Dear Alumnus;

We are happy to bring you this announcement of the Honorary Degrees to be conferred at the One Hundred Ninth Commencement of Lycoming Col- lege, Sunday, June 2, 1957.

In honoring these distinguished leaders in American life, Lycoming Col- lege brings significant honor upon herself. We are happy, therefore, to be able to bestow this recognition upon our chosen honorary alumni.

This special Newsletter will serve also as an early reminder and a special invitation to you to return to the Lycoming College campus for the Commence- ment Activities. The regular Alumni Day events will be scheduled on Satur- day, featuring the Alumni Luncheon at noon. Bishop W. Ear! Ledden will de- liver the sermon at the Baccalaureate Service in Pine Street Methodist Church Sunday morning. At the Commencement in the afternoon, Harry E. Humph- reys, Jr., will give the address.

We anticipate a very outstanding Commencement in which we will graduate one of the largest classes in our history. I do hope you will plan to be with us.

H. E. HUMPHREYS, JR. Doctor of Humanities (HH.D.)

H. E. Humphreys Jr., Presi- dent and Chairman of United States Rubber Company, was born in Philadelphia, Oct. 24, 1900, and was educated in the public schools of that city.

Immediately after his grad- uation from high school in Feb., 1918, at the age of 17, Mr.

Humphreys went to work as a clerk in the offices of the

Pennsylvania Railroad.

In 1920, he left the railroad to become a stenographer for the Toledo Scale Company. In 1922, he transferred to the Alan Wood Iron and Steel Company. In the some year, he enrolled in the Wharton School of Finance evening classes at the University of Pennsylvania. He attended as often as his business activities would per- mit and in seven years earned enough credits to entitle him to a certificate of proficiency from the Wharton School.

In 1924, he joined the Philadelphia public accounting firm of Price, Waterhouse and Company as an auditor. He remained there until 1927, when he joined the Chris- tiana Securities Company, Wilmington, Del. He event- ually became secretary and assistant treasurer of that company.

In 1938, Mr. Humphreys was elected a vice president, director, member of the executive committee, and mem- ber of the finance committee of United States Rubber Company. On Jan. 1, 1942, he was given the additional responsibility of heading the finance committee of the company. Later in the some year, he was elected vice- chairman of the executive committee. He became presi- dent and chairman of the executive committee Jan. 1, 1949, and chairman of the board Sept. 1, 1951.

He is a director of the Great American Insurance Com- pany, N. Y.; Dominion Rubber Company, Ltd., Montreal, Can.; Chemical Corn Exchange Bank, N. Y.; Latex Fiber Industries, Beaver Falls, N. Y.; Terminal Warehouses, Ltd., Toronto, Can.; Rubber Manufacturers Association, and is immediate past president of the Economic Club of New York. He is a trustee of The Mutual Life Insur- ance Company of New York and a member of the Nat- ional Industrial Conference Board.

Mr. Humphreys is a member of the University of Penn- sylvania Club of New York City, the Undine Barge Club of Philadelphia, The Links Club, The University Club, New York; The Metropolitan Club of New York and The Pennsylvania Society, of which he is honorary post presi- dent. He is a trustee of the University of Pennsylvania. In 1953 he was awarded an honorary degree of Doctor

of Lows from that university. In 1956 he received from Bryant College on honorary degree of Doctor of Science in Business Administration.

On May 1, 1928, Mr. Humphreys married Myrtle Fell Rusling of Philadelphia. They have two children, Mrs Robert T. Nugent of New Rochelle, N. Y., and George a student at University of Pennsylvania. The Humphreys reside in Scorsdole, N. Y., where they are communicants of the Episcopal Church of St. James the Less.

Mr. Humphreys has token on active interest in the community life of Scorsdole. For several years he was a member of the board of trustees of Scorsdole. In 1947 he was appointed mayor upon the death of Samuel E. Darby Jr. In March, 1948 he was elected to serve out the term, which expired March 31, 1949. His name ap- pears in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.

GEORGE R. LAMADE

Doctor of Letters (Litt. D)

George R. Lamade, President of the Grit Publishing Company was born in Williomsport, Pennsylvania, April 24, 1894.

Following his education in the public schools of that city, he became a student in the School of Journalism at Colum- bia University and University

of Missouri

In December, 1916, he left the University of Missouri and volunteered in the French Army Transport Service, Reserve Mallet and in 1918 became a 1st Lieutenant U. S. Army serving with the A.E.F. He was awarded the Croix de Guerre.

Following his return to the United States in June, 1919, Mr. Lomade joined his father and family in the Grit Pub- lishing Company which publishes GRIT, a national week- ly small town newspaper. In 1922 he became vice-presi- dent, in 1936 general manager, and in 1938 president.

He is o director for the Pennsylvania Power and Light Company and the Darling Valve Manufacturing Co. Active in community affairs in Williomsport, he served as Chairman of Voluntary Unemployment Relief 1930- 32; chairman of the Red Cross Disaster Committee dur- ing the flood of 1936; Commander of the County and City Defense Council control centers, 1942; president Williomsport School Board, 1931-51; a member of the Board of Directors for the Williomsport Hospital, Will- iomsport Foundation, YMCA, YWCA; on active member of the Pennsylvania Highway Planning Commission, Pennsylvania Newspaper Publishers Association, Associ-

ated Press and American Newspaper Publishers Associ- ot.on. Mr. Lomode is also a member of Phi Gamma Del- ta, Sigma Delta Chi, and Iota Lomba Sigma.

On August 14, 1919, he married Margaret Coryell Hayes (deceased May 9, 1948) . They hod five children, Dietnck II, John Robert, James Hays, Sara Lamade White, and George William. On November 18, 1950, he married Norma Winters Hendren. The Lamades reside in Williamsport and are members of the Lutheran Church. His name appears in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.

WALTER EARL LEDDEN

Doctor of Divinity (D.D.)

Walter Earl Ledden, resident Bishop of the Syracuse area of the Methodist Church, was born on March 27, 1888, in Glassboro, New Jersey.

A graduate of Pennington Seminary in 1907, Mr. Ledden received his Ph. B and A. M. from Dickinson College, Car- lisle, Pennsylvania. He received his B. D. from Drew Theological Seminary and continued his graduate study at Drew University. In 1927 he received the honorary de- gree D.D. from Syracuse University and in 1944 the honorary degree LL.D. from Dickinson College.

In 191 4 he was ordained to the ministry of the Metho- dist Episcopal Church and served pastorates at Goodwill M. E. Church, Rumson, N, J.; First M. E. Church, Bel- mar, N. J.; State Street M. E. Church, Camden, N. J.; Broadway M. E. Church, Camden, N. J.; Richmond Ave- nue M. E. Church, Buffalo, N. Y.; Mathewson Street M. E. Church, Providence, R. I.; and Trinity Methodist Church, Albany, N. Y. In 1944 he was elected Bishop and assigned to the Syracuse area.

Bishop Ledden serves as President of the Council of Bishops, 1956-57; Chairman of the Interboard Commit- tee on Missionary Personnel and the Interboard Commit- tee on Materials for Training in Church Membership, Vice-President of the Board of Evangelism and the Com- mission on Worship; member of the Board of World Peace and the Board of Missions. He was a delegate to the Second Assembly of the World Council of Churches in Evanston, Illinois, 1954.

He serves on the Board of Trustees of Drew University, Syracuse University, Folts Home for Aged, Williamsville Home for Children, and Clifton Springs Sanitarium. Memberships in organizations include Torch, Masons, Newcomer, Phi Beta Kappa, Alpha Chi Rho, and Theta Phi.

In 1913 he married Lida Iszord. They hove two child- ren, Howard I. and Mrs. Bruce Cordon. The Leddens re- side in Syracuse, New York.

FRANK E. MASLAND, JR. Doctor of Humonlties (HH.D.)

Frank E. Masland, Jr., has been President of C. H. Mas- land and Sons, Carlisle, Penn- sylvania, manufacturers of rugs and carpets, since 1930. He is President of the Carlisle Homes Company and a Direct- or of the First National Bank of Mt. Holly Springs, Pennsyl- vania. Past Chairman of the Board of the Carpet Institute, currently a member of the Board of Trustees, he is Regional Vice President and a member of the Board of Directors of the National Asso- ciation of Manufacturers, a Director of the Pennsylvania Manufacturers' Association and on July 1, 1956 he was appointed by the Secretary of the Interior to a 6 year term on the Advisory Board on National Parks, Historic Sites, Buildings and Monuments.

Mr. Masland is Vice President of the Board of Trustees of Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pennsylvania, his alma mater, and is a former trustee of Shippensburg State Teachers College, Shippensburg, Pennsylvania. He is a member of the Board of Governors of the Westminster Theological Seminary, Westminster, Maryland, and a Trustee-ot-Large of the Foundation for Independent Col- leges, Inc. A trustee of the Allison Methodist Church of Carlisle, Pennsylvania, he serves on the National Execu- tive Committee of the Methodist Church for Overseas Relief.

He is a member of the Racquet Club, the Notional Re- publican Club, 0 member of the Republican State Finance Committee and Alpha Chi Rho Fraternity.

Mr. Masland has made four trips down the Colorado River. These fast-water journeys have made him eligible for membership in the exclusive order of Colorado River Rats. Other journeys into the jungle fastness of Panama, the San Bias Archipelago, the Darien Jungle, the Gala- pagos Islands, and the Florida Everglades have made him a member of the Explorer's Club of New York. He is also a member of the Ocean Cruising Club of England, the Camp Fire Club, the Sierra Club and was elected to Fel- lowship in the American Geographic Society.

Out of his hobby, which is lecturing and writing about his various travels into strange places, have come dozens of articles and a standard work on the Colorado River, "By the Rim of Time."

JOHN ELMER PERSON, SR. Doctor of Letters (Litt.D. )

John Elmer Person, Sr., Pub- lisher and President of the Sun- Gazette Company, graduated from Williamsport High School in 1907. He attended Lehigh University 1908-10 where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta.

He was a reporter, city edi- tor, and editor of the Sun, and in January, 1936, became Publisher and President of the Sun Gazette Company.

Mr. Person has had a close association through the years with Lycoming College. He became a director of Dickinson Seminary on June 11, 1928, and served as Treasurer of the Seminary and junior College Boards. He was a member of the committee that made the orig- inal study to decide on the adoption of the junior Col- lege program. Michael Bond Rich first confided in Mr. Person when he proposed changing the Seminary into a junior college; and Dr. John W. Long first consulted with him when considering the transformation of Dickinson Junior College into a four-year college.

He has served as President of the Pennsylvania News- paper Publishers Association and the Pennsylvania Mem- bers of the Associated Press; a member of the American Society of Newspaper Editors and the Pennsylvania State University Chapter Sigma Delta Chi; formerly a director of the Pennsylvania State Chamber of Commerce; senior vice-president, Pennsylvania State Sabbath School Asso- ciation and Council of Religious Education.

Mr. Person's activities in Williamsport have touched many areas. He is vice-president of the Board of Trustees of the James V. Brown Library; member of the board of managers of the Williamsport Hospital; director of the West Branch Bonk and Trust Co.; member of the admin- istrative committee, Williamsport Foundation; former president of the YMCA and Williamsport Community Chest; member of the board of managers of the Wild- wood Cemetery; served as chairman of financial cam- paigns that raised almost $2,000,000 in Williamsport.

A member of Pine Street Methodist Church, Williams- port, he has held official positions in that church since 1912. Mr. Person is a member of John F. Laedlein Lodge No. 707, F&AM, Williamsport and a 33rd degree mem- ber of Williamsport Scottish Rite Consistory. His name appears in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA.
