CLASSES

Led by David Winthrop, president; Charisse Frazier, vice-president; Cheryl Richards, secretary; Rob Brandt, treasurer (second semester); Andrea Helecker, treasurer (first semester); and Mr. EUrie Von Schopp and Mrs. Doreen Forlow, advisors; the Class of 1982 had a busy final year. Starting with a third place finish in the float competition at Homecoming to graduation under overcast skies, the seniors kept busy.

At the start of their final year the class treasury was at a low point and money was needed if the seniors were to have their traditional dance. With some outside advice and help from a substitute teacher the class sold over 250 Liberty Lion hats. Selling candy and mums helped the class put more bucks away and a highly successful Homecoming Dance swelled the treasury even more.

With a theme of ' Sweet Dreams" the Senior Ball was held in an unusual location. For the first time, the Turf Club at Golden Gate Field was utilized by a Liberty graduating class for the Senior Ball. With good food, a DJ and a band, the seniors enjoyed the evening and everyone talked about how nice it was.

Walking back through the other three years for the Class of '82 we find them as freshmen with Ruben Garcia, president; Kathy deFremery, secretary; Brent Cannon, vice-president; Julie Winthrop, treasurer; and advisors Mr. Bob Baclig and Mrs. Sue Anderson. They sponsored a Valentine Dance and sold candy this first year to raise money.

As sophomores, they elected all girl officers with Chris Boardman, president; Angle Gallegos, vice-president; Kathy deFremery, secretary; Janine Ornelas, treasurer; with Mrs. Barbara Brown as a new advisor with Mr. Baclig. They placed third in the float competition and joining with the Class of '81 sponsored the Soph Hop/Junior Prom and elected Kathy deFremery and Luis Diaz gueen and king respectfully.

Sandy Secrest, president; Julie Winthrop, vice-president; Margarita Martinez, secretary; Andrea Helecker, treasurer; were the officers for the Class of '82 in their junior year. Mr. Schopp and Mrs. Forlow became new advisors committed to the idea that they would be with the class as advisors through graduation. The class sold pom- poms and M&M'S and sponsored the Sadie Hawkins turnabout dance to raise money. They captured second place in the float competition during the Homecoming Parade.

The Class of 1982 was guided by Terry Glenn, president; Alana Roderick, vice-president; Diane Kruger, secretary; Yvonne Branscum, treasurer; and Mrs. Jeannie Glenn and Mr. Jerry Black, advisors. The juniors had several successful candy sales and won second place in the float competition at Homecoming as well as winning the Spirit Trophy. They also sold balloons at football games to raise money.

Led by second time president, Aimee Vasta, the Sophomore Class had a very successful year. For fund raisers the class sold 200 cases of candy, almost 250 flowers on Homecoming Day, hosted several bake raffles at basketball games, sponsored the Sadie Hawkins Dance and held a car wash. Assisted by Manette Joksch, vice-president; Lisa deFremery, secretary; Shelly St. John, treasurer; and advisors, Mr. Bill Batze and Mrs. Sue Churchill (replaced Mrs. lean Noble in November); the sophomores won the Homecoming float competition for the second straight year.

In the spring, the classes of '83 and '84 co-sponsored the highly successful Soph Hop/Junior Prom where Mike Miller and Shelly St. John were crowned king and gueen.

Starting their first year at Liberty the Class of 1985 were led by Patrick Grimes, president; Kina Gray, vice- president; Carla Lorenzetti, secretary; Gina Andronica, treasurer; and advisors, Mrs. Chris Weber and Mr. Bruce Campion. The class had a candy sale and car wash to help raise money.

Walk With Us Through

With the announcement of the Yearbook Award for the outstanding senior male and female athletes of the year, the sports picture had come full cycle again. , /w . /^. lu Aytr\r^r.^

Clint Colhurn had an outstanding year both in football (receiver) and track (Meet of Champions on the 440yard relay team) and was announced as male athlete at the Awards Assembly on June 6 , , > , ,

Finishing a fantastic four-year sports involvement, three-sport athlete. Holly Mikkelsen was selected as female athlete of the year. Holly excelled in volleyball, basketball and softball and broke the single gamescormg record m basketball as a senior. Combining physical attributes with an outstanding personality and drive. Holly was truly one of the finest female athletes to graduate from Liberty. , . , , . ,1, , ^ Kj^r-th

North Coast was the key word as teams from wrestling, basketball and softball earned spots on the coveted North Coast Tournament schedule. Two wrestlers, Mario Ochoa and Anthony Orozco, earned second place finishes m the league meet and a trip to North Coast. After finishing a disappointing second in league the boys basketball team was awarded an "at-large" berth to North Coast where they were 1-1, losing to eventual State Champions Drake.

The varsity softball team had a ragged start but came on to win 14 straight league games, the championship and a trip to North Coast where they won their first contest only to fall in the second one the next day. Coached by Jerry Miller and John Pitau, the girls mowed down the opposition with monotonous regularity.

But it was with outstanding regularity that helped the girls junior varsity basketball and softball teams earn tremendous records and championships. Both teams did not not lose a single league garne. Coached by Laura Hamilton, the jv girls basketball team enjoyed a perfect league record on their way to their championship_But it was in jv softball thai perfection came to surface as Coach Rich Barrios guided the tearn to a 19-0 season. They never

Coached by Athletic Director, Roy Ghiggeri, the boys had a good season but needed a victory m their final home game (and final game of the season) to share the co-championship. The game became a runaway as the other team outscored and led the Lions early and all of the first half In one of the greatest comebacks of all time, the jv. s kept their cool and inched their way to victory. How sweet it was when the final buzzer sounded and the coach and team errupted as they had pulled off a tremendous victory and co-championship.

Although the varsity baseball team struggled most of the season they did come up with another championship Led by Coach Jerry Black, the Lions were able to keep their composure in a ram-delayed Alhambra taster Tournament and win the championship game for the second straight year (three in the last four V^f^^-^

And the varsity volleyball team, coached by Mr^. Sue Churchill, shared the league championships with Acalanes. They were led by most valuable player Shannon Thomas and Captain Holly Mikkelsen. . ..^ n.r^n

Kenny Norris and Rickie Fisher vied for the number one spot on the golf team (with Norris winning) while Daren

Moore was the number one man on the tennis team. ^, , „,,, ^ o j =^

Climaxing the sports year was the announcement of David Carver as the Scholar-Athlete. David was an

outstanding trackster and enjoyed a fine average in the classroom. The award is presented annually by the

Brentwood Lion's Club. , , ,^, /^o ^ i t ■u^r.t^

Homecoming was the highlight of the year while the Barn Dance was the most popular activity lor fall semester. But it was the Soph Hop/Junior Prom that saw beauty in the students.

CURRICUL UM

There was change in the air with Liberty's curriculum. With the creation of a new management position of Director of Curriculum and the hiring of Ms. Marcile Wright, the curriculum came under observation and change.

Staff members learned that "cycle" became a new by-word as each department would be looked at as to needs and improvement needed.

This year the Art and Language Arts Departments were on cycle and spent numerous hours scrutinizing their classes and programs to see who, what, when, where, why and how the needs of the students would be best met.

Two new department chairpersons were named. Replacing Mr Gerald Crawford in math was Miss Carolyn McNabb while Mr. Bill Batze took over in social studies for retiring Mr. Pete Springer.

New faces to Liberty as teachers were Mrs. Bea Weborg in English and Gary Wilson in Industrial Arts. Mr. Mike Schrader became the new dean while both Mr. Art Gonzales and Mr. Rob Russel returned from leave. In the classified area, Evie McCord replaced Denise Zeiwas as duplicating operator; Loran Vetter was named as Title I Aide and two people were hired for yard supervisor, Carol Ernst and Carlene Colburn. In Adult Ed. Alta Murphy became Mr. Roy Ghiggeri's new secretary while Bev Wilson was hired as a secretary to Mr. Bill Snow for SIP.

There were a number of staff members who left Liberty during or at the end of the school year. They included Mr. Dale Cozby who retired and moved to Missouri; Mr. Vernon Noble and Miss Barbara Bonnickson, both of who retired; and Mr. Ted Ferenc, Mr. Ron Overton and Mrs. Sue Ch urchill who moved on to other areas or occupations.

Keeping busy with numerous planning meetings, Mr. Snow guided the SIP program through its second year as change continued to take place on campus.

In Language Arts, Mr. Dick Hackett, Mr. Russell, Mrs. Eunice Campbell and Mr. RoUo Lewis held a writing workshop for parents to help them better understand what their children were doing in English. UNDERCUR- RENTS, containing literary efforts by many students was published and sold while Mr. Russell's English classes set up magazines for each class.

The Art Department, in addition to curriculum review, had students paint a mural in the gym and decorate windows of Brentwood merchants at Christmas time.

Because of a curriculum change for the Class of 1985, Mrs. Norma Riccobouno, Mr. Snow and Mr. Batze spent countless hours working on a new course. World History, that will be implemented in the fall

In the spring the Board of Trustees announced a major revision in the administrative make-up of the school. The dean and assistant principal positions were eliminated. Added were two vice-principals, a head counselor and a combined Athletic Director and Director of Student Activities positions.

Thank You' To Those That Help

ASSISTANT EDITOR, Kim Betz. mugs one for the yearbook photog- rapher at the Barn Dance.

YEARBOOK ADVISOR, Bill Batze, chats with Mrs. Sue Churchill on Homecoming Day.

ANN SCHENDEL heads over to Baize's room lor annual stall work dunng Homecoming.

I owe a lot of Thanks to a lot of people. To the counseling office for all the times we needed something, to Mrs. Billie Casey and Mrs. Billie Fortner for all the questions answered, to Evie McCord for the use of her machines, to the custodians for cleaning up our "little" messes, to all the teachers who allowed students out of class, and a special thanks to Mr. Bill Snow for not being upset about all the times I was late to first period.

I wish next year's staff a lot of good luck; especially next year's editor-in-chief, Kim Betz, and the two assistant editors Melissa Batze and Chris Brown.

A special note of thanks goes to our "new" yearbook pho- tographer Don Barros. He did an excellent job replacing Hal Matson and learning our needs and then helping fulfill them. 1 hope the '83 staff works well with him.

MR. BfLL BATZE is owed one huge "Thank you" for put- ting up with me and all my staffers and all the little stunts we pulled which included hanging, hiding, and throwing Gar- field in the garbage can.

Sincerely, Donna Price Editor-in -chief

EDITOR ol the LION '82 yearbook. Donna Price smiles at the Barn Dance.

Advisor

"HELLO WORLD!" John Scruggs provided some good photography and even better hu- mor to keep things relaxed.

MARY THOMAS looks up with a startled expression as Chris Brown talks with the advisor.

RANDY ALLEN an excellent annual stall photograph, kicks back.

This years staff was basically a ' 'greenhorn " group. All of the members were either first year or second year members, even the editor and assistant editor had only been on staff two years.

We started out with a large group who chose the blue cover and the tip-on with the theme "Walk With Us Through ... " This year we did carry the theme out from the title page to the closing.

Because of a lack of money, our staff was forced to put the seniors in black and white and we went with a stock cover and end sheets.

Our group dwindled down to just a handful who finished up the book. Most of the staff were a dedicated group. Aside from the teasing and throwing everything insight including Garfield, we worked hard on the yearbook.

203

Dedicated To

^

It IS not the normal practice for the LION yearbook or any part olit to be dedicated. But it is not the usual thing lor an individual to dedicate 36 years ol his life to a single institution. So it is with great love and consideration that we, the ANNUAL STAFF OF LION '82, dedicate this page to an outstanding educator who has given us so much. We salute you Mr. Vernon C. Noble.
