Your esteemed letter of June ol of last year arrived on Auß. 3, and we are most obliged to you for the enclosed seeds of seVve- ral new species of cacti We shall! sow them only in the Spring, so as not to lose any by sowinge them too late in Winter, but we did test some of C._giganteus riseht away, and must confirm your appre- hensiom, that they would not rerminate any more. We prepared imme- diately a shipment according to your desire for vou,.consisting of as many coniferscas we had at the time on hand“ in good seedSs,, and shall in the Springrtransmit another shipment, when a new har- vest of all species will be available About the handling of the case we wrote to Prof. Mettenius, but did not receive an answer from hims he was possibly absent in a spa. We, therefor, shipped the case directly through the Messrs-James R.Mac Donald & Co. in Ham- burg, and pash the freisht from here to New York for it. Doenrch,, thoush he was here during the exposition, did not visit us, most likely through lack of time. He could not have taken the case with him very well, and thus the route taken by us will get you into possessiom of the shipment in the fastest way without causing hirher expenditures« We enclosed further four Esdortmehts of flower seeds, which, even if you yourself will sow only a little, will hopefully be not undesired by youfor further distribution to amateursfriends. We could not comply' this time with your wish for a flower of Leuchtenbereia, but we hope, that it will become poS- sible next year... Of course, we would take care of all expenses, Even though you mentioned in your last letter that recently you did not work so much on cacti, it might still be possible that you may receive some good things from your acquaintances, for instance seeds of Cerew giganteus or other species from Arizona about which you wrote previously and which were also distributed by you, as Cereus caespitosus, chlorantus, conoideus, Emoryi, longisetus, apaucispinus, poly- acanthus, stramineus, Mammillaria applanata, barbata, fissurata, nifera, lasia- cantha, macromeris, megacantha, micromeris, pectinata, radiosa, Scheeri, sulcata, vivipara, Echinocactus brevihamatus, Fmoryi, Lecontei, polycephalus, Whipplei, Wislizeni, et£c. Do you believe to be able to have sent to us, as you mentioned previously, seeds and perhaps living plants of Yucca baccata and Treculeana? As well as the Pinus species from South Carolina? If you have not yet written for them, we should appreciate your doing so after receipt of this letter, Linum Berlandieri which had the kindness to send us, is now in bloom, but does not have any seeds, Mentzelia ornata did not germinate, Of Echinocactus viridescens we still have 15, of Mammillaria coryphanta (4) still one young little plant. Agave Padmeri did not grow. We saved some little plants of Agave virginica. The two Pinus did germinate well, but unfortunately, most of the seedlings fell down and the few remaining ones were later eaten by mice, Hoping to hear from you again soon, and with best greetings Haage & Schmidt 9 10 copyright reserved PR 79T u is, Men 177 Gr 2 dur GE GAR? za. vi En E: I ERITR - | IOOF G 0. Dr. Geo, Engelmann, St. Louis, Missouri, 3003 LocustStreet We hope you have received our two letters dated May 20th and August 13th and have occasion to think of you since we received today a shipment of seeds of various Agave which Roezl collected last summer in Mexico,* Seen from a gardener's standpoint, A. stricta or Hystrix are the best of all and Roezl also sent of these and some other species living plants which, however, remained in Gent. Without anything further today, we should appreciate receiving a letter from you soon with some answer to our previous questions, Sincerely yours, Haage & Schmidt *Roezl collected in the vicinity of Tehuacan and on the way there from Vercruz. MISSOURI . BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN Be A Since you probabäy would like to have P, Elliottii soon, I think it best to send this immediately to New York to be shipped to Hamburg or Bremen; of course, this will add to to your expenses and it is a question whether this shipment is worth that to you. Therefore, I am not sending anything else until I hear from you, It will be best to sow P, Elliottii soon; at home, it germinated in November and December and grows up until May so that it can stand the summer heat and lack of water. Light, but not sterile soil near the coast, also probably damp country is its habitat, Mentzelia is two years old, Do you have any agent in New York to whom I could send the shipments? I understood that you only wished to receive the seeds (and not the closed cones) of the conifers, Young Yucca Treculeana may probably be obtained from Texas, But I have to know the height, the time you want it sent and the way it should be packed and what I can offer for this in your name; otherwise I am afraid it might cost more than it is worth to you. Sincerely yours, Dr. G. Engelmann I believe it is better not to enclose anything in this letter, but to send everything in the boxy 2 ) 4 9 6 % 8 9 10 MIssourt . C.L.Transl.) 3003 Locust Street St. Louis, 25 Nov. 1873. Dear Sirs, I have received your variuus letters safely. My best thanks for the seeds you sent recently, After receiving your first letter of May 20th ae I contacted those of my correspondents from whüch I hopes to obtain the desired seeds, The one in Texas wrote me that he is too old and feeble to collect and that it is impossible to hire someone else, since wvery worker easily makes more money than one could pay for this job. Another one at the frontier of Utah and Arizona refused any exchange, but he said he would send seeds and plants of Yucca and Agave, However, I have not heard from him since, Finally, the third one, a physician in South Carolina, the discoverer of Finus Elliottii, was willing to collect seeds üf his expenses were paid which would be quite high. And just now I received a sack full of P, Elliottii and P. australis which bears ffuit only every two years, didn't have any this year, the others _P,. glabra and F, serotina were too far away and too difficult to obtain; of glabra we have half a hundred cones, almost without seede, P. Elliottii weighs more than six pounds and costs $ 20.00. I am afraid this will be too much for you and am afraid to place further orders for these, in any event, they were accepted only as a favor to me, My friend sent me some seeds of Chamaerops Hystrix, Sabal serrulatum and 5. Palmetto which I don't need and which I am sending you, What you sent under the name of gloriosa is all Y. aloifolia, which, as you probably know, is called gloriosa by the gardeners, I was finally able to obtain a real seeds of gloriosa and I am enclosing some for your comparison, They are between aliofölia and filamentosa,.. I was unable to obtain anything from Arizona, even though some officers (friends of mine) with the troops there (Arizona is a very dangerous Indian country) made promises, One of them who recently passed through here gave me seeds of Yucca baccata which I am enclosing,. Also a few cactus and Ägave Seeds, Ihe question now is which is the best way to send you what I have for you now, copyright reserved Dan Bela Angeln, Alan, Bann » = Zr RT zn 5 22 ware: 7 = 2 ES: Ma Ri Br Ar ea Lan ar fh Cie mw Fahı.siar mul, Ay? Dear Dector, Exen though your kind letter of December 1st has been in our hands almost a whole month, we have not yet received the small box you said you were sending us, while normally such small shipments reach its destination at the same time the letter does, We did not mention our New York agents Austin, Baldwin & Co,., 72 Broadway, N,Y. in our last letter since their name appaars on the printed list of which we sent you several copies, if I am not mistaken, Probably this letter will arrive too late, otherwise we would ask you to send the shipment to them, We are very grateful for your efforts and if there should be an opportunity that we may be of service°you .„ please let us know, Should you find anything interesting in our catalogue for this year which be sent to you 14 days after this letter, please send us a list of what vou want. With regard to your several correspondents which you mentioned, we noted first that the one in Texas can make no promises since he is too old and feeble, However, we ourselves have a friend in San Antonio who makes every effort to collect plants and it would be very valuable to us if your friend could point out the localities were good and rare plants may be found, From your correspondent at the frontier of Utah and Arizona we could not expect living plants since the distance is too great, while, however, seeds of Yucca, Agave and good cacti of this region would be very welcome; as well as seeds of other ornamental plants which are native in this region. For some good specimens of Yucca brevifolia of which several hundred capsules could be collected, we would be willing to pay $ 20.00 or thereabouts, We thank your correspondent in South Carolina for having sent something. Whether the seeds collected of P, Elliottii are worth that much including all expenses, we can only tell after we have received the shipment; in any event no harm was done and it shall not deter us from further connections even though some times we pay more for something than it is worth, It would be easier to sell P, australis, since it is already known as very ornamental and we hope that seeds will xe#ix& ripen this year, It would be worthwhile to collect Salba serrulata and Palmetto since these are being offered by the bushel by New York seed dealers, On the other hand, Chamaerops hystrix remains for us the most desirable kind from this district, together with the Pinus species, 8 9 10 copyright reserved En Should you receive from Arizona some ripe seed berries of Cereus giganteus as well as any other cacti or Yucca species, your officer friends would do a service to horticulture, The magnificent illustrations in the Boundary Survey caused great interest in these species, Many thanks for the seeds of Yucca gloriosa which we will sow, We are enclosing in this letter $ 14 which we happen to have in American paper money in our cash box; as soon as the shipment arrives we will get in touch with you and enclose the rest we oweif we receive in the meantime more of these bills, otherwise we shall send a money order, Sincerely, Haage & Schmidt RZ MISSOURI i BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN DA Sr DEF nn Vf 7 = Sofern a ZL a sa .£ GA De Re PAAR 4 Ar >E u aA Papgl ei ae ln Au 719 FE, MEFHRE n BL Mast Aa Ad Er PR te PER WE , ae A a fee un age u 2: TE; an rl, 2 Basger | aaa DEAN Alan br ar. Engelmann, 3003 Locust Str, St. Louis, Mo, Your letter of Janyary 27th crossed ours of January 16th. Also, a few days later your shipment arrived in good condition, Especially the enclosed cacti are very beautiful and heälthy and we ard especially grateful to you for sending these, Chamaerops hystrix, however, even though harvested very early, looks as if the seeds had been ripe for a long time and some are quite dry. Hopefuhly some of them will germinate; their weight is only a quarter of that shipment we received previosly, seeds collected in Europe, Sum We credited you for the seeds with a round seme of 40 Thl. or $ 30.00 and deducted the $ 14.00 we already sent you, We could need for next year, i. e. as soon as you can get seeds again, the same amount of seeds of Pinus Elliotti as you just sent us, We shall try out Pinckneya pubens to see whether it can be cultivated, Sabal serrulata is not worth much; also it is being offered together with S. Adansoni and S. Palmetto by the bushel from New York seed dealers very sheaply ($ 8 per bushel), However, should Ch, hystrix sometimes bear many seeds which could be collected by your correspondent, we should accept ap to two bushel or 25 to 30 Dollars per bushel, Of P, australis we could use 10 to 20 pounds for approximately 2 1/2 to 3 Dollars per pound, Of P, serotina and P, glabra not so much because of their greater rarity and higher price, The other things enclosed in your shipment, especially the cones of 3 Pinus species and Vitis candicans were very interesting and we shall try to grow seedlings of te latter,. This species has been distributed in a few instances by the Berlin Botanical Garden, Canna flaccida was interesting to us since its seeds represent the genuine original species; they are completely different from the seeds from Southern France, Because of the many zaxx crossings, probably none of the species are genuine any more, at least not in cultävation, We immediately sowed the seeds (25/2), but up to now nothing came up even though Canna usually germinates within 10 or 12 days, A We hope that you have received our catalogue and kkak renew our request to send us a list of what you want so that we might pay off some of our debts, Should you ever receive any interesting cacti or other plants, you may be sure that we shall be glad to receive them, With respectful greetings, Yours Haage & Schmidt. However, there are 5 species mentioned which we don't have and since the American vines- species are beginning to cause great interest here, we should appreciate it if you would be able to obtain seeds or vines of the following species, These five species are Vitjs caribaea, DC., rupestris, Scheele; monticala, Buckley, arizonica, Englm.; california, Benth. You would oblive us very much if you could help us to obtain one or the other of these species, We hope that you received the conifer seeds and cones which you requested in your letter of 12th April; we sent them immediately upon receipt of your letter at the beginning of May as samples. An extended trip dealayed our answer to your letter and later we did not come back to it, We should be grateful if your friend in South Carolina could obtain this year seeds of Pinus australis & Elliotti for which we placed an order. The latter one seems to be very sensitive to our climate since we lost most of the young seedlings, not by frost, but the plants fell down even though thy appeared to be quite healthy. We have sown the two species of Juniperus osteosperma (4) which you sent us in your letter; the 100 s Yucca nanaliculata came up partly and are now shall plants, Ine seeds of Chamaerops hystrix which you sent previously did not germinate; of this kind we have only a fes young plants which came up from seeds from Palermo, The seeds sent to us as Sabal serrulata belong to the genus Chamaerops, at least with regard to their shape and we call it Ch. serrulata, Of the 2 Cereus you sent, none greW, but Yucca Whipplei took root and recovered completely, Hoping to hear from you soon, we remain with respectful greetings, Sincerely yours Haage & Schmidt II Il 8 9 10 copyright reserved EUEEZEN, da; \ . ae ee „far EEE, BG ezil Garn I Da Ana erg % £ m: Ms? | » 7 3 a RR Kr fl +; Out fa =. | 2 ae mans GA hr fr er er ELPBE a. 94 e = Bimger REEL: a. An extended stomach illness of the writer of this letter was the first case that all the correspondence x#amin remained un- answered during the summer and late fall since he was in the habit of duing that him- self. And then, one first encounters something which w is embarassing to write about, When your shipment arrived here end of May the first impression was that the entire contents of it was not worth the freight expenses. The plants were dried up and black, the seeds of Abies concolor mouldy and spoilt, and Yucca berries also very mouldy and a musty odor from all other seeds led us to believe the worst, namely a total loss of any capability of germination, However, everything was dried up and aired as much as possible and the result is still bearable; Yucca and Agave did not germinate, The Abies seeds were completely spoilt which was a great pity. Of the plants only some Agave utahensis were still alive; the beautiful Yucca brevifolia completely dried up and black; the magnificent 2 Echinocactus Wislizeni partly rotten; Mammillaria chlorantha and Cereus Engelmanni apparently allright and stayed that way partly through the summer, buä did not show any sign of life and are now dead, The entire shipment consisted of good things had we received it safely and at the right time for sale in urder to use the seeds, "le estimate the value at approx, 400 Mark or $ 100 gold. The actual value was under the circumstances half that much, We are sending you a money order for $ 50 in gold. Seeds, of course, are only of use for next season. Should we be successful and obtain a good result from the Yucca and Agave seeds which made up the main portion, we shall, of course, be willing to increase the amount, The seeds available from Utah, Abies concolor, Pinus flexibilis and monophylla, Agave utahensis, Yucca brevifälia, Shepherdia rotundifolia and Peraphyllum ramosissimum are good and we should welcome them if our price is all right with you, In such ases one cannot know in advance what one can order and at which price, also it is difficult to estimate the value of every item, 2 plants, we should welcome a small box of Yucca brevifolia and perhaps also one dozen strong specimens of Agavde utahensis, but sent quickäy and directly and to arrive not later than end of April, Du Whatever you can send us of good cacti is always welcome: such beautiful Echinocactus Wislizeni, if well preserved, would make as very happy. What we would like mostly are the hardy species from Colorado which can bear the frost and all the northern cacti species, Cereus Fendleri and viridiflorus, Mammillaria vivipara, cehiörantha, Nuttalli, papyracantha, Wouldn't it be possible for you obtain from one of your correspondents seeds of Robinia new-Mexicana which Thurber recommended as an especially beautiful shrub growing in the copper district? How is the climate in southern Utah and in which part of Europe would the plants growing there do best? Inspite of the very harsh winters which Colorado and New Mexico are supposed to have some times, the plants coming from there freeze here at a considerable hisher degree. On our large map of the United States neither St. George nor Glenday in Utah is entered; is it perhaps near Desert City? Will there be this year again seeds from South Carolina? Pinus palustris, Elliotti, Chamaerops hystrix, Pinckneya pubens? Again asking# you not to be angry for our long silence, we remain with friendly greetings, Sincerely yours, Haage & Schmidt % 8 9 10 MISSOURI . Engelmann in St. Louis, We received your letter of January 11th as well as your brochure concerning the Agaves, sent under separate cover, for which we are very much obliged, Especially the latter reached us just at the time to enable to sort out Agave Shawi and Deserti. which we received from California without seeds. Since we intended to include several seeds which you wanted for your correspondents, our answer was a little bit delayed, We shall send under separate cover 4 bags (2 at each time) which should contain all in all 50 species of flower seeds, 25 species of European and Asia&ic conifers, 50 species of leave trees, We hope made the right selection; however, we should prefer not to make the selection ourselves, but to receive lists of your needs. We are still sending two more of our catalogues which might pass on to your correspondents so that they may be able to make their selections, We should welcome a shipment of Sarracenia variolaris perhaps together with a large number of Dionaea mascipula which gprently also can be found in South Carolina and these should best be sent directly to New York in care of Dingelstedt & Co., 27 William Str., addressed to us. Should your correspondent be willing to include a few seeds of Pinus Elliotti as a sample, they would be welcome, but not too many since we are afraid that again none of them will grow. Conifers can stand such a transport only after having been grown in pots for at least a year Haxs and have roots, The Sarracenia and Dionaea would best be packed in damp peatmoss, however in such a way that they are not pressed together or begin to become hot. We should also welcome to receive at the same time a stronger (perhaps 2 1/2) specimen of Pinckneya pubens since it is difficult to grow this from seed, Please send us whatever you yourself have of seeds and make a second shipment later so that we don't miss the best seeding time, Would it be possible for you to obtain from your correspondent in Utah a small box of approximately 2 packs of Agave utahensis and Yucca brevifolia which sould be sent the quickest way without any delay? Perhaps also via Dingelstedt in New York, We hope to hear from you soon and we should be glad if you would let us know your needs, With respectful greetings, Sincerely yours, Haage & Schmidt | 10 MISSOURI: BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN er a, ur n HAAGE Zr Ber r ZA: ERFURT. | ar 577 re a Ya 002 mr. nd Lhaec, We en Daher AA un | FL er RG „ der An Ge us" RE 7 Gigmet, 74 Ber LERTR BR 6 — 8 9 10 MISSOURI i BOTANICAL copyright reserved GARDEN er ARTE z RE PS? us 22. Erfurt Dr. Geo, Engelmann, 3093 Locust Street, St. Louis, Mo. Dear Doctor, We still owe you letters and are in your debt for several shipments of seeds and plants, Of the latter, most died, The pretty Yucca brevifolia from Utah was already half dead on arrival as well as Agave utahensis and some cacti, Howevdr, we are very happy to tell you that from one of your former shipments Yucca Whipplei and Echinocactus Fendleri are still alive; the Yucca took years without any improvements and started to grow only last summer; Now, there are hundreds of this grown from seeds which are partly stronger than the original plant, the latter, however, has more narrow and thicker leaves, The msxk other reason for this letter is an Opuntia which has been distributed for some years under the name of spec, Kanzas and which proved to be during the last harsh winters the strongest plant growing outside, thronger than Rafinesquiana. Amofg the illustrations of the Cactaceae of the Boundary we do not find one which looke like this so that we cannot say this is it and no other, We are sending you some parts in a tin box under separate cover and hope that you will be able to let us know the correct name, If you don't have the time to answer right away, we should be happy if you would send us a postcard with the name of the Opuntia, We still have to acknowledge the receipt of the following brochures: The flowering of Agave Shaw with 2 plates The American Junipers The Oaks of the United States A Synopsis of the American Firs for which we thank you very much, even though belatedly. We wish you would give us an opportunity to be of service to you. You know we would send you Seeds, fruits or plants which could use, Unfortunately, we never receive enough conifer cones; where such can be obtained we list in our catalogue, Should you still have your correspondent in South Carolina, we should welcome if you would wxxkx write him to send us for the next season several pounds of seeds of Pinus Ellitti, but it would be best if we would know the amount so that we can send it to your correspondent, n 8 9 10 MISSOURI .
