Virginia Stein and her committee of 30 Las Voluntarias y Los Ayudantes are planning a Cinco de Mayo theme at the Preview Party punctuated with 2500 colorful Pelargoniums which will be for sale. On Sunday at 2 p.m., Miv Schaaf, popular writer for the Los Angeles Times, will draw the winning raffle tickets. Be — sure to buy enough tickets to be a winner! The featured plant this year is the Asian Pear. Three varieties will be shown all requiring minimum wintering. JUNE 6 ANNUAL DINNER Tootie Grivich’s Special Events Committee has planned an entertaining and informative evening. Your chance as a member to mingle and meet Trustees, officers and staff of your California Arboretum Foundation. The Chanteurs, the award winning Arcadia High Schoo! singing group, will entertain. Social hour is 6:30 p.m.; dinner, 7:30 p.m. ~ ARBORETUM WEDDINGS PLANNED Jo Iske is at the Arboretum to help you plan a truly memorable wedding and reception on the lovely grounds. Jo can be contacted at 447-8207. There is a fee structure. Donations are made to the Foundation for maintenance and development of the grounds. COMMITTEES IN ACTION Jim Curry’s Building Committee has presented the concept of an enclosed rotunda, visitor’s orientation center and education offices. Jim says this costly project needs an underwriter and he hopes some community minded company or citizen will step forth to aid in the completion of this long planned item. The Education and Public Information Committee is under Bruce McCallum’s direction. Planned is a new brochure telling of the work of the Foundation. Diane Martin and Alice Thomas are in charge of that aspect. This committee oversees the classes Wendy Sekovich, the Foundation’s new Educational Specialist, is planning. Nancy Baillie and her committee are considering four capital projects and want to see about fund raising for them. Carol Overturf with her Membership Committee is overseeing Elaine Hoffman, AliceThomas and Ruth Mary Larson as they plan a Deluxe Pictorial Album. . . WILD FLOWERS GIFT BOOK A wondertul new book called “Wild Flowers of the World” is now available in the Arboretum Gift Shop. This large book with its 192 color plates of wild flowers would look great on any coffee table. Joan DeFato, Plant Science Librarian, recommends it as authoritative. Flowers are listed by geographical distribution rather than by plant. $20. Members of the California Arboretum Foundation are entitled to a 10% discount on gift shop purchases. COMING EVENTS MAY 6 - 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. — Baldwin Bonanza. Three varieties of the Asian pear will be sold at this annual sale of rare or hard to find plants. Other unusual plants include batflowers, Chinese fringe trees and many tropical palms. MAY 19, 20 - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Satsuki and Azalea Show. This ninth annual show features multicolored azaleas trained in bonsai forms. Planting methods and bonsai training methods will be demonstrated throughout the show. MAY 20 - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Orchid Cactus Show. Cuttings and plants with shimmering, fist-sized flowers will be sold at the annual Epiphyllum Society show. Several colors combined on each petal make the blooms of the easy-to-grow epiphyllum look iridescent. MAY 26, 27, 28 - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m Bonsai Show. The Santa Anita Bonsai Society will feature miniature trees and landscapes at their 20th annual show. Members will explain bonsai training techniques and sell bonsai materials. JUNE 1, 2,3 - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Fuchsia Shaw. Begonias, ferns, orchids, bonsai and African violets and other shade plants will be displayed at the 2nd annual show by the National Fuchsia Society. An educational display with information about cuttings, soils and pesticides will be featured. JUNE 9 - Noon to 4:30 p.m. Daylily Show. The Southern California Hemerocallis Society will feature diploids, tetraploids, miniatures and several new hybrids of daylilies at their annual show. Plants will be sold and experts will answer questions at several education tables. JUNE 16, 17 - Sat. 1 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., Sun. 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Gladiolus Show. Virtually every type, class and color of gladioli can be inspected at the annual Southern California Gladiolus Society show. About 2,000 flowers, half of them in arrangements by the Floralia Guild will be on display. JUNE 23 - 7:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Slide Show. The International Palm Society offers a slide presentation titled, “Palms, Succulents and Ferns.” Dr. Mardy Darian of Vista, will narrate the show held in the Lecture Hall. JUNE 29, 30 & JULY 1 - 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Cactus and Succulent Show. The Cactus and Succulent Society of America will feature xerophytes from deserts of the world at their annual show.
