Duxbury Frae Library
Time and Learning. Block Schedule. New Administrators. New Teachers. We came to school this fall anxious and unsure, yet curious and excited. Sin the beginning things were rather chaotic, as administrators, teachers, and students alike tried to adjust. Now, as the insecurities calm down, we are realizing the positive effects that the "Wind of Change" has swept through Duxbury junior Senior High School and through our town.
The day goes by a bit fas terand the blocks themselves fig: Why bother looking at the clock during an eighty- five minute period?
We will always remember the familiar character of Cumberland Jarms and barney's Qas Station, but now we'll have the reality of improvements in construction and atmosphere. The Ellison Center for the Arts and the new Duxbury Jree Library will provide us with opportunities to develop artistically and intellectually.
Who knows what else the Scorpion s "Wind of Change" may blow to us if we keep our eyes open and our minds curious.

When I started out with you, still children for the most part, you were scared. And so you bashed each other over the heads with something resembling jealousy, but more often looking like fear. In tight, huddled circles you danced about, searching for friendship, love, and acceptance. And this is the way it should have been. And this is the way that I was too.
One summer passed and in a flash of fragmented dreams, high school became a reality; not some mythical place across the street, where girls wore heels, boys were men, and everyone had car keys and a bad attitude. Suddenly, no one knew where to begin, or if beginning again was the thing to do. So we tried to look confident, shoving our way through the halls with the best of them. Forced to reconsider our previous positions, we began a new dance, a far friendlier one. In this dance, the guys began to speak to the girls with new voices, and the girls were not quite so darting and coy. Most important, the dance involved everyone - well almost. But it was a start, and it gave all of us hope.
My mother leans in over my computer. "Oh, you are going to make me cry.../' she says, and actually I might cry too, because right now, silly as it may seem, I don't want to go on without you, even those who were never my friends, and especially those who were my enemies. You see, all of this has grown so comfortable over the past four years. All the faces and voices and inside jokes, the stupid fights and the communal sentiments we all seem to share about life in this small town. And I know I've worked so hard to feel the way I do today. I don't know if I'm ready to let it go.

People sometimes have a special impact on others. Everyone has a role model or someone to whom they look up. There are always favorite relatives, coaches, and teachers. I've had many favorite teachers and I found that they all have similar personalities. I like it when my teachers are energetic, and have a passion for what they're teaching and for what the students are learning. If a student can tell that a teacher cares for him or her, I've noticed that their willingness to try is increased. When a teacher acknowledges me as an individual, things take on a greater meaning.

Many teams in the league thought that this would be the year to finally beat Duxbury. They were mistaken. Despite losing nine starting seniors, the team ran away with the league title, going undefeated with six points separating first and second place. In a third round, hard fought, double overtime game, we lost to the eventual State Champions with one minute remaining until the shootout. Led by senior striker, Brent Cesare, with 51 points, the Duxbury Soccer Team cruised to a 22- 1 record, scoring 96 goals and allowing in just 12. It was an exceptional year, surprising everyone, including coach Foster Cass.

"Go Nuts Field Hockey!"
After losing eleven seniors to graduation, this year's Field Hockey team was supposed to be a rebuilding team. Proving everyone wrong, including ourselves, the Dragon Field Hockey Club had a tremendous season: we lost only two games, which had not been done since 1985. The most memorable victory of the season was beating the power house of the Atlantic Coast League, Dennis Yarmouth, by a score of 2-0. It was the first time Duxbury had beaten Dennis-Yarmouth in seven years and their first league loss in four. Our united team consisted of twelve seniors, three of them All- Stars, and six juniors. The Field Hockey team qualified for tournament, but lost in the first round during overtime. Despite our few losses, we proved that we were a team with which to be reckoned.

This year, because of the small size and young age of our team, it was surprising and quite pleasing when we kept winning meets. By the end of the season we were league champs ! Probably one of the main factors of our success was Coach Ron Glennon. Both positive and inspiring, he helped us develop a talent that we did not know we had. The highlight of our season was the Foot Locker Meet in the Bronx, New York. In addition to an exciting time, the overnight turned out to be a special bonding experience. Overall, the year was enj oy able and the season terrific !

Each season of cheerleading gets better and better. Of course there is (and always will be) the constant overload of spirit and enthusiasm for which Duxbury Cheerleaders are known. This year however, we felt even more appreciated and recognized as a group working together to support our varsity soccer and varsity football teams. Thanks to our fabulous coach Bette Green and the creative work of our dedicated captains, Kristen Crowley and Joy Butters, the squad had innovative formations, mounts, and dances. Getting up at six in the morning during the summer was not so much of a task when one was working with supportive and motivated people. We wish just as much success to the winter squad!

One year I met a guy from DV/XBVRY. His name was JVNIOR, but he was a SENIOR. He was a really good kid, would never think of getting HIGHbut he despised SCHOOL. Instead of studying he looked toward other interests. In particular, AN activity that was not extremely popular but he became an EXTRAORDINARY player. Ping Pong became his life.
Before each match he would BLEND 3 raw eggs with leaves off OF a maple tree, and would then proceed to drink this mixture. He learned this trick in Ping Pong EDVCATION. It gave him super human strength ANT) a profound tolerance for pain. He became unstoppable. He was having so much FV/N! And to top it off he knew that^^HAT he was doing now WOVLD someday help him.
One of his most exciting matches was against Gus Silverspoon- Grandpa from the hit show "OVR House." How cool! He quit SCHOOL so that he could BE practicing at all hours of the day. He soon found that there were certain rackets he liked and others he could do
W1THOVT. THE greatest thing of all was that he had so much ENTHVS1ASM for the
sport.
During one of his tours he met a woman whom he fell in love with but she was looking for COMMITMENT AND that would take away from his Ping Pong. So he said goodbye, knowing that the love of his life was slipping away. A few days after he broke the news to her a SPIRIT came to him telling him he had made many mistakes in his life and that if he did not try to correct them he would receive a severe punishment from the King OF the Underworld. Junior was frightened and in an instant left Ping Pong to be with his love.
I haven't talked to Junior in a long time, OVR friendship has faded. Last I heard, he was balancing school, ACTIVITIES, and his love. How? I am not sure but I HOPE he is doing well. WE were such good friends for such a short while. I NEVER thought this could HAVE happened TO me. I can't FIND anyone quite like Junior but I am still on the look- OVT. Thanx Junior!

The Student Council has been hard at work, doing a wonderful job this year. A new student Council letter is published after each meeting to keep the student body informed. Current endeavors in- clude: a student survey on block scheduling, a Senior Privileges Com- mittee, a Student Issues Committee, and the an- nual Red Cross Blood Drive. The goal this year is to give students a voice in this time of great change.

DRAMA
The Drama Club has gone through many changes this year. It has expanded to include the seventh and eighth grade as well as offering classes on lighting and set making. The club hopes that by next year they will be back in full swing, with the return of spring and fall tournaments, States, and a musical.

The Teen Leaders have been extremenily busy this year. The club be- gan by hosting a scaven- ger hunt for the seventh graders and moved on to help with the High School Open House and raising money for Make- A-Wish. Just recently. Teen Leaders collected 1 ,532 cans for the Coun- cil of Churches and are planning a toy drive and a coat drive for later this year. Members are also busy getting ready to go to DES and speak with the sixth graders about health issues and, hope- fully, will be meeting with Little Brothers and Sisters as well. It has been a terrific year.

This is the first full year of Ecology Club's exist- ence. The group is dedi- cated to raising environ- mental awareness and to the preservation of the en- vironment. Thus far they have participated in sev- eral local events such as the Duxbury Beach Sweep, and have begun a successful schoolwide paper and aluminum re- cycling program (not an easy task!). Plans for the future include Adopt-a- Highway, beach grass planting. Earth Day ac- tivities and more!

Differences
The Committee on Human Differences meets regularly to discuss and promote tolerance of diversity at DJSHS. The club works toward understanding and respect for ethnic, racial, sexual, as well as personal differences.

The newspaper is back! After a few years of downtime, Duxbury High School's very own newspaper is back. Named 'A Different Drummer,' the purpose of the newspaper is to give the students a voice. The newspaper staff writes on a various number of topics, including the regulars, such as school news and sports, and then some others, like features and editorials. You don't have to be interested in journalism to join. The staff has all sorts of things that need to be done. Meetings are held weekly. Be there!
Academic means "educa- tional, reforming, revealing, illuminating, eye-opening."
Decathlon means "match, competition, tournament, marathon, rivalry, duel." Put hoth of these together and you have a team of committed in- dividuals who learn together and fight together, not with their fists, but with their brains, After attending weekly "training sessions" in six different fields including economics, fine arts, lan- guage and literature, math- ematics, social studies, and science, Academic members represent Duxbury at compe- titions and scrimmages held at other schools. This year's focus has been on the United Nations and the fifty years it has been a peace-making or- ganization for the world. The Duxbury team has learned a lot and looks forward to being an Academic powerhouse on the South Shore and perhaps in the state in the near future.

Media Services is a course designed to ac- quaint students with the skills needed in the daily operation of a media cen- ter. It involves them in all aspects of media produc- tion and teaches them a variety of skills in this area. Students receive work experience as well as training. If something is going on with TVs, VCRs, microphones, or other audio-visual equip- ment, Media Services is probably there!

Over 200 talented and energetic students participate in the Duxbury High School Music Department. Led by Ric Madru, Jim Vinci and Jill Noerenberg, with assistance from John Rudolph and Arthur Johnson, the students work together in one or more of the performing groups: Concert Band, Marching Band, Orchestra, Full Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Choir, Madricals, Jazz Band, Brass Ensemble, and a new Percussion Ensemble. Every other year the entire department attends a music festival. Last year the students went to New York City.

A click on the snare and a crash on the cymbal
Kicks off the music. Some licks on the guitar and a walk on the bass In time with the blasts and lip shakes of the trumpets. Saxes carry the tune with a jive melody.
Drums keep a steady, drivin' tempo; Dah dah ta dah on a swishy pair of hats. Tenor solo followed by a smokin' solo by the cats on the bones. A palpitating sax solo erupts Pursed by an ostentatious drum solo. The drummer continuously castigates the drums and cymbals As he proficiently propels his stick around the set.
The ensemble reprises the opening melody And concludes the song with a synchronic blast. The musicians are in awe of the illustrious sound they just played.
