It was really nice to read and see what people’ are up to again... 2 have been, sont of out of touch lately since I began my residence here in the. Lab -of Biophysics. 2. am working here doing neural anatomy and ultrastructure. We use Hermissenda as our principal research animal (Mike Morris sends us about 100/week) so I am still working on nudibranchs. The lab is really nicely set up with several electrophysiologists, a behaviorist, a biochemist, a mariculturist, as well as myself (morphologist) and we are all working on the many aspects of the cellular basis of associative learning. In between times, which are really hard to find unfortunately, I still work on the coryphellids. Gary McDonald and I are currently putting together a MS describing a-new species from Elkhorn slough. If things go well, I should have it pretty well together by the end of January. In October I spent a week in Los Angeles attending the Annual Meeting of the Society for Neurosciente, and had called Dave Behrens and tried Gary, but couldn’t get together with either. I wish I had known you were so close...." Steve Long & Bobbie Sahner travelled to Baywood Park on the 19th of February and met Dave Behrens, Mike Haberiand, Bob Henderson, and others. Several people collected Cave Landing and found about 10 species. That night we were treated to a slide show of Vancouver Island and L.A. Bay fauna along with Pacific Coast branch Slides. Sunday, Dave Behrens and company Sighted 27 species of branchs diving in Morro Bay. That must be a record for a dive there. Don Cadien has been doing quite a bit of field work lately for M.B.C. Don’s wife, Kathy Cadien is very pregnant. Congratulations Kathy! From Michael T.-Ghiselin: "Since relocating here I have been awarded a MacArtur Prize Fellowship.... I am not sure how much weight my work on opisthobranchs had in the decision to give me the prize, but I’d like to think it helped. Although I am not currently working on opisthobranchs, I often refer to them in my publications on reproduction. The next of these will be a chapter on evolutionary aspects of reproduction, in Giese & Pearse’s Treatise. I trust you know the work and Bob Beeman’s chapter. From time to time I see Hans Bertsch, and I correspond with Terry Gosliner -- both former students. Hans and I may do some field work together." Ron Velarde is still at Long Beach State and teaching at Cerritos College. From Dave Mulliner: "In November, Ron McPeak, myself and 3 other people went to Punta Ascuncion. There was 85 miles of dirt’ road after we left the main road below Guerrero Negro. There were some sea mounts about five miles off shore.. We dove these pinnacles and also the kelp beds~ along the coast. The weather was excellent and the fishing was good. This is a transition zone between northern and southern species, so it isn’t really a good habitat for molluscs, we found quite a variety but not many of any species. Among the branchs collected was a Coryphellina sp. first collected by Lance from L.A. Bay. Flabellinopsis iodinea was the most common and very large. Both Aplysia californica and vaccaria, Diaulula sandiegensis, Spurilla oliviae and Phidiana pugnmax were taken. We would like to go down there again but not launching and loading a boat from shore through the surit< I willbe retiring’in July of Wwhishyear, then maybe I can get more branching in." From Gordon Robilliard: "Recently I have not been able to do much with opisthobranchs. I reviewed Behrens and Nybakken/McDonald’s books on opisthobranchs plus a few manuscripts. I have relatively little time to do.any research or prepare any of the numerous papers that I have sitting around. I have been doing some diving in the Beaufort Sea of Alaska and have found some of the opisthobranch species that have been listed by others. There is some potential for research on them, although I think it will be difficult as they seem to be few and far between." The 1981 California Fish Commission Photo Contest saw another branch to the awards circle. Dan Gotshall won a 3rd place (one of 4 awards Dan took) in the invertebrate category with a photo of Flabellinopsis iodinea. Congratulations to Dan! Steve Long stayed with Pete & Sue Oringer in Eureka, California for several days and with Sandra Millen in Vancouver, B.C., Canada, for several days during early March. Collected a bit in Crescent, City, California with no luck. Also collected with Sandra in Vancouver and two places in Victoria. Found four species in Vancouver and two in Victoria. Sandra’s mother, Mrs. Millen, provided food and lodging for us while we were in Victoria. She was very nice. Sven Donaldson was very kind to us while in Vancouver. I also talked with Ron Long while in Vancouver and Larry Andrews while in Seattle. al aN met pe dre Ly LAI OI 23/9 OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER February (April) 1982 Volume 14, Number 2 Page 3 Bosellia marcusi d-B.R. READER FORUM From Malcom Edmunds: "Some years ago I seem to recall that ON made a policy decision that original papers would not be published in ON. In other words printing of ideas, views and range extensions may well be of value to colleagues but does not constitute a scientific publication. Recently this policy appears to have changed. If so, I for one regret it, for two reasons. First because a reputable scientific journal will only publish papers that have been refereed and which (hopefully) reach an appropriate standard; and second because papers in scientific journals reach a large number of libraries and abstracting centres so that the papers there enter the realm of scientific literature. i is not true for the majority of professional newsletters. Having said this, I can see the advantage of printing in ON summaries of some papers or even entire short papers if these wore published in an obscure journal, but there could be copyright problems. By all means put this in ON if you wish, tho would not be surprised if I am in a minority wi view!" hed this From the Editor: "Material which is intended as a publication is identified as such with a title, an author, and is in the section for PAPERS’. In addition this material is cited in 2a subsequent issue of the Opisthobranch Newsletter as a paper. This material is sent to referees prior to publication although I must take responsibility and apologize for not allowing sufficient time to have this properly done in all cases. Comments on how to improve this Situation are welcomed!" CHANGE OF ADDRESS/NEW SUBSCRIBERS Dr. Michael T. Box 117 Avila Beach, CA 93424 _ The basic listing of Opisthobranch Newsletter citation numbers keyed to Opisthobranch Newsletter volume, issue, and page number was prepared by Mike Haberland. Roberta Reinhard keyed this listing into _ the word processor and added numerous cross-checks and corrections from Steve Long s basic card files. Steve decided to add the numbers found in Dr. Henry Russell s Index Nudibranchia to put all of the information in one place and allow further cross- referencing for currently accepted citations. _ In the list, "IN" refers to Index Nudibranchia with _ the page number following. All of Dr. Russell s citation numbers which have alpha suffixes have been recited in the Opisthobranch Newsletter with new numbers.
