MERNER-PFEIFFER LIBRARY lErJNESSEE WESLEYAN COLLEGE ATHENS, TN 37303

This edition of Nocatula is designed to remind Wes- leyan students about specific moments in time. The 1988-89 year was an eventful one. The Olympics were held in Korea. American-Russian relations were ad- vanced by visits between the leaders of these coun- tries. George Bush became the forty-first President of the United States. American pride was restored with a successful space flight. Three whales stranded in ice brought the world together in hopes for their rescue. Armenia was devastated by an earthquake, and a hurri- cane struck several islands in the Caribbean. Every- one's favorite Disney character, Mickey Mouse, cele- brated his sixtieth birthday. The year was . . . EVENT- FUL!

Tennessee Wesleyan College students had their own "Moments in Time" in the 1988-89 year. Wheth- er it was a trip to Europe, meeting famous baseball heroes, giving that special person a token of love (or being that special person) or getting married, each person had his or her own moment in time. But "Mo- ments in Time" don't have to be major events. Com- pleting an application for graduation, doggin' it, or getting together for a dorm party are also moments that students will cherish. CHERISH!

Spirit Week, October 3-8, 1988, at Tennessee Wesleyan College was definitely SU- PER FUN!! The participation from thie ^^ students and faculty was greater than

ever before! Everyone seemed to enjoy all the competitive events; there was something for every- one! Here are just a tew of the entertaining events: Ice cream eating contest, lip sync contest, dress for dinner, the Bon Fire, and the Pep Rally.

The different organizations on campus competed for points throughout the week. The great response from all groups really helped make Homecoming 1988, "one of a kind!" This year the Women's Basketball team and the Men's Baseball team tied for first place in the competitive events. Each team was awarded $50.

(Top, F, L) Even the "King of Rock 'n Roll" made it to the Bon Firel (B, L) With the full moon behind him. Tim Spitler has turned into "Dracula " (Top. The 1988-89 Tennessee Wesleyan College Homecoming Queen was Sharmin Roberts, a senior from Deca- tur, Tennessee. Sharmin majored in mass communications and was a co- captain of the '88-'89 Lady Bulldog Basketball team. Sharmin's escort for Homecoming Day was Clint Baker, a senior from Casselberry, Florida. Su- san Laws, the 1987-88 TWC Home- coming Queen, presented Sharmin's crown during halftime festivities at the football game.

The Tennessee Wesleyan Home- coming Queen was selected by a pop- ular vote of the entire student body in a two election process. The Court was selected first when all students voted for four representatives, one from each class. The individual who received the most votes in each class was that class's representative on the court. A second election was then held with the students voting for one Homecoming Queen from the four representatives on the court. The person who received the most votes was then declared the Homecoming Queen.

From the starting gun at the morning Alumni Road Race to the final cleanup after the dance, Homecoming Day 1988 was a busy, fun-filled event. Activities included the road race, an alumni baseball game, an awards luncheon, the football game, and the annual dance. On this page, Casey Burris and Jayne Wallin complete the run, the cheer- leaders provide halftime entertainment, the team hits the field running, old friends get together during the game, and everyone dances the night away.

GREAT

Actress Natalie Ross visited the Tennessee Wesleyan College campus during fall semester with a one-woman show. "The Belle of Amherst" was a play about the poet Emily Dickinson. Ms. Ross also took time to meet with various English classes so students could learn more about Emily Dickinson as well as about the life of a soap opera actress. Ms. Ross is a member of the cast of "All My Children."

k

WITTY

Each year the Tennessee Wesleyan Col- lege English students present their interpre- tation of the subject area that they are studying. The skits are educational, enter- taining, and witty. Fall 1988's presentations were no exception. Where else could you see Dr. Folks moonlighting as a pizza deliv- ery man or Elvis reincarnated on Townsend stage? The choices are limited only by the imaginations of the English students.

SPECIAL

Happy Feet were abundant on the Tennessee Wesleyan College Campus during the 1988-89 year. Fall semester was kicked off with a street dance. Homecoming gave students and alums the chance to kick up their heels. The season of Christmas presented another excuse to step out on the campus. As spring semester arrived, the sweet- hearts danced together on Valentine's Day. SPECIAL!

(Top) "You mean we have to draw straws for a partner?"; (Above) Tony Lotti sings his heart out for Kim Simmons: (Mid- dle) "If you love me baby, you'll smile . , . "; (Near right) Louisa and Greg are really jammin'; (Far right) Mr. and Mrs. Nickels from the class of 1948 joined the students at the Homecoming Dance. AND COULD THEY EVER DANCE!

46

ICY

The Student Government Association sponsored a ski trip to Sugar Mountain, North Carolina in January. Two vans were loaded with 28 students and chaper- ones. On Friday night, weather was unseasonably warm. By Saturday morning, however. Old Man Win- ter had arrived. One of the vans was stranded at the foot of the mountain. Since roads were too icy for the shuttle buses to run, the skiers had to ski (or slide) down the mountain to the ski lift. Winds were harsh, and skiing was rough, but the trip was still fun for everyone.

(Left) Dawn Morrison and Kinsley Edge strike a pose while resting from skiing; (Below left) Wendy Ashburn was the only casualty with her stitched lip; (Below middle) Paul Cicotti and Doug Burns hit the ski lift for another trip to the top of the slopes; (Below right) Kenny Mitchell and Barry Beeler are trying to figure out how to put all of the skis in the U-Haul; (Bottom) Helen Thornton, Beth Chesnutt, and Sherry Underwood were confused. They brought bathing suits for water skiing instead of snow skiing.

SUPERB

Tennessee Wesleyan College students are re- quired to attend a specified number of convocations each semester. The fall schedule included a wide selection of musical artists, speakers, and student presentations. Sometimes the convocation pro- grams were a welcome surprise because the stu- dents actually enjoyed them. SUPERB!

(Top) Susanna Matthews and David Hauser from Artwood Winds Plus performed on Townsend stage in November. (Above) Becca Hyder, Janine Helle, Leslie Plemons, and Cindy Turner posed for a picture before their poetry reading convocation; (Above right) Donald Davis shared lunch and storytelling techniques vi/ith stu- dents, faculty, and friends of TWC; (Below) Guitarist Stan Bum- garner played at Trinity in September; (Right) Internationally known storyteller Donald Davis visited campus for the Fall Lecture Series.

FIT

Each year the Physical Education Majors and Minors Club sponsors a Wellness Day on campus. This year students, faculty, and staff members went through multiple evaluations to determine their overall body fitness. Partici- pants were able to have cholesterol screening and chiropractic evaluations. One of the popu- lar stations this year included the opportunity to interact with a computer for a lifestyle evalu- ation. Participants were able to learn if they were . . . fit.

T.

The Sweetheart Game, sponsored by Sigma Kappa Sorority, is becoming a Wesleyan tradition for the Valentine season. People who were couples at the time competed in question/answer sessions about their relationships. Tony Weaver and Kellie Stuckey were winners of one session, Beth Ches- nutt and Kenny f^itchell won another session, and Debbie Wright and Scott Brown were winners of the final round. In February, their moment in time was . . . together.

MEMORABLE

Tennessee Wesleyan's newest student organization, AASU, present- ed a program commemorating Black History montti. It was informative with) presentations about contributions that Blacks tiave made to soci- ety; creative with a student-written Rosa Parks skit; entertaining with lip synch acts and student talent; and inspirational with a rendition of the "I Have a Dream" speech.

The Tennessee Wesleyan College Drama Department presented three plays during the year. The Halloween production was "Dra- cula," The fall production, "Night of January 16," was presented at the courtroom at City Hall. During the spring "Prisoner of Second Avenue" came to the Townsend Stage.

EMBRACEABLE

And the winner was Bobby Jean Earls! Alpha Xi Gamma sorority's Mr. TWC Contest brought an evening of fun and laughter when some of the loveliest individuals on campus competed in gowns and dresses as well as in talent. The win- ner's rendition of "Embraceable You" stole the hearts of the judges and the audience. First run- ner-up was Laverne Tony Weaver who did a hula, and second runner-up was Krystal Chris Clunan who twirled a baton. Other contestants were Billy Joe Kirby who sang, K. Mitchell who was another singer, Thomasena Lloyd who did an interpretive dance, and Raquel CD. Walsh who shared the beauty secret of how to remove facial hair.

alented

The 1989 All-Sing was sponsored by the Inter-Sorority Council. Four acts were in small group competition: An- gela Lane (first), Robert Tennyson (second), Roger Higgins, and Anita Head and Beth Loftis. There were also four acts in large group competition: Alpha Xi Gamma (first), SGA Barber- shop Quartet (second), Sigma Kappa, and Men's Soccer.

'/■^■

DIVERSE

Spring semester brought a diverse selection of con- vocations to TWC students. Bishop Goodson was on campus as a Staley lectur- er. The Covenant players were here from California, and authors like Robert Drake also visited the col- lege. Students were in charge of one of the pro- grams, and there were plays and concerts and oth- er special events.

EXCITING

During Spring semester SGA sponsored two exciting trips for students. On an even- ing excursion a group traveled to Knoxville to catch a Cherokees hockey game. When warm weather arrived, students went on a weekend jaunt to Opryland. Everyone had the opportunity to have an exciting time.

COUNTRY

The PEMM Club sponsored a Heri- tage Hoe-Down in the spring. Everyone was invited to come to the gym and do some folk and square dancing. Steps ranged from the Virginia Reel to the Amos f^oses, and there was even some real hay decorating the gym.

DILIGENT

Countless hours and numerous pizzas went into the preparation of the Nocatula. DILIGENT is not an appropriate adjective. It could have

The 1989 edition of Who's Who Among Stu- dents in American Universities and Colleges con- tained the names of ten Tennessee Wesley an Col- lege students who had been selected as national outstanding leaders. Selection was based on aca- demic achievement, service to the community, leadership in extracurricular activities, and poten- tial for continued success.

Heritage Day was celebrated spring semester. Curwood Witt, Jr., a Madisonville attorney and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Holston Conference Colleges, delivered the Heritage Day ad- dress. The prestigious Sullivan Awards were presented to four individuals in recognition of their dedication to humanitarian ser- vice and their spiritual ideals. Sharmin Roberts and Dan Smith were the student recipients of these awards, and Mildred Hitch and George Price were the community leader recipients. These awards are named in memory of Algernon Sydney Sullivan, a New York attorney, and his wife. The Sullivans devoted much of theirtime and fortunes to promote educational opportunities in the South, and only a limited number of colleges are allowed to present these awards.

The Lockmiller Teacher of the Year Award was also presented on Heritage Day. A committee of students, faculty, and administra- tors selected Tom Oneal as the recipient of this award.

RAW

The 1988 football season was one of fiighi hiopes. Coach David Bankston was looking at a possible six wins, but the Bulldogs were raw, lacking in experience. Bankston had sixteen freshmen start- ing with one senior. Even though things did not turn out quite as expected, the Bulldogs fought hard and were competitive in ail of their games. Bankston looks forward to next season saying, "If we continue to improve like we have in the last two years, you can expect to see a very fine Bulldog team." 1988 Record: 1-9

Each Tennessee Wesleyan student had the op- portunity to be a "star athlete" on campus. Intra- murals were offered in volleyball, basketball, ping-pong, tennis, and Softball. Varsity athletes were not allowed to compete in their respective sports in an effort to make the competition fair. Jama Delaughter was recognized as the Intramu- ral Athlete of the Year. Although competition was sometimes intense, everyone had fun and wel- comed the change to take a break from the books.

INTENSE

Finals week was a busy, emotional time for all of the graduating seniors. Students had to take tests and finish up projects. There was graduation rehearsal, followed by a picnic sponsored by the Alumni Association. Since it was a rainy weekend, graduation ceremonies had to be moved to the gymnasium and the picnic was in the cafeteria. Baccalaureate was Friday night in Trinity Church, and it was followed by a President's reception in the cafeteria. Students had to find time to exchange gifts and to say their last good-byes. For many graduates, their last requirement to meet was to return their cap and gown after the ceremonies.

The 1989 edition of the Nocatula is dedicated to Holland Vibbert and Stan Harrison. Both members of the Student Services staff give many hours of their own time to help the students at Tennessee Wesleyan.

Holland Vibbert, the Assistant to the Dean, spends many hours with the cheerleaders at practices and at games. She is also responsible for job placement ser- vices for students. This year she helped make the ca- reer fair "Opportunities '89" available to Wesleyan stu- dents.

The Dean of Students Stan Harrison also serves as the women's basketball coach and the tennis coach. He is one of the administrative officers of the college. Among his job responsibilities are dormitory life, disci- plinary procedures, and convocations.

No matter how busy you may find these two people, you can count on them to be dedicated to their job, and more importantly, to the Tennessee Wesleyan stu- dents.

REFLECTIVE

r

"My most memorable moment at TWC was when I arrived in ttie fall before classes started. I was sad, lonely, and very bored before I met anyone. But as the year went on, I met many lifetime friends and experienced the advantages and pleasures of a small college things that I would not trade for anything in the world."

JOHN IVORY McCLOUD

"My most memorable time at TWC was find- ing out that the riverboat was really going to move the night of the formal."

KOURTNEY PAYNE

"Road trips on the soccer team, friends and the closeness, Andy, being forced to attend convocations, the food"

WENDY ASHBURN

"Having a snowball fight at 2:00 a.m. in the parking lot. There must have been 100 stu- dents outside, and even the local police were spotlighting. It was a blast! Honorable mention has to be getting to shoot Coach Geeter to win the 'Gotcha' game."

ANGELA LANE

"In the short time that I have been here at TWC, the thing that stands out most in my mind is the people and the genuine caring and support that has been shown to me."

JAN BECKWITH

"What I will remember most from my moment in time at Wesleyan are the people I've met and, more importantly, the life-long friends I have made."

ROGER HIGGINS

"Meeting all of my wonderful friends and get- ting the chance to make a lot of precious memories, most of which were good! Also, mistaking fruit punch for orange juice."

CANDY KIRKLAND

"... attending Don Windham's psychology classes."

JAYNE WALLIN

"The time Paul Gaffney dived after a loose ball at Lee College and knocked Coach Dod- gen out of his seat and into the bleachers"

ELSTON BEAL

"The things I appreciate most about my time at TWC are the close friendships that devel- oped and the fact that the faculty really cares about the students, not only in an aca- demic sense but on a personal level. These factors have made a big difference in my life at TWC."

MIKE HOOD

"Scoring my first collegiate goal"

RYAN LIBBY

"My most memorable moment at TWC was . . . well, it's been that kind of year."

BETH DONEGAN

"My most memorable moment at TWC was February 23 when a group of black students came together and organized the first Black History program. This event was the first step toward the establishment of an Afro- American Student Union which became an official campus organization in the spring of 1989."
