CALIFORNIA ARBORETUM FOUNDATION, INC. 1948-1973 Repott and Membership List May 1973 REPORT OF THE CALIFORNIA ARBORETUM FOUNDATION MAY 1973 Plans were started January 1972 in anticipation of celebrating the 25th anniversary of the California Arboretum Foundation in 1973 with a series of events centering around greater public par- ticipation. major membership drive was launched and, spear- eaded by an enthusiastic Board of Trustees, a membership has grown to over 1500, a healthy 100 per cent increase. An abbreviat- ed and brightly colored brochure, a list of member benefits, a ee ee ‘Aphrodite’, set aside as a bonus available to w mem rs only, and energetic salesmanship have attracted the any new eaeeeecas for dail rboretum. At their regular meeting in January of this r the Trustees voted that each Board member would nendatorth hold at least an annual con- i ob Because of the iminent development of Baldwin Avenue into a six ane divided highway, there have been traffice pattern dif- Se which would have resulted in a loss of parking spaces for e Arboretum. Happily, these problems are now mostly re- n gether to landscape Baldwin Avenue from Huntington Driv var ruary 20, exactly 25 years to the day, the California Avbarenim Foundation celebrated its Anniversary with ora Jr., Mrs. Harry Bauer, Mrs. John Mage, Mrs. Feavest Stanton, Howard ‘Miller. F. Harold Roach, and Geor rge Spalding. A HIS- TORY OF THE LOS ANGELES STATE AND COUNTY AR- BORETUM—THE FIRST TWENTY-FIVE iting was pub- lished by the Foundation and dedicated to Dr. Ayr Only months before he was to be included Loa those hon- ored on | ona 20, Ralph Cornell, one of the founders of the Arboretum, passed away. Besides being an active supporter of the Arboretum, he served for many years as President of the Foundation and the Board of Governors and contributed many horticultural photographs to LASCA LEAVES. We were also greatly saddened by the deaths of Mrs. Jerome Doolan, Arthur ace ies Freed, Mrs. Alexander King, and Mrs. William Munro. Shortly after he so obligingly wrote a preface to the recently published history of the Arboretum, W. W. Robinson died. He was always a loyal and helpful member and the first secretary of the Historical Committee. On February 16th the Conference of California Historical So- cities toured the Arboretum under the guidance of Mrs. Patricia Warren, Associate History Curator, and our elite group of vol- unteer history docents. The tour ended at the Santa Anita Depot where members of the Foundation Board served refreshments in the festively decorated baggage room. 23,642 visitors from 17 countries and every state except Vermont and North Carolina toured through the Depot last year. It is open a portion of four days each week and is staffed by Mrs. Warren and her assistant and ten regular volunteers. Christmas in the Depot is now cele- brated annually with an Open House on the second Thursday in December. A program of Foundation sponsored Sunday Afternoon Lec- tures and Morning Garden Walks has been so well received that from a beginning of 5 Lectures and 3 Walks given in 1972, this year there are 7 Lectures and 4 Walks, and we are proposing 12 Lectures and 11 Walks for 1974. Our members and others in the community seem eager for horticultural education and an over- subscribed series of 7 mini-courses given this year will be expand- ed to 15 for 1974. New Department brochures on POND ECOL- OGY, VEGETABLE GARDENING, and POISONOUS PLANTS OF SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA, have been very popular and are being mailed to all our members. The Foundation co-sponsors several flower shows every year with different horticultural or- ganizations. For 1974 a Spring Extravaganza and Horticultural Field Day is planned by the Foundation, bringing many of these groups and local garden clubs together for one large educational and horticultural exhibition. Our third Baldwin Bonanza was held on April first with a preview for members and their guests the evening before. Reser- vations for our first preview were 90 (mostly volunteers and their families, a sprinkling of staff members, a few Trustees); reserva- tions for the second Bonanza preview reached 200; reservations for this last preview came to 600 several days before the occasion and we soon stopped counting and realized we had a real BO- NANZA. On Sunday the customers were lined up four across from the entrance to the Demonstration Gardens, down the walk to the Rotunda, down the ramp to the gates and out to the park- ing lot, by the time the sale opened fifteen minutes early to ac- commodate this gathering throng. People bought memberships Pe in the Foundation as if they were buying a cup of coffee—ninety- one were sold. Buyers were lined up five deep at the plant tables. Without a doubt. the Baldwin Bonanza is a SUCCESS. Congrat- ulations and much gratitude go to the members of Las Voluntarias who have made it so. Countless hours go into the planning, pre- paration, and sale. Besides her other duties as President of Las Voluntarias, Mrs. Leland Larson served as chairperson this year. Many events will fill the remaining half of our Anniversary year. The Herb Society of America is holding its National Meet- ing here in June and the Foundation Board will be serving refresh- fents to the group when they have a Renaissance luncheon on the 15th. On Saturday morning, June 30, the first Hugo Reid Round- up will be held in the courtyard and around the Hugo Reid Adobe. This is an exclusive membership party for the family with plans for an early California breakfast and games for all ages. Mem- bers of Las Voluntarias will be there to take guests on special walking tours. Last summer the volunteers planned and present- ed a Storytelling Hour for children aged four to seven. Their mothers were given tours of the Historical Section at the same time. It will be repeated this year and become a part of a pro- gram of summer classes for member’s children. A new class, Arboretum Discovery, will teach children the why, what, who, and how of the Arboretum—an inside view leading to a greater understanding of what an Arboretum is, what it does, and who it serves. All Foundation members will be invited to a free 25th birthday party on Friday night, July 13, under a full moon, from 8:00 to 10:00 p.m. We hope everyone will come and eat a piece of our cake. The second Queen Anne Frolic will be on the night of September 28 with dining and dancing on the mall, rides in vintage machines, and tours through the Queen Anne Cottage. In cooperation with the Creative Arts Group of Sierra Madre there will be a Garden Art Show in the Home Demonstration Gardens the weekend of October 20 through 22. The artists will have their work displayed in the garden setting and there will be demonstrations of ceramics and welding. The Foundation is also giving a luncheon and program in October for the Pasadena Arts Council. Two field trips to the Channel Islands by members this year proved to be so popular they will be re- peated next year. We are also planning field trips to other botanic gardens. With all the new events and classes the Foundation Office has become a hive of activity. Business in the Gift Shop has been brisk. Dolores Hubbell, Executive Secretary, Hilda Sademan, Secretary, Edna Kettle. Bookkeeper, and Ruby Miller and Betty Seliger in charge of Gift Shop sales, have been working overtime oe ut to keep up. To relieve the load a corps of volunteers now works daily in the back room, answering telephones, typing, making addressograph plates, anything. Upstairs in the Peacock Pa- vilion Coffee Shop business is also increasing:as the word spreads about the good food, superb view. and fresh flowers on every table (a volunteer project). The Foundation has donated to staff participation in a baseball league (they won a trophy) and the staff Christmas party. In March the Board hosted a luncheon for all the volunteers and members of the staff. Two major projects, the Meadowbrook area and the new Information Center. were made possible through funds raised by the California Arboretum Foundation in coopera- tion with Las Voluntarias with matching funds from the County of Los Angeles. Both projects are under way but behind schedule because of the rain. The volunteer program continues to grow under the able leadership of Mrs. Leland Larson and new under- takings are the Garden for All Seasons, summer classes for mem- ? and youth groups. Trees in five gallon containers were grown and given to 1024 responding organizations, involving more than 35.000 children in Arbor Day ceremonies. The Board of Trustees is especially grateful to Las Voluntaries for helping to raise funds through the Baldwin Bonanza and Queen Anne Frolic to offset cuts made in the Department budget and to provide matching funds for capital projects. The Director. Francis Ching. has brought us many honors. During the past and present years he was invited to speak at a symposium sponsored by the University of Washington Arboretum Foundation. to the Annual Meeting of the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta in Seattle, to a seminar at Long-wood Gardens. to the Western Chapter of the International Shade Tree Conference and Street Tree Seminar, and will be pri- mary speaker at the Centennnial Celebration of Beal Botanical Gardens at Michigan State University this month. At his invitation the American Association of Botanical Gardens and Arboreta held its first meeting in Southern California, April 15 through 19. with headquarters at the Arboretum. Mr. Ching coordinated all the plans for the five days of the meeting and it was the most successful in the history of the organization. Mr. Ching has also received considerable praise from the County oe ee Board of Supervisors for holding the line on the budget for the Department while at the same time increasing services to the public by twenty fold i in public information, education, and in- volvement with the community. Mr. Ching says “The Arboretum Is For People” and it is—a place for learning, for enjoyment, for service, for conservation, and for participation The metamorphosis at the Arboretum in the past months is a story of tremendous growth and the main characters of the story are every volunteer—how did we ever get along without them?— every member of the staff, every member of the Board of Trustees, and every member of the California Arboretum Foundation. Just think of how the roles overlap! Alice Douglas, President CALIFORNIA ARBORETUM FOUNDATION JANUARY 1, 1972 THROUGH APRIL 2, 1973 DONORS Akebono Bonsai Society of So. Calif. Present members are encouraged to find new supporters for the Foundation and to con- sider enlarging their own contribution by volunteering their services and increasing their membership classification.
