THE 1959

Lebanon, Illinois

We, the 1959 McKendrean Staff, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Fred Fleming, biology professor. It is with deep gratitude and appreciation that we dedicate it to him for his untiring efforts in behalf of our education and the sincere Christian witness that he displays both in and out of the class room.

DR. WEBB B. GARRISON

Since coming to McKendree College in June 1957, Dr. Garrison has begun a vigorous campaign to make the college truly a school "where education is a Christian adventure." Lights have burned late in his office as he has worked to solve the many problems facing the 131-year old institution. As his second year as president of McKendree ends, Dr. Garrison can look proudly behind him at the progress he and the school have made.

History was made on February 5 when the famous McKendree bell came down from it's resting place in the steeple of the 102- year-old Marion Bothwell Chapel. The 60 foot steeple shattered as it fell 80 feet to the ground. The picture on the right shows the bell resting on the ground. The one below shows students collecting souvenirs.

PETTUS RANDALL

IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES

/T\ P O. BOX 934

cfuJcalooda, tllabama December 1, 1958

Mr. Donald G. Metzger McKendree College Lebanon, Illinois

Dear Mr. Metzger:

You have been recommended to us from your campus for recognition in the 1958-59 Edition of WHO'S WHO AMONG STUDENTS IN AMERICAN UNIVERSITIES AND COLLEGES. It is a pleasure to tell you that your nomination has been accepted.

The students recognized by this organization each year are nominated from approximately 750 colleges and universities. Campus nominating committees are instructed to consider, in making their selections, the student's scholarship; his participation and leadership in academic and extracurricular activities; his citizenship and service to the school; his promise of future usefulness.

The organization awards each member a certificate of recognition, presented on the campus either at graduation or earlier in the year. Also, it provides a placement or reference service to assist members seeking employment, scholarships or fellowships, etc. There is no cost to mem- bers for inclusion in the publication or for any of the services rendered by the organization.

Before you fill in the blank forms that accompany this letter, please read the Instruction Sheet; this sheet explains the nature of each form and the purpose for which it will be used. It is your responsibility to complete your forms carefully, particularly the two biography blanks and to mail your completed forms to this office promptly. One of the Employment Forms should be returned with your other forms; and the other along with your requests for recommendation. Try to return your forms within ten days at the latest so there will be no chance of omission.

Our staff wishes to add its compliments to those you have received on the campus and to extend you a cordial welcome. We hope you will con- sider this recognition a small reward for work well done and an encourage- ment for the future.

Sincerely yours,

HPRrmw H- Pettus Randall

Well, When you get this far, you should be through the MCKENDREAN. I hope you liked it. There was the usual last minute rush and sleepless nights, but there was also the joy of working together.

Words cannot express the thanks due to Char- lie Cox. With camera in hand, he took the ma- jority of the pictures appearing in this book. A word of thanks also to the advisor, Mr. Orville Schanz, who helped design this yearbook cover and to my staff for their untiring efforts and putting up with me. I further want to thank the administration for giving me the opportunity of being Editor.

I sure hope everybody's name was spelled correctly and that nobody was left out of an or- ganizational picture. Oh ! yes, let me be the first one to wish you a Merry Christmas for 1959.
