduced the bill for a new system for the public schools of Ohio, and the es- tablishment of school libraries. He was a member of the city council in 1857, serving as chairman of the committee that estab- lished the Cleveland Industrial School, and the same year pro- jecterl the Perrv monument for the public park. In 1862 he was a commissioner to conduct the first draft made in the country. In 1867 he erected at his own expense, a monument at Mission Park, Williamstown, Mass., commemorative of the origination by Samuel J. Mills, in t8o6. of the American Board of Foreign Mis- sions, and on July 22, 1898, the citizens of Cleveland im veiled a bronze statue to the memory of Harvey Rice. LL.D., as the "Father of the Ohio School Systeiu." The honorary degree of LL.D. was conferred on him bv Williams College, in 1871. He was president of the Earlv Settlers" Association of Cuyahoga County at the time of his death, which occurred in Cleveland, O., November 7, 1891.
He married first Fannie Rice, of Sheldon, Vt., at the house of her brother-in-law, George Reuben Wood, September 27, 1828. She was born. February 24, 1808, and died, December 21, 1837, leaving the following children, all born in Cleveland, O. :

(36) VII. HENRY FREEMAN RICE, son of Stephen and Abigail (Hamilton) Rice, was born July 19, 1818; married Jen- nie E. Hume, of Canada, August 31, 1853. He died in California, November 27, 1877. He entered early in life the transportation and express business in Boston, Mass., and soon showed a capac- ity for large affairs. (46) SIDNEY RICE, son of Obed and Sarah (Kinney) Rice, was born in Troy, N. Y.. August 4, 1810: an orphan at 13 years old, he was apprenticed to one of his father's friends that he might learn the hardware business. He was a man that loved books and, like his father, was very devout. He married Julia Redficld Hall, daughter of Timothy Hall, of Troy, N. Y., August 12, 1840. In the spring of 1843 he went west and settled at Cin- cinnati, which he afterwards regarded as his home though he lived in Newport, Ky., on the opposite side of the river, for a number of years. (50) SARAH (RICE) ADAMS, daughter of Obed and Sarah (Kinney) Rice, born January 8, 1821 ; married, in i8j.P', Charles Adams, of New York City, and resided there until i'844, when they removed to Westchester, afterwards called West Farms, N. Y. After the death of Mr. Adams, October 29, 1847, the widow removed to Galesburg, 111., and there married Edward Chambers, bv whom she had one daughter, who grew to woman- hood and married.
Mrs. Sarah Rice Adams Chambers died in Wheaton, 111., at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hazard, May 26, 1877.

(52) PERCIVAL WOOD RICE, son of Harvey and Fannie Rice, born November 27, 1829, in Cleveland, O., where he has continued to live up to the present time. Early in life his father intended giving' him a classical education, and with this end in view sent him to a private school, where under a competent teacher he readily mastered Latin and Greek. A weakness de- veloped in his eyes, and at the age of fifteen he left school and took clerkships in the Post-office and other houses. In 1850 he be- came private secretary to his uncle. Gov. Reuben ^^'ood, in Columbus, O., with rank of colonel on his stafif, and retained the same position under Gov. Wood's successor in office. In 1S53 Mr. Rice entered business in Cleveland, O.. and under the firm name of Rice & Burnett carried on a most successful business as importers and dealers in china, crockery and cut glass. After thirty-five years he retired from business in i88g.
In 1861, when the call came for troops at the opening of the Civil War, the Light Artillery Company of Cleveland, of which organization he had served as captain for years, volunteered its services with Mr. Rice as leader, and was attached to the Ohio 14th under General Steedman in Western A^irginia. They (the Cleveland battery) fired the first gun on the Union side of the war at the battle at Phillips, West A'irginia. His term of service having expired, Mr. Rice returned home, and resumed business, but later he re-entered the service during the Cincinnati raid, serving under General Lew Wallace, located at Newport, Ky. He has been honored on several occasions with marks of dis- tinction from his fellow citizens — member of the Loyal Legions ; member of the Board of Elections for five years ; trustee of the Water Works of Cleveland ; an active member of the building committee for the erection of the Society for Savings, an institu- tion he has served as trustee for twenty years ; was instrumental in engineering the Federal Bill through the Ohio legislature; he is an enthusiastic yachtsman ; he inherited from his father a love for reading and all that is best in art. science and literature ; a man of firmness and steadfastness of purpose, possessing an un- failing sense of honor and high integrity. His refined and cul- tivated tastes and charitable generosity doubtless were imprinted in his nature by the young mother whom he knew so little, but who left the unmistakable traces of the gentle woman. These characteristics, a long and honorable business career, followed by the respect of his fellow townsmen, have won for him that enviable title — a substantial and foremost citizen of Cleveland.

September 2. 1855 ; entered the public school at the age of seven; and at fifteen went to a preparatory school in Williamstown. Mass.. where he spent two years preparing for college ; but his aptitude for mathematics, and dislike of Latin and Greek, turned the tide and sent him to a technical school, the Lehigh University, which he entered in 1872. taking the engineering course, and graduating with honors in July, 1876. He began the practice of his profes- sion at once by opening an office in Cleveland, making bridge building a spccialtw but taking all forms (if construction work.

Many fine bridges in the country bear evidence of his skill and ability in overcoming great obstacles that are not presented on the surface of things, and have called forth high praise from the profession.
His proficiency in his calling has created for him a position of authority among his co-workers, and frequently he is called in consultation when serious and great problems are to be deter- mined, and the best results reached. His probity and freedom from private gain have given him a name that stands for ab- solute honesty and for skill in his profession. He has held the office of city engineer of Cleveland a number of times and is held in high repute both for his professional skill and integrity of character.
On September 2d, 1903, he was married to Margaret Ander- son Barteau, born November 2. 1876.
He is at present living in Cleveland, O.

Upon the death of his father, the son, James Harvey Irvine, inherited the estate. Few Americans of this generation born into an estate of such magnitude as fell to James Harvey Irvine upon the death of his father come into it realizing its duties and responsibilities as he seems to have done, and exercising a rare judgment and modesty in regard to it that is seldom witnessed. The giving of the park in Orange Co. and other pulilic and jirivate benefactions are but a tithe, and he is fulfilling in the largest measure the command of the well-known saying — "Noblesse Oblige." Mrs. Anita Plum Irvine died February — ■ 1909.

(79) HON. CALEB RICE, son of Joseph and Betty (Dicker- son) Rice, born April 4, 1792; married July 16, 1826, Mrs. Mari- etta (Parsons) Stebbins, daughter of Joseph Parsons. She died November 25, 1856. He was educated at Williams College, Wil- liamstown, Mass.; was graduated in 1814; studied law with Wil- liam Blair, Esq., of Westfield. Mass., and was admitted to the bar as an attorney in the county of Hampden, November. 1817; he practised law there for one year, and removed to W^est .Spring- held, where he continued his profession until 1831, when he was appointed sheriff of the county of Hampden, which ot^ce he lield for many years ; he represented the town of West Springfield in the Legislature of Massachusetts for five successive years, com- mencing in 1821 ; he served also as chief commissioner of high-

ways and chairman of the county commissions for the county of Hampden from 1826 to 1831. In 1826 he was appointed hy Gov- ernor Levi Lincohi division inspector of the Fourth Division of Massachusetts Volunteer Mihtia. He also served on the staff of Major-General Knox, of Blanford, Mass.. from whence he re- ceived his title, Colonel. Later, he filled other important posi- tions: Mayor of Spring-field, 1852; president, of Springfield Acqueduct Company, 1864; president of Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1851 ; the latter position he held at the time of his death, March i, 1873, in his 81 st year. Only one child survived him, Elizaheth D. Rice, who went abroad many years ago and married Professor Carol Bianciardi, and died in Vevey, Switzerland, January 2, 1886.

(80) COL. AUSTIN RICE, son of Joseph and Betty (Dicker- son) Rice, born at Conway July 16, 1794; on October 23, 1822, he married Charlotte Baker (born May 21. 1802), a former pupil in one of the schools he taught. On beginning their mar- ried life, they estabHshed family prayers, which were said both morning and evening, a custom they kept up from that day throughout their whole married life. They joined the Congrega- tional Church at Conway by profession of faith September 6, 1829. Austin received his strong religious hnpressions from his grandmother. Lydia Sherman Rice, who was a very godly woman. In those days every able-bodied man was required to train in arms, so Austin was enrolled in the "Floodwood Militia." He subsequently became colonel of a cavalry regiment in the "Old Hampshire" first brigade, receiving his commission from Gov. Levi Lincoln, and would have had a higher rank if he had not declined promotion. His father, Joseph, had been a colonel before him.
Austin had a large farm in Conway and kept sheep for the market, which was well managed and gave him good returns. Both Austin and wife were very fond of books and made free use of the literature of the day.
His popularity among his fellow-men was shown by the con- fidence they placed in him by electing him to serve in a number of public offices — selectman, school commissioner, assessor, county commissioner, member of the State Plouse of Representa- tives, director in the Conway Bank, and member of the Board of Trustees of the Mount Holyoke Seminary at South Had- ley. In politics he was a strong Republican. From the time he came into full possession of his farm until his death he gave

away in charity nearly $5,000. He died on Thursday morning, July 15, t88o, aged 86, and was laid in the old burying place, with his grave in the line of the graves of two generations before him. His wife died August 6, 1889, and was buried by the side of her husband.

(89) ISRAEL RICE, son of Isaac and Anna (Ware) Rice, born September 28, 1801 ; at an early aj^e he removed from Conway to Cazenovia. N. Y., where he married Dorcas Jenkins and where seven children were born to him. He was a farmer, and moved to Fnlton connty, Ohio, in 1856 ; from whence he came to Anrora, 111., in 1868, for the pnrpose of bein^s^ near his sons. In the east was a deacon of a Baptist church, and was an active Church member. He died at his home in South Lake Street, Aurora, III, on Thursday evening, January 21, 1886, aged 84 years and four months. His remains were interred at the Spring Lake Ceme- tery, Aurora. Ilk It is said that after the death of his first wife he married Clarissa Frizelle.

(207) REV. CHARLES BAKER RICE, son of Col. Austin and Charlotte (Baker) Rice, born June 29, 1829. His early home was upon his father's farm, Broomshire, Conway. He received his early education in the Broomshire district school, and later attended the Select Schools in "Pumpkin Hollow," and afterward took a course at the Williston Seminary, East Hampton. He sub- sequently began teaching in Conway, Natick and East Hampton. As a young man he took a deep interest in politics. In the ¥ve- mont campaign in 1856 he made addresses in Maine and Pennsyl- vania. He iiad been a member of the Congregational Church from early boyhood, and about this time his mind turned toward the ministry. Entering the Bangor Tlieological Seminary in 1856 he was graduated in 1859. He was pastor of the First Church in Saco, Me., from December, 1859, to December, 1861 ; of the

First Church hi Danvers, Mass., from September, 1863, to Sep- tember, 1894. Just before the close of his pastorate he had been elected secretary of the Congreo-ational Board of Pastoral Sup- ply, an agency then newly estabhshed In the General Association of the Congregational Churches of Massachusetts, and he still holds that office.
He received the degree of Master of Arts from Bowdoin Col- lege in 1864, and several years later that of Doctor in Divinity from Colorado College. He was a member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives in 1876 and in 1877, and of the Massa- chusetts Senate in 1881, and was for six years a member of the Massachusetts Board of Education. He g'ave an historical ad- dress at the celebration of the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Incorporation of the Town of Conway ; .preached the sermon at the dedication of the Congregational meeting house. December 16, 1885 ; gave the dedicatory address at the opening of the Field Memorial Library in 1901. and has written a numl)er of valuable articles that have been published in the secular and religious newspapers.
On June 7, 186 r, he married Claire Austin Lord, of Portland (born June 7, 1838) ; she died January 9, 1885, leaving three chil- dren. On September 24, 1895, he was married to Henrietta Hyde Stanwood, of Boston. Their home is still in Danvers, Mass.

(262) HENRY J. RICE, son of Joseph W. T. and Anna Electa (Allis) Rice, born in Cazenovia, N. Y., March 5, 1849; educated at Cazenovia Seminary ; was _s^raduated from Cornell Universit}-, and, obtaining a fellowship from a prize thesis, spent two years of study at Johns Hopkins L^niversity ; later went to Paris and studied there. On his return to America he made the acquaint- ance of Prof. Baird, of the Smithsonian Institute, and made fish culture a specialty ; subsequently went to New York, where he was employed by the State Fish Commissioners, and his investi- gations of oyster culture proved most valuable. He was the author of several scientific works, one of which, on "Amphioxus," was translated into F^rench and published in France as a part of a report of a scientific association. He died unmarried at his home, 407 Clermont Avenue, Brooklyn, N. Y., December 14, 1885. His was a life of unsw^erving devotion to duty and singleness of pur- pose. .He rose to be an authority upon the subject to which he had devoted the latter part of his life.
