A New Wave
A new wave is sweeping across the campus of Brevard Col- lege, and it is a wave of change and of continuity. The new wave marks the beginning of a new school year, the beginning of new challenges, hopes, friendships, and expectations. It also brings the continuation of traditions, renewal of friendships, and a resumption of the endeavor to learn and grow responsibly.
Efforts continue by all who are closely associated with Bre- vard College to make it one of the finest two year institutions in the country. It is an effort requiring perseverance and vision The college, under the leadership of the administration, headed by Dr. William Greer, has intensified its efforts to stress the impor- tance of academic commitment and social responsibility. To- ward that concern, the administration and faculty extend an invitation to the students of Brevard College to aspire to the pursuit of knowledge and understanding.
The new wave carries with it many challenges and many possibilities. For the students of Brevard College it is a time rich with potential.

It's That Time Of Year Again
The annual Derby Day at Brevard College was an exciting and entertaining occasion held on campus during the week following Orientation week. Students were occupied all afternoon with a variety of sports like volleyball, tug-of-war, izzy-dizzy, tossing the egg, and relay races. Immediately following the races, some students decided to cool off by taking advantage of a "very wet" version of musical chairs. A few students were even brave enough to enter the jello slurping contest, which ended up in a very messy jello war! The afternoon was topped off by a scrimmage soccer game performance by the Guy Tornadoes, a tug-of-war over the creek and the "creek- ing" of Dean Witek and President Greer.
Paying close attention, these Brevard College stu- dents wait for the outcome of the Derby Day events.

New Faces
Remember that first day of college? There you were, a lowly freshman, standing in a mile-long line waiting for the school nurse to approve your health form so you could rush back to your new dorm room and unpack before the cafeteria closed for lunch. All those feelings were rushing through you, making your head spin: The excitement of being independent, the anxiety of starting all over again in a new environment, and the fun of learning new names or brand new faces are all a part of what going off to college and growing up is about. This year, freshmen were in for a change from the new administration, headed by Dean Witek. Wednesday, the first day of orientation, each incom- ing student was given a schedule for that day's events and the following five day's events until classes started. The agenda included orientation meetings, ice cream socials, dances, and . . . what was that ... ah, yes . . . the mandatory Camp Greenville all day Saturday in South Carolina complete with group games, lunch, dinner, and a square dance. Before Saturday, though, came the meetings. All the freshmen crowded into Dunham Auditorium, smiling shyly at one another and waiting patiently for the meetings to begin; they usually lasted forty-five minutes to an hour with topics like the point system and scheduling being discussed. Friday night, the campus exploded with excitement as word of the first dance got around. The transformation of the gym into a dance floor was made easily, and the people who showed up seemed to have a good time mingling and dancing. Aside from a few hitches, the week dedicated to us, the freshmen, was a success. Growing experiences, fun times, new friends, and new faces — that is what it was all about.

Green dormitory is described at times as being fun, loud, outrageous, and different. Under the direction of the new Resident Director, Marty Hum- phrey, Green houses over 100 men. These men are always busy whether it be in academics, intramurals, or just plain fun. Their rooms reflect their dif- ferent personalities in many ways. Posters — ranging from sports to mov- ies — stereos, the ever-needed refrig- erator, and television sets are among the things the residents of Green use to fill their rooms. Homecoming '87
"Are you going to the Homecoming dance? Who are you going with? What are you wearing?" These and other questions were whispered one person to another as the big day — October 10 — approached.
This year, three days worth of Homecoming events were combined, for the first time, with the Alumni Weekend. The Class of '37 had its 50th year reunion. Scheduled activities in- cluded a men's and women's soccer game, lunch by the pool, the annual Homecoming dinner, and a dance which featured the presentation of the Homecoming King, Prince, Queen, and Princess with music provided by the group "Heart to Heart". During these events, students mingled with Brevard students of fifty years ago.
Wrapping up the weekend, alumni attended a Sunday breakfast, worship service, and lunch.

Halloween also brought Alcohol Awareness Week to a close with a Mocktail and Costume Mixer at the Storm Cellar, complete with a Non- Alcoholic Bar tended by Ed Davis. Life And Culture
For an enjoyable one-half credit hour in the humanities, life and culture is just the thing. This fall, the life and culture series opened with a convocation where the student body, faculty, and administration assembled to usher in the new year. Joab Leseyne, the President of Wofford College, was the guest speaker and delivered a spirited, insightful lecture.
For the next event, in celebrating our Constitution's 200th birthday, a well- known former judge spoke about the Bill of Rights and the effect of the amend- ments on our American heritage. Patriotic music was played by the bands from Brevard College, and Rosman and Brevard High Schools.
A few weeks after the constitution program came "A Visitation from John Keats." Mark Stevenson portrayed poet John Keats in this one-man show which has been performed at Keat's home, the Edinburgh Festival, and the Lincoln Center Library.
Following the John Keats evening, the topic "UFO's Are Real" was discussed. Through statistics and a slide show presentation, those in the crowded Dunham Auditorium saw pictures of actual sightings and were able to ask questions to Nuclear Physicist Stanton Friedman, who headed the program.
Next on the agenda came the Purguson Family Lecture Series with Dr. Andrew Summers. Dr. Summers gave two lectures on the importance of the modern Christian family living in the secular world.
"The Foreigner" was this year's choice of plays by Professor Sam Cope, director of drama. The performances ran during Parent's Weekend and drew large crowds who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the performances.
The Concert and Jazz bands performed their fall concerts festively. Guest soloist Kristen Kelly, a Brevard College faculty member, was the featured artist for the concert band under direction of Steve Kelly. A hearty round of applause completed the performance^ of the two bands.
Topping off fall life and culture, Dr. Greer and the B.C.'s Fine Arts Division presented the annual Christmas tree lighting. Twinkling candle lights danced during the service of sacred and secular music, Christmas texts, and the actual lighting of the campus tree.
This fall's life and culture was a success thanks to participation and support of B.C.'s students, faculty, administration, and community members. This is defi- nitely a good way to earn one-half a credit and have cultural experiences at the same time.
The Purguson Family Lecture Series gave us thought provoking information.

Student Union
The Student Union is more than just a building. It is a place where many activities take place. There are movies shown from Star Trek to China Town, which students enjoy as a break from studying. On Wednesdays, there is campus worship during the morning. Some evenings are spent in the Storm Cellar with special guests, such as co- medians and magicians. Many stu- dents enjoy the video games and shooting pool to entertain themselves. When students need help with any kind of student affairs, it is taken care of in the upstairs office. The nurse is also located in the S.U. to help when a stu- dent is sick. The post office is busiest of all with hopeful faces waiting to re- ceive a letter from home with money inside rather than "junk" mail. Then there is the snack bar with hungry stu- dents who can not take the cafeteria food another night. Finally, the book store is necessary for those who are needing things to take to class. There- fore, we can see how the Student Union is a vital part of student life in more ways than one.

Brevard's first drama presentation of the year was "The Foreigner," by Larry Shue. The setting of the play is in Northern Georgia at a hunting lodge. The cast was comprised of Brevard College students: Scarlet Morgan as Catherine, Mike Holcombe as Froggy, Paul Dilberger as the Reverend Dave, and Olin Hatch as Charlie. The com- munity also contributed to the play through the participation of Brevard residents Pat Fuleihan as Betty, Lee Smith as Owen, and Rob Dixon as El- lard.
Professor Sam Cope had not had an entirely new cast like this since 1969. "The Foreigner" was his 33rd produc- tion at the Barn Theatre, where it ap- peared on November 5-8 (Parents' Weekend) and on November 13-14.

Tis The Season
This year. Christmas was a festive time for all the students and the community Doors and windows were decorated throughout the residence halls. All over the campus, trees and buildings were decorated and festively lighted. Though the last week was exam week, the students found time to share the Christmas spirit. The Collegiate Singers gave an inspiring performance along with lighting the campus Christmas tree. President Greer gave a wonderful Christmas party in the student union for all the students. Many of the students shared "Secret Santas" in the residence halls or through different clubs. West Beam had a party and enjoyed the company of President Greer and Joyce and Randy Jackson. The weekend before exams, Top Secret a band from Tennessee, performed. All together, the students enjoyed their last week of school before Christmas break, celebrating the Christmas season.

Over The Border
It has been said that the English language is one of the hardest to master, and for those of us who have spent many a night racking our brains to come up with a thesis for a paper due the next morning, we heartily agree. The majority of us on campus came from an English speaking background, but there are some among us who are blending in with a native tongue other than English. These students are the foreign exchange students at Brevard College.
Brevard attracts numerous foreign exchange students through the national exchange student company. The company gives students from countries abroad a chance to gain first hand experiences by living in a foreign country like America while learning its language, traditions, and culture.
This year, Brevard houses many exchange students who are actively involved in both extra-curricular activities and required academic studies.
Students from countries like Sweden, Australia, Japan, South America, and others represent their countries well and form a sort of melting pot at the college. According to Yasuko, a student from the southern Japanese island of Fukoka, Brevard has a number of characteristics which attracts exchange stu- dents like herself including the fact that Brevard is in a state stratigically located between two major tourist states — Florida and New York. Yasuko took six years of English in junior high and high school and took tests judging her English skills before arriving in America as a foreign exchange student. She plans to use her bi-lingual ability to become an English teacher in Japan.
Another exchange student, Jim Oostriesland from Suriname, South America (which is above Brazil), says that becoming an exchange student "offers a lot of opportunity." He is learning English slang which has helped him to be "more understand- able." Jim's native tongue is Dutch. Before attending Brevard, along with elementary school training in English grammar and comprehension, Jim traveled to other English speaking nations enabling him to pick up much of the English language he knows. Jim is a science major with a business minor.
Rusty Rogers is very busy eyeing all the girls in the cafeteria.
Jim Oostriesland is making a move to a new country as well as a new room.

The Men Behind Our Success
The Blue Ridge Mountains, changes, cool streams, challenging academics, and determined administration and faculty . . . what do all these have in common? One of the top junior colleges in the nation — Brevard College.
This 1987-88 academic year, faculty and staff are more assured than ever that by adopting a more updated disciplinary system and by interacting closely with the students, a greater feeling of unity can be achieved.
"The love of what Brevard College stands for is the idea that Brevard should be a place where people should seek to reach their highest potential," says college President, Billy Greer. Accord- ing to Greer, a main objective is to attract faculty members serious about their dedication to teach students to learn, grow, and develop. Brevard is "a place where invitations are given over and over to students for this learning and developing process", says Greer.
Working with Dr. Greer are Dean Harry Langley. Dean Norm Witek, and Dean Dana Paul. Dean Langley, who heads academics, feels that the "faculty are spending extra time our of class helping students with work and advising". Also, Langley says that "the writing and math labs are doing better". Dean Witek, head of Student Affairs, said that there have been "drastic changes from the 1986-87 year and the improvements have really been positive, even surpassing our goals and expectations; however we still need work with regard to students meeting their responsibil- ities". Dean of Admissions Dana Paul believes that the recent increase in personal contact with prospective students has led to a greater sense of well-being among the students both while they are recruited and then once they are here.
President Greer and Dean Paul contemplate an important issue.
Dean Langley thinks, "BC today, GQ tomorrow".

Resident Directors are primarily re- sponsible for the administration of their building. "R.D.'s", as they are com- monly called, have a masters degree in Counseling-Psychology or experience in the Student Affairs area. Resident Directors are responsible for all areas of student life as well as teaching class- es. R.D.'s are a very important link be- tween the residents and the adminis- tration and they are considered to be professionals as well as friends.

Editor Biar Orrell says, "I feel this year the Clarion is making an impact on the cam- pus. Our style is based around the photography. I know a lot of people don't read, so they can at least enjoy the photos. The people that do read have the added bonus of a visual aid."

This year, Ginny Tillotson and Maggie Zednik are co- sponsors for Phi Theta Kappa, better known as PTK. PTK is strictly tor junior colleges. Ms. Zednik describes it as a "worthwhile organization for all who are in it." To be a member of PTK, one must earn a 3.5 or higher during the first semester without any D's or F's. New members are in- ducted into PTK in September or January. Once in PTK, members must maintain a 3.2 average. PTK has 31 mem- bers currently involved in the tutoring program and raising money for the spring national convention in Washington, DC. Ms. Zednik feels that PTK is an "opportunity to build character and leadership. People find it interesting and

Many students work during the school year to help pay for their tuition. Others work to help pay for the expenses of college life. On these jobs, stu-

Peer counseling is provided to students at Brevard through the Resident Assistants pro- gram. Resident Assistants are assigned to each floor of the residence halls, and are re- sponsible for peer counseling and enforcement of the Uni- form Guidelines. These stu- dents must prepare for their responsibilities by taking a psychology class in peer counseling taught by Resident Director Tammy Jackson. "Jessica is my right-hand-per- son," said Kelly. "If I need something done, I go to her." Other leadership comes from trumpet players Laura Good- ing and Christian Hinkel.
The Jazz Band is composed of five saxophones — two al- tos, two tenor, and one bari- tone — five trumpets, three trombones, one tuba, an elec- tric bass guitar, and a pianist, and three percussionists. The Jazz Band performed before a standing-room only crowd in November and also another concert in the spring.

This year there was a new addition to the faculty in the music department in Dunham Auditorium. Mr. Martin is the new director of the Collegiate Singers, the Chorale, and the Show Choir. Mr. Martin defi- nitely has his hands full, but is working wonders with each group. The Collegiate Singers is open to anyone. It is the largest of the three groups and requires no audition; just par- ticipation and spirit. The cho- rale is a smaller group; it is also open to anybody. Howev- er, there is an audition that is

required. The music per- formed by this years group is sometimes more complicated. The Chorale received an invi- tation to sing at Carnegie Hall next year. The Show Choir is a very select group. It is the smallest of the three groups and the members are audi- tioned. This group performs popular Broadway and nostal- gic pieces on special occa- sions and when traveling with President Greer. The Show Choir is accompanied by the piano, the bass guitar, and the drums. When Mr. Martin was asked which group he enjoyed working with the most, his re- ply was, "They are all different — that is like asking a mother which child she loves the most." Music is music — whether it is music theory, band, or singing. It is all part of the same thing and it takes all of the above to make a whole.

Taking Their Best
Shot
The men's soccer team experienced a disappointing 1987 season. The Torna- does, in seven of their games, lost by one goal. Four of the teams they played were ranked in the top twenty nationally. While younger players gained valuable playing time, the season was frustrating, but respectable. Coach Scarborough commented, "This is one of the best teams I have ever had — we just didn't score goals." Several players received post season honors: David Chun and Joseph Brooks were named to the first team All-Region and All-Conference teams, Buck Rowlee and Bill Stevenson were named to the second team All- Region and the second team All-Conference. Mike Taylor was awarded an honorable mention for the All-Conference team. All in all, Coach Don Scarbor- ough fielded a talented and highly competitive team once again. Coach Scarbor- ough's record over the past ten years has climbed to 1 16 wins, 64 losses, and 8 ties.

Attitude, Effort And Accomplishment
The Lady Tornadoes began the year in a new conference, with many chal- lenges ahead. The ladies would be facing a very competitive conference against teams they are very unfamiliar with. The season began with a winning streak of three games, and concluded with a final record of 13 wins and 8 losses. Coach David Taylor commented that the team improved significantly during the final weeks of the season. The Lady Tornadoes advanced to the final game of the NJCAA Region X Tournament by beating Anderson College. Lees McRae ousted the Brevard women in the final game in a tightly contested match. Four players from the Lady Tornadoes were named to the Region X all-star team: Mary Nail, Paige Jackon. Melanie Thompson, and Amy Cearley. Congratulations go out to the Lady Tornadoes on a fine season!

Men Tornadoes Show Their "Stuff"
This year, the men's basketball team was a very dedicated group. At press time, half-way through the season, the team was 8-2. This year the team won the Pizza Hut Tournament. Darren Lawler was selected as the most valuable player, while Kevin Jackson was selected for the All-Tournament team. As of Decem- ber 15, Darren and Kevin were the players leading in field goal percentage in the region.
The team began preparing for the season in early September. The team members were unselfish and gave their valuable time to make a great team. As Coach Rogers said, "Basically, team unity was the main key in this year's season." The team was very talented and worked hard. All in all there were many tough, opposing teams this year and the Brevard College men's basketball team gave their best effort.

Taking It To The Hoop
This year has been very difficult for the Lady Tornadoes; howev- er they are working diligently to do the best they can. The team's co-captains this year are Alison Stocks and Jill Hair. One of the outstanding players this year is Shelley Ivey, who is scoring an average of 15 points per game. The team will be participating in the W.J.C.C.C. this year, but Coach Jane Long says that it is still too early to predict how the team will do. Coach Long says, "This has been my favorite team to work with; they never stop and they are very dedicated. The unity of the team is great and that is the main thing that keeps the team going." With the team being such a dedicated group, it will definitely be an exciting season.

A Stride Above The Rest
The competitive drive of the 1987 cross country team is typified by Robert Powell's comment, "last year we won second in the National Junior College Cross Country meet and we came back stronger than ever this year." This year's team competed on a NCAA Division I level during the regular season and. at times, it was hard to get into meets because of their great strength. The men worked very hard and dedicated themselves to winning the national champion- ship and they succeeded. Coach Rinker believes that the team, "matured as individuals and as a team, both physically and psychologically." There were also many outstanding individual performances. During the course of the season John Erickson out ran all but two runners, except in the national championships. He defeated three NCAA Division I All-Americans, and also won the Furman Invita- tional. Jeff Pajak was the top freshman finisher at both the Berry and Region meets. As Coach Rinker says, "Winning is the ability to work hard, to dedicate oneself, and to believe. The 1987 team did all three."

Determination Equals Destination
This years women's cross country team had another very successful season. For the 2nd year in a row, the team finished the season as the national runner-up. Kelli George was outstanding at the national meet. Finishing 8th, Kelli became the highest Brevard College woman finisher ever at the national meet. Michelle Lambert, the sophomore captain, played a major role in the team development. She led them all of the way. Kelli George, Alice Gaines, and Marjorie Hawk all won All-American. As Coach Rinker tells us, "The team did a solid job all year. We had a young group and it took time for them to unite. The best thing about the group is that they've got time."

It's All In The Swing
With spring just around the corner, the B.C. Women's Tennis Team began its practicing. Coach Long stated that this year she had more girls to show up for the first practice than in years past. Amy Mullins is the only returning player from last year's team. This year, the women will face a tough and challenging sched- ule. Peace College, which has a nationally ranked tennis team, was added to the schedule. Also, the women will be playing three four-year colleges. The ladies will have to pull together so that they can defend their conference championship from last year.

A Step Into The Fast Lane
The 1988 Men's Track team is dominated by distance runners with a good mix of middle distance athletes. They will compete both indoors and outdoors with both season culminating in a national championship meet. Jeff Pajak, Brad Dodson. Scott Dvorak, and Glenn McDonald will lead the pure distance runners. The middle distance corp has Nick Embrey, Geoff Moore, Jeff Breen, Steve Kandrach, and Dennis Moody. The half mile is another strong area with Allen Brooks. John Hoback, and Chet Reid. The team continues to work hard. As a group, they are running thousands of miles this winter and will reap the benefits of their work later in the spring. As the thermometer rises the time draws near for the Women's Track team to start. As of mid-February freshman Alice Gaines has already qualified in both the mile and two mile for the indoor National Champion- ship in Detroit. Michigan. Sophomore Michelle Lambert will lead the middle distance squad. The distance runners are led by Gaines and fellow freshmen Marjorie Hawk and Kelli George.

After Hour Athletes
After a full day of classes, the dorms form teams to compete in many different sports. Outdoor volleyball started this year's intramurals. Although many close games were played, no team could find the strength to defeat the East Jones Pit Crew. The Faculty took the men's volleyball championship. The games between the men's dorms and the men's faculty were very close, but as always the faculty prevails. Soon, after the students stopped spiking the ball, they began throwing it. Flag Football was the next intramural activity. The Green Gunkies were on the top of the pile in flag football competition. The final game was played between East Beam and Green. This was the second consecutive year that Green went undefeated. The final score was 26-0. Basketball and soccer intramurals were very competitive and heated the Spring Semester.

Performing With Style
The 1987-88 rheerleading team started oft with one sophomore and eight freshmen. Sandy Rogers, the coach, had the privilege of working with this new group. They began working shortly after school started. The squad had to work extra hard to form a successful group because of the many inexperienced members. Because of conflicting schedules, the squad had difficulty getting together to practice, but as the season progressed the practices became more intense and aggressive. They practiced the development of skills such as tum- bling, coordination, and building pyramids. The ladies took time from their very schedule to help promote school spirit. Their school spirit is evident as they perform all the right moves. Cissy Sheffield says, "To me cheerleading is more than a title, it's fun and exciting."

GUARDED WELL BY MOUNTAINS
Guarded well by mountains, enshrin'd in ev'ry heart. Our beloved Alma Mater, true and fair thou art. To the friendships that we cherish, to the memories that
cling, to Brevard our Alma Mater let us sing. Let the mountains that surround us ring with voices
clear and strong, and the valleys fill with echoes of
our song.
