LONDON, 1844. 1 i INTRODUCTION In preparing the present Catalogue, the principal object has been to give a complete list of all the specimens of Myria- poda contained in the collection of the British Museum, indi- cating, at the same time, the peculiarities of each, as regard age, sex, variety of colouring, condition, habitation, and the source from whence it has been derived. With this view, the different individuals of each species contained in the collection are indicated by the letters a, b, c, &c, following the name of the species and its synonymes. The habitat is given as particularly as the materials pos- sessed by the Museum permit. The specimens which have been presented to the Museum, have the name of the donor marked immediately after the habitat. The collection is arranged in conformity with a paper on the classification of these animals, lately read by Mr. Newport at the Linnean Society, which will appear in the forthcoming volume of the Transactions : and as the Museum collection has been the chief source from whence Mr. Newport has derived his materials, they may be regarded as the type-specimens of the species described in that paper, and in Mr. Newport's pa- per in the ' Annals of Natural History.' The collection also contains the type -specimens of the species described by Dr. Leach, in the 'Zoological Miscellany;' — of the North- VI INTRODUCTION. American species described by Mr. Thomas Say in the ' Trans- ) actions of the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia ; ' / also by myself, in Griffith's translation of Cinder's ' Animal / Kingdom.' To give some idea of the extent of the collection, I may state that M. Brandt, in his Memoirs in the ' Bulletin de l'Academie Imperialedes Sciences de St. Petersbourg,' the last general work on the subject, indicates 16 ascertained and 9 doubtful species of Chilopoda, and 117 ascertained and 16 doubtful species of Ch'riognatha : the Museum collection con- tains 94 species of the former and 75 of the latter order, the majority of which appear to have been unknown to that author.
