ANNOUNCEMENT.

The Ninth Annual session of the Fort Wayne College of Medi- cine will begin on Tuesday, Sept. 29th, 1887, and will close March 13th, 18S8, there being an interval of about ten days during the holidays. It is now the only Medical School in Northern Indiana.

Past experience has demonstrated the fact that Fort Wayne has every facility for successful medical instruction. The city has a population of 40,000 and is the centre for five railroads, of which the Professors of Surgery are the official surgeons of two, and the patients of the Pennsylvania and Wabash systems of rail- roads are cared for at the City and St. Joseph Hospitals. All the clinical material of the free wards of both hospitals are at the disposal of the Professors of Clinical Medicine and Surgery. This is necessarily abundant in a city the size of Fort Wayne and besides this each clinical instructor brings as many of his private cases before the class as are of interest in the demonstration of lectures.

THE CHEMICAL LABORATORY.

This department will be managed so as to afford a complete practical knowledge of both Medical Chemistry and Microscopical Urinalysis.

ST. JOSEPH HOSPITAL.

This most excellent institution is situated at the corner of Broad- way and Main streets. It has a large, commodious Iqcture-room, and is under complete supervision. It is supported by a large territory of country and its usefulness is appreciated by the people.

THE CITY HOSPITAL.

This beautiful institution is situated at the corner of Washing- ton and Barr streets, two squares from the center of the city. It is very accessible for ambulance cases, and is often the scene of capital operations by the surgical staff. Clinics will be held regu- larly at both the City and St. Joseph Hospitals.

CLINICS.

The surgical and medical clinics are not surpassed for variety and usefulness by any institution in the west. With abundant material for the illustration of every department of medicine and surgery, is combined the close observation and personal inspection of each and every case. Each student is made to feel a personal interest and responsibility in every case and can follow the pro- gress of each case from day today and note the immediate effects of treatment. Auscultation and percussion are taught by the Pro- fessors of Theory and Practice both didactically and clinically, thus affording facilities which are offered at other schools by special, private and expensive courses only. A special course of practical instruction in obstetrics will be afforded the members of the graduating class and each member will have an opportunity to attend at least one case of confinement during the session.

OPHTHALMOLOGY AND OTOLOGY.

Instructions in the use of Ophthalmoscope and Otoscope will be given, free of charge, to every member of the class, who will pro- vide himself with the necessary instruments.

PORT WAYNE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

COURSE OF STUDY.

The demand of the profession and of the public is for the eleva- tion of the standard of medical education. The Fort Wayne Col- lege of Medicine, recognizing the justice of this demand, has in- stituted a graded course, which however, for the present, is option- al with the student.

This course of study requires attendance during three regular terms.

The first year comprises the study of Anatomy (with dissections) Chemistry, Practical Chemistry and Physiology.

The second year comprises vSurgical Anatomy, Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Pathology, Histology and the use of the Micro- scope, Clinical Medicine and Surgery at the Hospital, and Physi- cal Diagnosis.

The third year comprises Practice of Medicine and Surgery, Ob- stetrics, Gynaecology, Diseases of Children, Materia Medica and Therapeutics, Medical and Surgical Clinics at the Hospital, and the Application of Surgical Appliances and Bandages.

The faculty strongly recommends this course for the adoption of students, yet for the present they are free to choose whether they will follow this or the usual course.

FEMALE STUDENTS ADMITTED.

Jgsgr-The Faculty desires to call special attention to the fact that female students are admitted to study in this school upon the same basis and with the same priveleges in every respect as male stud- ents; and each class hitherto has included ladies whose standing has been equal to that of any of the gentlemen.

PORT WAYNE COLLEGE OF MEDICINE.

REQUISITES FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF MEDICINE.

1. The candidate must be twenty-one years of age, and of a good moral character.

2. ]\Iust file a satisfactory certificate of having studied medi- cine for at least three years under a regular graduate or licentiate and practitioner of medicine, in good standing. No candidate shall be eligible for final examination for graduation unless his or her term of three years' study shall have been completed, or shall expire at a date not later than three months after the close of the final examinations.

3. ]\Iust file satisfactory evidence that, during the above men- tioned three years, he or she has matriculated at some regular col- lege or colleges for two regular sessions, and in the course of the same has attended two full courses of instruction, the latter of which must have been in this institution. No two consecutive courses of instruction shall be held as satisfying the above re- quirements, unless the time between the beginning of the first course and the end of the second course is greater than fifteen months.

4. Must have dissected at least one session, and have likewise received practical instruction in Chemistry, in this or some other medical school, and must also have attended hospital instructions, both of which must be shown by sufficient evidence.

5. The candidate must have passed personal examinations by the Faculty in all the branches of medicine taught in this college. Each candidate for graduation will be examined by the different teachers at the end of every month, and the average of the month- ly examinations will influence his final standing.

6. Each candidate must have paid in full all College dues, in- cluding the graduation fee.

The degree will not be conferred upon any candidate who absents himself from the Public Commencement without per- mission.

Premature examinations will be granted under certain circum- stances, but the candidate must give good and sufficient reasons for requesting the same.

Persons desiring to take instructions in practical anatomy and chemistry are permitted to do so without the payment of the ma- triculation fee.

1. All fees shall be paid to the Secretary of the Faculty, and upon presentation of the Secretary's General Ticket to the mem- bers of the Faculty, the holder shall be entitled to the tickets paid for.

2. No ticket or other certificate of attendance upon the college exercises shall be issued to any student until the dues for the same shall have been fully paid, nor until the end of the term .

3. The established fees for the exercises of the regular session, except the matriculation fee, graduation fee, fee for dissection and hospital ticket, will be reduced one-half to graduates of other reg- ular colleges of less than three years' standing, and to under- graduates of the same who have attended two full courses of in- struction in the regular session.

4. The same fees will be remitted altogether to alumni of this College to graduates of other regular medical colleges of three years' standing, the three years dating from the time of graduation and ending at the close of the session for which tickets are given; to under-graduates who have already attended two full courses of instruction of the regular sessions, the latter of which, at least, must have been in this College, and to theological students when not candidates for diplomas.

5. The same fees may be reduced or remitted to deserving in- digent students, to a number not exceeding five per cent, of the matriculates at the previous regular session of the college.

At the end of the term, certificates of attendance are issued to non-graduates, in which the exact amount of attendance during the term is certified to by the Dean and the Secretary, over the seal of the College.

FORT WAYNE COLLEGE OP MEDICINE.

PRELIMINARY REQUIREMENTS.

Each student before matriculation must present satisfactory evi- dence, on examination or otherwise, of proficiency in the funda- mental branches of an Knglish education. Graduation from a college, academy or high school, or a license to teach in the pub- lic schools, will be evidence of such proficiency.

THE NEW COLLEGE BUILDING.

The college has removed to the large three-story brick block, on the west side of Barr Street, between Berry and Main streets, two squares from the Court House. This building furnishes twice as much space as the one formerly occupied by the college. It has been fitted up in a superior manner and is spacious and con- venient in every respect.

BOARDING AND LODGING.

There are many excellent boarding houses in the immediate vicinity of the college. On reaching the city students should go at once to the office of the Secretary, at No. 94 Calhoun St., over Thieme & Gross' drug store, where they will be furnished with di- rections for boarding houses. The rate per week varies, of course, with the accommodations, and can be found at from three and one- half dollars upward. In many instances heretofore, students have gone even below this figure.

Students should arrange to get here very early in the session, as the accumulation of clinical material during summer, renders the first few weeks of the session especially rich in clinical instruction.
