INTRODUOTIOX".

*' He who careth not from whence he came careth little whither he goeth."

Genealogy is a subject of peculiar interest to those only of whom it treats, and is too often neglected even by those of kindred blood. At first sight, nothing seems less attrac- tive than a mere register of names and dates of past generations personally unknown to us. But if we reflect that each name here recorded is a memorial of a human heart that once lived and loved, that had its joys and sor- rows, its cares and burdens, its hopes and fears, conflicts and achievements, opportunities of life improved or wasted, it will illumine those generations with the light of a living reality.

How important each of those dates to some circle of loving and confiding human hearts !

When human life approaches the boundary between the great w^orld of the seen and the far greater world of the unseen, among the few aspirations which then cluster around the soul is a strong desire that something may remain, some simple memento that such an individual once lived.

To the living representatives of each family circle is com- mitted the sacred trust of perpetuating its memories.

One of the best memorials of the " dear departed " is a genea- logical history distributed among the families of the living, which thus inspires them with a deeper interest in bequeath- ing to future generations a connected and complete family history.

8

4 INTRODUCTION.

The recognition of existing relationships also creates and fosters a feeling of fraternal brotherhood among many who knew not before that any kindred blood existed between them, thus enlarging and purifying the circle of family feel- ing. Many families have kept some kind of a record of births and deaths; yet there is none in existence sufficiently definite or extensive whereby many of the present generation can know from which branch of this family they descended, or who were their ancestral connections.

The object of this work is to make a correct record of one of the numerous branches of the Adams family in America, which dates back to 1685, and has already reached the seventh and eighth generations. In this book the branches of this family are so classified and arranged, that members may easily ascertain who were their ancestors, and what their connection to any other descendant.

It has been the endeavor of the compiler to give a correct record of all the members of this family, as far as possible to obtain the necessary data ; and it is believed that a very tolerable degree of accuracy has been attained.

In some instances, a disagreement in dates has been found to exist between the records of different individuals and towns, and those upon monuments in cemeteries.

In the year 1752, the commencement of the year was changed from March 25 to Jan. 1.

Public records made within twenty or thirty years of that time often omit to state whether the date was old or new style; consequently, dates occurring about that time may be given a year earlier or later than they were in reality.

But although accuracy in dates is desirable, yet it is not deemed so essential as a correct statement of naoaes, family connection, generation, birthplace, residence, &c.

It has been found impossible to obtain the history of a few branches of this family, although it has been carefully sought.

INTRODUCTION. O

But, although the record is incomplete in some directions, it may lead at some future period to a more perfect history of all subdivisions of this family.

Letters of inquiry have very generally been responded to promptly ; but in other cases no reply whatever has been elicited.

The compiler is under obligations to many of the friends for encouragement and substantial assistance; and all such will please accept his thanks. Mr. Ward Adams of Waldoboro', Me., and Mrs. Amanda Thompson of Union, Me. (not to mention others), have furnished extensive returns. It is hoped that a due amount of indulgence will be exercised on account of any errors or omissions which may have occurred, when the friends consider what has been accomplished, and the variety of detail and dates here presented.

It has been the compiler's endeavor to serve all impartially ; and the record is in accordance to the interest parties have taken, and the extent of information they have furnished.

In the commencement of this genealogical research, the publication of it in book-form was not anticipated, and minute details were not at first sought.

The line of descent upon the female side has not in all cases been followed out, particularly so in regard to the second generation.

But little reference has been made to the private history of individuals, as but little is known to the compiler; and many of the incidents given are such as the friends have furnished, though in some cases they have been condensed.

The coat of arms which is placed upon the title-page of this book was obtained by Rev. James Adams ^ (son of James ^) from an English gentleman who investigated the subject by his request, and gave it as belonging to this family. A refer- ence to it maybe found in an English work, entitled "Burke's Peerage." It is given as a family memento, and a fine

specimen of English heraldry with a noble motto.

6 INTRODUCTION.

To the relatives and friends here recorded, this little volume is now committed. As it shall better acquaint them with their ancestors and kindred, so may it inspire them with greater regard for parentage, and the perpetuation of family memories among the living. With Cowper we may say,

" My boast is not that I deduce my birth From loins enthroned, and rulers of the earth ; But higher far my proud pretensions rise, The son of parents passed into the skies."

Franklin, Mass., 1874.

G. A.

EXPLANATIONS.

The descendants are arranged by families in successive generations, in the numerical order of descent; the line of descent being given at the top of each page.

A general enumeration is made by figures placed at the left of descendants' names j each being numbered in the order of birth.

The individual number of parent is placed at the head of their family record. By means of these numbers, connections may be readily traced from one generation to another.

The names of persons whom members have married are placed next under their own names, and marked m, at the left of each name. Dates of births and deaths are placed to the right of names, the latter always to the extreme right.

Birthplaces are often given in parenthesis upon the line below the individual name.

The figures attached to a name denote the generation to which the person belongs; thus, John ^ is the first generation, John 2^ is the second; and so on.

Abbreviations used are as follows,

6., born ; c?., died ; i>., deceased, date unknown; m., married ; r., residence ; dau., daughter.

A family index is given at the end of the book.

GENEALOGY

OF

JOHN AMIS AND HIS DESCENDANTS.

John Adams, the ancestor of the families herein recorded, was born in Crediton, Devonshire, Eng., in the year 1685. The exact date he lauded in America is not known ; but evidently it was soon after the year 1700, for he was married in 1713. He was one of the first settlers in that part of Wrentham which is now known as South Franklin. Being a weaver by trade, he at first pursued that caUing, but subse- quentl}^ purchased knd for a farm, and lived upon it during the remainder of his life. It has been occupied by his descendants ever since his decease, and is now the home of Mr. Peter Adams. What remained of the old house was demolished by '^ the great blow of 1815."

The circumstances of his departure from the mother-coun- try early in life are illustrative of her tyranny, and of the rising spirit of liberty among her sons. He was seized by a ''press-gang" (unknown to his friends), and forced to serve as cabin-boy on board of a ship-of-war. When the ship came into the port of Salem, the crew were given a brief furlough. Here young Adams struck for liberty by refusing to return to involuntary servitude.

The ship sailed on to Boston, where a reward was offered for his capture and return ; they intending to shoot him at the yard-arm. In his wanderings he came into the present town of Medfield, and was there seized, mounted upon ahorse

9

10 GENEALOGY OF JOHN ADAMS

and started for Boston to be surrendered for the paltry reward. But he managed to elude their grasp, and, after a hair-breadth escape from recapture, found refuge in Wrentham, now Franklin.

It was the culmination of the same spirit of resistance to British oppression which afterwards led to the Declaration of American Independence ; and it is not becoming in those whose fathers rose in rebelHon to gain political freedom, to asperse his name or memory for maintaining his right to per- sonal liberty. The freedom which he thus achieved for him- self, numbers of his descendants afterwards fought to gain for their country. All honor to his memory for such an early' vindication of his manhood! " Resistance to tyranny is obe- dience to God."

A portion of an old letter from his brother Peter is still in existence, and is copied as a matter of history, as well as a reminiscence of " ye olden time."

London, April y^ 25th, 1730.

LovEiNG Brother, This day I received a letter from our Cousin Samuel Adams and the letter you sent them. I never knew you was living till about 10 Days agoe and sent down for your letter. I have been married in London this Twelfth year and have seen many voyages to New England a late years. About fourten years agoe I put your name in the News at Boston to hear of you but not hearing of you then, I gave you over for Dead. My name was allways in y^ news, I being Master of a vessel, so that if you had but minded the news you might have thought of me. If this comes to your hand I hope you will lett me hear from you. Our Sister is Edward Mounie's widow of four Children. Joseph is Dead many years agoe, and our Uncle Nath^^ and Roger and Cousin James. There is liveing besides our sister and 4 Children, Cousin Samuel and Seven Children, and Aunt Adams and three [The rest of the p^ige is missing: the other side is as follows] : ;

A\D HIS DESCENDANTS. 11

If you should receive this letter, I would have you mind the directions I have Wrote, and the first of your neighbours that Goes to Boston give it to them and Desire them to goe to the Coffee house and there are bags that belong to the Ships that are coming to London, and it will come as safe as If you bad brought it yourself If you should Goe to Boston your- self I would have you call on my Landlady M'■^ Hannah Demings at the South End.

The letter closes abruptly, with no signature. It is written in a business-hand, and is presumed to be very good for those days. It was apparently written upon a half sheet of foolscap ; and the last quarter of it is gone. Peter afterward married Mrs. Demings, and settled in Beaufort, N.C. The parental names are not known, or whether they were living when he (John) was forced to leave his native land.

Many interesting facts pertaining to his history, which might have been gathered from living lips a few years ago, are now lost.

A low stone marks the place of his burial in Franklin Ceme- tery, bearing the following inscription :

No other record of marriages in the family can be found ; but it is known that two of the daughters were married to a Howard and a Cook, but their names or residences are un- known. All the others, but Elisabeth, lived in Franklin, then Wrentham. John was known by the prefix of '^ Ensign," which appears upon his gravestone, and also upon the town records, and was doubtless a military title. His house stood a few rods west of the present railroad crossing on Union Street.

His farm extended to the centre of the town, and embraced the present Common, which he conveyed to the town for

church and public uses about the year 1788. AccorJmg to town records, the consideration for the whole was about sev- enty-five dollars of our present currency. He died at the age of seventy-eight years. It is not known from what family his wife originated, as their marriage does not appear upon the Wrentham Town Records.

Peter succeeded to the ancestral estate. But little is known of the personal characteristics of these brothers, ex- cept that they were industrious, good citizens, and shared in the public duties of the town. Peter lived to the age of eighty years.

'Jhe Hon. Jabez Fisher, the husband of Mary Adams, was extensively known, and highly respected. He represented the town for many years in the General Court of Massachu- setts, and held other public offices. Of her it was said by a contemporary, that " she was worthy to be a queen." Theron Metcalf, one of the revisers of the State Laws, and for many years a judge of the Supreme Court of Massachusetts, was a grandson of Hannah Adams.

The Fisher and Metcalf descendants are numerous ; but the task of tracing them for the present work has not been undertaken.

" The patriarclis of the race have gone To the repubhc of the dead : Soon we shall follow, one by one, Our bodies 'neath the turf be laid ; But, horn in spirit, we shall rise. To higher life beyond the skies."

Timothy had four children ; but their names and ages are unknown. Doubtless they all died young, as his gravestone bears his own name, " Jemima his wife, and four children." He^died at the age of thirty-eight years. Thaddeus pur- chased the lands comprising the present town farm, which he cleared and improved, erected buildings, and made it his home for life.

Being a blacksmith, he taught each of his sons the same trade, and set them an example of honest industry. He lived to the age of eighty-two years.

John formerly lived in Franklin, where all his children (ex- cept the youngest) were born. He removed to Walpole, ' N.H., about 1800, and died there, aged eighty-eight years.

THIRD GENERATION. 17

Nathaniel was a soldier in the Revolutionary War, and took an active part in the battle of Bunker Hill.

The writer well remembers of hearing him relate some of the incidents of the battle. Said he, " We were in an awful condition to die ; for our hearts were full of malice. All we thought of or cared for was to kill the cursed British.'^

He stated they took as good aim every time they fired as they would to shoot a partridge.

He held a captain's commission either during or after the war, and was known by the title of " Captain " ever after. He was afterwards a trader, and for many years kept store, and manufactured straw goods, at the corner near the ceme- tery.

He removed to Providence, R.I. , about 1815, and died there at the age of eighty-three, respected and beloved by all who knew him.

William lived and died upon his father's estate. He was noted for his ready wit and outspoken frankness. The recital of a few anecdotes concerning him may not be inappropriate. Upon one occasion, Dr. Emmons, being very indignant because the choir sang some very quick music, accompanied with the bass-viol or violin (which he abhorred, as connected with dancing), after he had entered the church to conduct the Sunday-afternoon services, left the church abruptly, and went home.

The next morning, Mr. Adams called at the doctor's, early, upon an errand, and was summoned to his study. Inquiring the cause, the doctor said he wished to know how people felt about his leaving them without any afternoon service. He replied, he could not speak for others, but could tell him how he felt, if he desired to know. Upon being assured that he would like to hear his opinion, he said, " I thought you acted like a d d old fool, I did: well, I didy Notwithstanding his bluntness, the doctor valued his opinions highly, and often consulted him about his material interests.

2*

18 THIRD GENERATION.

During the last sickness of Mr. Adams, and only a few days before his death, Dr. Emmons visited him, and, while there, inquired of him if he had made his peace with God. At once he replied, " God and I never had any trouble."

Deacon Blake once called upon him during the ravages of the canker-worms upon his orchard. He remarked to the deacon, that he never could see what the ^Ha^mal critters'^^ were made for. ^' Oh," said the deacon, " they are God's army : he sends them to perform his will." " Then," said Mr. Adams, " I'd thank him not to parade his army in my orchard."

Upon another occasion, a horse-thief was to be examined before James Adams, Esq. Quite a crowd was present; and, some little time having passed after the appointed hour, the culprit expressed his wonder that the justice was so tardy. Uncle Bill (as he was familiarly called) sang out in his sharp, peculiar voice, " You needn't worry : your damnation don't slumber."

Rachael Adams, who married Asa Fisher, lived near the present railroad depot. The house was used subsequently for a hotel, and was finally burned about 1867. She lived to be seventy-two years old.

Jemima and Joel resided in Union, Me. Joel was one of the first settlers in Stirlington district, having purchased land there in the year 1777. According to Sibley's History of Union, Me., Capt. Joel Adams was a Revolutionary soldier between three and four years, and was paid off in Continental money. In coming home through Hartford, he bought a pair of buckskin breeches with it, paying fifty-seven dollars, and three dollars of the same money for a dinner. His wedding was the first in the town, and took place in 1781. The cere-

mony being over, and the company seated, the mother of the bride observed, '^ Mr. Justice, you have but half done your work." ^^ Why not ? " said he. " Why, you have not pro- nounced them man and wife." With some confusion, he asked them to rise again ; and the ceremony was satisfactorily con- cluded. Peter was also a Revolutionary soldier. He was stationed in Boston, and died of a fever. James lived upon the homestead, and was highly esteemed both in public and private life. He was deacon of the church, and justice of the peace, for many years.

The children of Thaddeus (true to their ancestral nature) were all married, and had children. Lucinda Gillmore lived opposite the old schoolhouse on the Mount (so called). She had but one child ; and her descent is now extinct. Abigail Tha3^er lived in Wrentham, near Sheldonville. The family removed, in 1822, to Hampden, Me. Thaddeus, jun., settled in Brewer, Me., where he practised his trade, that of a black- smith.

Timothy settled at first in Bucksport, but subsequently removed to Hampden. He was a shipsmith, and bequeathed that vocation to his surviving sons.

Alpheus was the " home boy," and undertook the care and maintenance of his parents during life. By great energy and perseverance, combined with a good trade, he managed

FOURTH GENERATION. 23

to payoff quite an encumbrance on the farm, support two fam- ilies, rear six children, and emerge from it all free from debt. In 1836 he sold the farm (then in a high state of cultivation) to the town, and removed to Nashua, N.H., where his oldest son then resided. After remaining there about ten years, he returned to Franklin, and built him a house near the corner of Pleasant and Main Streets.

At the age of sixty-six, he passed to the unseen life, of quick consumption, lamented by a large circle of friends. He was noted for industry, frugality, strict integrity, and loyalty to his convictions of truth.

In religion he was ^' Orthodox," having been trained, from' early life, under the teachings of Dr. Emmons.

The following extracts from an obituary notice of Mrs. A. P. Adams, written by her favorite pastor (Rev. Mr. Pel ton), and^ printed in '^ The Congregationalist," are inserted as a faithful] record of her history :

*^ Died in Franklin, Mrs. Achsa P. Adams, of pleuro- pneumonia. Another valuable life is closed. The four- score years of this ^ elect lady' formed a life of more than ordinary interest. Not behind any, perhaps, as a stirring, prudent housewife, or faithful Christian mother, in consistent devotion to truth and righteousness for fifty-eight years in the church she was conspicuous. Her faith was that which works by love. She was one of those who urged, and finally established, the sabbath school, almost under the protest of Dr. Emmons, more than fifty years ago. When the infirmities of age prevented her presence in the public assembly, or deaf- ness hindered such enjoyment, it was her delight to meet the sisters at her room. She was among the foremost in active benevolence, working with her own hands more than most for the needy. After the death of her husband, sixteen years feince, in the retirement of home with her children, she still ondeavored to do what she could for others. There she might

be seen, now quietly tripping about the house and yard, caring for the flowers about the door, or the plants in the window ; now in her room, neat and tidy, with Bible, Watts, religious books, and papers ; now with needles, patchwork, or garments for the destitute, a Dorcas truly, to the last. There was no useless part of her long life."

ALPHEUS ALDRICH.

*'Tt is pleasant to review the life of a good man. Mr. Aldrich, who has lately passed away at the ripe age of seventy years, settled in the town of Collins, Erie County, N.Y., in 1841, while yet mostly a wilderness. His history is peculiarly inter- esting as showing the progress a man may make, who in earnest devotes himself to farming even late in life. It is often a mooted question whether farming pure and simple brings its reward. Many suppose it compares very unfavorably with thrift in trade. The pioneer who grapples with heavy-timbered land would seem to have a difficult task

compared to the settler on the rich prairie, where, if he simply plough and build, he may possess at once a farm with all the advantages of long cultivation. Mr. Aldrich was a machinist in the city of Boston till thirty-seven years old, and had no acquaintance with farming till he moved upon his wilderness farm. He had only money enough to buy out a settler's claim on fifty acres with nothing paid upon the land. Here at middle age, and penniless, he began a new and untried enterprise and hewed his way to competence. Hav- ing paid for his first fifty acres, he purchased more, and finally cleared a hundred and fifty acres out of the wilderness ; and one hundred acres were covered with small cradle-knolls, which had to be ploughed and scraped into the hollows, so as to make an even surface. This was a labor little less than the original clearing. He reared and educated a family of four children. At the time of his 'decease he owned two hundred and fifty acres of land, with good improvements, and especially one of tlie largest and best constructed barns in the town, with fifty cows and other stock.

''He conducted all his farm operations with more than the usual intelligence and prudence. He was not content to follow old routitie where a better had been devised. For many years he economized his winter fodder by the use of the large power straw cutter, and mixing the different quali- ties of fodder, so as to save all. He eagerly sought all improved methods, and was a liberal patron of the agricul- tural press. Yet, with all these indiscretions, he left a prop- erty worth twenty thousand dollars. Dairying was his speciality; and the product of his cows in butter, cheese, and the pork made from the refuse milk or whey, brought all his income.

'' How many country merchants can show a better result at the end ? "

The following lines, written by Simeon P. Adams soon after leaving the parental roof, are so expressive of sentiments which will find a response in many hearts, that they are here recorded for preservation, although incomplete, as the last two verses cannot be given. No copy of the lines exists; and these are given from memory :

FIFTH GENERATION^. 39

" I love my old home : 'tis the place of my birth, The spot in my memory most hallowed on earth ; For there was I cradled and fondly caressed, And tenderly reared on a kind mother's breast.

" I love my old home ; for the loved ones are there, Who remember me oft in the still hour of prayer, And, though crooked and wayward the path I have trod, Plead for me the friendship and favor of God.

" I love my old home ; for it brings to ray heart The charms of true friendship un mingled with art : There are parents and brothers and sister to greet, And kindred affections in all that I meet."

John Q. Adams was a soldier in the late war, and served from August, 1862, to June, 1865. He was in the battle of Drury Bluff, where his regiment (the Eighth Maine Volunteer Infantry) lost ninety-six in killed^ wounded, and missing. He was also present at the fighting near Bermuda Hundred, Hatcher's Farms, and afterwards at Coal Harbor, where the regiment lost heavily. At the Point of Rocks the regiment took the enemy^s works, and captured fifty-four prisoners. Through all these and other conflicts he was not wounded, although balls passed through his clothes ; and he had many narrow escapes. Besides suffering the inevitable hardships of a soldier's life, he was several times sick and in the hospital, but at last returned home in safety.

Israel S. Adams served the government as captain of schooner " Dr. Rodgers," engaged in transporting forage, <fec., for the army. He sailed from Lincolnville in April, 1862, for Fortress Monroe, and was ordered to Yorktown^ and was present when McClellan took that place. He was at Fortress Monroe when the famous battle occurred between the rebel ram ''Merrimack" and the little '' Monitor." After McClellan's retreat, while at Harrison's Landing with a fleet of some four hundred vessels, the rebels opened fire from the opposite side of the river with three batteries, doing much damage. The maintop-mast of ^' The Dr. Rodgers " was shot oifj and the vessel was hit in various places.

Charles R. Adams enlisted in the Thirty-third Regiment Massachusetts Infantry, under Col. Maggi in May, 1862. It. was under the call of Gov. Andrew for troops after the retreat of Gen. Banks from Virginia. He served with the regiment in Virginia until December, when his company was trans- ferred to the Forty-first, under Col. Chickering. The regi- ment embarked in January, 1863, in the Banks Expedition, for Louisiana, where they arrived after a perilous sea-voyage, and at once entered the campaign, following the rebels three hundred miles into the interior, to Opelousas, La. Here the regiment were mounted and equipped as the Third Massachu- setts Cavalry.

After serving in the Nineteenth Army Corps at various points in that section of the Union, the regiment was sent North in June, 1864, and served in the memorable campaign of Sheridan in the Valley of the Shenandoah, on his way to join Gen. Grant. During the first battle, which was at Berry- ville, near Winchester, Va., Sept. 19, young Adams was killed. The officer in command of his company said of him, " He was a good soldier, and fell with his face to the enemy,

SIXTH GENERATION. 73

Cyrus Wesley and Albert A. Adams enlisted in the Ninth Regiment Maine Volunteers, in September, 1861. They pro- ceeded at once with the regiment to Washington, and were ordered to Annapolis, Md., where they embarked for Port Royal, S.C. They were out in a terrible gale, in which the whole fleet came near being lost. They were present at the capture of Port Royal by Commodore Dupont, and were stationed at Hilton Head until the last of January, when they were ordered to Fernandina, Fla. In April, Wesley was taken prisoner; suffered, in three prisons, of starvation and sickness, until October, when he was exchanged, and taken to Washington, D.C., where he died Oct. 31, 1862.

The details of his terrible experiences are too sickening for recital. Albert remained with his regiment, fighting, and enduring hardships. In January, 1863, they returned to Hilton Head, and were ordered to take Morris Island, under Gen. Strong.

Here they suffered every thing that mortals could, until they re-enlisted, and were sent home for thirty days. Next they were sent to Virginia, under Gen. Butler, and took part 'in the battle of Bermuda Hundreds. In May, 1864, they embarked for West Point, and from there to White House, where they joined the Eighteenth Army Corps, and marched to Petersburg, sharing in its battles and exposures until the close of the war. He was in twenty-eight battles and skirmishes.

W. M. E. Adams entered the service of the United States as a soldier soon after the first battle of Bull Run, and served thirty-seven months in the Army of the Potomac, during the years of 18G2, 1863,and 1864. For the first year and a half he was in the ranks, but afterwards served as orderly to various generals. During the whole time, he was always at the front, and never in the hospital, being neither sick nor wounded ; yet he sufiered, in common with his comrades, some of the greatest perils and hardships of the war. One incident will serve as an example r one day early in January, his company (Company I, Massachusetts Eighteenth) forded a river, where the water was nearly up to the arm-pits, with a swift current, and the weather so cold, that the margin of the stream was fringed with ice, and their clothes froze stiff immediately upon their emerging from the water. They then marched a long distance, recrossed the same stream by another ford, and camped over night upon the frozen ground, without any fires, or change of clothing. He was in numerous skirmishes, and took part in the following battles :

Hanover Court House, Seven Days Peninsula, Yorktown, Second Bull Run, Antietam, Frederi(;ksburg, Chancellorsville, Upperville, Emmetsburg, Gettysburg, Culpeper Court House, Rappahannock Station, Bristol Station, Mine Run, Wilderness, Laurel Hill, Spottsylvania Court House, Old Church, Coal Harbor, North Anna, Petersburg. For all this important ser- vice he only received one hundred dollars bounty in addition to the regular pay. He was subsequently chosen captain of a military company in Brattleborough, Vt.

George W. Adams enlisted as a soldier in the winter of 1864. He was in the battle of the Wilderness, and marched beside Charles Wilson of Franklin, who was the first man killed in Grant's campaign in Virginia. At the battle of Laurel Hill he was sunstruck, but in a day or two got better, and rejoined his regiment. But four days afterwards,, at the battle of North Anna, he was again prostrated by sunstroke,

which paralyzed both legs. After long delay, he was sent to Alexandria, and afterwards to Boston. After several months, lie was discharged, but never fully recovered ; and it was undoubtedly the cause of his death.

John Q. Adams, 2d (who is a sea-captain), experienced a very narrow escape from death by shipwreck in March and April, 1872. The schooner "Ada Ames," Capt. Adams, sailed from Eockland, Me., for Washington, D.C., laden with granite. They were not heard from for forty-four days, when she re- turned in safety. The schooner battled with a succession of gales ; but, with good management, she withstood them, though the crew would have abandoned her if an opportunity had presented itself. The owners and underwriters of the vessel and cargo had given them up as lost ; and the friends of those on board abandoned all hope, except a possible one, that the crew might have been rescued, and carried to some distant port. Their safe arrival caused much rejoicing.
