Chett Chris Kitting was in Lompoc on 31 May finding his way back to Hopkins Marine Station after the holiday. Chris is primarily working with limpets now under Dr. Donald Abbott. I have been told that Stuart Thompson is at Hopkins working with the neurophysiology of Mclibe's swimming behavior. I hope to hear more about his ‘research. A few years back we went through a discussion of standard color name systems. Here is what may become the definitive work on the subject: a National Bureau of Standards publication en- titled "Color: Universal Language and Diction- ary of Names," puts together well known color- order systems and methods of designating color. The Color Names Dictionary details the Inter- Society Color Council-NBS system of color des- ignations, which are described as "fast becom- ing the common denominator for color termincl- ogy used in science, art and industry." Copies of this NBS Special Publication 440 are priced at $3.35 (U.S.) each, and may be ordered from the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office (Washington, D.C. 20402). er to Stock No. 003-003-01705-1. He was well known to all of uf for his work with nudibranchs and will be missed very much. His help to me was tremen- dous and many other researchers have been as- sisted with literature, letters, specimens and other work. We are also saddened by the recent death of Dr. George E. Radwin, Curator of Mollusks at the San Diego Museum of Natural History. From Philippe Bouchet: "I am just back from an expedition in the Northern Mozambique Chan- nel; we have been doing both SCUBA diving and dredgings down to 3,600m. Of course many op- isthobranchs have been collected but I am not planning any work on this material. Dr. J. Vacelet, a specialist on sponges in Marseille, was present on the expedition; so we paid some attention to associations between dorids and sponges. PhAyllidia seemed to be very selec- tive, for instance. On my return, I visited 8211 Rudman in Dar es Salaam and enjoyed some snenkeliing at Kundudri, Site tunes CNN och eae le = + < Lanzania Ss Marine ind NOEZN OF ie es Salaam From Eveline Marcus: “Back home, had a time, with some opisthos but many more old and new triends. Washington, Boston-Nahant, Durhan, Miami were further steps in my trip. «nd now I sit at my Onchidellas and don't know where to begin, and at home I am buried in letters, reprints, and requests. Dr. Ortea sent me xeroxes of 600 page thesis. He has been studying a lot, about 200 pages on opisthobranchs. For the next months I expect the visit of Rosalie M. Vogel, just having finished her thesis on Doriopsilla, and Prof. Frederick Bayer, who has for many years been helpful with material, publishing and collecting." Dr. David R. Franz spent the summer in Maine, work- ing at the \niversity of Maine's murine laboratory at Walpole (The Darling Center). Several aspects of the ecology of a guild of hydroid-eating nudi- branchs which feed specifically on Tubularia were studied. Dave Mulliner is working on several new specics and one new genus of nudibranch from the Gulf of Califor- nia. From Kerry B. Clark (29 June 1977): “Sorry to be so quiet regarding the newsletter lately; we have a very heavy teaching load here (12. hours +++), and I had co rewrite some lectures this hear. tf alse wrote several manuscripts (one of them on sacoglces- sans, even), and have kicked my family out for the summer so that I can finish several manuscripts on opisthobranchs. A symposium was held at the Baruch Institute (Univ- ersity of South Carolina) last month, in which two opsithobranch papers were presented. Marilyn Switzer-Dunlap and Mike Hadfield gave a paper on growth rates of Aplysiids, with some excellent data on reproductive output. If only we had more data like that, and any at all for the nudibranchs. I coauthored a paper on direct development of Flusia cauze, together with Mario Buracca and Hugh Stirts. In addition to a dexcription of the development, we presented data on uptake of chloroplasts by juven- iles, which we plan to explore further. I note that there is a rapid increase in plastid symbiosis of sacoglossans. In my gentle treatment of these animals is necessary to obtain vood results. Lt: iis extract data papers on opinion, unreasonable to from animals maintained under unnatural condit- Wop T(2) 18 ou ions. Fresh material is important too. ke find that animals brought into the lab increase their chlorophyll content if given their natur-: al food in aquariums. This has necessitated a repeat of some work, even where animals were used several days within collection. We hope soon to present some comparative data on this for several species. Apparently some factor in situ keeps chlorophyll levels lower, per- haps higher light intensities than we use. Workers should also report light intensities in units of Photosynthetic Active Radiation (PAR), e.g. microeinsteins; units such as lux and foot- candles do not account for differences in spec- tral quality. Standard units will be a necess- ity for comparative work later. We prefer to use indirect extimates of biomass. Fresh weights are quite unreliable; when 2 mol- lusc is handled, muscle contractions force blood through the soft skin (diapedesis), cre- ating too much variability. We construct a "standard curve’ by slow relaxation of sluzs with MgClo, measurement with optical microze- try, and oven-dry weighing. A log-log plot will give a straight line, and regressions typ- ically give a correlation coefficient of .95- -98, if a range of animal sizes is used. Live animals can then be measured by relaxation with- out direct weighing, saving time and results are more accurate than possible with wet weigh- ing. For more details, see my 1975 life cycles paper. In a follow-up to mv note on large-tank meint- enance of opisthobranchs with coerocytic algae, I think we mav even have accidentally cultured some planktotrophic larvae to metamorphosis this way. Several weeks after introducing ma- ture animals (Oxynoe) and production of ez3s, we have had cohorts of small juveniles appear, with &@ guite rapid vrowth: rate. rvkniow ais y be hard to believe, butt at a loss to explain it otherwise. Possibly the juveniles able to resist the weak currents of the sub-yravel filter, as in the 'Planktonkreisel' Later this summer I hope to install several such tanks on the roor of our aew building and test this problem. I'd be interested whether others have had similar happenings. Mav am are Incidentally, if any of you are planning to collect in Florida, there have been some new laws concerning collecting. If you skin or SCUBA dive, vou must have a dive flag, unless in waters specifically defined for recreational swimming (i.e. a patrolled beach). Also, col- lection of all corals and fire corals, anc sea fans, is. forbidden without a permit; such per- mits are not casualiy issued. The marine pat- rol agents. vary greatly in temperament; many are quite nice and understandiny, others will not give you a second chance. Also, white. the law states that the gvorgonians Gorgonia venta- dina and G. flavellum are protected, most ag- _ OPISTHOBRANCH NEWSLETTER_ aiu. Penalties for vio!ations of collecting laws can re- sult in confiscation of all equipment, and I think, even your boat if they need one at the local patrol headquarters. The state recreation areas are also generally off-limits to collectors, now, too, though apparently you can bring a boat in to the same area and collect with impunity. The days of free and easy collecting are fast vanishing, due to abuses by a very few."
