CLASS HISTORY

We were freshmen and a bit hesitant realiz- ing the long road that lay ahead of us as we entered Oceana High School in the fall of "50. Hearing bells ring every 55 minutes, having lockers of our own, making new friends and meeting our faculty presented different and interesting experiences during our freshman year of high school.

We were very proud of Anita Myers who was our princess in the Ocean bowl festivities. Many of us took part in the extra-curricular activities and by the close of the year we felt very much a part of high school life.

A brief and joyful summer intermission

passed quickly as we eagerly watched the muddy 600 block of 25th street grow into the beautiful, modern building, which was to be our permanent Alma Mater, Virginia Beach High School.

With more self-confidence and poise we stepped into our new high school as Sopho- mores. Our class president that year was Ker- mit Scarborough. Mr. Miller and Mrs. Hud- gins were our sponsors. As there was no sen- ior class we, as sophomores, received a few- junior privileges. We helped organize the S. A. A. and S. C. A. with some of our class- mates filling major offices. The privilege of becoming Beta Club members was also given

US that year. The first Ring Dance which we gave for the Juniors concluded our activities that sophomore year.

The real display of class personality and talents prevailed the following school semester. A Junior- Senior Prom had to be financed, and as Juniors, we kept this headache no secret. We were going to make the first prom of V. B. H. S. the best.

The Class started the ball rolling by selling cakes, candy, cookies, and old clothes until every Junior mom in town had batter running out of her ears and perhaps hats or stockings missing.

Still short of its financial goal, the Class gave a Pajama Party at the Martha Washington Hotel. All the girls paid $1.50 for their room while the boys crooned from the ground. No doubt the occupants threw old shoes and coats to quiet them. (This was the source of the merchandise for the Class rummage sales!)

An "April in Paris Dance" and a "Krazy Kat" Dance were given to help raise money and proved very successful. The beautiful mu- rals of the Paris scenes and the huge Krazy Kats were printed by Gail Bayless. We wish to express our appreciation to Gail, who was caught in the sunshine rush of "53" to Florida, and is no longer with us.

The efforts of the Class were rewarding. Early in May the prom was given at Pine Tree Inn. The theme was "A Pot of Gold at

the End of the Rainbow." All enjoyed steak dinners, entertainment, and danced, danced and danced!

What is it like to be a senior? That was the class question. The climax of a school career is indescribable. Saying that it is just plain wonderful is all that can be amply said.

Skipping afternoon home-room legally top- ped the day with a whoopee! Note; The Class will never forget the teachers for their under- standing attitudes. The Annual, college exams, newspapers and other diversions kept the Class busy.

Again the Class was faced with a problem, how to leave a gift to the school. This, too, involved money, so plans began to shape up for a second annual variety show, known as the "Blackouts." They were directed by Cis Maulsby, Noel Duncan, Jane Sullivan, and Jobil Lassiter.

The remaining weeks of our Senior year were like a tumbleweed caught in the wind. These weeks were spent in "charm" classes, practicing how to walk properly for graduation day.

Yes, that memorable night did arrive. The diplomas were given to each proud senior.

Now as the class of 1955 looks to V.B.H.S., an immortal monument to education, a prayer flows from its many lips united for the last time. "God give to each a promising future like the glorious past."

CLASS PROPHECY OF 1955

June 14, 1^)63: Dear Diary,

At long last I arrived in New York City. Many of my friends have become so famous I thought maybe I'd be able to see some of them.

Here comes Jane Sullivan. She is the Num- ber I play-girl of the nation. She sure is spend- ing a lot of money I guess she's still borrow- ing it as usual. Jane tells me she is on her way to a Broadway show. I think I'll go too.

Just guess who the stars were our old pals, Jane Kellam and Ted Wool. I've never laughed as hard in my life but then, they always were a couple of real gone characters.

Looking at a billboard I see there is to be a basketball game in the fabulous new Ath- letic Club designed by Bill Meachum. Bill and Maxine are married now but they live in Arabia operating a branch of Mrs. Moore's Bakery.

Here comes the favorite team. Listen to that crowd! Why, they're yelling for Don Moss. He certainly has made a name for him- self, averaging 150 points a game. Though Don is well on his way to immortality, his wife the former Myrnie Woodward, has al- ready made herself a name. Myrnie is playinj with the New York Yankees and hit 72 home runs last year.

After the game Don told me that Charles "Killer" Hooper, is ready for a match with Champion Heavyweight Wrestler. Micky Mc- Cully. Poor Micky, I'd hate to see him after the match.

1 think I'll take in a T-V show. Maybe Jim Hague's Martini at Midnight will be good. It has been a long time since I've seen Jim and before the show he told me of some of his guest stars. Tonight for the first time on a coast-to-coast network, the world renowned act of Duncan's Donkeys is to perform. Noel always did like animals.

There were many other acts but my favorites were the African Jungle Boys. They played the best jazz, with Horst Flora on the sax, Kermit Scarborough on drums, and Kavo

Barco at the piano. But Fred Barih and Cis Maulshy doing typical jungle dances really gave it a new twist.

As I left the show I saw three familiar faces begging money for Canaries with Laryngitis. Katnrine Blake, Jo Shellman. and Sue Sergent were making quite a kill.

Speaking of money, Jack Maclver, Herve Ouellette, and Emanuel Katsias are doing very well for themselves. They are top authorities on men's wear and are always in style. The proper dress of the day appears to be black pants and shirts, pink sweaters and socks, and those charming razor backs. So, those three cats are sure to be the best dressed in the world.

Zooooooooom! There he goes again. It's that crazy jet pilot. Bill Hall, seeing how close he can come to the lovely ballerina. Rose Marie Price. Rosie is the Toast of France and her lover. Bill, flies her back and forth from her performances.

There are really more strange things in this city! Just look at that crowd! They're having a Bubble Blower Contest . . . Well, it just happened! Nancy Cathey just lost the title of Best Blower of the Year to Ruth Beebe. Good ole' Ruth always was full of hot air!

Oh, here are the results of some more con- tests. Nick Nelms has just won the title of Mr. Universe. Man, he moves me the most. And here are the Miss America contest re- sults. Well, well, Anita Myers is the new queen of beauty. I don't suppose the fact that George Sanderlin was the judge had anythinj to do with her victory, do you?

What on earth is this? A parade? Oh, yes. World Foreign Relations Ambassador, Jobil Lassiter, has just returned from Japan, where she has done a great job of negotiating peace. They're really giving her a lot of attention. The top press photographer. Daniel Proulx, hasn't given her a minute to herself, and even the Naval Academy is here under the command of Admiral Jerry Shields. Guess I'll have a talk with "Dum Dum," she always knows what everyone is doing, maybe she is still in touch with some of the crew.

She tells me that in her travels she often sees Paul Holland, who now delivers every

CLASS PROPHECY OF 1955

paper in the world in his little Jet-mohile.

Anita Cruscr and Virginia Humphries have opened a Knitting Shop in the deep, dark African Jungle. They say the natives learn very fast.

Seems as though everyone has taken a lik- ing to jungles because Judy Taylor is now chief interior decorator for the grass huts of the Watuze Tribe, of which Kitty Fink is the white goddess.

David Chrisman and Courtney Murphy are doing fine jobs as missionaries in Lower Sla- vogia.

After leaving Jobil, 1 ducked down a side street to avoid the crowd and saw a little shooting gallery called "Bill & Bill's." Out of curiosity 1 looked in and it was Bill Simpson and Bill Barton. That really was a crazy joint, they had pictures of all their high school tea- chers as targets.

Then I heard sirens, and the whole New York Fire Department, under Chief Bill Sim- mons, was off to a big fire. I hopped into Marcia Abernathy's combination space ship and taxi and we took off like a bat out a'! When we were almost there a motorcycle cop, Saul Jacobs, tried to catch us but was soon left in a cloud of cosmic dust. The fire turned

out to be in Lena Hutsenpiller's greenhouse. She is growing the most beautiful cactus and JoAnn Johnson is her head cactus doctor, making sure all the stickers are as sharp as possible. I don't guess too much damage was done so Abernathy and I headed back to the city. On the way we stopped to give JoAnn Ferrell a ride. She is Chief Cotton Picker for the Johnson & Johnson Company. She told us that she often came in contact with Lucy Rae Ward. Seems that Lucy is one of the best cot- ton testers the J. & J. Company has. They say that her cotton is the softest they sell.

It was a wonderful weekend. Time to catch my plane back to the West coast came only too soon. I had to get home before my hus- band. Oh, yes, I am refering to that famous pianist, Roberte Greenvicov. He just played a command performance for the King of Eng- land and was just voted "Ivory Tickler of the Year."

Don't forget to read my column for all the latest in gossip.

In the spring of 1954 it became evident that the time was at hand to compose an Alma Mater song for our school so that it could be used at our first graduation. We could scarcely aspire to a completely original melody, but we did want to get away from plagiarism. With the help of Captain A. P. Randolph, the father of one of the members of the first graduating class. Mr. Miller, our musical director, composed a two verse song with a well established tune which was changed considerably. It is hoped that all students past, present and future, will learn and remember our Alma Mater.

The annual staff working hard from October 'till March, was able to complete the layout and send it to press by March 15.

The salesmen directed by our able business man- ager have been working constantly. Their accomplish- ments meant the publication of our Annual. Our gratitude to them can not be expressed in words, but will be derived from having an annual in which they played an essential part.

Only those of the staff can realize the hours and hours of work put into this book. Without our spon- sor. Miss Martha Wilson, we could never have under- taken or completed it. We wish to express our sincere appreciation to her and say, "Thanks for everything."

Now, finally it is finished! We hope you, of the student body and faculty will enjoy the annual as much as we have enjoyed compiling it. It's success depends upon your gratification.

The Student Cooperative Association presi- dent and officers have worked long and hard to accomplish some of their objectives. They are: starting an Honor Club, promoting better teacher-student rehitions, promoting good sportsmanship for both players and spectators, sponsoring the Beach Bowl Ciaine and Parade, being in charge of assembly programs and having a clean up program for the school.

Mr. Johnson and the Faculty have given much support in starting our school's Honor Club which has been very successful this year. The school S. C. A. is active not only in the

school, but attends Tri-C and District meet- ings. Every year three representatives and the sponsor attend the State S.C.A. Convention. The convention, this year, at Harrisonburg, Virginia, will be on March 17th and ISth. We hope that we have benefited our school in some way and we feel that we have tried to accomplish all of our objectives.

It is the belief of our sponsor that we need to remember one thing for the present and the future. I Would Be True to all I attempt to do and to try to accomplish in life.

In order to do this we feel that we should have the following poem printed in this year- book so that wc may always have it near us. In conelusion this is what we leave to you

I WOULD BE TRUE

By Joseph Peek

I would be true, for there are those that trust

me: I would be pure, for there are those who care; I would be strong, for there is much to suffer; 1 would be brave, for there is much to dare.

I would be friend of all the foe, the friendless; I would be giving, and forget the gift; I would be humble, for I know my weakness. I would look up, and laugh, and love, and lift.

I would be prayerful thro" each busy moment; I would be constantly in touch with God; 1 would be tuned to hear the slightest whisper; 1 would have faith to keep the path Christ trod.

The Library Club of Virginia Beach High School is composed of twenty-seven students who are interested in talking care of the library and learning its functions.

The aims of the club are to promote good reading habits, to introduce good books to the student body, and to help the students find reading and reference material.

Acting as assistant librarians, the club mem- bers work at the circulation desk. They also perform other duties such as reading shelves, checking on overdue books, and making bul- letin board displays.

Since audio-visual aids are a part of the library, one project of the club is to become familiar with the film and slide projectors, the tape recorder, the record player, and other equipment. Thus the members can be of fur- ther service by operating these machines for the various classes in school.

The library is the center for research and the assistants are trained in finding material. This ability is an asset in their own work, and they are also able to guide other students in locating material available in the library.

The Beta Club, recognizing juniors and seniors having a "B" average, was formed at our school in 1952. The club starting with only sixteen members, has grown tremend- ously; it now has thirty-five members.

The club's motto is "Let us lead by serving others." It is our goal to promote leadership, character, and ability.

Our club sponsored many projects this year; those for service and those for money making purposes. However, our main project was to raise money for the State Convention which

was held in Roanoke, March 1 1 and 12.

The Beta Club sponsored the Who's Who Club for all students maintaining a "B" aver- age during a six weeks period. Parties, movies, etc. were given to the Who's Who Club as entertainment, to try to get the students to work harder and make better grades.

.Although our club is one of the youngest in the state, we have participated actively in the State's Beta duties and have developed into a full grown club.

Consisting of a group of twenty-nine mem- bers, this club is one of the most active in the school. The primary purpose of the club is to raise funds to buy monogram jackets. Those jackets are awarded to boys who earn them by making a letter in their last two years in one particular varsity sport. To help pay for these

jackets, two major fund raisers were put into successful operation. Because of the eager enthusiasm of all members, the dances held after football games and by selling soft drinks and popcorn during the home basketball games, our goal was accomplished.

The \'irginia Beach High School Chorus, under the direction of Mr. J. William Miller, is a well known and very active organization around the school and city.

This year our members, coming from all grades of high school, total seventy-six.

We started rehearsals in September prepar- ing a program for our special chorus assemble and a Lions club tea. Our ne.xt project was the presentation of the annual Christmas concert. This program with its candle light and beauti-

ful scenery was most effective. We also sang Christmas music for the service men at Fort Story and the Virginia Beach Hospital in De- cember. In January a small group sang at the home of Mrs. Van Buskirk for the Vir- ginia Beach Music Club tea. In February the chorus sang for the Religious Brotherhood meeting and in March, sang a selection over the Radio. April 22, we sang at the Kecough- tan Hospital. Our last performance of this year was at the Graduation exercises, June 9, 1955.

A glimpse into the art room during club period reveals groups of students busily work- ing on different creative projects according to their interests and abilities. During a typical club meeting, some members may be painting, others may be glazing ceramic figurines for firing in the kiln, a large group may be work- ing on linoleum block prints, cutting and printing monograms and designs, designs are being burned into wood by still other students, and someone might be loading the kiln for firing. In this way the members have a chance to discover and express their artistic abilities

which is the main purpose of the Art Club.

Another important purpose is to give the members a chance to work on group projects which will benefit the whole school. Some of these projects were the decorations for dances, Christmas decorations for the cafeteria and signs with blessings for the cafeteria tables. The float entered in the Beach Bowl parade pleased all the members by winning third prize for the most "unusual" float. The Art Club has also helped to publicize school events and activities by making posters and signs.

THE LATIN CLUB

The purpose of the Latin Club is to pro- mote a further interest in the study of not only the language, but also the Roman civilization.

Projects this year have been a report from each member on some phase of Roman life. We have had several Latin spelling bees and a few translations.

Through stories, myths, reports, and dis- cussions we have learned much of the ancient Romans including the fact that the Roman civilization at its heighth was just as high, if not higher than our own.

As hard as it may seem to believe, we learned that they had plastic surgery, brain surgery, and medical instruments that we did

not develop until this century.

Two members of this club. Joyce Beasley and Roger Keenoy, have distinguished them- selves in the National Latin Examinations by winning medals for their high proficiency. Roger won a medal both his first and second year. Joyce won her medal her first year. It is a policy of the Association for the Promo- tion of the Study of Latin to award a trophy to the school winning three medals in one year or in consecutive years. We are very proud of our trophy which may be seen in the trophy case.

The Latin students will take part in another National Latin Examination on the 31st of March. We hope they do as well in the future as Joyce and Roger have done.

"Eenter the Hero," a one-act comedy by Theresa Helburn. was selected for the District Play Festival which was held in the Virginia Beach High School auditorium in March. The characters were: Ruth Carey, played by

Brenda Lovitt, Anne Carey, by Terry McKee, Mrs. Carey, by Faye Salmon, and Harold Lawson, played by Jim Hague.

The purpose of the Play Festival is to moti- vate the development of a broad school dra- matic program. In 1954 our club earned a "Distinguished" rating in the District Festival and was invited to participate in the State Festival held at the University of Virginia.

Our high school paper, "The Beachcomber," was sponsored by the Journalism Class. Offi- cers of this year's paper were members of this newly-formed class.

The purpose of the school paper was to serve as an educator, as an entertainer, as a proiTioter of community spirit and as a guard- ian of the students' rights. The paper was pub- lished six times during the year, each edition

being six or eight pages. Virginia Beach Sun News was the printer for these editions.

To publish a newspaper is a tremendous task and much experience in the field of writing was gained through such a struggle. The staff of the "Beachcomber"" selected as their motto the following: "A Nose for News Is Essential.'"
