It has been a great pleasure to tbe author of this work for a number of years past to collect together and publish in book form for permanent preservation, genealogies of his ancestry through various lines of descent from pioneer ancestors, as well as those of other families not related to him. In the ])resent instance, though not connected in any way by the ties of blood, he was happily im- pressed with the idea of compiling and publishing this work from a long and intimate acquaintance from boyhood with members of the family, some of whom were his schoolmates, and one of his early teachers in the public school is a member of the family, and the fact that he made his home with members of the family for some years, and from which associations he has many happy and tender recollections.
One of the chief objects, however, of this work, as all genealogies are, is to preserve from oblivion the more remote history of the pioneer ancestor, Andrew Newbaker, and his immediate descendants from father to son down to the present generation of the family, for the benefit of future generations.
The study of Genealogy is both interesting and of great value. Its effects ought to be beneficial in maintaining the honor and integrity of a family extending through a long line of progenitors whose

memory should be cherished with loyal devotion to endless day, and whose virtues are wt>rthy of em- iilation.
It IS commendable to be familiar with one's family history, and eminently i^roper to jjut it on record in convenient form for the benefit of future generations Such records will be of incalculable value to generations yet unborn, and will be high- ly prized by them These genealogical trees will become heirlooms in the family, and volumes will be sought for and placed iu public libraries. In the family, too, they will wield an influence, as the lives of unselfish devotion to God, conscience and family, of the forefathers, are recounted, to keep unsullied the family name.

THE NEWBAKER FAMILY OF HARDWICK, N. J.
I, Andrew Newbaker, pioneer and progenitor of the Newbaker family of New Jersey, was born in Germany or Holland in 1759. The date of his emi- gration to America is not known, but evidently was some time prior to about 1790. A brother by the name of John came with him, and located some- where in Pennsylvania.
A German or Dutch Bible was brought along from the fatherland; and was in the possession of the late Charles H. Nfw baker, which may have con- tained some old fan)ily records, but the Bible has gone astray and cannot be found.
Andrew Newbaker settled in Hardwick township, Warren county, N. J , about three miles west of the village of Stillwater, on the farm later devised to hib son, Charles H. Newbaker, and now owned and occupied by Alonzo Hill. The present residence is a modern structure erected by the present owner. There are conveyances of record to Andrew New- baker for lands in Hardwick township in the years j82(5 — 1830;- Grantors, Amos Ogden and Samuel Lan- iiing, He was possessed of considerable property, and presented each of his children with a farm.
He was married in March, 1792, to Mary Ann Kishpaugh. She was of ' Holland Dutch descent, and

Later in life they removed to a farm near Blairs- town, now owned b}- William Hill, where they lived until their death, he dying August 19, 1841 They Avere members of the Keforined church at Stillwater, of which the Rev. Jacob Senu was pastor, the name of Andrew Newbaker being in a list of church menj- bers in 1791. After the breaking up cjf the Reformed churcli at Stillwater they evidently united with the Presbyterian church. Their toml»slones at Stillwater bear the follc>wiug inscriptions:

II. Elsey Ann Newbaker, b February 20, 1795, d January 14, 1852, m Thomas H. Hankinson,* Dec- ember 9, 1813. He was b February 16, 1791, d Au- gust 27, 1868. Thomas H. Hankinson was born in what is now Stillwater township, then Hardwick. After marriage he lived oa a farm near Wintermute's foundry, above Middl^ville, for some years, when he removed to a farm in Hardwick township, about 3 miles west of Marksboro. This farm was, at that time, owned by his father-in-law, Andrew Newbaker, after whose death it was allotted to his daughter, Elsey (Newbaker) Hankinson. They lived there for many years, and there Elsey died. After her death her husband, Thomas H. Hankinson, contmued to live there for some years, until he married his second

wife, a widow Swartswelder, when he removed to Jacksonburg, where he lived retired to the time of his death. They were members of the Presbyterian church, the wife, Elsey Ann, being one of the 13 original members of the PresbyteriaD church of Still- water when it was organized in 1837. III. Sarah Ann Hankinson, b near Middleville, N. J., February 13. 1820, m Isaac R. Konkle, Sep- tember 18, 18-43. He was a son of John B. and Mary (Read) Konkle, and was b in Hardwick town- ship, Sussex county, (now Warren county), N. J., June 6, 1819, on his gi-andfather's farm, about three miles northwest of Marksboro, now owned by Clark Hill. He lived all his life in Hardwick, within a few miles from whei-e he was born. He commenced housekeeping on his father's farm, which was a part of his grandfather's farm. He lived there about two years, when he moved to Koukle's Corner, on a prop- erty now owned by Abraham K. Wintermute, where he lived for thirteen years, during which time he worked at his trade as a carpenter, having previously served an ai^prenticeship with Silas Casterline.
In 1858 he gave up his trade and moved on the farm of his father-in-law, Thomas H. Hankinson, and took up the occupation of a farmer, where he remained till 1869, when he removed to the Gar- ner H. Bowers farm near Squires' corner, which he had purchased two years previous, and where he con- tinued farming until his death, February 9, 1901. Christian church. IV. Andrew Hankinson Konkle, b August 2.5, 184-4, on a farm at that time owned by his grandfather, John B. Konkle, und within an eighth of a mile from where Isaac R. KonMe, the father of Andrew, was born. The farm is no.v ow^ned by Theodore Wilson, who married Florence Konkle, a sister of Andrew, this farm having been m the Konkle family for one hundred and forty years.
Andrew attended the district school in his neigh- borhood until he was about fifteen years of age, when he entered the Blairstown academy, then un- der the principalship of J. Henry Johnson. He at- tended there during the winter terms, and worked at home on the farm in the summer, up to the age of eighteen, when he taught school during the win- ter months and continued to work on the farm in

Hummer. At the age of 21 he took u'l^ the pro- fession of yurveyor, doing considerable work in that line in his neighborhood uutil 1872, when he re- moved to Newton, N, J., where he has made Sur- veying and Civil Engineering his entire work up to the preijent time, doing work throughout the whole of Sussex county and adjoining teiritory, occasion- ally going beyond the state lines into Pennsylvania and New York.
He has been twice married. His first wife was Achsah A... daughter of Aaron and Mary A. (Kerr) Luse, whom he married March 22, 18GG. She d March 31, 1901. He married as his second wife Mary E., daughter of John S. and Mary (Stoll) DePue, June 2(5, 1902. P O Newton, N. J. Chris- tian church. No issue.

"When Elijah was about two years of age the family removed to Hardwick township, Warren coun- ty, on the farm afterward known as the "Home- stead," where his parents spent the rest of their lives. Here Elijah grew up, and here he lived for two years after his marriage. In the spring of 1858 he removed to the farm "over the mountain," near Millbrook, in Pahaquarry township, which was the home for fifteen years, and where the fpur young- er children were born.
In 1873, through business reverses, it was nec- essary to give up the farm, and the family removed to Stillwater. In his young manhood Elijah had taught in district schools for two or three winters, and now, after twenty years of life as a farmer, he was able to qualify for teaching again, and spent the remaining nine jears of his life in this work. By so doing he kept up the home, and enabled the children to fit themselves lor the same profession.
In the summer of 1881 he became ill, and though he began his school work again in September it was necessary to give it up soon after, and he returned home. After a painful illness his death occurred on March 17, 1882.
He became a member of the Stillwater Pres- byterian church in youth, and remained in member- ship all his life, the Eev. T. B. Condit, who had received him into membership, preaching his funeral.
His wife survived him for more than seven years, her death occurring September 20, 1889, at Blairs- town, N. J., to which place the family had lately removed. She was buried beside her husband in the Stillwater cemetery. She was a member of the Meth- odist Episcopal church. C, George, Olive, Sallie, Frank, Fannie.
IV. George A. V, Hankinson, b in Hardwick township, Warren county, N. J., February 1, 1857. When one year old the family removed to Millbrook, in the same county, and at sixteen years of age to Stillwater, Sussex county. He attended the public

schoolb in those two places, and afterward stnd;ed under a private tutor. He began teaching in 1875, and taught in Sussex and Warren counties until 1888, when he was elected principal of the public school at Mountain View, Passaic county, and in 1 893 be- came principal of the school at Little Falls. In 1900 he resigned that position and became editor and proprietor of the Westfield Leader at Westfield, New Jersey.
June 27, 1894, he married Alice A., daughter of J. G. Smith, of Delaware, N. J. He is a member of and an officer m the First Presbyterian Church of Westfield. Res 46 Walnut Street," Westfield, N. J. No issue.

When he was seven years of age the family removed to Still- water, and here his boyhood and early manhood \/ere spent. At the age of 17 he began teaching in a country school near Branchvilie, and was after- wards in charge of several village schools, teaching two years at Fredon, Johnsonsburg and Blairstown. He then entered the State Normal School at West Ches- ter, Pa., graduating from both the Normal course and the Scientific course, and was later graduated from New York University.
In 1893 he was elected head of the department of Mathematics in the Boys' High Sohcol of Read- ing, Pa., and was afterwards made Vice-Principal of the school. Here he remained for ten years, aiid here, June 28, 1900, he married Mabel Z., daugh- ter of E. S. Lichtenthaeler.
While living in Reading he was elefjted super- intendent of the First Presbyterian Sunday School,

and was ordained a ruling elder of the church.

He was a son of Andrew Vought, who came from Germany, and was one of the early settlers of Frelmghuysen, Warren county. New Jersey. The tradition of the family is that three brothers came from Germau3^ Two settled in Frelinghuysen town- ship, and the other brother located elsewhere and was lost sight of. Andrew Vought settled on a farm of 125 acres in Frelinghuysen township, then a com- plete wilderness tract, which he cleared and improved. The old homestead was conveyed to his son, John Vought, and is now owned and occupied by the latter's youngest son, Levi L. Vought. John Vought and wife were earnest and faithful members of the Methodist Episcopal church at Stillwater, where they were buried. VALEDICTION
As we reach the close of this little volume, and ere we lay down our pen, we add a few parting words.
About one hundred and twenty five years ago the pioneer ancestor of the Newbaker family emi- grated from Europe to America. The motive that led him to cross the ocean to these shores is un- known. Perhaps he, in common with others, came hither to better himself in temporal afifairs. Hece he established his home, and by industry and frugality accumulated much property.
He reared a large and interesting family to bless his days. His home was a Christian home, and his family were taught to revere the religion of Jesus Christ, to honor God's house, and by his Godly ex- ample and instruction they were early led to secure an interest in saving grace, and to identify them- selves with the church of Jesus Christ.
The name of the progenitor is found in a list of members of the German or Dutch Reformed church at Stillwater in 1791. The old stone church in which he worshiped stood on the east side of the road, just within the enclosing wall of the old graveyard. After services were discontinued in this church he evidently worshiped with the Presbyterians the re- mainder of his life.
The Newbaker family and their descendants, as a whole, were, and are, a Christian people, and for the most part connected with the Presbyterian and the Methodist Episcopal churches. Many of the fam- ily were members of and worshiped at the Presby-

terian church at Stillwater, of which the Rev. T. B. Condit, one of the most eminent divines of the Pres byterian church of New Jersey, was pastor for 43 years, and who, during his long- and eventful pas- torate, received into membei'shij) in the church, bap- tized, performed the rite of holy matrimony, and preached the funeral sermons of many members of the family. Others were members of; and wor- shiped^ at, the Harmony Methodist Episcopal church near Stillwater, and in the graveyards of these two churches were laid to rest all that was mortal of many of the descendants to await the final resur- rection of the body.
The pious ancestors have long since gone to their eternal rest. May we ever bless their memory for their unyielding faith in God and the world's Redeemer. They fought well the battles of life, and thus they have passed on to their eternal rewards. May their self-denying, Godly lives and examples rest with benediction power upc-n us while we bide our time and follow in their footsteps, preserving unsullied the family name.
Dear reader, are you a follower of Jesus? If not. let me remind you of the saintly. Godly an- cestors whose forms have so long slept in their quiet graves, of their suffering for the faith, their victo- ry in death, their crowning in the Father's House, where they await the home-coming of the faithful loved ones. Let me point you to the Saviour they loved, and to the God they served. Let me entreat you to do likewise.
