Sire of the dams of Prospero, 2:20, Elaine, 2:ao, St. Juliea^ 2:iiji4, and fifteen others in the 2:30 list. JVote. — Electrotype is^a rich blood bay colt, iSj{ hands high, weighing about 1,100 pounds, and is exceedingly handsome, muscular and finely finished. Has a clean, bony head, broad between the eyes, good length of neck, short, strong back, very powerful hips and quarters, and broad, clean, hard finished legs. Several horsemen have said that he is the best looking son of Electioneer they have seen. This colt is superbly bred in both blood and speed lines. On both paternal and ma- ternal sides he comes from the Haii^bletonian-Harry Clay combination, which has proved a great cross^ as shown in such sires as Electioneer, Victor Von Bismarck, Hambletonian Prince, etc. ; but his special claim on the attention of horsemen is that Addie, his dam, is a wonderful producer of ex- treme speed — she having produced Woodnut, 2:i6j^, Manon, 2:21 (trial in 2:\^yi), and Manette, trial 2:19^. Electrotype is not only by one of the greatest sires that ever lived, but is out of one of the greatest mares. Such a bred colt can not fail to prove a decided success in the stud. He is a bold, open-gaited horse and has shown a forty gait with but very little practice. We do not be- lie\? that so grandly bred and individually superior son of Electioneer can be bought elsewhere. Price, $ 1 5,00a (5) STALLIOMS AND COLTS. No. 3, PRINCE IMPERIAL. (Standard.) (Trial 8:20.) Bay stallion, foaled in 1 869. BY WILLIAM WELCH 341. Sire of Jeremiah, 2:22K, Violin, 2:2954:, and the dam of Persica, 2:28|^. William Welch is by Hambletonian 10; dam (the dam of Prince, 2:27). 1st dam Flora Temple, record 2:19^ . . by One-eyed Kentucky Hunter. 2d dam Madam Temple by Spotted Horse. Dam of Flora Temple, 2:19%, Pilot Temple, 2:245^, and Bland Temple (dam of Nora Temple, 2:27^, and Temple, 2:30). Note. Prince Imperial is a very handsome, blocky stallion, rather small, but of great muscular development, large, flat, broad legs and excellent style. He is a pure, natural gaited trotter of great speed. Mr. Bonner drove him over his track in 2:23%', and Johnny Murphy sent him a mile over Fleetwood in 2:20. He seems to be as fast as ever and is a charming roadster. Ladies have driven him. Prince is an old horse, but has more vigor, constitution and gamenessthan an average five-year-old. Promises to be useful for years to come. The blood of this horse should be pre- served. Being by a son of Hambletonian 10, out of that great campaigner. Flora Temple, 2:19^, he is a rarely bred one. Has been used as a road horse all his life, and only now and then covered a mare as a favor to owner's friends, nevertheless he has one in the 2:30 list. This horse would be a very desirable purchase to some gentleman having a few mares to breed, that could use him on the road most of the time. He would be a speculation to any one wishing to stand him and start in a few races. Has no record better than 2:40. Should earn his very low price twice over in one season. No. 4. WOODFORD PILOT 640. Dam of Daisy Burns, 2:295^, JVo^e. — Martyr is a large, growthy, powerful colt, with an excellent set of broad, clean, cordy legs. He will develop into a handsome, l6-hand horse. This cok is a trotter now, and is sure to become a race horse if no accident befalls him. His excellent breeding should make him a superior stock horse. His sire. Rumor, 2:24^, is a very highly-finished, elegant stallion, and is faster than his record; all his colts that we have seen show promise, and indicate that they will make a name for their sire. The dam of Martyr is by General Knox, a trotter and a sire of trotters from the fi-rst to the fourth generation. For the benefit of those who are not entirely familiar with the merit of General Knox and his descendants, M'e will state a few facts concerning them : General Knox had a record of 2:31^, and when sixteen yearsold trotted two mileheats in 2:24and 2:25^. Heisthesire of fourteen in the 2:30 list — of these three beat 2:20 — is also the sire of twenty with records ranging from 2:30 to 2:35, and twenty-one with records between 2:35 and 2:40. His daughters have pro- duced eleven trottters in the list, and eighteen of his sons have representatives in the 2:30 table; also many of his grandsons and granddaughters. General Knox was sixteen yearsold before he had access to a good class of mares. The Knoxes are a great family of natural trotters, and their blood is an exceedingly valuable element in a pedigree. Martyr's grandam was by Socrates, 2:34^, at four years old (son of Hambletonian 10, out of a Star mare), and hisgreat-grandam was a performer as well as a producer. This colt is a very valuable one for a trotter or a stock horse. Price, $1,000. STALLIONS AND COLTS, No. 38. CHRIS. (Standard.) Bay colt, foaled ApJ-il 5, I887. BY GAMBETTA 1172. But little need be said of his sire., one of the fast and well bred sons of George Wilkes, standing at $200, and has a full book. Wilrod's dam is by a superbly bred horse and one that has publicly shown himself fast, although never driven to a record. His second dam is by a producing son of the great Woodford Mambrino, 2:2i>^, and his third by a thoroughbred that has sired the dam of a 2:24^ trotter. This is a cheap Wilkes colt, and, if bought and waited on a reasonable time, will earn much wealth for his owner. Price, $500. No. 57. HAYWOOD. (Standard.) Chestnut colt, foaled in 1888. Louise produced a three-year-old that sold for $1,650 at auction, and has a yearling colt by Mambrino Dudley that is one of the most promising on our place. He is large, finely gaited and fast. She has been bred to Mambrino Dudley, 2:1935^, again and is believed to be with foal. Louise is bred to produce speed, being by the sire of Clingstone, 2:14, and other fast ones, and is out of a mare hy a brother of Volunteer, second dam the producer of a 2:24 trotter. Mambrino Patchen is by Mambrino Chief; dam Bhodes Mare (dam of Lady Thorne, 2:18>i), by Gano. I St dam Eliza. Dam of Molly Long, 2:33^, as a four-year-old. Nofe. — Eliza Long is a large, powerful mare, with heavy bone, deep, oblique shoulders, and ex- tra length. This is a splendid, roomy brood mare, standing about half an inch under 16 hands. She is the dam of Tristram, a large and handsome colt that showed a half-mile in i: 18 as a three- year-old, and is likely to make a record of 2:30, or better, this year. Eliza Long has a very prom- ising filly by Kentucky Wilkes and is now heavy in foal to Earl, 2:24^, son of Princeps, out of Juno by Hambletonian 10. The get of Earl are rapidly coming to the front— three of his two-year-olds showed miles in public ranging from 2:41 to 2:51 last season — and are bringing large prices. Eliza Long's produce by him should sell for more than the price of the mare. It would be an excellent investment to buy this mare and breed her to Kentucky Wilkes. Such a union would secure the coveted Wilkes-Mambrino Patchen combination. We do not think $600 could be better invested in a mare and stallion service-fee. Price, $500- 26 BROOD MARES AND FILLIES. This mare stands 16 hands high, is stylish and highly finished, with great substance and bone. She has never been broken to harness, but shows superior action in the field. Her breeding is very choice, being by that choicely-bred son of Almont, Abdallah Mambrino, sire of Geneva S., 2:i9X. and other good ones. Belle Almont's dam was by Clark Chief (a great sire of brood mares as well as trotters), and is the dam of H. B. Banning with a perfectly authentic trial of 2:26%, and a premium winner at St. Louis and other fairs. The second dam of this mare produced The Banker, 2:291^, and Harrison Chief, a horse that has shown great speed and taken more premiums, probably, than any other horse in Kentucky. Belle Almont produced a large, handsome colt in 1888, which showed exceptional speed for his age and sold for $500. She is now heavy in foal to Princeton and her produce by him should be worth the sum asked for the mare. Price, $1,200. No. 69. LILY. (Kecord, 2:41 J^.) Bay mare, foaled 1873. No/g. — Mysterious is a grand-looking mare, 16 hands high, of very speedy form, great substance and bone, without being at all coarse. She is good in every feature and has excellent action. Has been broken to harness but never handled for speed. Her sire, General Washington, is by a great producer, and out of one of the fastest and gamest mares that ever started in a race. General Wash- ington is fast himself (has show^n 2:24 gait), and is now in the hands of the leading trainer of Ken- tucky, for the purpose of making a low record this season. He has produced fast ones, and there is every reason to believe will largely increase his list in 1889. Socrates, the sire of Mysterious' dam, was one of the fastest four-year-olds out, at the time he acquired his record, and sold for $20,000 on account of his speed and elegant breeding. The second dam of Mysterious not only beat 2:30 but produced a son that is in the list, and he is producing speed. Mysterious is clearly in foal to Prince- ton, 2:19^, one of the very best-bred horses living. Her produce by this great stallion should, when a year old, bring more than is asked for her. Princeton, on his sire's side, comes from that fast, game and producing branch of the Mambrino Chief family represented by Woodford Mambrino, 2:21^. The latter great race horse and sire has many stars in his crown, chief of which are Princeps, Pancoast, 2:2i|^ (sire of Patron, 2:14^, Aquarius, 2:29 j^, at three years old), and Mambrino Dudley, 2:19^ (sire of Crescendo, a colt that can trot close to 2:20). Princeton as a Race Hors^e has made a brilliant showing. In his four-7ear-old form he did stud duty up to the middle of August, when he was taken up and put in training , his race at St. Louis in October was, on this accoun'., a most remarkable performance. Representatives of twe prominent Turf Journals thus refer to the race. The Chicago Horseman said : "The contest was for the Mississippi Stakes, for four-year old colts and fillies, $75.00 entrance, with $750 added. The starters besides Princeton were Reference, by Referee; Issaquena, by Pancoast ; Gambetta, by George Wilkes, and Alicia, by George Wilkes. Princeton won in s,traight heats ; time 2:26^, 2:25 and 2:23^. He was not pushed out in either heat, winning the first by an open length, the second by three lengths and in the third, to quote the report of the Globe- Democrat, ' Princeton slowed up at the finish and won by an open length. In this heat he trotted the middle half in 1:07^, the third quarter in 33^ seconds. Princeton can, without a doubt, trot a mile in 2:20.' The Horseman is always glad to note the meritorious performances of the youngsters, and in this case finds abundant cause for congratulation to the fortunate owner of Princeton, Mr. Buford, also to the owner of his sire, Princeps, Mr. Veech, of Louisville, Ky." The Kentucky Stock Farm said of Princeton: ''Taking into consideration his breeding on his dam's side with the blood of his sire, Princeps (sire of Trinket, 2:14), by Woodford Mambrino, 2:21 1^, out of a mare by Alexander's Abdallah (sire of Goldsmith Maid, 2:14), it may be said that Princeton is one of the best trotting stallions in the world. His performances last season (1884^ STALLIONS FOR SERVICE. 6f proved him the very best four-year-old out, as he trotted a third heat in 2:23^ at St. Louis, winning his race in three straight heats with great ease." In 1887, Princeton covered sixty-one mares, keeping busy in the stud, up to July 27lh, after which time he was jogged on the road and track, not being allowed to go faster than a forty gait in any of the short spurts permitted him. Early in August he was shipped to Terre Haute, and worked over that track four days, having one repeat in that time. He was then entered for a free- for-all race, his owner, Mr. Buford, believing that Princeton would not have to trot faster than about 2:30 to win, and that it would merely be easy work for him. In the first heat. Jack Hayden forced Princeton out in 2:24. Mr. Buford, by this time, realized he had a horse race on hisi hands, and greatly regretted having entered Princeton in his soft condition, but having gone this far, determined to win if possible. Princeton's driver was instructed to lay him up in the second heat, which he did; the third heat was won by Princeton in 2:25)^. In the fourth heat Princeton's com- petitor forced him to go to the three-quarter pole in 1:45 (a 2:20 gait), and then gave it up, allowing Princeton to jog in at his ease in 2:24. ,ft In our opinion, taking the circumstances intoOtinsideration, this was as great a race as Princeton ever won and proved him a game race horse. In October, as a six-year-old, Princeton won the stallion race at Lexington, in straight heats, the last being the fastest, time 2:19^. One of the most experienced and astute horsemen in the country has written Princeton's owner, that he knows of no young horse more likely to reach the stallion record. Priaceton's Personal Features, Colts, etc The individual merit of this stallion, in form, finish and action, is fully up to and in keeping with his high breeding and superiority as a race horse. A happy combination seldom found to the same degree among the best stallions of the land. Princeton stands 15^ hands high, is a,rich seal brown in color, with star and some white on hind pasterns. He is a strictly fine horse, smoothly turned, of extra muscular development, showing great power and the look of a horse of strong constitution, which he is known to possess. His action is rapid, with good length of stride, and his disposition level headed. He has an excellent set of legs, flat, clean and hard in finish. Weight, over 1,100 pounds. As an indication of Princeton's individual merit and that of his produce, we mention that he captured the Herd Premium for best stallion and four of his get at the Lexington, Ky., Fair, last fall. But one of Princeton's get had reached the age of three years in 1888. This is the filly, Prin- ceppa, that showed a quarter in 36 seconds, and was not regularly trained. Spray, a yearling (15X hands high), first had a bridle on her May 5th, and during the first week in September trotted a mile over the Lexington track in 2:58 — last half in 1:26 j^. There are others coming on that are just as fast for their age and handling. Altogether we have seen sixteen of Princeton's get and find that their sire stamps himself on his produce to a remarkable degree. They are, without exception, elegantly finished, substantial, and speedy in conformation 5 are fine and blood-like in ears, head and neck, deep and oblique in the shoulders, short in the back, smooth and strong in the coupling, and very extra in the development of their quarters. They have ample bone of the best character. AU save one, said to have been badly treated, are of fine size. Princeton is a particularly sure foal getter, and we have reason to think that fifty-eight out of the sixty-eight mares he covered in 1888 are with foal. PRINCETON STANDS AT $150, With privilege of return up to June I, 1890. Stallion fees are due at time of service. LOOK & SMITH. ©a STALLIONS FOR SERVICE. STALLIONS FOR SERVICE. He is a rich seal brown, with tan muzzle and flanks ; stands 15^ hands high, and, in usual flesh, weighs about 1,025 pounds. He has all the quality of an Arab, with the conformation of the highest type of the modern trotter. His head is small and fine, but broad between the eyes, which are very prominent, strong, clear and hazel in color. Ears medium size, erect, well pointed and lively. Neck clean cut in throttle, beautifully arched and well set on very oblique and deep shoulders, which run well back into a back that can not be excelled. Through the loins he is exceptionally deep, with smooth hips and very muscular quarters and thighs. His barrel is well rounded and arched out, and is closely ribbed back. Legs broad, flat, clean and cordy, with the best of hocks ; feet perfect in shape and texture ; mane and tail, extra fine, the latter beautifully carried. He is a horse of high courage, exceeding vitality, constitution and perfect temper. His action is bold, pure and frictionless, folding the knee well and open behind. Kentucky Wilkes comes up to the highest ideal of an elegant roadster, and has demonstrated his speed and gameness on many tracks throughout the East and West — winning a large number of hard fought races. His' pedigree speaks for itself, showing that in addition to the wonderful pre- potent combination of Hambletonian-Clay blood derived from his unrivaled sire, George Wilkes, he possesses for a dam one of the greatest brood mares, taking into consideraiion the reproducing power her progeny have shown. Not only has the dam ©f Kentucky Wilkes produced three that have shown their ability to beat 2:30, but three of her daughters are the dams or grandams of per- formers with records ranging from 2:18^ to 2:30. Back of this is a thoroughbred mare, who is the grandam of one in the list and four thoroughbred crosses behind her. STALLIONS FOR SERVICE. 63 THE PRODUCE OF KENTUCKY WILKES. The oldest of this stallion's produce are three years of age (foals of 1885). Only one of the moderate number foaled that year has been regularly trained, so far as we can learn. This is the filly, Virginia Evans, which obtained a record of 2:3 r, and distanced her field in a stake race in 2:33, over a half-mile track. She also showed her ability to beat 2:30 in another race in which she lapped out a horse in three heats, each of which was below that mark. This filly is a race mare and likely to gain a record well down in the twenties in 1889. Astoria, a two-year-old, obtained a record of 2:40^^, trotting the last half in l:i8^. Another two-year-old shows fully as much speed. A yearling, by Kentucky Wilkes, with less than five weeks' leading, trotted a quarer in 45 secorids, showed a forty gait, and sold for $2,500 cash. All of his produce are promising as trotters, and have the quality, finish and action of their sire. Most of them will exceed him in size. Several of his get can be seen at our farm. KENTUCKY WILKES STANDS AT $100, With privilege of return in 1890. Stallion fees are due at time of service. LOOK & SMITH. OMITTED FROM REGULAR CLASSIFICATION. Mam- brino Chief also sired twenty-two sons that have pro- duced trotters in 2:30 and under, and the dams of twenty horses with records from 2:17 to 2:30. 2d dam s. t. b by Bertrand. Pilot Mambrino is the best bred son of the great Pilot, Jr., sire of the dams of the fastest two trotters that ever lived. Unlike many of the sons of Pilot, Jr., he has a very even, kind temper, and is particularly steady and level headed. He is one of the truest gaited and highest couraged horses ever seen. We have secured this stallion believing he offers the best source from which to obtain the wonderful producing Pilot blood. Pilot Mambrino never had any opportunity as a sire until he was placed at Indian Hill. The following extract from a paragraph in the 1887 catalogue of Indian Hill Farm, referring to Pilot, Jr., blood, says: "The exceeding value of this strain is universally admitted, and the bulk of it, found at Indian Hill, is derived from the best bred son of Pilot, Jr., namely Pilot Mambrino. His dam was the great brood mare Indiana, by Mambrino Chief. She produced Indianapolis, 2:21, and other good ones. Pilot Mambrino obtained a record of 2:35 1^ in the mud, winning at his ease in straight heats. He trotted a trial over the Louisville Jockey Club track, in the presence of several 'reliable parties, in 2:26^. He is a horse of grand action, perfectly level head, unlimited gameness, and possesses the clean bone and excellent feet for which, with other important characteristics, the Pilot family are noted. His colts are natural trotters, have great substance, and the valuable features of their sire. They will make a reputation on the track and in the stud. When we consider how scarce the blood of Pilot, Jr., is, that he sired eight 2:30 horses and the dams of the fastest two that ever lived (Maud S., 2:oS^, and Jay-Eye-See, 2:10), as well as the dams of twenty-eight others with .'records in 2:30 and iaetter (including Nutwood, 2:18^, Mambrino Gift, 2:20, Noontide, 2:2o^, Naiad Queen, 2:20^, and Viking, ^ig^), the value of this blood, particularly as an out-cross, can hardly be estimated, for it has proven a happy hit with almost every other line of blood." Mr. Veech has said, in reference to five of the get of Pilot Mambrino, that he considered them equal to that number of the produce of any one stallion he had ever seen. Pilot Mambrino's get are valuable and command good prices. A pair of his colts is one of the best road teams in Chicago, and $3,000 has been refused for them ; the owner, of a three-year- old has declined to entertain an offer of $2,500 for him; a three-year-old filly by Pilot was sold for $800 and resold to New York parties at an advance. Pilot Mambrino is the sire of John Henry, record of 2:29^ over a half mile track in 1887. This horse is claimed to be much faster. Boston Pilot, 2:32, is by this stallion. Pilot Mambrino is a rich mahogany bay in color, is 15 hands Ij^ inches high, has great sub- stance and constitution, with the best legs and feet that could be desired. Although an old horse, he is exceedingly game, vigorous, and full of metal. He is very sure in the stud. Pilot Mambrino stands at $50, with privilege of return. Limited to twenty-five mares. Stallion fees are due at time of service. Mares not proving with foal can be returned next year (as indicated), provided stallions are- living. TERMS FOR KEEPING STOCK.
