THE DESCENDANTS OF

ISAAC DENISON

RESIDENT OF BURKE,

CALEDONIA COUNTY, VERMONT

Compiled by his Daughter

ROSALIA DENISON BOWMAN

ST. JOHNSBURY, VERMONT 1904

THE DESCENDANTS OF

ISAAC DENISON

Isaac Denison was born in Stonington, Conn., April 23, 1778. He was a descendant of Capt. George Denison, who came from England in IG^jS and settled in Stonington.

Isaac Denison, when about fifteen years old, came to Ludlow, Vt., with his father, Elisha Denison. He attended the district school (which was his only chance for an education) and mastered the English branches sufficiently to become a successful teacher. On October 21, 1798, he married Electra Newell, who was bom in Farmington, Conn., September 10, 1780, in Tinsworth, Vt. She was the daughter of Daniel and Nancy Curtis Newell.

In the spring of 1799 they moved into the town of Burke, Caledonia County, Vt., and settled on a hill in the western part of the town, where they com- menced a pioneer life, full of hardships and priva- tions. There were no good roads, most of the travel being on horseback. Religious services were held four miles distant, and they were as constant as pos- sible in their attendance. Eleven children were born to them, five boys and five girls reaching adult age and marrying from the old home.

In 1852 Mr. Denison moved to Norway, Me., to be near his three sons, who were in business in that place. He died January 9, 1867, in Norway, his wife surviving him only three years. She died in Burke, with her youngest daughter, Mrs. Harley M. Hall, August 22, 1870.

Isaac Denison was an honest, upright, reliable man, hospitable and generous, as many a fatherless boy could testify. He served the town in many ways as selectman, town clerk, overseer of the poor but it is, after all, as a kind father, a generous friend and an upright citizen that he is best held in remembrance. He and his wife were charter members of the first Baptist church organized in Burke. They are bur- ied in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Paris, Me.

Soon after her marriage November 13, 1827 to T. O. Brown, they removed to his home, Randolph Hill, where they kept a hotel for several years. A very sad accident occurred while they were living here.

Being a little short of sleeping rooms, they had a swing bed in the sitting room which ]\Ir. and Mrs. Brown occupied. One morning, having a number of teamsters to get breakfast for, they arose very earl}', ]\Irs. Brown going to the kitchen to assist the girl about breakfast, leaving her three months' old baby

5

sleeping in the bed. Soon the girl went into the sit- ting room to tidy it up, and not thinking of the little one, swung the bed in place. Mrs. Brown coming into the room soon after, saw the bed in position, ex- claimed, "Oh, my baby !" and fell fainting to the floor. Mr. Brown came at once to the rescue, but the little life had gone out and the mother's heart was nearly broken by the sudden bereavement.

From Randolph they removed to Grey, N. H., from there to Norway, Me., where he spent the re- mainder of his life. Nancy, his wife, died Septem- ber 6, 1861. He died April 2, 1878. They are buried in Pine Grove Cemetery, South Paris, Me.

8, 1818, on the farm where his father settled on com- ing from Connecticut in 1804. In 1842 he and his brother, Harris, entered into a copartnership, taking the old home farm, paying off accumulated debts and caring for their father and mother. They were in- dustrious farmers, making a specialty of fine horses, Devon cattle and Cotswold sheep. Harris died May

9, 1865. This was a great blow to Harley, as they were very devoted to each other. Harley repre- sented the town in 1858-9, and was Senator from the county in 1868-9. In the fall of 1874 he had a se- vere sickness, from which he never fully recovered. He died October 6, 1878, of strangulated hernia, after a brief illness of only four days. His funeral was attended at his home, where people from all parts of the county assembled to pay their last tribute to one whom they honored and respected.

His education was acquired at the dis- trict school and Peacham Academy, where he went M'ith DcSelim Newell, an uncle of about his age and a life-long friend. Soon after coming of age he bought a farm of one hundred acres near his father, on which he built a good house and barn. On November 24, 1827, he married Catherine Bemis, who was born in Lyndon, Vt., October 24, 1805, a very estimable woman. They at once commenced housekeeping in their new home. The winter after his marriage a neighbor who was clearing some land told him he might have all the wood he would cut and draw. He gladly availed himself of the offer. One day about 2.30 P. M. a man passing his home as he was driving into his yard with an oxload of wood told him that a fox had just crossed above his house. He at once took his dog and gun and started in pursuit. A lit- tle before dark he returned with two foxes. His good wife in the meantime had unyoked the oxen and put them in the barn. In 1831 he moved to Burke Hol- low and went into trade with Daniel Beckwith. A few years later he and Alonzo Bemis bought of Joel Trull, senior, his house and store and began keeping a hotel in conection with the store, under the firm

14

The following obituary appeared in a Portland paper :

E. B. DENISON

A few words relative to E. B. Denison cannot be out of place. Mr. Denison was a citizen whom Port- land can ill afford to lose. An upright, quiet and mod- est man, he filled a position of usefulness in the com-

18

munity far more important than that of many who make themselves more conspicuous pubhcly. His in- tegrity and sound business abihty won for him the respect of all who came in contact with him. There is no position among men where a man can accomplish more for other men than that of the head of a large industrial business. The captain of industry in a future not far distant is to stand in the first rank of the world's benefactors. A well-known financial man said of Mr. Denison : "I have never known but one or two men who after failing in business and settling with creditors at a percentage, afterwards when suc- cessful paid in full with interest, but this is what Mr. Denison did." The remarks of citizens when his deatli was announced show the esteem in which he was held by all. Said a large manufacturer, "He was one of the best men I ever knew." Said another, "He was a first-class man in every respect," and an- other, "He was a man of most lovely character." To win universal approval is better for a man than the possession of titles.

NATHAN DENISON

Nathan Denison, second son of Isaac and Electra Denison, married Sila Stoddard, April 12, 1830. She was born in Sutton, Vt., January 5, 1807. He settled on a farm south of his father's, where he lived eleven years. In September, 1835, he was baptized by Rev. Jonathan Woodman and united with the Baptist Church at East Burke, Vt. Soon after this

19

he felt called to preach the gospel and thinking his education not equal to such a calling, he disposed of his farm and with his little family removed to the town of Derby and entered the Derby Seminary, then in its infancy (1841).
