This very large flaccid Himalayan species does not grow in Southern India, and I have never found it in, or seen speciméns from, Ceylon ; it has been much confounded with the larger forms of proxima, B/., (rhomboidea, Wadd.) and it waslumped with that by Sir W. Hooker, under the name of polypodioides, and Baker in the new edition of the Synopsis lumps proxima with strigosa which, [ am sure, is a mistake, the specimens from which my figure of spelunco are taken were gathered by Mr. Clarke at Rishop (3,500 feet) near Darjeeling, I have never seen the species growing, but from its very large size and very flaccid texture, it must, I think, be easily distinguished from hirta, but proxima hirta and spelunce are all ones allied and the Kew packets of speluncee certainly contained a) mixture of all three. ®. I constantly find Bay mnopteris lanceolata with its broad sterile fronds contracted at ‘the apex and soriferous and the same occurs constantly with G. _ tricuspis. This genus will probably have to give way in favor of Drynaria with which it quite agrees in habit and venation, the 2 species are better associated with Aglaomorpha Meyeniana and Dryostachyum splendens (Philippine plants which have already gone _into Drynaria) than with any of the Acrostichez. 1, PHOTINOPTERIS RIGIDA, Wail.—Malacea, Ferns British India, tab. 211. 2, PHOTINOPTERIs DRYNARIOIDES, Hk. —Penang. No. 1 has round — tuberous roots, the frond of a stout texture, and indistinct venation ; No. 2is a very minute form; No.3 has a wiry rootstock, the — frond of a thin texture, and prominent venation. An immense number of species of this section (Euophioglossum “ fertile spike — single from the base of the barren segment”) have been described and these have been reduced to 6 in the Synopsis, but looking — through the large collection at Kew from all parts of the world, I was inclined to think that they might all be considered mere local varieties of one species, there are very gradual transitions from the wiry to the tuberous root stock, and from the stout veinless to the thin prominently veined texture.—There are Himalayan specimens referred to « lusitanicum,” L. and to “ vulgatum,” L, these both — appear to be intermediate between reticulatum and bulbosum, , ’ 4, OPHIOGLOSSUM PENDULUM, Z.—Ceylon, North India and Malacca.
