DROWNING.— 1x. Loosen clothing, if any. 2 Empty lungs of water by laying neey on its stomach, and lifting it by the middle so that the head hangs down. Jerk the body afew times. 3. Pull tongue forward, using handkerchief, or pin with string, if necessary. 4. Imitate motion of respira- tion by alternately compress: and expanding the lower ribs, about twenty timesa minute. Alternately raising and lowering the arms from the sides up above the head will stimulate the action of the lungs, Let it be done gently but persistently. 5. Apply warmth and friction to ex- tremities. 6. By holding tongue forward, closing the nos- trils, and pressing the ‘* Adam’s apple ”’ back (so as to close entrance to stomach), direct inflation may be tried. Take a deep breath and breathe it forcibly into the mouth of pa- tient, compress the chest to expel the air, and repeat the operation. 7. DON’T GIVE UP! People have been saved after HOURS of patient, vigorous effort. 8. When breathing begins, get patient into a warm bed, give WARM drinks, or spirits in teaspoonfuls, fresh air, and quiet.
SUNSTROKE.—There are two important indications for treatment — reduction of temperature and the use of stimu- lants. The patient should first be removed to a cooler spot if possible, or at least where shade can be secured. The treatment should be begun at once. The clothing about the neck and body must be either loosened or removed. Cold
present. is means of reducing the temperature may be applied in the shape of cracked ice about the head and spine, or the use of cold water. If the heat of the body is very great, it may be necessary to wrap the patient in sheets wet with cold water. Ifthereis, besides the great heat, evidence of serious depression, stimulants must be used while the cold is being applied.
H2MORRHAGE.— The usual treatment is rest in the re- cumbent position; small pieces of ice should be freely swal- lowed, and the application of ice wrapped in a towel or in an ice-bag, or snow, cold water, etc., over the stomach; hot applications may be applied to the extremities.

Later on the appearances of inflammation and other complications are to be carefully watched for.
SUFFOCATION FROM INHALING ILLUMINATING GAS. — Get into the fresh air as soon as possible and lie down. Keep warm. Take ammonia—twenty drops to a tumbler of water, at frequent intervals; also, two to four drops tincture of nux vomica every hour or two for five or six hours.
TESTS OF DEATH.— Hold mirror to mouth, If living, moisture will gather. Push pin into flesh. If dead, the hole will remain; if alive, it will close up. Place fingers in front of a strong light. If alive, they will appear red; if dead, black or dark.

An impressive few moments were those during which Mr. Thompson played the “Sanctus,” from Gounod’s »“St. Cecilia Mass,” and following this Rev. Mr. Froth- ingham réad the last poem which Mr. Aldrich ever wrote and which was in mem- ory of the poet Henry Wadsworth Long- fellow, on the occasion of the Longfellow centennial anniversary in February. ‘This poem, it will be recalled, Mr. Aldrich wrote for the Atlantic Monthly, in the March number of. which it was. printed. The verses, as read by the clergyman, are as follows:
LONGFELLOW [1807—1907 } Above his grave the grass and snow Their soft antiphonal strophes write: Moonrise and daybreak come and go: Summer by Summer on the ‘height The thrusnes find melodious breath; Here let no vagrant winds that blow Across the spaces of the night Waisper of death. They do not die who leave their thought Imprinted on some deathless page. Themselves may pass; the spell they wrought Endures on earth from age to age. And thou, whose voice but yesterday Fell upon charmed listening ears, Thou shalt not know the touch of years; Taou holdest time and chance at bay. Tnou livest in. thy living word As when its cadence first was heard. O Gracious Poet' and benign, Beloved presence! now as then Thou standest by the hearts of men. Their fireside joys and griefs are thine; Thou speakest: to them of their dead, They listen and are comforted. They break tne bread and pour the wine Of life with thee, as in those days Men saw thee passing on the street Beneath the elms—-O reverend feet That walk in far celestial ways!

a2 WARMEST DECEMBER ON WEATHER BUREAU’S RECORD
The past month has been the warmest December since the weather bureau was established in 1872.
The lowest temperature in the month was 20 above zero.
Weather: Forecaster Smith is happy to record another record established by vari- able New England weather.
On one day in the past month, Dec. 10, the mercury in the thermometers climbed to 64, almost summer heat.
In past years Boston has had some De- cember days when the mercury hid down J in the bulb and barely had the courage to register 12 below zero.
VERMONTERS MAKE MONEY PICKING MOUNTAIN FERNS >
so
Bennington, Vt., Nov. 13.—The fact that farmers are turning to very profitable ac- .» count the wild ferns with which the Green Mountain sides in southern Vermont are overgrown, has just come to public notice here, fe During the dull days following the last ot} the year’s regular farm harvesting the | farmers are earning exceptionally good/ wages in gathering ferns and sending them to New York and Boston florists.
In many of the mountain towns in this.
i section whole families may now be seen picking ferns.
While the amount paid is only 40 cents a¥ thousand, it is said that the ferns are so plentiful that a good picker can easiiy gather as many as 10,000 in a day, mak- ing a wage of $4. The ferns are tied in bunches of 25 and delivered at the nearest railroad station for shipment.
The greater: part of the harvest is sold through: jobbers, who place the ferns in cold storage and sell to the florists during the winter. The ferns are used for back- grounds in packing flowers.
