Ques. 1-k What Preachers have died during the past year? Rev. Wm. Arnold was born in Ashboro', North Carolina, on the 4th of March, 1786, and died in Eatonton, Georgia, 12th January, 18C0. At the age of sixteen ho joined the Methodist Episcopal Church, and in his twentieth year he was licensed to preach, and in his twenty-sec- ond year he joined the South Carolina Conference, which then embraced the State of Georgia. He was an active laborer for twenty-two years, during which time he was twice elected to the General Conference and served sixteen years as Presiding Elder. As a preacher he ranked among the first of his day. His sermons were admirably arranged and well digested, richly interspersed with poetical quotationsjudiciously selected and admirably adapted. He was a man of an exceedingly gentle and amiable spirit, and was beloved by all who knew him. Ills last sermon was preached on the last Sabbath in 1859. He seemed to be conscious that it was his last and so expressed himself. In a few days thereafter he was attacked with Pneumonia and lingered until the tenth day, during which time he suffered much ; but there was no time when his mind was not entirely clear, or when he had not the fullest assurance of his accep- tance with God. On one occasion he said, "I am a great sufferer, I want the hour to come." On another, he said, "My trust is firm in the Lord Jesus Christ, I am confident of heaven ; my trust is unwavering. "' The last expression that he was understood to utter was "Glory ! Glory! Glory 1" Thus in the full assurance of the blessedness of that heavenly world to which, in his ministrations, he had so often directed his transported hearers, his life and labors ended togeth- er quite in the verge of heaven.

Noah Smitu, a Superanuated Minister, died on the morning of the 14th of September, 1S60. We have no information as to the time and place, either of his birth, conversion, or admission to the ministry. He was admitted into the Georgia Conference about the year 1837 or 1S38, and took a superanuated relation in 1858. For many years he was a popular and useful traveling preacher. He possessed a useful order of talent and was characterized by more than ordinary ability in preaching great zeal, uncommon success as a revivalist, and extraordinary facility in making his gifts available to all classes of persons. He was a man of right principles, ar- dent piety, and generous soul. Indefatigable in labors, amiable in temper, sociable in spirit, and affable in his manners, he was beloved by all his ministerial brethren, respected and esteemed by the church. Few ministers in Georgia have been instrumental in the con- version of more souls. The circumstances of his death were peculiar, ne attended a Camp- meeting in Tallapoosa county, Ala., where he labored with uncommon zeal, spiritualty and efficiency. After the Camp-meeting he continued his labors with unabated ardorat a protrac- ted meeting. He frequently intimated a presentment of his approaching dissolution. The day before his death he declared publicly, while he seemed to be transported with heavenly rapture, that he expected soon to die. No! he exclaimed emphatically, "I shall never die; I'll just go to sleep and wake up in heaven I" How soon was the presentment realized ! The next morning he was found in his bed, his body still warm, but the vital spark was fled. The spirit had returned to its God. Thus, doubtless, our brother "fell asleep in Jesus.''

Rev. James B. Turner was born in Hancock county, Ga., January 20th, 1798. His mother was a religious woman and dedicated him to God in his infancy. lie grew up to the age of seventeen, a moral, well-disposed boy. He was awakened under the ministry of Rev. Kobt. L. Edwards, and was converted in October, 1810. In the year 1813, he was admitted into the South Carolina Conference, traveled many years, and in 1835 took a superanuated relation, "without claim," which relation he sustained at the time of his death, on the 5th of November, 1S00. He was decided in his opinions, frank and candid in their expression— sincere in his motives, genuine in his piety, ever prompt to defend the church and to vindicate the cause of his mas-

ter, he was a useful and venerated minister. lie supported his last affliction with christian fortitude and resignation, answering all the inquiries of his fiieuds concerning his future hopes, in the most satisfactory manner. When asked if he was ready to go, he answered, "I am ready ; certainly I am!" Some one asked him : Are you aware that you are dying ? He answered, '■'■Yes lam/" Are you prepared t "lam! lam!" and lifting both hands in token of victory, he expired. Thus our venerable brother passed from earth to the mansions of the blessed.

REPORT OF THE BOOK COMMITTEE OF TOE GEORGIA CONFERENCE.

The Committee beg leavi that they met at the Depository in Macon, Ga., on the

t>lst of March, and were pleased to find the business prospering. Finding the _store occupied by the Agent too small for the purposes of the Depository, at the suggestion of the Executive Committee, as well as of the Agent, they authorized him to procure a larger one if practicable. This has been done, and we arc pleased to say, that a building in every way suitable hasbecn leased far three years from flrel of October last. During the first thn I the current

year, the business of the Depository was very successful, the sales being large and the cash re- ceiptsgood; but for the stringency of the money market daring the lasl quarter, tb would probably have reached the sum of forty thousand dollars. This opinion is predicated upon the report of the agent herewith submitted by which it will be seen, that the sales amount to the sum of thirty-six thousand two hundred and fifty-six dollars and nine cents.— tjp to November first, the Agent has been able to meet all the liabilities of the Depository. without difficulty) but in view of the difficulties in obtaining ordinary bank facilities at pres- ent, this cannot continue unless the present debts due the Depository shall be promptly paid. The Committee, therefore, earnestly urge all who are indebted to tin- Depository to make pay- ment without delay, and thus relieve the Depository of its embarrassments.

At the fir t glance at the Agent's report, it may appear that the indebtedness of the Deposito- ry is very large, but considering the small amount of capital with which it commenced, and

10

the stock absolutely necessary to continue its bnsincss, and the recent stringency in the mon- ey marked, the indebtedness does not exceed wh^t might have been expected; for by exam- ining the Assets and Liabilities of the Depository, as shown in the report, it will be Been that the business baa been profitable, and that the Depository is still on a firm basis. It is. how- ever, of the first importance for its future success, that the preachers gfrre early aid in I b and eh'culation of the book-. The Committee feel assured thai the Depository nier i- with the favor of the people, as an evidence of which, our Traveling Agent. 1,'ev. ,1. Blakely Smith, had ■I in oash, notes, and good open subscriptions during the year. $11,665 00. The follow- ing resolutions have been passed by the Committee,

Hesoh>il. That persons who remain in arrears to the Depository at the close ofeaeb of the Georgia Annual Conference, shall not be furnished with books on credit until all arrearages are paid, provided thai the Agent andjExecutlve Committee may extend the time of payment not exceeding six months, when in their judgment the interest of the Concern may t iiereby be promoted.

Resolved, That the Agent be requested to keep the stock constantly Insured to the full a of its value.

Resolvt'l, Thai we recommend to the Conference so to change the Constitution as to hold the annual meeting of the Committee in Macon, (ia., on the 1st Wednesday in May.

Resolved. That we recommend the re-appointment of Rev. J. W. Burke, as Agent for the De- pository.
