McNAMARA

Congdon Walkup

175. John McNamara was born in Dublin, Ireland, in 1718, and died in Uxbridge, Mass., Aug. 14th, 1801. (Uxbridge records.)

He must have left Dublin about 1735. The story goes that he was an only son and heir to a large estate. His uncle and aunt, in whose care he was left when an orphan, were next heir to him. His uncle was bound to get him out of the way, and his aunt thought of this plan, and he told the story, believing as his aunt told him, that his uncle would poison him or do something worse if he would not do as she planned. So she suc- ceeded in getting him aboard ship and concealed him in a packing box.

He had with him his bagpipes on which he excelled as a performer and the captain and passengers paid him for his performances. Thus he earned his passage to America and had some money in his pocket when he landed.

He played along through the country, and once while he was traveling along the road (some time after- wards) he came to a farm house where he thought he would put up. Walking up he saw a lovely creature "milking a cow." This was the fair Ruth Parkhurst, with whom he fell in love and afterwards wed.

Ruth Parkhurst was born in Framingham, Mass., and died in Upton, Mass. They became very well off and left large tracts of land near Whitinsville. They had one child. I

ED\A/^ARD PERRY

OF SANDWICH, MASS.

(Extract from genealogy of Edmund Freeman of Lynn, Mass., "First Settlers of New England," by Sav- age):

300. "Freeman, Edmund, of Lynn, came in the Abi- gail 1635, age 45, with others of name: Mary, 50; John, 35; Thomas, 24; John, 9, and Cecelia, 4. All entered at the Custom House 17th of June in London, but we know of six others for the same ship entered July 1st, as fol- lows, viz. :

Edward, 34.

His wife Elizabeth, 35, and four children (not of Edward, but of Edmund).

Alice, 17,

Edmund, 15.

Elizabeth, 12.

John, 8.

Whom Mary and four others were who took their passage on the earlier day is all unknown, as well as the Edward with wife Elizabeth.

Conjecture will find no benefit from the records, it is thought, for we are not able to determine whether he brought a wife; yet we know he had one at Sandwich, but not her name. Presume we may conjecture (from his will of 21st June, 1682, proven Nov. 2nd following, naming sons Edmund, John and Edward Perry, as the wife of Edward Perry was Mary) that he had married on this side of the water a Widow Perry, though Mr. Winsor took a divers view as if Edward Perry had mar- ried a daughter of Freeman no daughter is ever men- tioned in this country except the two found in the old records of London Custom House, Alice, who married Nov. 24th, 1639, deacon Wm. Paddy and died at Ply- mouth, Apr. 24th, 1651, and Elizabeth, who married, in 1645, John Ellis."

PERRY

From being named as son, in the will of Edmund Freem.an, it may be that Edward Perry of Sandwich, Mass., had married a daughter of Freeman's, but more probably his mother had been second wife of Freeman (Edward or Edmund), by wife Mary (which may have been daughter of Freeman) he had Samuel, born 1664, and probably others.
