CHAPTER I.

Abraham's ancestry.

There is an innate desire in all inquiring minds to learn everything that can be obtained of their ancestors, from rec- ords and tradition.

Owing to the nomadic life of the early settlers of New England, the records of families in many cases are imperfect, the children having been born in different towns, and some were not entered on record anywhere. We now propose tO' trace the ancestry and descendants of Abraham Colby, born in Amesbury, in 1715. In 1628 and 1629 about three hundred Puritans from England had settled in Salem and Charlestown. In July, 1630, about fifteen hundred more arrived, under the lead of John Winthrop, and settled on the peninsula they named Boston. Among this last arrival was Anthony Colby, from the east coast of England ; he had' espoused the Puritan faith and was No. 93 on the list of church members. In 1632 we find him in Cambridge, where he married Susanna, prob- ably a daughter of William Sargent ; in 1634 he removed to Salisbury, Ma§s. ; in 1647 he sold his house and two-acre lot to William Sargent, a seaman, and removed west of the Powow river, that separates Salisbury from Amesbury, where in 1658 he had sixty acres of land given him, and in 1660 his son John had forty, and a town lot for his son John, west of the pond.

The children of Anthony and Susanna were :

John, b. in 1633.

Sarah, b. 1635.

Then by second wife, Martha, he had :-

Isaac, b. 1640.

Rebecca, b. 1643. 1

now (1895) lives; Thomas, in the valley, forty rods west of the road ; Willa})y, north of the junction of the road east, where Ster- liuo- Colby now lives ; John, on the southwest corner of the lot, and Abraham, the father, with his youngest son, Jonathan, between the lots of John and Thomas, near the Elliot house.

CHAPTER IV.

WILLABY AND HIS DESCENDANTS. 60.

WiLLABY Colby, the second son of Abraham Colby, was born in Amesbury, February 28, 1745. On arriving at the age of twenty-one, he resolved to penetrate the for- ests of New Hampshire for the purpose of selecting a location for his father, four brothers, and himself. The spot selected was on Wood Hill, so called, in the town- ship of Bow. He soon went back to his Amesbury home, and married Sarah Sargent of Newtown, and com- menced making arrangements to emigrate to their forest home. His first child was born in the fall of 1767 ; the next spring they all started for their new home in Bow, his wife on horseback with her child in her arms. He soon built him a frame house, east of the road where his son Philip afterwards lived. He was well-skilled in the use of carpenter's tools, and would glide over a frame as safely as on terra firma. Their first log house stood a short distance south of where William A. Elliot now lives (1892), where his father, Abraham, with the youngest son, Jonathan, lived and died. In July, 1777, Willaby Colby with seven others, under Capt. Benjamin Bean, marched for the relief of Ticonderoga ; on their arrival at Charlestown, N. H., news came of its evacua^ tion and orders to return, they were in service seven days. He was one of the selectmen in 1796 and 1797. In 1792 he, with Enoch Noyes and Timothy Dix, were chosen a committee to accept of the meeting house, if the work was done according to previous agreement. In

JOHN AND HIS DESCENDANTS. 355.

2. John, the third son of Abraham and Elizabetli Blaisdell,

his wife, was born in Amesbury, February 28, 1749, and was about nineteen years of age when they came to Bow. The lot of land assigned to him was twenty acres off from the southerly side of the purchase, and he built his house on the side hill south of the brook crossing the road, where a depression is still to be seen. Soon after arriving at his majority he married Hannah Simonds, some ten years his senior, a woman of mixed blood of native stock. Their children were : John, b. February 17, 1772, Reuben, b. January 4, 1774, and Hannah, b. January, 1776. In 1789 he bought fifty acres of John Bryant, off from the northwest end of lot 4 in the 17 range of lots. After the marriage of his son John he occupied this additional purchase, and John, the father, sold out on Wood hill and went on an adjoining tract, in 1805, the property now owned by Cyrus, son of John, the son of John, the son of Abraham. He was a man of integrity, one of the founders of the Methodist church in Bow, and was several times elected on the board of selectmen.

JONATHAN COLBY AND HIS DESCENDANTS.

2. Jonathan Colby, the youngest child of Abraham and Elizabeth, was born February 13, 1762. He was only six years old when the family emigrated to Bow. On arriving at his majority he mar. Martha Alexander, b. November 6, 1760, a daughter of Samuel Alexander, an early settler on the river road in Boav. The older brothers being located on their respective lots, it devolved on Jonathan to care for his aged parents in their declin- ing years, and to inherit the homestead. Soon after the death of his father the old house was superseded by a two story, single house, a few rods north of the old one, which crippled his resources and, having a large family, he was obliged to struggle to provide for their necessities. The new house was built about 1804. After his decease in 1831, the house was sold to parties in Concord, and Silas Call moved it, on wheels, to the corner of State , and Washington streets, where, with an addition, it may now be seen in fair condition, in 1894.
