All the year we travel

A thousand different trails;

Down a blue highway

Where a tall ship sails --

Down a scene-swept country lane-

Down a crowded street- -

Oh, the magic and the beauty

Where the crossroads meet!

Catherine Parmenter

It has been our effort to depict the trails which we as students have followed through Palm Beach Junior College this past year.

At times our trail has been narrow and devious, and the ascent has been difficult. At other times, it has widened into a joyous and leisurely experience. There have been guides and signposts which most of us have obeyed; there have been pleasant friendships formed; there have been moments of relaxation and fun--all along the trail.

It is the hope of the Editorial Staff that this book will bring back t o each of you thoughts o f these memorable trails which we have traveled together.

On the sunny days of September 8 and 9, the Class of '55 began their adventure down the paths leading to Palm Beach Junior College. From north, south, east, and west they gathered to follow one trail leading to higher education. After a week of orientation, they began to act and feel like real college students.

To guide them through their first year, the members of the class chose the follow- ing officers: Monte Markham, president; Wayne Snyder, vice-president; Kathy Newlon, secretary; and Russell Kartrude, treasurer.

In the months that followed, the Class of '55 has made a real contribution to the student life and activities of the College.

The Student Government officers synchronize the activities of the school by maintaining a social calendar for the year. They have boosted the social thermometer this year by promoting interest in the various activities sponsored by the social clubs, and by sponsoring the Get-Acquainted Pool Party, the Activity Day Picnics, the annual Christmas Alumni Dance, and the Commencement Dance.

The StudentGovernment Executive Council, consisting of the Student Government Officers, Class Officers, Dean of Women, Dean of Men, and Registrar of the College, is the sounding board of student opinion and a blending of faculty and student ideas. The more serious and time-consuming functions of this Council include acting upon problems involving the student body, running the polls for student government and class elections, and devising a budget for the spending of student activity fees.

MrXotiis Z.M. Southwick

The close of this year brings an end to the college trail for one of our faculty members who is retiring after many years of service In the Palm Beach County School System. Since 1946 Mr. Southwick has been identified with Palm Beach Junior Col- lege, and during that time he has guided many students toward success and honor in various fields of engineering.

The members of the Galleon Editorial Staff take this opportunity, Mr. Southwick, to recognize your service and to wish for you many full, rich, and happy years ahead. We hope that retirement from your profession will enable you to carry out many plans and desires which during your busy years could be but dreams.

CommmcemeHt

The end of the TRAIL opens new TRAILS to the future.

We see into the distance. The vague and shadowy shapes. The signposts of tomorrow, Covered with tomorrow's capes.

Wayfarer, what will you find, As the markers are unveiled; Will the trail bring achievement. Or a life to be unbailed!

—Terry Garrity
