I OCCASIONAL PAPERS OF THE LIBRARY I SEP 1^1985 \ Woods Hole, Mass. CALIFORNIA ACADEMY OF SCIENCES No. 143, 21 pages August 29, 1985 Catalog of Non- Asteroid, Non-Mollusk Type-Specimens in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, California Academy of Sciences By Daphne Gail Fautin Department of Invertebrate Zoology California Academy of Sciences Golden Gate Park San Francisco, California 94 118 and Barbara Weitbrecht Department of Invertebrate Zoology California Academy of Sciences Golden Gate Park San Francisco, California 94 11 8 ^C^DEA^^^^ ^^DED\'^'^' fo^ SAN FRANCISCO PUBLISHED BY THE ACADEMY Catalog of Non- Asteroid, Non-Mollusk Type-Specimens in the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, California Academy of Sciences Daphne Gail Fautin and Barbara E. Weitbrecht Introduction A general catalog of type-specimens held by the Department of Invertebrate Zoology, California Acad- emy of Sciences (CAS) was published in 1966 (Stasek 1966a). This was supplemented by catalogs of solen- ogasters (Stasek 1966b), cephalopods (Smith 1974) and ostracods (Cohen and Chivers 1976). The CAS Department of Geology published catalogs of its type and voucher holdings of Recent and fossil cephalopods (Zullo and Hertlein 1970), echinoderms (Zullo and Hertlein 1972) and brachiopods (Roth 1972). Much material has been acquired by the Depart- ment of Invertebrate Zoology (CAS-IZ) since these catalogs were published, through normal collection growth, transfer of Recent specimens from the De- partment of Geology and acquisition of type collections from other institutions, notably the University of Cal- ifornia at Berkeley, and Stanford University and its Hopkins Marine Station. A catalog (Smith 1978) of the Stanford University paleontology type collection, which contained some Recent specimens, was com- piled before the material was transferred to CAS in 1977. All invertebrate type-specimens in CAS-IZ, except dry moUusks, have been recurated within the past three years. As part of recuration, the practice of having two series of catalog numbers, one for type-specimens and one for non-types, was abandoned, necessitating assignment of new catalog numbers to all type lots (Dunn 1981). Due to the large volume of material and the im- portance of making lists of holdings available to the scientific community (International Code of Zoological Nomenclature Recommendation 72D), three type cat- alogs are being issued by CAS-IZ. That on asteroids, which also includes non-type material cited by W. K. Fisher in his monographs on the group, has recently been published (Chaffee and Weitbrecht 1984). Pub- lication of the mollusk volume is anticipated within a year, when the dry type-specimens have been com- pletely recurated. National Science Foundation grant DEB 79-08522 assisted with the preparation of the first two volumes, and grant DEB 81-21511 is sup- porting the malacological section. This catalog, containing 492 specimen lots rep- resenting 316 species in 14 phyla, is arranged in sys- tematic order Phylum, class and order sequences fol- low those in Synopsis and Classification of Living Organisms (Parker 1982). All lower taxa are arrayed alphabetically. In case of multiple lots of the same species, primary types are listed before secondary types. Within a category, order is by catalog number. Species are listed by the name under which they were described, followed by author and date. Beneath each name is the citation of the original description. Below that are listed all type-specimens of the taxon held by CAS-IZ. Remarks about the specimen lot, such as preservative and the number of specimens, are en- closed in parentheses after the catalog number Other catalog numbers by which the lot may have been iden- tified in previous publications follow in parentheses. Abbreviations used with these numbers are: G — CAS Geology catalog number; GTY— CAS Geology type series number; IZ — CAS Invertebrate Zoology type series number; PMS — University of the Pacific, Pa- cific Marine Station catalog number; SSB — S. S. Berry catalog number; SU — Stanford University cat- alog number; UC— University of California, Berkeley, catalog number The last line in each entry is the general collection locality. Our heartfelt thanks go to Sheri Dunklau for the hours she spent at the word processor in the interests of this project, and to Phoebe Grigg for all the type sheets she completed. Jeanne Lynch also made im- portant contributions to completion of the catalog.
