ey OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER Volume 13, Number 6, Page 22 j top about 30 years ago and remaining almost totally barren to this day. Our ship, the Alpha Helix, was until recently the flag vessel of the Scripps research fleet > and was well equipped for investigations at sea. Althought our program was primarily oriented toward the collecting of algae and invertebrates for natural products chemistry research, my 14 errs a cet arr aboard were very cooperative in extending their activities to help ina survey of the opisthobranch population from these and the more inshore Tres Marias Islands. Although we circled the islands from seaward, it was evident from observation, charts and enormous surf that intertidal or inshore collecting wouldn’t prove.feasible. Thus, most of our work was confined to offshore snorkel and SCUBA. In all, I was able to record only a rather disappointing 21 species cone sine of 123 specimens. Still, 5 of those are undescribed and one, an elysoid sacoglossan, probably represents a new genus with affinites to both Caribbean and Indo-Pacific relatives." - Jim Lance. From Bob Burn: "The first two weeks of April, I spent with Fred Wells of the Western Australian Museum. Six days were taken up with field work in the Albany area of southern Western Australia, where we collected on soft bottoms, among seagrasses and on reef platforms with satisfying results. Albany is situated on King George Sound, an area visited and collected by Quoy and Gaimard in October 1826. These Frenchmen described several bubble shells from that locality -- namely Liloa brevis, Akera bicincta, Adamnestia arachis and Bulla australis | (now B. quoyii Gray). We were fortunate enough to find all except the third species. Tornatina | apicluata Take also has its type locality in King George Sound, and a number of living specimens were found. Two range extensions are worth mentioning. Aplysia gigantea Sowerby 1869 was found 400 km further south and east than normal, and Crimora multidigitalis Burn 1957 was found 2500 km further west than previously reported." - Bob Burn. From Kikutar6 Baba: "In March I visited New Zealand and Sydney for a short time. Fortunately I was able to speak with Dr. M.C. Miller of the Auckland University at his residence, and Dr. R.W. Rudman of the Australian Museum at his office. In May I tried again to study Melibe of Japan rather extensively. Possibly the most common form of our Melibe is referable to Melibe pilosa Pease, 1860 in its wide sense, as some of the previous authors suggested. The types of M. papillosa (de Filippi, 1867) and M. vexillifera Bergh, 1880 seemed to be based both on juvenile specimens of M. pilosa Pease, 1860 (s.l.). Itis | hoped, however » that the pilosa specimens from Hawaii will be studied in more detail by the | local workers." - Kikutaro Baba i CURRENT EVENTS: The Los Angeles Oceanic Society’s Coastal Monitoring Conference, Seasons in the Sea, will t held Saturday, June 13, 1981, at the Chace Park Community Building Mindanao Way, Marina Del Key, California. PAPER Range Extensions of Several Opisthobranchs from Humboldt County, California by ‘ William Jaeckle Recent publications (Behrens, 1980; M and Nybakken, 1961) have contributed signifi- cantly to our Knowledge of the biology of opisthobranch molluscs from the Nortneast Pacific. However, because cof the paucity of publisned accounts from northern California and Oregon, the zoogeograpnical information within tnese works is, in several cases, inaccurate. Historically, studies of opisthobranch molluscs have centered around two geographical regions: from Bodega Bay, California to Baja California, Mexico, and from northwest Washington to northwest Britisn Columbia, Canada. The reporte distributions of the species present in the littoral zone reflect the intensity of study in these regions. Unfortunateiy, few data are available from the area between these two regions. This paper presents new distributicnal data for ten nudibranch species from Humboldt County, California (figure 1). to > 3 igure a Ye SY ae Seceay os ee em TPR nee Humboldt County, California Volume 13(7):24 | Collection Sites A Palmer’s Point, Patrick’s Point State Park = (41007 °21"N: 124009 °32"W) B Abalone Beach ; (41007 20"N; 124009 “32"W) ! He is reviewing Gosliner & Griffiths paper on eolids. ; From Eveline Marcus (June 1981): "Professor Alexander Barash, Department of Zoology, Univer-= sity of Israel, 155 Herzl Street, Tel Aviv, Israel, is working on the fauna of their Red Sea (and Mediterranean). He has a lot of well preserved ecephalaspideans and wants to find someone to study them and describe them -- and their soft parts!!! They can be published in Israel. I have had a great time with Gosliner and South African Pleurobranchaea with surprising results; they must be prepared for publication after my return. I hope to get further facts in Marseille next week with Claude Poizat and more on later stations." From Eveline Marcus (September 12, 1981): "Back from my trip to flee the Brazilian winter, I report: 2. June, Cape Town with the Gosliners; three days dissecting Pleurobranchaea at the S.A.M. to compare with the Western Atlantic. Evidently one new species. Three days to Knysna, no collecting, wild surf on the rocks. Some days in Israel; Pleurobranchaea witn Al Barash, Tel Aviv. A week in Marseille with Claude Poizat, holiday; there was no material from Vayssiere, all in Paris (Bouchet sent some). Friends in Switzerland; Luise Scnmekel in Mtlnster, Pleuro- branchaea, i got the finest specimen i have seen, but have not dissected it yet. Pleuro- branchaea for me, and many more to be looked at and classified to the genus. One must dissect every specimen to determine the species. Met Rosalie Vogel - Cumbee of Gloucester Point. Finally a week in Miami with Robert Work, also a holiday without molluscs. Back home heaps of letters and reprints, and the invitation to the "Encontro Brasileiro de Malacologia" in Rio, 1-4 duty which I could not attend. have not seen my "systematics of the genera of the Ascoglossa", due April in the Journal of Molluscan Studies, Suppl. 10. Now I am back to my Pleurobranchaea paper with much new material, but I hope to get it ready for publication in the Bolm Zoclogia 1982. Here popody is interested in opistnos, except when they find one and want it classified, but even that is rare. Bivalves are studied, and in the Museum, Pulmonates." From Dave Behrens: 1) Our 5 week trip to Canada was terrific. Sorry to have missed the WSM meeting, but this trip was badly needed. Lots ef branch collecting, both intertidally and subtidal. It was most rewarding to see in person the marked differences in flora and fauna between central California and the waters up to the 50th parallel. While at Friday Harbor Marine lab we met Drs. Alison and Roger Longley. They are working on nervcus system control of reproduction in branchs. Alison is very inter- ested in direct development in branchs, as she has beem working witn the new undescribed direct development species of Haminoea from Lucas Island, Washington. This species is currently being described, I understand, by Drs. Fu-Shian o 7 +] Volume 13(7}3:25 Chia and W.B. Rudman. Nearly identical to H. virescens, Dr. Chia was the first to note its direct develocment. While ca ig in the Pacifie Rim Provin ] Park, near Ucluelet, Vancouver Island a poste: caugnt my eye. In advertizing daily nature hikes for campers, the naturalist used the leader "Come stalk the elusive nudibranch." 2) The Channel Islands Research Program (CIRP) is looking for qualified divers interested in surveying Channel Island opisthobrancis. I believe all expenses are covered. Monthly cruises are made on the R/V Cormorant out of Catalina Marine Science Center. For information write or phone: Dr. Jack Engle, Catalina Marine Science Center, P.O. He first worked with Hermissenda but had problems with feeding them non-cnidarian foods. He is now working with Aeolidia. Steve and a ccileague Mark Conlin are also preparing a paper for publication on feeding in Aglaja inermis." Dave Benrens returned about 11 October, froma trip to Mexico, including L.A. Bay. Weatner was not too good on his trip. I hope to have some type of collection report before too long. Jennifer & I saw Ron Long in Vancouver, EB.C., Canada, on Sunday, Cctober 18th. -Ron is still taking great pictures. pril an has a gorgeous view from nis front window over Vancouver harbor. We tried, unsuccessfuily to contact Sandra Millen but sne was not at home. We spent a good evening with Pete & Sue Oringer, in Eureka wnile on our way home. Don & Kathy Cadien returned from their Canada trip about-the llth of October. They hit quite a bit of rain almost everywnere they went. EDITORS NOTE PLEASE HELP!!! I am trying to include personal notes and the like to help everyone know what is happening in the world of Opisthobrancnia. When you send something in to me please be careful to make it readabie. Typing is great; printing is helpful. Be especially careful with scientific names. I spend hours to decipher th words even in English. IBLTOGRAPHY OF Starting with this issue of the Opisthobranch Newsletter, all citation numbers will have five digits. I have tried everything to keep from going to five digits but have decided it is easier to use five digits than worry about confusion wit! year numbers. All lists and indexes will be converted to five digits by adding a leading zero "QO", One other -.change is tnat will assign a paper a number as soon as it is listed and make no attempt to put the papers into alphabetical order within issues. The numeric and alphabetical cross index listings should help out quite a bit and they will be updated periodically. tring CUP Ying GPISTHOBRANCHIA 10000 ABREA, N.S., September 1981. [untitled]. INDEX TO THE OPISTHOBRANCHIA: The Veliger, volumes 13-23 compiled by David W. Behrens. PRELIMINARY LIST of OPISTHOBRANCH GENERA and SUBGENERA compiled by Steven J. Long. [avaliable as a separate at $2.00 each] This is a replacement for: CARLTON, JAMES T., 1970. Index to the Opisthobranchia: The Veliger, Vol. 1-12. Dave Behrens spent many hours eoupiling the list from volumes 13 to 23 of The Veliger to complete the index from 1955 through April, 1981. As with Carlton’s original work, the following is not intended to be a formal index; thus, neither illustrations nor trivial names are indexed. Book and article reviews have not been indexed, nor have figure or plate captions. This list is just that, a list, and is not in any way intended as a publication for taxonomic purposes. The opisthobranch list was started by Steven J. Long several months ago as a quick check for names which have been used for opisthobranchs. It specifically excludes pyramidellids, lamellar-ians, and titiscanians. At the recent WiC 27 WSM meetings it was decided to complete this list and print it in the Opisthobrancli Newsletter for everyone's use. This type of list should have 15 years of cross-checking and verification tc ensure its accuracy. It does not. Where possible, the original has been checked. Where two identical names are listed, they are arranged according to priority, if known. A "#" preceeds the end of the line where the original literature has not yet been Yoliume checked. If there is doubt about anv vart of the listing a question mark (?) has been used. Names are listed exactly as used in the original, including errors, auestion marks subgeneric usage, and the lixe. Donald Cadien, Ronald Velarde, and Hans Bertsch nav I made major contributions to this list This combined list will be printed in seetions in the Opisthcbranch Newsletter with the hope that corrections and additions will be made and sent to the editor within the next few weeks. The preferable method is to make a copy of the pages and make additions on that copy to send to me. Within a few weeks of tne first printing, I will print a supplement to the ON with all the additions in a singie format which may be used separately from the ON. The supplements will also include newer volumes of The Veliger and any other articles which readers send to me Note: Only those listings with volume and pages after the name are to be found in The Veliger. "ONnnnn" refers to Opisthobranch Newsletter citation number. EDITOR’S NOTE necessary index is a cross reference between ON citation number and the volume and page numbers where the most compiete citation appears in the ON. Examples are given here. 10000 13:25 10001 13:25 10002 13:25-26 3 10003 13:26 ae should be able to print this listing at least 4 columns across the page by 80 lines down. This will yield 320 references per page. Since there are about 6000 citation numbers it will take almost 20 pages to print them all, but, the list shculd allow Sad to find things quickly and easily. Deleted references would simply not appear in the next edition of the index. I would appreciate reader comments on the need for such an index and I would especially like to have a volunteer to do the job. All you need is a complete set of the Opisthobranch Newsletter. I doubt that many people even notice and most Seaceial eee do not care but the amount of information in each page of the Opisthobranch Newsletter has more than doubled since the early issues. This is my Christmas newsletter. 1981 has been a real growth year for me and, I think, for: the ON. Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for your: continued Support and friendship. It has kept me going for a lot of years. Anyone travelling through Los Angeles is welcome to. call or drops by. Much of the time there will not be anyone at my house so please do use the answering machine (433-7148). I will definitely get back to you as soon as possible. I work very close to Los Angeles International Airport and would be happy to come over and see any of you even if for a stopover on a longer flight. I sell microfilm equipment and supplies for Datacorp (213/679-0473) and am in the office most of the daytime. Please feel free to call if you can’t catch me anywhere else. I may not ibe able: tovtalk for a dong. time but: £ will be pleased to hear from you. My daughter, Kristin, is now 13 and will be with me for the Christmas holidays. She is doing well in school and growing into a very pretty young lady. My mother, Ruth, has recovered almost completely from her strokes last year and is:;living. in the house at 361 Roycroft. Thank you all for the Christmas cards and letters. I hope that this Christmas is as nice for you as it is for me. Thanks to Dr. P.L. Phung for proof reading the Poizat paper below. Thanks to Jim Lance, Don Cadien, Ron Velarde, Dave Behrens, Dr. Baba, Eveline Marcus, and others who have provided material for this issue. I have a volunteer to cross-index the back volumes of the ON. Are there any volunteers for specific journal runs? I really do not want to print an index before it is reasonably complete so let’s get several journals into the next species index. If anyone notices non- opisthobranch names creeping in please notify me at once. The suggestion has been made to rearrange some of the names by taxonomic placement. I do not want to list names except as actually cited. Any taxonomic placement changes may be noted in brackets after the original name. They will also show up as the new combination in alphabetical order within the list. oo = eeeereeere = 5 Pe Sasa ae seh SEE _ " Sees: eee oe Soe caer ii 2 fore as at Se es eS ees na es peer is Sraemetemcigs re teeteee mote terns
