Armstrong State College

Savannah, Georgia

As a part of the community Arm- strong State College endeavors to make a significant contribution to society. Our major contribution is that of edu- cated, searching minds that will some- day assume roles of leadership here and abroad. With the continued interest and support of the citizens of Savan- nah, Armstrong will remain an influen- tial force for growth and progress.

Learning is not confined to the for- mality of the classroom situation. The work that begins in the classroom con- tinues on all parts of the campus. Some students even study at home, so we are led to believe. The library, student cen- ter, and benches in the mall provide valuable opportunities to compare notes with classmates-

There is much more to college than meets the unsophisticated eye of the pre-college person. Academics is the aspect of college life most famil- iar to most people, but does not constitute the total college experi- ence. There is much to be learned and enjoyed that comes from sourc- es other than books, but which com- plements the academic curriculum appreciably.

Whether it be in varsity athletics, drama, or the pep-band, a talent used is a talent improved.

Learning does not end with the day. The evening program is expanding and affords an excellent opportunity to those who wish to continue their formal edu- cation at night while meeting the other necessary demands made on their time.

The evening can even be put to good advantage by the day student. A quiet, study-filled evening in the library can do wonders for the grade point average and the sagging intellect.

Henry L. Ashmore

Armstrong State College is rapidly growing and ever expanding its program under the very capable leadership of our President, Dr. Henry L. Ashmore. The responsibility for securing and maintaining new buildings and programs lies with Dr. Ashmore. It is possible for a college to exist without extensive effort on the part of the President; however, if an institution is to grow and take its place among the respected institutions of higher education, it must have effective and dynamic leadership. Armstrong is fortunate, indeed, to have this leadership in the person of Dr. Henry L. Ashmore.

Joseph I. Killorin

Dean of The College

As Dean of Academic Affairs Dean Joseph I, Killorin has many responsibilities. He is responsible for all academic as- pects of life at Armstrong State College. To Dean Killorin falls the responsibility of guiding the establishment of the curriculum for the various degrees offered at Armstrong.

Working with the department heads, Dean Killorin main- tains and supervises the college faculty. He is responsible for the scheduling of classes, including additions to and deletions from the schedule. Dean Killorin also works very closely with the faculty in solving day-to-day problems as well as in making decisions of lasting importance.

22

James T. Rogers

Dean of Student Affairs

The Dean of Student Affairs at Armstrong, Dr. James T. Rogers, coordinates all non-academic activities involving stu- dents. His numerous duties include supervision of student activities, registration, counseling and the student financial aid program.

Dr. Rogers is responsible for coordinating the orientation program for entering students. He serves as the Chairman of the Admissions Committee and is a member of all student affairs committees.

As Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Rogers serves as the main link between the Administration and the student body. A great part of the responsibility for campus communications lies with Dr. Rogers.

Donald D. Anderson

ASSOCIATE DEAN FOR COMMUNITY SERVICES

Dr. Donald D. Anderson has efficiently taken over the role of Associate Dean for Community Services. Working together with Mrs. Mary Strong, Dr. Anderson strives to make aware to the public Armstrong State College's programs and needs. He continually aids in the growth of Armstrong as a four- year institution by developing and coordinat- ing such programs as "Operation Return," which is aimed at assisting people interested in returning to college after having been out for a number of years.

At present, Dr. Anderson plays a dual role. In addition to his duties as Associate Dean for Community Services, Dr. Anderson is also serving as Head of the Department of Edu- cation. With Mrs. Mary Dan Coleman, Dr. Anderson strives to prepare students for a career in the teaching profession. Teaching in the Education Department, counseling edu- cation majors, and working with the Com- munity Services and the public make Dr. An- derson an integral part of the administration and faculty of Armstrong State College.

JULE C. ROSSITER

Serving as the Assistant to the Associate Dean for Community Services, Mrs. Mary Strong strives to make the public aware of Armstrong State College and the various programs it has to offer. Mrs. Strong co-ordinates the non-credit courses available to the public and the University of Georgia extension courses for college students. Working with Dr. An- derson, she helps to keep the Armstrong State Col- lege Alumni informed of Armstrong activities.

As comptroller at Armstrong State College, Miss Jule C. Rossiter handles all business affairs of the college. She is responsible for maintaining all fiscal records, preparing financial reports, and receiving all funds paid to the college. Also included in her many financial duties is her assistance to President Ashmore in the preparation of the yearly budget. At present, Miss Rossiter is working closely with the architect on the plans for construction of the new facilities to be erected on the Armstrong Campus.

DALE L. PRICE

Director of Student Activities

The Office of Student Affairs, under the direction of Dr. James T. Rogers, is re- sponsible for all aspects of the co-curricular life of students. This includes orientation, registration, student activities, financial assist- ance, student records, counseling and stu- dent health and welfare.

Mrs. Martha C. DeWitt heads the Com- mittee on Financial Aid which seeks to assist students who demonstrate scholastic ability but are unable to attend college without fi- nancial assistance.

Mr. Dale L. Price, Director of Student Activities, is responsible for the effective co- ordination of all student activities and or- ganizations on campus.

Because student welfare is one of the

major concerns of the Student Affairs Office, qualified counselors are available to assist, at the students' request.

To the Registrar, Mr. Jack Padgett, and the office of Registration and Admission is entrusted the task of admitting and regis- tering students and maintaining all student records.

The health services program is supervised by our Campus Nurse, Mrs. Ann Nease. The infirmary is temporarily located in the gymnasium and is open from nine in the morning to three in the afternoon. MARY DAN COLEMAN Assistant Professor of Education

Perhaps one of the most necessary areas of study in college is that of education. Without this department, the teaching pro- fession would not exist as it does today. Directed by Dr. Donald D. Anderson, the Education Department prepares students for the task of instructing others, whether at the elementary or secondary level.

Education majors first learn the fundamental aspects of edu- cation, then the more intricate aspects. Upon completion of the required course work and practice teaching they are graduated and assume their role in the community of education.

DONALD D. ANDERSON, Ed.D. Head, Department of Education

33

Fine Arts

The musically or artistically-inclined student can find enchantment and fascination through art and music courses at Armstrong. For the enjoy- ment and benefit of the musically-inclined stu- dent, Dr. Harry Persse offers a wide variety of music courses. General courses for all students are followed by concentrated individual courses for music majors.

Artistically-inclined students, directed by Mr. Kenneth McKinnell, learn to express themselves through their art work. The art program is new at Armstrong, but has already proven to be one of the most popular.

Psychology and Sociology

Assisting students in the study of the intricacies of the human mind and personality is the Department of Psychology and Sociology, under the chairmanship of Dr. Robert Cormack.

Because of the vast complexity of the human per- sonality and the society in which we live, the related fields of psychology and sociology assume great res- ponsibility as they take the leading role in our attempt to establish a more livable and productive world com- munity.

Plans are now being made to initiate a psychology major at Armstrong.

History

Through the able leadership of Dr. Roy Carroll, the members of the History Department devote their ener- gies to helping students study the significance of events of the past and present, and the possible consequences of these events. Armstrong students not only learn- American history and world history in general, but also learn, in detail, of the history of other great nations of the world.

In political science, students study government on the three basic levels: local, state, and national.

Miss 'Gee 1967

The Miss Geechee Pageant is one of the highlights of the year for Arm- strong State College students. Each year Armstrong coeds vie for the Miss Gee- chee title. Miss Geechee for 1967 is Miss Marilyn Hood, a freshman nursing student and member of the Delta Chi Sorority. Marilyn enjoys swimming, ski- ing, dancing, and playing the piano.

Members of the Miss Geechee Court are Miss Susan Stevens, Miss Linda San- chez, Miss Ginger Price, and Miss Karen Donbeck.

Registration and Orientation

Lines of students wait to register outside gymnasium.

The endless lines seemed longer this year as students patiently a- waited their turns to register for the fall quarter. There was the nor- mal worrying about schedules and classes, but excitement prevailed as students were preparing for the new term.

The new method of computer reg- istration was employed during win- ter and spring quarters. Schedules were arranged by computers with students only writing in the course they wished to take. This was a completely new system for Arm- strong that has been very successful.

The purpose of the Orientation program was to give new students an idea of what they could expect in college. Students and faculty mem- bers worked together to achieve this purpose.

Rat Week Initiated At Armstrong

For the first time in the history of Armstrong, a Rat Program for all Freshmen was begun in the fall. Pat King, Secretary of Student Affairs, was in charge. At freshman orienta- tion he told the new students of their duties during the coming week. All freshmen were to wear maroon col- ored beanies and obey upperdassmen. The "Rats" were auctioned daily at the lunch period in the student cen- ter. Those who were sold had to be a "slave" the following day to their "master." At the Rat Dance which climaxed the week, Carol Jordan was selected as Rat Queen with Ellen Mathews and Ginger Price as attend- ants.

Pat King fits rat cap on new freshman.

Tom Kelly congratulates Rat Queen Carol Jordan, center, and attendants, Ellen Mathews and Ginger Price.

Lyceum Committee Brings

Another new program insti- tuted this year was the Lyceum Series which offered cultural opportunities to the Armstrong students and the public. Three interesting programs were pre- sented each quarter lasting about two hours each. Guest speakers on politics, literature, and his- tory, as well as musicians and singers, appeared on campus at these convocations.

With sincerity and humor, Tom Paxton sang about man, God, so- ciety and their interrelationships.

Mr. Henderson lectured on Falstaff and the "Texas Aggies".

Marilyn Hood

Each year the students of Arm- strong nominate a young lady pos- sessing the attributes of beauty, poise and intelligence as Miss Gee- chee. The title has come to repre- sent the spirit and purpose of the college. Every campus organization sponsors a contestant in the beauty review which is held in Jenkins Hall. This year the five judges were: Mrs. Gerald Chan Sieg, Mrs. Jackie Cason, Mr. Max Herrin, Mr. Don McElveen, and Mr. Archie Whit- field. Casual, dress, and formal were the three divisions for competition. After participating in the three events, five finalists were selected by the judges. Each girl then had to answer a question. Based on these questions and previous interviews the judges chose Marilyn Hood as the 1967 Miss Geechee; Susan Ste- vens, first runner-up; Linda San- chez, second runner-up; Ginger Price, third runner-up; and Karen Donbeck, fourth runner-up. Aman- da McLaughlin, Miss Geechee 1966 crowned her new successor. A dance followed the ceremony with music by the Sons of Bach.

Homecoming 1967

The Homecoming activities began with a basketball game between Augusta College and Armstrong. During the half-time, Martha Haynes was named the Homecoming Queen of 1967. The members of her court were Diane Shearouse and Mary Ann Werntz.

The following night, a supper and student-faculty basketball game occurred. The students won by a narrow margin. The half-time enter- tainment was provided by Dr. Stratton and Dr. Laffer. Student per- formers included Pat, Drew, John, and Ellen. The third night a dance was held in the Student Center with music furnished by "The Coach-

Lettermen

The highlight of the social activities was a concert by the famous Letter- men, a collegiate singing group. Tickets were sold to the public adding to the large crowd who came to hear the melo- dious sounds of the three men. Such songs as "Softly," "Smile," and "Love Is a Many Splendored Thing," enchanted the listeners during the Lettermen's out- standing performance.

Famous Band Appears on Campus

During the winter quarter, members of Arm- strong State College were fortunate to hear the Continental Air Command Band, a professional organization that is well-known throughout the United States for its versatility and showmanship. The seventeen-piece dance orchestra made a fare- well appearance as the Air Force left Savannah. Captain Edward S. Bridges conducted the band in a medley of tunes from jazz through the ages.

A filled auditorium listened enthusiastically to the renowned band.

Captain Bridges led the musicians in a ragtime beat.

Pioneer Days

Mayor J. Curtis Lewis began the Pioneer Day festivities by cutting the entrance ribbon to Geecheeville and receiving the Key to the City. He also acted as the official for the Geechee "500" that was won by Walter Har- ley.

Various organizations set up booths to earn money for the Cancer Drive. The various attractions included a dunking machine, egg-throwing contest, a saloon, and a country market.

A student-faculty softball game followed by a supper provided afternoon entertainment for everyone. To close the Pioneer Activities, a casual dance was held in the student center with music provided by the Oxford Scholars.

Baseball

This year our baseball team became a member of the Georgia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. In the Conference, we tied for second place with Berry College. Our overall record was 20 wins and 8 losses. This was the best record that any base- ball team has ever had at Armstrong.

These athletic achievements were a result of good sportsman- ship and co-operation among the team members. Four of our players were selected for the All Conference Team by the coaches of member teams. They were Mike Kellet, Danny Sims, Bobby Cannon, and Tommy Cannon.
