The Society of Colonial Wars was duly incor- porated pursuant to the Laws of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts 29th April, 1893.

FEB 9 1^16
Society of Colonial Wars
in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
The Preamble to the Constitution of the General Society of Colo?iial Wars is as follows :
Whereas, It is desirable that there should be adequate celebrations commemorative of the events of Colonial History, happening from the settle- ment of Jamestown, Va., May 13, 1607, to the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775 :
Therefore, The Society of Colonial Wars has been instituted to perpetuate the memory of those events, and of the men, who, in military, naval, and civil positions of high trust and responsibility, by their acts or counsel, assisted in the establish- ment, defence, and preservation of the American Colonies, and were, in 'truth, the founders of this nation. With this end in view it seeks to collect and preserve manuscripts, rolls, relics, and records ; to provide suitable commemorations or memorials relating to the American colonial period ; and to in- spire in its members the fraternal and patriotic spirit of their forefathers ; and in the community, respect, and reverence for those whose public services made our freedom and unity possible.
Extracts from the By-Laws^ Rules of the Committee on Membership ; etc.
MEMBERSHIP.
Any male person above the age of twenty-one years, of good moral character and reputation, shall be eligible to membership in the Society of Colo- nial Wars, who is lineally descended in male or female line from an ancestor :
(i) Who served as a military or naval officer, or as a soldier, sailor, or marine, or as a privateersman, under authority of the Colonies which afterward formed the United States ; or in the forces of Great Britain which participated with those of the said Colonies in any wars in which the said Colonies were engaged, or in which they enrolled men, from the settlement of Jamestown, May 13, 1607, to the Battle of Lexington, April 19, 1775; or
(2) Who held office m any of the Colonies be- tween the dates above mentioned, either as
[a) Director-General, Vice-Director-General, or member of the Council, or legislative body in the Colony of New Netherlands ;
{b) Governor, Lieutenant or Deputy Governor, Lord Proprietor, member of the King's or Govern- or's Council, or legislative body in the Colonies of New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Delaware ;
{c) Lord Proprietor, Governor, Deputy Governor, or member of the Council, or of the legislative body in Maryland and the Carolinas ;
{d) Governor, Deputy Governor, Governor's As- sistant, or Commissioner to the United Colonies of New England, or member of the Council,
body of Assistants, or legislative body in any of the New England Colonies.
Initiation Fee and Dues.
The initiation fee shall be five (5) dollars. The annual dues shall be five (5) dollars, payable on or before the fifteenth day of December of each year; provided, that any member who shall have been elected during the last three months of the fiscal year shall not be required to pay the annual dues for the current fiscal year. The payment at one time of fifty (50) dollars shall constitute a life membership and exempt the member so paying from initiation fee and annual dues. Any member, at his election to membership, or subsequently, who may contribute one hundred dollars to the "permanent fund " of the Society, shall be exempt from the payment of annual dues ; and this exemp- tion shall extend in perpetuity to his lineal success- ors in membership from the same propositus, one at a time, who may be selected for such exemption by the Society, said perpetual membership to be transmitted by the holder, subject to the approval of the Society.
The fiscal year shall begin on the sixteenth day of December, and close on the fifteenth day of December in each calendar year.
The non-payment of an initiation fee within six months of the election of a candidate shall make such election null and void.
The member who shall be in arrears one year in payment of annual dues shall be liable to suspen- sion or expulsion.
All ancestral claims must be registered with the General Society, for which a fee of one dollar is
charged for an original application, and fifty cents for each supplemental record.
Requirements.
Every application for membership shall be made in writing, on blanks furnished by the Secretary, on the written request of a member of the Society, subscribed by the applicant, and approved by two members of the Society over their signatures, to whom the applicant must be known. Applications shall be accompanied by proof of eligibility ; and such applications and proofs shall be referred to the Committee on Membership, who shall carefully investigate the same and report at the next meeting their recommendation thereon. Members shall be elected by ballot at a meeting of the Council, after report by the Membership Committee ; but a nega- tive vote of one in five of the ballots cast shall cause the rejection of such candidate.
Every applicant for membership shall declare upon honor that he has not failed of admission in any other State Society, and that he will use his best efforts to promote the purposes of the Society, and will observe the Constitution and By-Laws of the same.
Blank forms, either for original or supplemental applications, are obtainable only of the Secretary.
Members requesting blank forms for original applications from the Secretary, shall do so in writing, stating for whom they are intended, to- gether with their opinion as to the personal quali- fications of the candidate for membership.
Applications must be made out in duplicate, and should be sent to the Genealogist, Mr. Walter K. Watkins, i8 Somerset Street, Boston. They must
be accompanied in each case with the proper fee, ^11.00, before they can be considered, viz., one dollar for the original application for member- ship, to be included in the remittance for entrance fee ($5.00) and dues (^5.00). For supplemental applications the fee is fifty cents each. All cheques should be made payable to the Treasurer, Mr. Abijah Thompson.
Encyclopaedias, town or other histories, and genealogies, will only be accepted as furnishing sufficient proof of service when original authorities, documentary or of equivalent value are quoted in them. Proof of service, or genealogy, based upon papers owned by private individuals, or upon such public records as are not easily accessible, should be substantiated by fac-simile copies of the same in duplicate.
References only to the index of ancestors in the publications of the General Society, or State Societies other than Massachusetts, will not be accepted as furnishing sufficient evidence, though they should be given. The General Society Reg- ister, however, is recognized as an authority for all claims as passed by the Massachusetts Society.
In every case full volume and page references must be given, and when quoting from books in print, the title, date of publication and number of edition (if other than the first) should be stated.
Claims based upon service in the so called mili- tary companies of the various townships of Ply- mouth Colony, under date of August, 1643, as found in the General Court Records, Vol. VIII., pp. 187-202, in Pierce's " Colonial List," etc., quoted from the above, will not be accepted, inasmuch as they are only " The Names of all the Males that are able to beare Armes from xvj. to 60 Yeares, wthn
the seural Towneshipps," and as such do not represent rosters of military companies, but merely lists of able-bodied men likely to be drawn upon in case of necessity.
Allegations of fact based upon tradition cannot be considered.
All applications must be sworn to before a Notary Public, Justice of the Peace, or other proper officer, and be sealed by such officer if he have a seal.
Insignia.
As supplemental to the directions of Article 17 of the Constitution, the General Council respect- fully recommends, for the sake of uniformity, the following for the guidance of members of the Society throughout the United States.
The rosette should be worn in the left lapel of the coat, but never in the overcoat. Where mem- bers belong to several orders or societies having rosettes, choice should be made of one rosette ; more than one should never be worn at a given time. It is proper to wear rosettes with ordinary house or street dress. No rosette of any order or society should ever be worn at the same time with insignia of the same society.
Members of the Society may wear the insignia on the left breast as prescribed in the Constitution. But it is recommended that when the insignia of this Society is used together with the insignia of other orders or societies, the regulations of the United States Government for army officers be understood as applicable to civilians also, as fol- lows: "The badges are to be worn on the left breast of the coat, the tops of the ribbons forming a horizontal line, the outer end of which shall be from two to four inches (according to the height
8
of the wearer) below the upper line of the shoulder." It may be added for information, that the govern- ment regulations further provide that " the ribbons be suspended from a bar of metal passed through their upper ends, and attached to the coat."
Persons who are or have been State officers en- titled, under the Constitution, to wear the insignia suspended from a ribbon around the neck, are recommended for the dignity of the Society to so wear it. But this ribbon should be used only with a dress suit or dress uniform. In the case of a dress suit the insignia should be drawn up to within an inch of the tie. In the case of a uniform it should hang close to the opening of the military collar.
Persons who are or have been General officers, or hold or have held such State offices as entitle them to wear the broad ribbon across the breast, are recommended for the dignity of the Society, to wear it. But this ribbon should be used only with a dress suit or dress uniform. In case of a dress suit, it should be worn under the waistcoat ; in case of a uniform, over the coat. It is recommended that the neck ribbon should not be used at the same time with the broad ribbon. When the latter is worn, the insignia may be suspended from the left breast, or appended to the broad ribbon where the latter crosses the hip.
The General Council respectfully points out that the prestige and influence of the Society much de- pends upon the enthusiastic loyalty of the members everywhere to those great principles which look for origin to American colonial history. In the multi- plication of patriotic societies representing other periods and having different aims from those for which we stand, it is deemed peculiarly important
that every member should possess, and should use on all suitable occasions the emblems and insignia of this Society. It is hoped that members who may not have procured insignia already, will do so. It is desirable that care be exercised and effort be made by all members to see to it that, in whatever makes for public recognition, this Society shall stand second to none.
