Peace College — A First Class Experience
Academic excellence, spiritual growth, and long standing tradition are elements common to Peace College. At Peace, one finds colonial style buildings casting shadows over a spacious lawn, professors offering knowledge to curious minds, and young women stepping out on their own in search of answers to the future. Not only has Peace proven herself to be a sound institution of learning, she also offers spiritual nourishment in the form of weekly chapel services and a devout faculty and staff The values held by her students, the quality of her faculty and staff, and the unique formal lawn graduation all contribute to the traditions of Peace. Since 1857 she has stood tall and majestic in downtown Raleigh, offering herself to young women as a place to work, learn, and grow. Most Peace graduates agree that their two years spent at Peace are nothing less than a FIRST CLASS EXPERIENCE!

"Peace is such a distinct institution in so many ways. Vital to Peace's uniqueness is an environment that praises individual performance, and yet creates and secures a common, tangible bond recognizable among all Peace students. When I reflect upon my days here at Peace, I will remember that I was a part of a campus that fosters a tradition of academic, social, and personal achievement. I will always be aware of that tradition because it is now a permanent part of me.''
— Beth Freeman
"The faculty and staff are especially unique at Peace; professors act not only as teachers but also as friends and role models."
— Monika Florence
"Being here at Peace is like having the security and size of high school as well as the classes and freedom of college. What sets Peace apart is how friendly everyone is to each other. Someone made the comment that it is like one big sorority. I agree. "

'eace College Foreign Study Program In Cambridge, England
Cambridge Director, Dr. Jennifer Sheppard, and Campus Ad- linistrator. Dean Helen Ray, led 19 students this year on a three- eek trip to Cambridge, England. This Peace College Foreign I tudv Program offered distinguished students the opportunity to xperience British culture firsthand. These students learned bout the history of English architecture, theatre, and art through iteresting lectures at Cambridge University. Famous landmarks uch as Ely Cathedral, Shakespearean Theatre in Stratford-upon- ivon and Tate Gallery in London were admired on the tours. Free ime allowed the students to explore places such as Bath and iOndon, while catching glimpses of the lifestyles and completing xtensive souvenir shopping. Not every Peace College student /as eligible, however. A 2.8 GPA for the fall semester and a nomi- lation by a Peace College faculty member were required. Fur- hermore, two written Peace College faculty recommendations nd an application had to be turned in before acceptance could be lecided upon. However, the extensive preparations and months if waiting were worth it not only for the three hour credit hours ach student received but also for the new knowledge and fun that :ach student experienced.

BACCHUS
BACCHUS means Boost Alcohol Consciousness Concerning the Health of University Students. BACCHUS has several ongoing projects that promote alcohol awareness, such as the Don't Drink and Drive Campaigns promoted by Red Ribbon Week, the Peace Alcohol Aware- ness Week, the Road Race, plus assemblies and other activities. The group is interested in helping fellow students understand and acknowl- edge the danger in the use and abuse of alcohol. In the last two years BACCHUS has become a very successful organization.

Peace Tennis
The Peace College Tennis Team finished fourth at the 1991 NJCAA National Tournament in Tyler, Texas. They won the Pirate Invitation Team Tournament in 1991 as well. There were five players ranked in the singles pre-season and two doubles teams.
The team was undefeated in the fall season with a record of 6-0. The spring season will con- sist of more than twenty matches. The travelling team ventures to Texas, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Arizona, Virginia, and various areas of North Carolina.
The competition keeps the team busy, yet they pride themselves on being strong academ- ically as well as athletically. Four of the players are on academic as well as athletic scholarships. Coach Anne Frautschi builds her team's academ- ic reputation along with their performance on the court.
Team members include: Susannah Cobb, Car- oline Vinson, and Sara Webster; tri-captains: Keri Elgin, Daniela Marx, Camille Walter, and Lee Worrell. The team's coach is Anne Fraut- schi.

Physical Fitness At Peace
At Peace College students try to exercise both their minds and their bodies. Physical fitness was very important to Peace girls tin's year judging from the amount of people who used the weight room and the pool everyday. Most girls who worked out regularly did so for their own benefit and not for a Physical Edu- cation class.
What motivated students to exercise ranged from enjoyment to needing to lit into the size 6 dress for the Spring Dance. Some students even used exercise to relieve the stresses of studying and exams. The more popular methods of exercise included using the Stair Master, riding the stationary bike, jogging or walking around the gym and swimming. Still, whether it was basketball, aerobics, or weight lifting. Peace students en- joyed physical fitness.
Above: Peace girls can throw a perfect spiral Right: "Whew! Only twenty more minutes to so!"
Lett. Stretching out is a must for exercise.

Phi Theta
Kappa
Phi Theta Kappa is a national honor fraternity in junior colleges. The Peace College fraternity is a member of the Gamma Phi chapter. Inductions into Phi Theta Kappa are held annually for the second-semester freshman who achieves a 3.7 GPA during the first semester at Peace. A sopho- more must obtain a 3. 5 cumulative GPA. An offi- cial induction is held in the spring of each year. In order to remain a member, the student must maintain a 3. 3 cumulative GPA. Phi Theta Kappa sponsors tutoring services and the Brain Brawl.
Katherine Hudson and Rma Tanaka
Sigma Delta Mu is a National Honor Society in Spanish for the first two years of college. Peace's chapter, which was begun in the spring of 19S0, is the Beta Chapter of North Carolina. The Motto for Sigma Delta Mu is "Mas Alia" which means "beyond. " It is hoped that each member will take to heart these words and will move beyond her present knowledge to new realms of study and understanding — particularly of the Hispanic- world.

"Peace's academic environment demands education as the primary element of the collegiate atmosphere, making Peace a first class experience that I will always be thankful for."
Kelli Hopkins
"Coming to Peace from a small town high school. I needed the secure feeling of a mock family that I have received at Peace. I've made many life-long friends during these two short years. Being active in Student Government has made my two years very fulfilling. Also the closeness be- tween the students and the professors is a very important aspect at Peace. I feel comfortable coming to any of my professors and talking to them about academic problems as well as personal problems. All these things have made my two years at Peace a first class experience."
b
Kathy Manning
"Choosing to go to Peace College has been the best decision I have made thus far in my life. I am thankful for the support the faculty has lent and the friendships I've made. I will al- ways look back fondly on my Peace Days.

" 'Good character is more to be praised than outstanding tal- ent. Most talents are, to some extent, a gift. Good character, by contrast, is not given to us. We have built it piece by piece — by thought, choice, courage, and determination.' John Luther. Peace has alloived me to grow academically , spiritu- ally, and in character. This is what makes Peace College a First Class Experience.
Noelle Nowak
"Peace College . . . Definitely two of the fastest years of my life. I am thankful to God that this has been a part of his plan for me. Peace has a quality of teaching in a unique way. I've learned an incredible amount from books, professors, friends, mistakes, conversations, watching and attempting. Peace is a well-rounded institution and is a good foundation for the process of creating well-rounded students. In a few phrases. Peace has taught me this: Your best teacher is time; your best preacher is the heart; your best book is the world, and your best friend is God.
Stacey Phillips
"During the time that I have spent here at Peace, 1 have had the opportunity to become a more in- dividual and independent person by participa- ting in the activities Peace has to offer. Above all. Peace is a first class experience because of the many heart-felt moments with new friends, teachers, and special occasions.''
Outstanding Sophomores
Teresa Jo Webster
"Teddy Roosevelt said, 'Life is a joy for those with the heart to demand it. Peace College is made up of a faculty and staff that demand the best out of themselves and out of the students. Students strive to achieve excellence in academics and student organizations because of the tradition of excellence here at Peace. There is always someone around to receive advice, guid- ance, or support from when needed, and that creates a family atmosphere. Look at what the faculty, staff, and students of Peace College achieve, and you will have the answer to what makes Peace College a first class experience. "

"In the past two years at Peace, I have discovered many wonderful treasures. The greatest treasure I have formed is friendship. The friends I have made symbolize Peace to me. Like someone once said, 'Don't be dismayed by good-byes. A farewell is necessary before you can meet again, and meeting again, after moments or lifetimes, is certain for those who are friends. ' As I leave Peace, I say good-bye to the friend- ships that have created such great memories. I look forward to meeting again.

The Leadership Scholars, led by the Dean of Students, Janice
Edwards, play an active role in activities around the campus and
community. Scholarship recipients are chosen based on contributions
made to their community and school, and an interview. The Scholars
meet every Monday, from 3:15 to 5:15 for a class entitled Leadership
for Women." As part of the program. Leadership Scholars are required
to actively participate in a community or Peace College organization at
least one hour each week.

Rusted Suing Sets
Where did it all go?
the playhouse full of dolls, teddy hears, suing sets, baseballs . . .
Where did it all go?
The laughter that can he heard on a warm Saturday afternoon . . .
all of us racing to get home before the rise of the moon.
The trips to the mall.
the movies and the circus . . . just an elite group of friends
and the parents who came with us.
The driver's license that followed
permitting us on the road . . . the sports car we all dreamed of
and the safe one we drove.
The smile of our first love
with a rose in his hand . . . the soft kiss by the door
whispered goodbyes from the man.
Our graduation from high school, started the beginning of college . . .
papers, computers, math problems, and sororities we pledged.
The kneel of our true love
and the ring that he bore . . . white wedding gowns, bridesmaids,
and romantic vacations he paid for.
New voices of children
muddy hands and dirty faces . . . teddy bears, swing sets.
lost baseballs in unknown places.
Where did it all go?
gone like the blink of an eye . . . a moment becomes a lifetime
not hesitating to pass by.
The rusted swing set and severed bear remind us to make every moment last .
for the future is far too near to worry about the past.

It's been a great year! As editor of the 1991- 92 Lotus, I must first thank the entire year- book stall. Obviously, this book would not have been possible without you. Thank you for all the hard work you contributed, the late night hours you spent, and the dead- lines you met! I also want to express my ap- preciation to Mrs. Williams who was the or- ganization, information, and pillar of calm- ness — even at deadlines — behind the en- tire compilation ol our yearbook. I extend another thank you to the art department, Ms. Baird, Ms. Parker, and all the artists who contributed artwork to this year's Lotus. Your originality and visual expres- sion complemented each section, giving this Lotus edition distinct creativity. Thank you all once again for a wonderful year! We hope we have preserved your time at Peace and given you a lirst-class memory of your first- class experience at Peace.

He Does
Does God watch each leaf that falls,
Each color of the sky? Does He notice every baby bird.
And when it begins toffy? Does He see each burning sunset
As the colors flame and fade? Is God always there to watch us
And the beauty that He made? If for any instant you may doubt,
Just take a look above At fiery trees against neverending sky- All nantre show God s love. And if God watches every Robin
And God loves every flaming tree. How much more must He love us,
And guide our destiny.
