Dedicated to Kenny Davis RIP ====================================================================================== new tour story Mike had missed the opening of this fall tour and knew he wanted to be in Rochester so we drove the VW van straight through from Texas and arrived in town in time to get a good spot in a lot near the War Memorial. This was Mike's first time to the famed venue which the band played at many times over the years and these two shows would prove to be the last. [Ed note: Deadbase says ten shows played; 1973-03-30 through 1985-11-08] The place was brimming from wall to wall, I had never experienced the floor being so tight at this venue, they must have stuffed as many people in as the ushers could take cash from. We had been discussing not going to the OTS and trying to run from upfront like we did before the invention of the OTS. We knew we didn't want to be behind the soundboard in the OTS so we piled all the gear into a backpack without a mic stand and in we went. We wound up on Phil's side about five feet left of center and 80 feet from the stage. Hand holding the C422 is a serious task; we traded off holding it about every 30 minutes. The first set we kept the mic about chest/shoulder height to avoid detection; IMO this makes this set much less listenable than the second set mainly due to the vocals being low and the bass being powerful. The second set we had it about face level and it has some sonic moments one rarely hears in audience recordings. The sonic clarity separating certain instruments such as both drum kits or the Hammond and Weir's rhythm guitar is noticeable with this recording. The bass in "CC Rider" and BIODTL is quite realistic, more than other FOB tapes we made this year. Even Jerry's vocal in Loser has some chilling reality and vocal nuance. set 1- woman's voice during tune-up = "Jerry's so fat"! (or was it phat?) The "CC Rider" is excellent with Brent supplying some great Hammond B3. The cowboy tunes are all well performed by both Bobby and Jerry. The somewhat rare BIODTL gave way to a short "Deal" ending the set after slightly less than one hour. They picked it up a bit for set 2. The "Gimme Some Lovin'" out of space had so much energy and the crowd roaring, then, in an abrupt change Jerry throws down a slow, but tight "Stella Blue". "High Time" was a stunner, the vocals and solemnity f the presentation, this was one solid version. The emergence of a second set "Let it Grow" had the crowd calling out with excitement. Bobby sang like hell to close out the show with the "Throwing Stones" > "Not Fade Away". length expanded size cdr WAVE problems fmt ratio filename 4:53.227 84449324 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7087 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t01.flac 5:45.587 99529004 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7548 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t02.flac 3:27.853 59861804 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7502 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t03.flac 1:12.720 20943404 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.6920 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t04.flac 7:14.853 125237804 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7457 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t05.flac 7:22.093 127322924 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7436 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t06.flac 2:32.453 43906604 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7648 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t07.flac 5:03.200 87321644 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7627 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t08.flac 4:43.573 81669164 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7698 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t09.flac 2:56.907 50949164 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7815 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t10.flac 7:16.113 125600486 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7699 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s1t11.flac 6:10.067 106579244 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7406 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t01.flac 6:58.293 120468524 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7598 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t02.flac 8:43.440 150750764 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7263 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t03.flac 12:47.707 221099564 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7570 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t04.flac 9:30.880 164413484 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7079 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t05.flac 5:07.907 88677164 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7018 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t06.flac 5:03.160 87310124 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7516 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t07.flac 7:12.133 124454444 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7198 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t08.flac 9:18.773 160926764 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7440 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t09.flac 6:07.360 105799724 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7472 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t10.flac 2:31.680 43683884 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7197 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t11.flac 5:13.959 90420176 B cxx -- ---xx flac 0.7471 gd1985-11-07akgc422davis-holbrook-s2t12.flac 137:13.938 2371375186 B 0.7426 (23 files)
