PREFACE

The objeet of this work is to collect and present in durable form a record of the Trask Family. It is int-crided to be a memorial to the dead ; a complete guide for those living, Avho wish to explore the field of consan;2;uiiiity ; and a deliverance to all, in gen- erations following, who wish to trace back the line of their lineal ancestors to the Pilgrim Fathers, from the perplexing examination of volumes of almost obliterated Records, pertaining to the Ancient Towns in the Commonwealth of Massachusetrs. In the preparation of this work, I have had numerous difficulties to contend with.

On consulting the oldest living members of the family in Maine, I found that not only their stock of knowledge in facts was very limited concerning our ancestry, but that their knowIedi>;e in traditions was ditto. However, guided by the tradition that our family originally came from Brentwood, N. H., I visited that town, where, by the aid of the Record, and information derived from the desendants of Par-

son Trask, now livio;; tliere, I made certain the cor- rectness of th<» tra«liti«)n. From lirentwood. I traced the family to Lexin-j^toii. I\Iass., and thence to Beverlv \t the ahov.' named towns, also at

Boston and ^^alem, I collected all the data and in- formation that I could for the work. I regret that I have heen al*le to gather no more historical facts concerning our earlier ancestors; hull feel that I have exhausted what resoui-ces have l^een within my reach. Ihe memhers of the family livin^i; are so scattered that I have with difficulty obtained neces- sary data and informatidn concerning them ; and there are a tew families from which I have been wholly unable to obtain material for a record of them in detail. Concerniijg the dates wliich ap- pear in this work, the utmost pains has been taken for their accuracy ; and when yiossihle information has been obtained from several sources, in regard to the most Important ones. To all who have sent me information, 1 take this opportunity to express my tlianks. I also desire to express sj)ecial thanks to Wni. B. Trask, Es(j., of Boston, a descendant of Capt. Wm. Trask, of iSalem, for the general infor- mation I have received from him. I would now sugiiest that the heads of families keep a continuous record of their immediate branches, so that, should it ever be desired to extend this work, the material for it will be at hand. I now submit this volume to my friends, hoping it may in some degree meet their approval.

INTRODUCTION.

Tne name of Trask, though it has not been known tb tame, is nevertlieless a name of which we may jnstly feel proud. We believe that the degree of family pride, ^vhich inspires each member with a de- termination to make his or her record in life such aa will do honor to the family name, is commendable. The Trask family have ever been characterized for their industrious habits. The family has never represented a large amount of wealth ; but, as far as we have been able to ascertain, the most of ( wv ancestors accumulated considerable estates. As a rule, those who have borne the name thus far, ha '^'e been examples of sobriety, energy, and enterprise. (This rule, however, like others, has its exceptions.) The name Trask first appears in this country in the early history of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Capt. Wm. Trask was a friend and companion of Gov. John Endicott ; and as Endicott's party came over to this country, and settled at Salem, in the year 1628, it is probable that Capt. Wra. came over the same year ; however, he settled at Salem, and

INTRODUCTION.

from him descendefl the Trask family known as the i^alem hranch. Osman Trask came to this country probably about 1045, and settled in Beverly, Mass., situated north of Salem. It appears that Osman, though much 3'ounger, was a brother of Capt. Wm. ; and all the conclusion Ave can arrive at is, that they had the same father, but not the same mother. From Osman descended the Beverly branch ; and, as far as can be ascertained, all the Trasks in this Country descended from one of the above mentit.ned branches.

Henry Trask \\h.^ contemporary with Capt. Wm- and Osman. (he may have been a brother) ; but his only son, Henry, died at about 21 years of age, so there aj)pears to be no male descendants from him.

Nathaniel Trask, grandson of Osman. settled in Lexington, Mass , in 1715, and he is the head of the Lexington branch. His son Nathaniel, or Parson Trask, as he was called, settled at Brentwood. N. XL. in 1748 ; and the c^reater number of the Trasks in Maine are his descendants. There are a number of scattering families of the name in Maine, all '»f which, I think may be traced back to either the Sfr- lem or Beverly stock. The most important of these are living in the Kennebec valley, south of Augusta.

There is one other branch to be mentioned, known as the Braintree bi-anch of Braintree, ^Liss., which is either of the Salem or Beverly stock.

It is probable that Capt. VVm. and Osman Trask came from Somersetshire, Kng., though from cor- respondence with Trasks now residing there, con- ducted by Wm. B. Trask, nothing has been ascer- tained to that effict, or to show, what is probably

INTRODUC'J'ION. y

the fact, that we and they were descended from the same common ancestor. It is unne^^essary to add that the Trasks are of pure English stock.

We will now proceed to take up the family by generation. It will be seen tiiat the name of each person is preceeded by a number. These numbers are to distinguish the person, and they run consecu- tively through the Genealogy, from the first name to the last.

Where a name appears the second time it has the same number.

Where persons died while young, or where noth- ing is known of them, their names only appear in the record of their father's family. The small numbers at the right of names denote the generation to which the }ierson belongs, and the names foll^'ing, en- closed in parenthesis, are the lineal ancestors.

Kockingham, west of Exeter. The Exeter river runs through the town. It is quite a tliicklv settled town, but has no regular village. Ic contains about 1 000 inhabitants: was incorporated in 1742. The farm on which the Parson lived is situated near the center of the town. An old. fashioned two story house, built by him, still stands, and is occupied by his great grandchildren. The church is near by, and is situateii 6 miles from Exeter, and 16 miles from Haverhill, Mass. The church edifice, which the Parson occupied, gave place to a new one in 1811, which is the present church edifice of Brent- wood. He was the first minister of the Cono-reiia- tional church, and in 1751 it numbered 40 members. The following is an extract from the agreement of settlement entered into by the Parson and Parish of Brentwood, taken Irom page 47, Old Record of Brentwood.

ISoon after he was of ase, he went to Aroostook County, with a view to take up land for a farm, but an early frost that year caused him to abandon the enterprise, and he returned to the homestead farm, after six months absence. He then undertook to pay for the homestead farm, which, by untiring labor, he succeeded in doing. He sf)ent a lite of constant labor, improving bis farm in the interim between the busy seasons of the agricultural year. A monument to his cease- less toil may be seen in the walls of stone upon the homestead farm in New Sharon. There probably is not another farm in Maine with as much stone wall upon it; the number of rods is estimated at about 1000, and it was nearly all built by him He was a man that always had a word to offer in behalf of Christianity and morality.

born April '1^^, I800. After lie was six years of age, he had no a'i vantages of attending summer school : and he attended school m winter, only about two months in the vear. He left home to earn his own living at an early age. In 1852, at the age of 19 he worked his passage around Cape Horn, in the bark Gold Hunter, to Calif. rnia. He worked ia. the mines the most of the time at Columbia, Toulumne County, until 1856 when he returned to Maine. August 24. 1856, he married Miss Nancy B. Rich, of Atkinson, who was born Octo- ber 13, 1831. They lived in Bangor two years, then settled in Atkinson, where they now reside. In the fall of 1861, when men were receiving no

bounty, and while recruitiu;:^ (^as the most difficult, he took out recruiting papers for the 14th Regiment of Mame Vohinteers ; and notwithstanding he had only 28 days in which to raise a company, greatly to the surprise of the •Governor, and Adjutant Gen- eral, he went into camp with 65 men, that passed the mustering officer, and was the first company of the 14th Regiment organized, while the most of the other officers had been at work three months. He was in five engagements ; the first was at Baton Rouge, La., August 5, 1862; the last at Port Hudson, La., May 27, I860, in which he received a wound in his left shoulder and chest (supposed at the time to be mortal), from which he has ever since been a s\ifl[erer. He was acting in the capacity of major at the time, and had been for more than three months. He was with his regiment every time it was uiider fire, until he was wounded, and always in all engagements had command of the skirmish line, He was an efficient officer, and his promotion would have been certain, had not his wound obliged him to close his services in the army. He was one of the selectmen of the town of Atkinson, for the years '73, '75 and '76. He has a good farm, and is a model farmer.
