And this performance captures the pure funk, fun and improvisatory magic that was Little Feat with Lowell George at the helm. This radio studio recording is smack dab in the middle of what many consider their peak period, in between the albums Dixie Chicken (1973) and Feats Don't Fail Me Now (1974). This performance is simply stunning - words fail to describe - except maybe to say this music could heal the sick, lame and blind. At times, the playing is so spot on technically perfect. you forget that it's not a studio recording. Only the applause from a lucky small studio audience reminds you that it's live. They bust out of the gate with 3 hot ones, Two Trains is especially good. The Fan, here not quite as long as later 77-78 versions, is no less perfect - not to mention a smokin jam section!! On Your Way Down is slow enough to get the right groove, and then Spanish Moon is pure New Orleans funk - amazing how much Lowell sounds like Dr. John on this one. Oh Atlanta - a real Feat signature piece - and this one really has teeth. Willin is like warm honey melting in your mourth, and proves that the Feat could play as well "unplugged" live as full tilt electric boogie. They sound a lot like The Band on this one, no? Oh but here comes the best part - the 3 songs that were missing from my previous bootleg copy!! Thanks to whomever made this complete version available. Cold Cold Cold is delivered with extra HOT sauce, it's just slammin!! And Dixie Chicken shows off the piano pyrotechnics of Bill Payne. This one's shorter than the "Waiting for Columbus" version, and without any horns - but still absolutely jaw dropping at how tight the band is, and how creative they can be with the backbeat. If you're not up and dancing by now - check your batteries. Lowell's solo is masterful. And Tripe Face Boogie just blazes like a comet, with more fine keyboard by Payne, with screaming slide by Lowell. I'm a big Stones fan, and I hate to admit it, but by 1974 - and the Doctor saw both groups live during this period - Little Feat was blowing the Rolling Stones away. During this 73-77 period, in my opinion, Little Feat WAS the best rock and roll band in America, even beating out the Dead at pure excitement and dancable jams, delivered with power and tightly executed. This is a real gem from that period and a must for Feat fans, esp. if you had the incomplete "Chinese Bejeezus" before, which was incorrectly dated 9/14/74. Sound quality is very clean, other than the usual analog hiss. Other than the 1973 Ebbett's Field show, this is one of the few good SBD's from the early days of Feat. Highly recommended!! I found myself grooving in my seat at my desk and getting goosebumps about every 30 seconds. One of the greatest bands of all time.. they don't get enough recognition, but it's shows like this that prove they are. Little Feat has one of the greatest rhythm sections ever. The sound quality is great and the performance is outstanding! Check out The Fan, Fat Man In The Bath Tub or Spanish Moon at least. Why Little Feat isn't in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame is a mystery to me. They induct people like John Mellencamp, The Ventures and The Dave Clark Five this year, and still no Little Feat?
