Loosen clothing, if any, 2 lune of water by laying body on its aioinechead ey, by the middle so that the head hangs down. Jerk the body afew times. 3. Pull tongue forward, using handkerchief, or pin with string, if necessary. 4. Imitate motion of respira- tion by al y comp g and exp i: the lower ribs, about twenty times a minute. Alternately raising and lowering the arms from the sides up above the head will stimulate the action of the lungs, Let it be done gently but persistently. 5. Apply warmth and friction to ex- tremities. 6. By holding tongue forward, closing the nos- trils, and pressing the ‘* Adam’s apple ” back (so as to close entrance to stomach), direct inflation may be tried. Take a deep breath and breathe it forcibly into the mouth of pa- tient, compress the chest to expel the air, and repeat the operation. 7. DON’T GIVE UP! People have been saved after HOURS of patient, vigorous effort. 8. When breathing begins, get patient into a warm bed, give WARM drinks, or spirits in teaspoonfuls, fresh air, and quiet. SUNSTROKE.—There are two important indications for treatment — reduction of gan Gaes and the use of ane lants. The patient should first be removed to a cooler spot if possible, or at least where shade can be secured. The treatment should be begun at once. The clothing about the neck and body must be either loosened or removed. Cold is particularly indicated in cases where there is great heat of the body, and delirium and convulsive movements are present. This means of reducing the temperature may be applied inthe shape of cracked ice about the head and spine, or the use of cold water. If the heat of the body is very great, it may be necessary to wrap the patient in sheets wet with cold water. Iftheréis, besides the great heat, evidence of serious depression, stimulants must be used while the cold is being applied. HMORRHAGE.— The usual treatment is rest in the re- cumbent position; small pieces of ice should be freely swal- lowed, and the application of ice wrapped in a towel or in an ice-bag, or snow, cold water, etc., over the stomach; hot applications may be applied to the extremities. _FIRE IN A BUILDING.— Crawl on the floor. The clearest air is the Jowestin the room. Cover head with woolen wrap, wet if possible, Cut holes forthe eyes. Don't get excited. a ie oy — et K | BURNS AND SCALDS.— Cover with cooking soda and lay wet cloths over it. Whites of eggs and olive oil, Olive oil or linseed oil, plain, or mixed with chalk or whiting. Sweet or olive oil and lime-water. Shock, which is always present in severe burns, requires the administration of stimulants, Pain is more constant and intense in burns than in any other form of injury, and requires sedatives, which should be adminis- tered by the medical attendant. Second —Russia’s refusal to recognize Ja- pan’s paramount interests in Korea, and her own diplomatic moves in ‘that peninsula looking toward treaty rights under which she might gain control of the port of Fu- san, the.more northern harbors of Vladi- vostok and Port Arthur having proved less serviceable than had been anticipated. Third—Japan's 7-yr.-old grudge against Russia for ousting her from Port Arthur at the close of her contest with China, and _ (also) Russia's fatal ignorance of Japan's preparedness and her over-confidence in her own strength. Chicago, Aug, 29,—Local weather in the northwest was the main weakening feature in the wheat market here. A minor factor was the conclusion of arrangements for peace between Russia and Japan. At the close wheat for Sept. delivery was off % elose wheat for Sept. delivery was off %@3c. Corn was down 1%c. Oats showed. ‘Weakness in the wheat pit developed after trading was well underway. At the opening the market was quite steady, Gz. small local receipts and: a comparatively steady tone of cables. Pit traders were inclined to sell, but for a time offerings were well taken by commission houses. Later may small holders became active sellers, and prices quickly declined. An increase of 1,500,000 bu. in the world’s visible supply, shown by Bradstreet’s, was one reason for the increased selling during the last half of the session. Anouncement of the ami- cable settlement of peace negotiations at Portsmouth had some effect on late trad- ing. A slight rally occurred on covering by shorts, but the close was weak. Pri- mary receipts were 607,000 bu. Weakness prevailed in the corn pit the entire day. Commission houses and cash interests’ were liberal sellers. Lower cables increased receipts and almost perfect weather for the maturing of the crop were the chief bearish factors. The market closed weak with prices at practically the lowest point of the day. Local receipts | were 787 cars, with 419 of contract grade. Oats were weak in sympathy with other grains. The volume of trading was light. Local receipts were 447 cars. Estimated receipts for tomorrow: 51 cars; corn, 416 cars; oats, 237 cars. Open. High. Low. Clos. Prev. 78% 80% 8344 51% 42% 4256 25% 2646 14 75 14 72 T 87 7 90 Ribs—Sept. 8 77 £ Oct. 8 85 New. P. B: Weeks, S. R. An- | 'thony and E. H. Talbot, executors of the will and testament of A. G. Weeks, one of the former directors of the bank, against whom Receiver Allen made such serious charges last month. Weeks and’ Talbot, as executors, were mentioned in Receiver Allen’s bill, which alleged gross mismanagement, fraudulent and collusive conduct of the affairs of the bank, and asked tor an accounting for the losses of the stockholders by the failure in 1902. The total losses, according to the re- ceiver, were between $300,000 and $500,000. A suit in law was also filed against Talbot and Weeks, as executors, and the’ad dam- num placed at $300,000. Neither man was charged with any per- sonal responsibility, and neither was { charged .with having known anything about the alleged losses for which the estate was held liable by Receiver Allen. According to the demurrer, the plaintiff, on his own showing, was not entitled to the relief prayed for in his own, on which he seeks to charge these defendants in their capacity of executors jointly with other defendants acting in their own right. The demurer declares, moreover, that the cause for the bill in which they are con- cerned was abated by the death of Weeks, for whom they are executors. The bill seeks to hold these defendants for the alleged violations of the testator of the provisions of the national bank act, but does not allege that such violations have been determined in any U.S. court in any suit brought by the comptroller. Officer Melvin Did Not Have Witness to Back Up Hie Claim. J. M. Barry, 552 Tremont st., in the Rox- bury court on the charge of having a “fake’? number on his automobile, was dis- charged by Judge Bolster. It was largely a case of veracity or eye- sight between Barry, an instructor in au- tomobile driving and Mounted Officer Mel- vin, who summoned Barry into court. Melvin’s story was that on Aug. 238, at 4.10 p. m., he overtook Barry on Mass. ave.; ‘automobile was the regulation Mass. highway commis- sion’s number, 0182, and on tie pack on a piece of pasteboard was 0182. Barry under oath claimed he knew noth- that the only num- ber he owns is 6862, and that he has per- mission to use a temporary card for 60 days. He produced his number, badge and permit. ; “It seems that the auto number 0182 be- longs to W. C. Masters, 16 Columbus ave. Officer Melvin told the court he didn’t have Masters aS a witness because autox mobilists back up each other’s stories so frequently. In this puzzling predicament, the fact that in broad daylight an officer couldn’t copy a number of 4 digits or else that Barry was a perjurer, Judge Bolster said Masters ought to have been summoned as a witness, and ordered Barry’s discharge.
