FRANCK Dept. of Cell Biology, Microbiology, and Molecular Biology University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida 33620 afranck@mail.usf.edu ABSTRACT A paratype of Harrisia fernowii is here designated as the lectotype, correcting a previous lectotype designation. Harrisia fernowi Britton was described from collections in Cuba and living accessions. The two cited paratypes are Taylor 254 (NY) and a collection by Charles Wright. There are two collection numbers of Harrisia from Cuba by Charles Wright but Britton (1908) does not specify either. The protologue of H. fernowii states “description mainly from N. Y.B.G. no. 25766, collected by Norman Taylor (no. 254)’ (Britton 1908). The Taylor 254 specimen consists only of two flower buds in a packet that are mounted along with flowers which were collected from the living plant at the New York Botanical Garden in 1912. The flowers are unavailable as lectotypes since they were collected after publication of the name (Franck 2012). The Taylor 254 flower buds appear to represent the original collection and are here designated as the lectotype. Franck (2012) mistakenly chose an uncited specimen that likely comprised original material for the lectotype of H. fernowii and overlooked the paratypes. McNeill et al. (2012), Art. 9.12 states that “the lectotype must be chosen from among the paratypes” and “‘if no cited specimens exist, the lectotype must be chosen from among the uncited specimens.” Harrisia fernowii Britton, Bull.
