It has been prepared to assist school systems, their schools, teachers and library staff in the planning, preparation and conduct of programs in environmental education for Grades One to Twelve. The Catalogue of Resources is presented as a companion document to the Environmental Education Manual For Grades I to XII. It consists of a limited inventory prepared by teams of practising teachers. Like most catalogues, this document will quickly become outdated. New books will be published, new films will be produced and new locations for teaching will be developed or discovered. This inventory, therefore, is not presented as a complete or exhaustive list but, rather, as a departure point to be utilized in any practical way. Interested individuals or groups are encouraged to build and maintain their own lists geared more specifically to their particular needs. Users of the catalogue should be aware that these annotated items have not been subjected to analysis nor to examination by committee. They are, however, the result of experienced use by educators. The grade application range is suggested only. Resources have been presented in three general categories: - Print Materials (books, pamphlets, magazines, etc.) - Non-Print Materials (films, filmstrips, slides, videotapes, records, etc. ) - Physical Resources (places to visit, educational sites, etc.). The format was devised to provide as much consistency as possible. In every case, a resource is identified by title, categorized, related to subject, annotated, and information is provided as to location or source. Each section is presented in alphabetical order. Print Resources Print resources may be found in a variety of general formats. In the interest of convenience, this category has been subdivided into two sections: - Books, Booklets and Card Sets - Magazines, Reports and Pamphlets. Note: As an additional service, the section on books has been cross-referenced according to a list of authors. Non-print Resources Non-print resources appear in two modes - the video and the audio. This division, plus variety of format, results in division into subsections. These include: - Filmstrips and Slide Sets (often accompanied by audio-cassettes or scripts) - Films, Videotapes or Videocassettes and Video-Discs or Laser Discs - Records and Audio-Cassettes - Maps, Photosets and Games. Note: On occasion, a number of different types of resources are assembled together in order to form a multi-media resource. This package has been classified as a Kit. Physical Resources It has been suggested that education about the environment may simply take place in the conventional school environment of the classroom, library or laboratory. Education of the environment, on the other hand, should take place in that environment. This implies educational excursions to any number of sites which allow students to learn and practise skills in the "real" world. The magnitude of such a resource classification based, as it must be, on geographic locations within the province presents something of a problem. In order to simplify the treatment of such a mass of information the province has been arbitrarily divided into five areas or zones. These are labelled as: - Northern Region - Edmonton and Region - Central Region - Calgary and Region - Southern Region. They are identified on the accompanying map. SPECIAL NOTE This catalogue is not designed to replace any other catalogue or document. While we have not studiously avoided listings which may appear in other similar publications, the unique interdisciplinary nature of environmental education usually results in materials considered too general for the needs of those involved in areas of greater specificity. Users are reminded that there are numerous useful and valuable resources listed in Curriculum Guides (Recommended and Supplementary) and in Catalogues issued by such agencies as ACCESS, Alberta Consumer and Corporate Affairs, Alberta Energy and Natural Resources and Alberta Environment.
