which, it haz been sed, wil kreait az grait a revolooshon in edeukai- shon az the Edeukaishon Akt. Heer ar siks praktikal sujestionz :

(1) Eu kan kolekt signateurz for the petishon. The Sekretan wil be glad tu send on formz : werkerz ar erjentli needed.

(2) Eu kan ryt leterz tu the loekal pres. Ignorans on the mater iz stil wydspred. The publik kan not be toeld enithing too ofen.

(3) Eu kan sujest tu the Komiti ov eur loekal lybrari the akwizi- shon ov a feu werks on Speling Reform. Prof. Lounsbury'z English Speling and Speling Reform iz a seutabel werk. THE PYONEER myt aulso be sent tu lybrariz, and kopiz ov the Petishon displaid if memberz wood maik arainjments.

(4) Eu kan giv a paiper on Speling Reform at eur loekal debait- ing sosyeti. *

AROEZ FOR THE SPELING REFORMER'Z KWIVER.

A KORESPONDENT reesentli aaskt for a list ov werdz hooz speling faulsifyd ** the derivaishon. Such a list iz, ov kors, eusful in argeument. It wood be imposibel tu giv an egzaustiv list in the paijez ov THE PYONEER, but wun or too egzaampelz mai saiv dikshonari reserch :

Scion. The werd ' ' scion " iz an egzaampel ov the eroeniusli inserted c foloing an inishal s. TheMidel English formz wer " sion, sioun, cion, cyun," or " cien " (in Shakespeare, Lodge, ets.), from the oeld French sion, or cion. This iz konekted with the French verb scier (rytli spelt sier in Cotgrave), from Latin secare, tu kut. It haz nuthing whotever tu doo with the Latin scindere, az the speling helps tu sujest. Introosiv c befor k is komon, az in " nickname," whair it helps tu obskeur the etimoloji from " an eke-name," and kood be omited with grait advaantij.

Knowledge. The Midel English form had no d. Thus, Chaucer haz " know- lege " in Canterbury Tales, 12960 (spelt " knoweliche, knowleche " in the Six- text, ed. B. 1220). And in the Cursor Mundi, 12162, it iz spelt " knaulage, knawlage, knauleche, knowleche." The sufiks -lege iz a laiter form ov -leche, and the werd iz an English wun, with Scandinavian sufiks (the erli form ov the -leche being a weekening from the Scandinavian sufiks -leke). This iz boroed from Icelandic -leikr or -leiki, which iz kognait with the Anglo-Saxon substantiv -lac, which apeerz az -lock in "wedlock." Hens the sufiks -lege standz tu the werd " knowledge" or " knowlege " az the sufiks -lock standz tu " wedlock," and the uter wont ov justifikaishon for the introozhon ov the d iz plainli aparent.

GREECE AND SPELING REFORM. 67

Foreign. The insershon ov the g iz meeningles, the oelder spelingz being "forein, foreyn," or "forain, forayne," ets. (without the g). The formz "foreine" and " foreyne " oker in Chaucer'z translaishon ov Boethius, b. ii, pr. 2, lyn 851. The Midel English form kaim from the oeld French forain (stil without the g), eksplaind by Cotgrave az " forraine, strange, alien," from the Latin fo raneus, aplyd tu a kanon hoo iz not in rezidens, or tu a traveling pedlar It iz kleer that this meeningles g shood be abandond.

Delight. A mis-speling, posibli on analoji ov " light, alight, blight, plighi slight," and perhaps eeven "twilight," and "lightning," ets., which ar korekt. The Midel English formz being " delit " (subst.) and " deliten " (verb), and the oeld French delit or deleit, the modern English speling shood be "delite." The verb okerz in Chaucer'z Canterbury Tales, Groop E, 997 (Clerk's Tale).

Sprightly. The euzheual speling iz hoelli rong, the werd being from French esprit "sprite" (subs.), which iz euzheuali spelt korektli without gh. This mai be wun ov the werdz inflooenst, lyk " delight," bi the speling ov such werdz az "light, plight," ets. The Midel English formz ar "sprit, sprite," and " spryte," but boeth spelingz, with and without the gh, oker in vairius pasijezov Shakespeare in derivativz ov " sprite."

Aghast (i.e. •" struk with horor "). Mis-spelt and ofen misinterpreted. Rytli spelt "agast." Shakespeare korektli has " gasted " for " frightened " in Lear II, lyn 57, a werd nou ofen mis-spelt " ghasted." The Midel English form iz " gasten," tu terify, ov which the paast partisipel iz boeth " gasted " and "gast." "Agast," the korekt form, apeerz in Wyclif's Bible (Luke xxiv, 37) ; in Chaucer'z Canterbury Tales, 2343, " So sore agast was Emelye " ; aulso in Legend of Good Women, Dido, 245 in Ancren Riwle, paij 212, az wel az in Milton. The werd " agast " iz alyd tu " gost " (" ghost "), the form ov which haz aulso been mis-spelt by the introdukshon ov a perfektli grateuitus Ji. This pervershon, which woz deu tu Caxton, kaim from hiz foloing a Dutch fashon (lyk that ov ryting gh for hard g befor e and / in Italian) , which woz aafterwerdz abandond. It iz tu this saim inflooens that we oe the mis-spelingz ov " ghittern, gherkin," properli " gurkin ") ; and meni uther werdz begining with g wer for- merli spelt with gh.

Tongue. The speling with ue looks az if it had been formd on the fauls analoji ov the French langue. The word iz English, houever, and kumz doun tu us from the Anglo-Saxon " tunge," which woz stil " tunge " or " tonge " in Midel English az in Chaucer'z Canterbury Tales, and woz spelt " tong " by Spenser.

GREECE AND SPELING REFORM.

r\R. H. BOURGEOIS, wun ov the Belgian skolarz at prezent rezident in England, kyndli sendz us a short reveu ov " The ' Bulletin ' ov the Edeukaishonal Klub " (Athens) a voleum which woz sent tu us sum tym agoe, but which haz Jain dormant oing tu the difikulti ov f ynding a reveuer with a nolej ov modern Greek.

The * Bulletin ' [he ryts] kontainz, amungst uther artikelz, a veri interesting kontribeushon by Prof. Triantaphyllides on Greek :orthografi.

It iz noen that the Greek ov tudai euzez too langwijez wun ,he speeks, the uther he reedz and ryts. The former haz been praktikali diskarded for aul literari perposez sins the politikal renaisans ov Greece subsekwent tu the revoleushon ov 1821. Sum progresiv ryterz hav atemted tu introdeus it intu the literari feeld,

68 THE PYONEER.

moestli for edeukaishonal perposez, the prezent sistem being the veri sors ov iiiterasi in Greece. The diferens between boeth tungz iz praktikali az grait az the diferens between Latin and Italian. " The ' Bulletin ' ov the Edeukaishonal Klub " iz riten in the popeular langwij, and strongli advokaits its euniversal adopshon.

The ofishal langwij ov Greece, which shood properli be termd Arkaiik Neo-Greek, iz nuthing but an artifishal revershon tu the klasikal tung, the oeld gramar and dikshon having been substiteuted, az a hoel, for thoez ov the spoeken langwij.

A number ov modern werdz hav been retaind, houever, az being not so eezili replaisabel by klasikal boroingz, but thai hav been maid tu konform tu the jeneral roolz ov the klasikal orthografi, and, thair preevius orthografi being vairiabel, the kaios haz bekum graiter, so that meni such werdz hav too, thre, for, and mor formz in ryting. In hiz artikel, Prof. Triantaphyllides sujests a skeem tu giv them a staibel orthografi.

Anuther important kwestion iz aksenteuaishon, for which veri komplikaited roolz ar given, aultho everi orijinal werd noez nun at aul. Prof. Triantaphyllides sujests yther tu diskard it kompleetli (az iz the kais in Italian) or tu mark it oenli when it duz not afekt a given silabel (az in Spanish).

It iz indispeutabel that the prezent sistem aut not tu be main- taind, az it konstiteuts haaf, and mor perhaps, ov the difikultiz ov the Greek orthografi without eni koresponding advaantij, sins the sens iz praktikali never kondishond by the aksent. I shood, for my oen part, advokait raather the Spanish sistem than kompleet supreshon, konsidering that utherwyz moest peepel wood not be aibel tu reed korektli, az the aksent iz an esenshal element in Greek pronunsiaishon, and kan not be inferd from the spoeken langwij, which, az I sed abuv, iz aultugether diferent.

It iz tu be noeted that the "Bulletin" kontainz, on paij 293, a noet, under the tytel " The Simplifikaishon ov Orthografi in Eng- land," az foloez :

At laast a moovment for a simplifikaishon ov orthografi haz begun in England. It woz not menshond in Mr. Trian- taphyllides' artikel, but it iz konveenient tu sai a feu werdz about it heer. We hav reseevd the therd edishon ov a booklet, Simplified Spelling : an Appeal to Common Sense, whairin, by meenz ov kloesli reezond and praktikal argeuments, such az wun kan antisipait from Englishmen and Americanz oenli, a tolerabli radikal reform ov English iz advokaited.

APEEL TU BIZNES MEN. 69

APEEL TU BIZNES MEN.

A PRAKTIKAL SUJESTION.

IV /fOEST speling reformerz ar agreed that a simplifikaishon ov English speling wood be a gain tu British traid. Lord Bryce haz emfasyzd this in veri definit termz. A German neuspaiper haz boested that German komershal seupremasi kan never be impeund bekauz ov the German sistem ov edeukaishon, unhamperd by the nesesiti ov teeching an antikwaited sistem ov speling and ov kount- ing. Germany, Spain, Holland, Italy hav aul reformd thair sistemz ov speling; France haz aulredi takeld the kwestion. Let biznes men aask themselvz why, aloen amung aul the grait naishonz ov Europe, Britain elekts tu ty such a milstoen round her nek.

THE KLAIMS ov EMPYR.

Aafter the Wor neu feeldz ov komers wil be oepen tu us if we hav the strength and enerji tu pozes them. Our relaishonz with our koloniz and dependansiz wil ofer sum veri delikait problemz. We wont tu simplify theez az far az posibel. Hou beter kood we doo su than by inkreesing the fasilitiz for interkomeunikaishon ? In South Africa, whair Dutch speling haz been simplifyd, the Dutch langwij iz ousting the English ; in Canada thouzandz ov forinerz ar drifting intu groops, thus ading tu the difikultiz ov guvernment ; in India kountles numberz ov Indianz ar sufering seerius los by our persis- tens in retaining this inkeubus. Amung frendli naishonz the Japa- nese oepenli lament our obdeurasi.

Hou kan we rernedi such a stait ov thingz : hou set the reform going ? From our Euniversitiz we kan not, from thair naiteur and konstiteushon, look for substanshal help in the mater ov institeuting chainjez. If we wish for proegres we must maik a frontal atak on the Edeukaishon Authoriti. But, whyl we ar dooing this by meenz ov our petishon and by eksperiments in skoolz, we aask biznes men, men ov inishiaitiv, men ov resors, tu help us in the taask ov prepairing publik opinion for chain j. Our skeem klaimz tu be a rashonal soleushon ov the difikulti ov ko-ordinaiting sound and simbol, but it duz not lai klaim tu eni majikal pouer ov konverting the British publik tu speling reform az a propozishon. That kan be dun oenli by egzortaishon, eksplanaishon, and egzaampel. It iz in this werk that we aask ernestli the help ov biznes men.

Hou TU SET THE REFORM GOING. We sujest that thai introdeus intu thair printing and korespondens

70 THE PYONEER.

ten simplinkaishonz "program, tho, altho, thru, thoro, catalog, thruout, kolor, labor, jewelry." Sum ov theez spelingz ar aulredi komon (" The Times " euzez " jewelry "), and, whyl aul prepair the wai for chain j, nun ar so drastik az tu arouz hostiliti.

The Sekretari wil be glad tu heer from eni member hoo iz wiling tu inishiait theez chainjez. It iz a simpel but praktikal wai ov helping on a moovment that dezervz wel ov everi paitriot. Aulredi several biznes men in our moovment hav maid a begining on theez lynz our speling haz been introdeust intu prospektusez, lekteur-bilz, and cheks. But we aask for mor volunteerz. Hoo wil help us ?

TURKEY AND HER SP&LING SISTEM.

VY7E doo not euzheuali regard the Turks az pyoneerz in edeukaishon. Yet thai hav forjd ahed in the mater ov reforming thair speling. Mr. H. Wood, korespondent ov the American United Press in Turkey, telz us that the Turks, hoo ar dreeming ov an independent Turkey in Europe, hav, despyt the distrak- shonz ov \vor, set tu werk tu maik thair langwij a seutabel instrooment for aul nashonal perposez. Thai hav, for egzaampel, prohibited French, euzd hithertu in meni Guvernment Departments, and Latin, euzd veri larjli by farmasists. But it iz the pozitiv syd ov thair polisi which iz moest interesting. Az the Arabic karakterz in which Turkish iz riten reprezent veri imperfektli the soundz ov the langwij, and az much latiteud in speling haz thairfor been aloud, a Guvernment Komishon haz taiken in hand the taask ov regeularyzing the Turkish sistem.

A SKOOLMAASTER'Z EKSPEERIENS.

TYM WAISTED IN KOREKTING SPELING ERORZ.

vois from the skoolroom shood aulwaiz komaand atenshon in the proseedingz ov such a Sosyeti az ourz. The foloing iz the akteual ekspeeriens ov a hed maaster in wun ov the larjest London skoolz. He haz been draun intu our ranks not by eni ov the rekrooting eforts ov the Simplifyd Speling Sosyeti, but throo the stres ov biter ekspeeriens :

In sending heerwith my subskripshon tu eur Sosyeti, I shood lyk tu giv a konkreet egzaampel ov the waist ov tym involvd in lerning speling so ofen insisted on in mor jeneral termz by reformerz, which mai be ov interest tu reederz ov eur magazeen. It iz the rekord ov a klaas ov boiz nou aproeching the aij ov forteen.

When thai enterd our department, everi wun ov them kood ryt a stori or a leter fonetikali if aloud tu doo so, and, apart from insidental korekshonz, wood hav needed but litel ferther instrukshon in hou tu spel ; yet heer iz thair rekord :

THE EFISHENSI OV THE YUNGER STEUDENT. 71

Speling (akording tu ofishal tym-taibel), 364 ourz ; ad at leest 50 per sent, for korekshonz ("keeping in "), 182 ourz. Toetal, 546 ourz.

Tu this must be aded at leest anuther 500 ourz, for a porshon ov neerli everi leson in everi subjekt must be spent in lerning tu spel neu werdz, and everi riten eksersyz in histori, jeografi, English kompozishon, and so on, involvz speling korekshonz, so that theez partikeular boiz devoeted oever a thouzand ourz a hoel yeer ov skool lyf in lerning hou not tu spel fonetikali, or, raather, in trying tu lern, for sum ov them ar stil veri shaiki.

Reesentli, too, I hav diskuverd anuther valeu for fonetik speling its efekt on pronunsiaishon. The klaas referd tu abuv konsists ov London boiz, hooz slipshod kokniizmz seemd absolootli ineradikabel, in spyt ov everi efort tu reform them, until sum ov thair koloekwializmz wer, skornfuli, riten fonetikali on the blakbord : " rouner korner " for " round the korner " and " outnyorl " for " out in the haul."

Under our prezent iregeular sistem the speling ov a werd haz so litel relaishon tu its pronunsiaishon that it iz kwyt posibel tu be aibel tu ryt wel and tu speek badli at the saim tym. The rezult ov " outnyorl " haz been serpryzing and led wun tu beleev that not oenli wood a grait saiving ov tym rezult from a reform in speling, but that thair wood enseu a grait ryz in the standerd ov pronunsiaishon in London, at eni rait. Eurz faithfuli, (Synd) E. J. ORFORD.

192 Upland Road, East Dulwich, S.E.

This Jeter, with its plain staitment ov plain fakts, iz a stryking indytment ov our prezent sistem. At forteen the London skoolboi haz obviusli no tym tu waist, yet heer we hav several duzenz drild and " kept in " for about a thouzand ourz yeerli aul that the antikwairian taists ov the feu mai be plakaited.

THE EFISHENSI OV THE YUNGER STEUDENT.

A KORESPONDENT hoo haz been studiing sum ov our statistiks on the saiving ov tym that myt be efekted by the eus ov rashonal speling telz us that it iz not dezyrabel tu saiv tym on edeukaishon. " The longer eu taik tu edeukait a chyld, the beter for him." We ar aulwaiz pleezd tu konsider eni novel kontra argeument, az the batel-kryz ov our adversariz hav by this tym lost thair ferst freshnes. But our korespondent's argeument haz, we feer, litel mor than novelti tu komend it. It iz not the tym that iz spent on edeukaishon, but the method ov spending it that kounts. The Aneual Konferens ov the American Euni- versitiz took up this veri point at thair laast meeting, when Prof. Lowell braut forwerd statistiks tu shoe the seupeerior keennes and efishensi ov the yunger steudent. The rezults ov an inkwyri at Harvard intu the relaishon ov the aij ov entering kolej tu kon- dukt and skolarship ar veri interesting.

Thai shoed that the boiz hoo enterd yunger wer beter behaivd and beter skolarz than the oelder wunz. The too kervz wer veri stryking. The kerv ov

72 THE PYONEER

marks went doun and the kerv ov sensheur went up az the aij inkreest. We found that the yunger men wer reprimaanded for smaul ofensez, but thair seerius ofensez wer feuer. On the uther hand, thai wer much beter skolarz. Thair ar too elements in the rezult. Wun ov them iz selekshon. The boi geting intu kolej at seventeen iz lykli tu be mor industrius and bryter than the boi hoo duz not paas hiz egzaminaishonz until nynteen. But I doo not think that akounts for the hoel diferens. Thair iz an aproepriait aij for eech kynd ov instrukshon, and it wood seem that, tu obtain the fool benefit ov jeneral instrukshon, the averij aij ov entering kolej shood be yunger than it iz in America tudai.

Wun myt, with fairnes, aply theez werdz tu the edeukaishonal siteuaishon at hoem. Tu speed up edeukaishon by remooving grateuitus difikultiz and konsentraiting on the real wunz iz shoorli the best method ov kombating diletantizm and sekeuring efishensi.

THE LOJIKAL FAKULTI 4N CHILDREN.

TV/TEN I sykolojists hoeld that the lojikal fakulti in children under twelv iz week, aultho tu whot degree this iz deu tu wont ov training iz not kleer. Wun ov the best instansez ov the prezens ov the reezoning fakulti in a yung chyld woz given by an anonimus ryter in an edeukaishonal paiper. Too litel gerlz hoo had been pre- zented with an apel tu divyd wer diskusing the method ov partishon, eech evidentli mistrusting the uther'z sens ov fairnes. At laast wun chyld hit on a sistem enshooring ekwiti with pees. " Wun ov us wil divyd," she sed, " and the uther wil chooz."

An ekselent stori ov the reezoning fakulti az aplyd tu speling (whair, alas ! thair iz les skoep for it than in eni uther braanch ov heuman lerning) iz toeld by Mis Ethel Gavin, ov Wimbledon Hill Skool. A litel boi, hoo had been at sum painz tu improov hiz speling, had riten wun dai in his eksersyz book the ekstraordinari formz, l wnife " and " knok." Theez, it woz diskuverd, he intended for " knife " and " know." He fernisht himself a reezonabel eksplanaishon. Boeth the k and the w (on the teecher'z authoriti) wer sylent leterz. Whot did it mater, sins thai wer not pronounst, whair thai wer plaist ? Wun feelz sori that such a chyld shood hav no mor reezonabel sistem than the prezent on which tu eksersyz that deduktiv fakulti he undoutedli pozesez. Hiz reezoning rekaulz that ov Voltaire'z dauter on being toeld that " bread " must be pronounst " bred." Obviusli b-r-e-a-d did not spel " bred." Obviusli, aulso, tu the English it woz a mater ov indiferens hou far the pronun- siaishon ov werdz departed from thair speling. Why not kaul it pain, and hav dun with it ?

KORESPONDENS. 73

KORESPONDENS.

BARD LETERZ.

R. HENRY DRUMMOND, Rydal Mount, Hetton - le - Hole, S.O., ryts :

I hav been interested in Ser William Ramsay 'z leter on "Bard Leterz." Several yeerz agoe I su jested the saim devys tu Ser Isaac Pit- man, and he set up sertin mater in the " Fonetik Jernal," akording tu my ydea. Uther peepel hav hit upon the saim method, but the plan duz not gain much suport. The komon objekshonz ar az set out by the Editor. The disadvaantij ov having tu run oever whot eu hav riten and ad sertin stroeks, insted ov ryting the werdz az a hoel, iz sertinli a strong argeument against bard stroeks, aultho I hav never found it erksum tu dot i'z and kros t'z, az sum peepel doo ; nor shood I fynd it trubelsum if Ser William'z devys wer in eus. I prezeum moest ryterz run oever whot thai hav riten. When dooing so the stroeks kood be aded. The strongest argeu- ment that waiz with me iz the disfigeurment ov the printed paij. This iz faital tu the adopshon ov bard leterz.

THE EUS OV V AZ A VOUEL SIMBOL.

MR. JOSEPH HOGARTH, Johannesburg, hooz speling we retain, diskusez the klaimz ov v az the best reprezentaishon ov the short sound ov oo.

Az a konsonant it duz not sujest a vouel sound ; but, owing tu its apeerans and shaip, it duz strongli, veri strongli, sujest the leter u, and the leter u su jests the short sound ov oo. In uther werdz, the averij reeder, on seeing a v in thoaz werdz in which he haz hithertoo aulwaiz seen a u, or utherwyz aseumz it tu bee intended for wun. In eether kais he iz led tu giv the korekt sound.

Thus, the folowing formz, " joyfvl, hoapfvl, pvt, pvlpit, pvsh, shvd, wvd," ets., ar aulmoast faks-similiz ov " joyful, hoapful, put," ets., espeshali when the typ euzd iz in italiks. No wun hooz .atenshon iz konsentraited on the subjekt-mater ov hiz reeding wil trubel tu noat the diferens. If it iz admited that v iz a seutabel simbel for this sound, then its kumparison with the prezent syn oo wil indikait which iz the beter reprezentaishon. Thus, kumpair the folowing sentens, riten ferst with oo reprezenting boath the long and short soundz, and agen with oo and v, for the long and short respektivli :

With regard tu Mr. Gundry'z remarks on the oo kwestion, it duz not seem tu me ov such veri grait importans tu distingwish between the long and short soundz. In this konekshon Y hav of en noetist that (amung utherz) the Scotch and Irish freekwentli revers theez soundz, and pronouns (e.g.) "foot" with the long vouel sound and "boot" with the short! It iz a mater ov konsiderabel importans tu fynd eni set ov werdz or fraizez in which internashonal diskushon kan taik plais. This iz veri disapointing tu the ordinari member ov the S.S.S., hoo, not unnateurali, konsoelz himself, in the fais ov opozishon and ridikeul, by the thaut ov hiz distingwisht asoeshiaits, if I mai so

kaul them. I remember a frend ov myn tu hoom I had riten in S.S., and sent the Sosyeti'z prospektus, replying : "Wei, if eu er, eu sertinli doo so in good kumpani !" But if the "good kumpani " konsider speling reform ov so litel im- portans that thair advokasi ov it iz not eeven noen tu thair byograferz, the valeu ov thair naimz az Vys-Prezidents ov the S.S.S. iz les than it myt be tu poot it myldli.

And this bringz me tu my point, which iz that the best wai tu kaul atenshon tu, and tu spred a nolej ov, speling reform iz by aulwaiz euzing simplifikai- shonz in wun'z oen korespondens .

If the ofis-bairerz and aul the memberz ov the S.S.S. wood maik a point ov dooing this, the keumeulaitiv efekt wood in tym be tremendus. Partikeularli so in the kais ov korespondens in the pres, and if the pres wil insert korespondens kontaining sertin simplifikaishonz in speling from unnoen individeualz lyk myself az thai hav repeetedli dun thai wil sertinli insert that ov wel noen men. Troo, Simplifyd Speling mai be sed tu be oenli, az yet, a tentativ skeem, but the mor obvius simplifikaishonz, such az thoez tu which I refer, ar not tentativ. Thai must form part ov eni mezher ov reform and be permanent. I meen simplifikaishonz such az "ar, aktiv, det, dout, engin, hav, program, tho, wer." A foot-noet tu wun'z leter, tu the efekt that the unkonvenshonal speling iz intenshonal, iz aul the eksplanaishon nesesari, or wun ov the Sosyeti'z litel adheesiv laibelz bairing the werdz " Simplifyd Sj^ling," tu which kan be aded " partial," wil serv the perpos. An ouns ov egzaampel iz werth a pound ov preesept, and if a man, or wooman, wil persist in euzing ever so feu simplifikai- shonz in speling, the fakt wil not be oeverlookt by hiz byograferz or forgoten by hiz frendz, and the kauz ov speling reform wil be so much advaanst thairby. I am not for a moement weekening in my beleef that in a kompleet skeem ov reform lyz the eventeual remedi for our egzisting ilojikal orthografi, but wun kan aulwaiz euz parshal reformz, but veri rairli the kompleet S.S. skeem.

If theez jentelmen had euzd eeven a feu simplifikaishonz in the speling ov theez leterz, whot a splendid stroek ov werk thai wood hav dun for the kauz ov speling reform mor than kood be dun by fifti leterz in the provinshal pres from' Eurz, ets.,

Simplifyd Speling at ferst glaans seemz lyk a krooel slauter ov shaidi treez and pet berdz and the famili dog ; but if wun wil look at the mater kaamli he wil see that it iz no destrukshon at aul, but iz reali an improovment on the oeld hous, a triming ov the hej, a mending ov aul the oeld fensez, a maiking ov a ternpyk whair thair haz been too long a mud-roed, and the hanging ov a neet gait whair our faatherz werwoent tu let doun hevi barz. We aut tu maik a distinkshon between meer feelingz and rcezonabel feelingz, for if we hav permited ourselvz tu bekum so atacht tu an oeld wooden plou that we wood not ekschainj it for the best steel wun, we ar not personz ov deep feelingz, but raather ov deep baibihood and steupiditi. The inkwyring mynd wil be aibel tu form a noeshon ov whot the Erl'z pronunsiaishon woz from the foloing stori relaited by himself tu Boswell :

The maaster ov a shop in London whair he woz not noen sed tu him : " I supoez, ser. eu ar an American." "Why so, ser ? " sed hiz lordship. " Bekauz, ser," eksplaind the shop-keeper, " eu speek nyther English nor Scotch, but sumthing diferent from boeth, which I konklood iz the langwij ov America."

Boswell z Aksent.

That Boswell woz at sum painz tu perfekt hiz pronunsiaishon he himself aknolejez. He had lesonz, he telz us, from a faimus aktor ov Drury Lane Theatre, hoo plaid at Edinburgh, and aulso from oeld Mr. Sheridan. Karakter- istikali, he saut Johnson'z opinion ov hiz aksent, and, tho the saij'z komendai- shon woz given sumwhot gardedli " Ser, eur pronunsiaishon iz not ofensiv "- Boswell eksprest himself az " priti wel satisfyd with the konseshon." The problem ov loekal aksents ternz up fairli regeularli in diskushonz on speling reform, but it iz a difikulti which, lyk meni anuther boegi, disapeerz az soon az wun kumz tu grips with it. The foloing testimom from a Scotch member mai be interesting :

" I hav never had eni real difikulti with the Simplifyd Speling skeem, aultho my aksent iz ov the North. The skeem seemz tu me tu talk the graitest komon denominaitor for aul the aksents from John o' Groats tu Land'z End. It iz troo that I hav had tu lern tu poot a long a in 'maaster' and ' raather,' whair the nateural man in me wood poot a short ; but I am by no meenz sori that my atenshon shood be thus kauld tu the euzijez in a form ov English which iz, aafter aul, the English ov the bulk ov edeukaited peepel."

Mr. Willett's ydea iz, we feer, too simpel and sensibel tu be imeediaitli pop- eular. Lyk the reform ov speling, it evoeks mistrust throo its veri simplisiti and obviusnes. A ryter hoo had been viziting the hoem ov an artist-frend sed that hiz ferst impreshon ov the hous and its apointments woz wun ov dislyk. Everi- thing woz so simpel, so obvius, so unornamented that the efekt woz bizarre in the ekstreem. Az he livd in the hous, he began tu see that the artifishialiti lai in hiz preekonsepshonz ov thingz and not in whot he sau. Kuming from the outsyd werld whair simplisiti iz mistrusted and onest plainnes despyzd, he had mistaiken the direkt for the indirekt, the nateural for the grotesk. Hou ofen hav we not herd simplifyd speling kritisyzd for its kompleksiti ! But the kritisizm reboundz aulwaiz on the hed ov the kritik.
