PAYNTER, JR. 1989 Printed in the United States of America Copyright 1989 By the President and Fellows of Harvard College INTRODUCTION The manner in which data are gathered and presented has been considerably refined over the years since the appearance in 1975 of the first volume in this series of Ornithological Gazetteers of the Neotropics. The gazetteer continues to be based mainly on information obtained from published material, but the bibliography has been expanded and is now a complete list of ornithological publications for a given country, whether quoted or not in the text. On the other hand, papers that provide information useful in preparing the gazetteer, but which are only tangen- tially concerned with the ornithology of the country, are cited in full when used, but do not appear again in the bibliography. Those interested in regional faunistics should, therefore, find the bibliography uncluttered and more useable. Another refinement has been a concerted attempt to list every visitor, with inclusive dates of his visit, at each site, rather than merely to document, through a single example, that the locality has some ornithological significance. The value of this is readily apparent when one confronts two or more collection places with the same name, or attempts to plot the range of a bird using varied and fragmentary data gathered from many sources. The descriptions of collection sites have been expanded to include reference to prominent nearby towns or geographical features in order to enable the user to plot a collecting site with the aid of only a simple map. Because the first edition of the gazetteer for Paraguay appeared early in the series (1977), it is of no surprise to find that this second edition differs considerably. Material overlooked in the first edition and recent publications are, of course, included, as well as the refinements mentioned above. In addition, through the kindness of Dr. Robert W. Storer, many Paraguayan localities represented by specimens in the Museum of Zoology, University of Michigan, but not yet cited in publications, have been added, plus additional collectors and their dates at previously known localities. This unpublished information now joins that from the Museum of Comparative Zoology and the Field Museum of Natural History. The format of this gazetteer is the same as its predecessors. Gazetteer No. 35, Paraguay (1957), of the United States Board on Geo- graphic Names has been used as the authority for spellings, alphabetizing, geographical coordinates, etc. Sometimes current usage differs from that employed in the 30 year old list, but Gazetteer No. 35 is retained as the standard and alternative usage is cross-indexed to it. Because Paraguay is entirely south of the equator all latitudes are south; all longitudes, of course, are west. ill The following abbreviations and citations are used: AMNH FMNH IGM MCZ MHA UMMZ USBGN American Museum of Natural History (data from specimens therein).
