Abstract. Interesting records of Lepidoptera in Belgium in 2010 (Lepidoptera)

Some new province records and interesting observations are mentioned. The genera and species
within them are given in alphabetical order. The nomenclature is according to Fauna Europaea
(www. faunaeur . org) .

Résumé. Observations intéressantes de Lépidoptères en Belgique en 2010 (Lepidoptera)
Plusieurs données faunistiques nouvelles par province sont mentionnées, ainsi que quelques
observations intéressantes. Les genres et espèces sont rangés alphabétiquement. La nomenclature
suit les listes de Fauna Europaea (www.faunaeur.org).

In deze vaste rubriek worden de meest interessante waarnemingen van
Lepidoptera uit het voorbije jaar (en eventueel vorige jaren) geciteerd. Vele van
de nieuwigheden in dit artikel vermeld, zijn reeds gepubliceerd op de website van
de Belgische Lepidoptera (De Prins & Steeman 2003-2011). De hele lijst is
alfabetisch gerangschikt volgens familie-, genus- en soortnaam; zo sluit hij beter
aan bij de gegevens op de website. Voor de nomenclatuur wordt de lijst van

de tuin van een restaurant te Lochristi en enkele dagen later in 5 privé tuinen in
dezelfde omgeving, leg. H. Casteels, twee adulten op 12.ix.2010 te Nieuwrode,
leg. J. Vandeplas en 1 adult op 22.iv.2011 te Lier, leg. W. Veraghtert. Nieuw
voor de Belgische fauna, AN, BR, LI en OV. Deze invasieve soort zal zich
waarschijnlijk verder uitbreiden over heel het land in biotopen met Buxus.

Tuta absoluta (Meyrick, 1917) (Fig. 3): Deze adventieve soort is afkomstig
uit Zuid-Amerika, waar ze schade toebrengt aan aardappelen, tomaten enz. Zij
werd voor het eerst uit Europa (Spanje) vermeld in 2006, waar ze erg schadelijk
is op tomaten onder glas. Ondertussen heeft de soort zich tot Midden-Europa
uitgebreid en komt ze ook in België voor, o.a. in de tomatenteelten onder glas
rond Antwerpen en Mechelen.

Glyphipterigidae

Lepidotarphius perornatellm (Walker, 1864) (Fig. 4): 2 ex. op 01.viii.2011
en 1 ex. op 03.ix.2011 te Beveren-Waas, leg. D. Baert. De soort komt voor in
China, Japan en met een andere ondersoort ook in het uiterste oosten van Rusland
(Diakonoff 1986: 257). De rups leeft op Aconus calamus en A. gramineus
(Araceae). Het gaat hier duidelijk om adventieve exemplaren die gevonden
werden in een winkel waar de voedselplant te koop was. Het is nu uitkijken of de
soort zich kan verspreiden in tuinen met vijvers waar kalmoes is aangeplant.
Voor zover we konden nagaan is het trouwens de eerste keer dat deze soort uit
Europa wordt vermeld.

A study on the Braconidae (Hymenoptera) of
Khorasan province and vicinity, Northeastern Iran

Abstract. The fauna of Braconidae (Hymenoptera) from Khorasan province and vicinity,
northeastern Iran is studied in this paper. Totally 21 species from 13 genera and 9 subfamilies
(Agathidinae, Alysinae, Brachistinae, Braconinae, Cheloninae, Euphorinae, Hormiinae, Opiinae,
Rogadinae) were collected. Of these, 3 species: Aleiodes ( Aleiodes ) esenbeckii (Hartig), Bracon
(< Orthobracon ) epitriptus Marshall and Perilitus ( Townesilitus ) bicolor (Wesmael) are new
records for Iran.

Tijdens de studie nar de Braconidae van de provincie Khorasan in Noordoost-Iran werden 21
soorten vastgesteld behorend tot 13 genera en 9 subfamilies (Agathidinae, Alysinae,
Brachistinae, Braconinae, Cheloninae, Euphorinae, Hormiinae, Opiinae, Rogadinae). Drie
soorten, Aleiodes ( Aleiodes ) esenbeckii (Hartig), Bracon ( Orthobracon ) epitriptus Marshall en

Introduction

The Braconidae constitute one of the most species-rich families of insects
with an estimated 50,000 species worldwide. Among extant groups, the sister
group of the Braconidae is the Ichneumonidae, an equally enormous group
(Sharkey & Wahl 1992, Quicke et al 1999). The vast majority of braconids are
primary parasitoids of other insects, especially upon the larval stages of
Coleoptera, Diptera, and Lepidoptera but also including some hemimetabolus
insects (aphids, Heteroptera, Embiidina). As parasitoids they almost invariably
kill their hosts, although a few only cause their hosts to become sterile and less
active. These beneficial insects play an efficiënt role in biological control
programs all over the world (Matthews 1974, Shaw & Huddleston 1991, Shaw
1995). Parasitoids exert negative effects on their hosts, both at the individual and
population level. This ecological feature can be used to develop biological
control programs, i.e. "the use of living organisms [called biological control
agents] to control the population density or impact on a specific pest organism,

making it less abundant or less damaging than it would otherwise be". More than
a thousand biological control agents are currently in use worldwide and most of
them are parasitoid insects used to control phytophagous insect pests (Wharton
1993, Godfray 1994, Eilenberg et al. 2001). There is no consensus on the number
of braconid subfamilies, but Sharkey (1993) proposed the following 29:
Adeliinae, Agathidinae, Alysiinae, Amicrocentrinae, Aphidiinae, Apozyginae,
Braconinae, Cardiochilinae, Cheloninae, Doryctinae, Dirrhopinae, Euphorinae,
Gnamptodontinae, Helconinae, Homolobinae, Ichneutinae, Khoikhoiinae,
Macrocentrinae, Meteoridiinae, Meteorinae, Microgastrinae, Miracinae,
Neoneurinae, Opiinae, Orgilinae, Rogadinae, Sigalphinae, Trachypetinae, and
Xiphozelinae.

Khorasan (consisting of three different parts: northem, Razavi, and Southern
provinces) is one of the largest Iranian provinces located in East and North-
eastem Iran, having boundaries with Afghanistan and Turkmenistan too. This
paper, which is a part of large project on Iranian Braconidae, deals with the fauna
of Braconidae in this part of Iran.

Material and Methods

Specimens were collected by sweeping net and malaise traps in different
regions of the Khorasan province in Northeastem Iran and vicinity (Kerman,
Golestan, Sistan-Baluchestan, and Semnan provinces). Sampling was conducted
between 2000 and 2007 and the collected specimens were killed with ethyl
acetate or put in alcohol and sent to Dr. V. I. Tobias of Russia for identification.
In addition to the mentioned collecting methods, some preserved specimens in
the collections of Ferdowsi University of Mashhad and Science & Research
Branch were used in this paper. Classification, nomenclature and distributional
data of Braconidae suggested by Yu et al. (2006) have been followed..

Results

In total 21 species from 13 genera and 9 subfamilies were collected from
Khorasan province and vicinity. The list of species is given below.

Discussion

The fauna of Iranian Braconidae was poorly studied, but recently some
valuable faunistic papers were published (Ghahari et al. 2009a, b, c, d). Also,
upon the several collected specimens from different regions of Iran, many other
papers are in preparation. Although the fauna of Khorasan province has been
studied in this paper, this province is the largest region in Iran and therefore the
very diverse fauna of Braconidae will result in many new records and probably
new species are expected to be discovered after more exact surveys. Therefore,
the faunistic works on braconids of Khorasan province can be an important
research topic for the researchers. Also, since Iran is a large country with various
geographical regions and climates, faunistic surveys in different regions of Iran
are necessary for the identification of Iranian Braconidae. A checklist of Iranian
Braconidae was published by Fallahzadeh & Saghaei (2009) without perfect
attention to all the resources on Iranian Braconidae, e.g. Ghahari et al. (2009a, b,
c, d). A checklist is a type of informational aid used to reduce failure by
compensating for potential limits of human memory and attention. Therefore, it is
expected that a checklist contains all the data on the subject and a checklist with
deficiencies is not usable and helpful for researchers. This is the main reason why
all systematic checklists must be prepared by authorized specialists or at least
edited by them carefiilly.

Braconids are one of the powerful parasitoids with an efficiënt role as
biological control in almost all agro-ecosystems; therefore conservation of them
is necessary for their augmentation. Decreasing of pesticide applications in fields
and gardens is one of the effective strategies for supporting natural enemies.
Parasitic wasps operate at a high trophic level and, because of their biology, tend
to be highly specialised, sometimes having very narrow host ranges with at least
local monophagy as a frequent outcome. Despite difficulties in precisely defming
"Habitat" (Elton 1966, Dennis et al. 2003) and picking it out from a continuüm
involving also niche and biotope, considering the performance and interactions of
organisms from that stance is fundamentally important (Southwood 1977).

Although not all insect parasitoids are parasitic wasps (Eggleton & Belshaw
1992, 1993) and, indeed, not all organisms having an essentially identical
fimctional biology are even insects (Eggleton & Gaston 1990), parasitic wasps
are an overwhelmingly large group, comprising about a quarter of the entire
British insect fauna, and this account will be largely focused on them. Apart from
habitat fragmentation, one of the profound changes over the past half century in
Britain has been the increase in insecticides applied in agriculture. As these have
become increasingly sophisticated and insect-specific, fears about their direct
effect on vertebrate life have been largely controllable, and very little research
has been directed towards their effect on off-crop non-target insect populations,
although the phenomenon of pest resurgence (Hardin et al 1995) and economie
concern for the effect of insecticides on within-crop natural enemies of the target
species has resulted in little research relevant to the erop environment. However,
both short-term and long-term studies seem to be lacking on the relative toxicity
to different insect groups (and trophic levels) of low dosages of pesticides, i.e. at
off-crop levels, having disruptive effects on insect development (Shaw 2006). As
a persistent collector of a wide range of the early stages of terrestrial insects and
arachnids from which to rear parasitoids, we have a reasonably rich experience of
"good" and "bad" sites, regarding "good" ones as the places where common and
widespread phytophagous insects have rare parasitoids (rare insects in the host
groups tend also to be present, of course, but it is the parasitoid fauna of the
common and more widespread hosts that is most indicative). Trying to think of
what fairly reliably constitutes this "goodness" in a site of a particular biotope,
we can think of three habitat factors: (i) reasonably large size, (ii) continuity, at
whatever successional stage, and (iii) for parasitoids of folivores, its effective
isolation from conventional arable or orchard agriculture. It seems to us that this
last is a crucial factor in habitat quality that we may be overlooking, and it may
help also to explain why brownfield sites (typically surrounded by buildings, not
arable agriculture) and even suburban gardens rather paradoxically hold good
populations of uncommon insects, sometimes including otherwise very elusive
species of parasitoids (e.g. Owen et al. 1981). An ongoing study comparing
overall parasitoid food webs on organic and conventional farms may provide
some measure of biodiversity loss at this trophic level associated with
agrochemicals, but otherwise too little formal attention has been paid to the
possibility that this is a major problem (Shaw 2006).

I. acmon; how they differ from each other and how
they compare to those of the other two members of the
group, I. neurona and I. shasta (Lepidoptera:
Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti)

Abstract. The male genitalia of Icaricia lupini and I. acmon are figured and described, and
their differences shown, providing a better means for proper identification of these two
morphologically similar species. A comparison of their respective male genitalia to those of the
other two species in the group, namely I. neurona and I. shasta , is carried out and the
differentiating genitalic characters between all four species are shown.

Samenvatting. Verschillen in de mannelijke genitalia van de Noord-Amerikaanse Icaricia
lupini en I. acmon, vergelijking met andere soorten in de groep: I. neurona en I. shasta
(Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti)

De mannelijke genitalia van Icaricia lupini en I. acmon worden afgebeeld en beschreven. De
verschillen vormen een betere basis voor de identificatie van deze morfologisch zeer gelijkende
soorten. Een vergelijking van de genitalia met die van twee andere soorten in deze groep, nl. I.
neurona en I. shasta, toont aan dat deze organen ook hier voor een correcte determinatie kunnen
zorgen.

Résumé. Différences entre les genitalia male des espèces nord-américaines Icaricia lupina
et I. acmon, et comparaison avec les genitalia males de deux autres espèces de ce groupe, 7.
neurona et 7 shasta (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae, Polyommatiti)

Les genitalia males d' Icaricia lupini et 7 acmon sont fïgurés et décrits. Les différences trouvées
constituent une base pour une meilleure détermination des deux espèces qui sont extrêmement
semblables morphologiquement. La comparaison de ces genitalia avec ceux d'7. neurona et 7
shasta montre que ces organes peuvent être utilisés ici aussi pour une détermination correcte.

Introduction

The males of Icaricia lupini (Boisduval, 1852) and Icaricia acmon
(Westwood & Hewitson, 1852), two often syntopic, closely related and quite
similar N American butterflies, almost always have been separated from each
other and identified on the basis of wing characters alone (Emmel & Emmel
1973, Howe 1975, Tilden & Smith 1986, Opler & Wright 1999). This method is
applicable to the majority of specimens, but often there are some that cannot be
safely placed, either because they are wom, or because the two taxa sometimes
look morphologically strikingly similar. This is reflected by the fact that
specimens of these two species, received from entomologists that are familiar
with them, were often found to have been misidentified. In Scott (1986),
however, there are figures and descriptions of the male and female genitalia of
both these species, but the single diagnostic character given for the male genitalia
has been found to be inconstant and there fore unreliable. The male genitalic

components that are being figured in Scott’ s work relate to two examples of I
acmon and one of I. lupini, all showing in dorsal view what Scott refers to as an
uncus with a “cleft”, the ensuing branches being normally referred to by others as
labides. It is being stated by Scott that in I. acmon the uncus cleft is “deep”,
whereas in I. lupini it is shallower (“uncus cleft only a short distance”). The
second example of I. acmon that is being figured, however, has a cleft that is no
deeper than the one figured for I. lupini , and all specimens of both these species
that the present author has checked shared clefts of about equal depth. In view of
all this it appeared desirable to provide new figures and descriptions of the male
genitalia of these two species, and to point out the constant differences that may
always be useful for the proper identification of these two butterflies.

The male genitalia in the genus Icaricia

The male genitalia of butterflies belonging to this genus [Nabokov 1944: type
species Icaricia icarioides (Boisduval, 1852)] clearly place them in the sub-tribe
Polyommatiti, having slender, oblong, upright-set valvae that end distally in a
doublé process, a strongly excavated tegumen, a v-shaped ftirca with long and
slender branches, a long and slender vinculum and upright-set labides. The
aedeagus is long, slender and distally pointed, somewhat reminiscent of that of
butterflies in the Palaearctic genus Aricia, but the membranous area of the
dorsum of its distal part is fumished with minute dorso-lateral spines, this being a
feature absent in Aricia. Both I. lupini as well as I. acmon belong to a group
within Icaricia that also includes I. shasta (W. H. Edwards, 1 862) and I. neurona
(Skinner, 1892), all sharing similar types of male genitalia, all of which are
somewhat differentiated from those of I. icarioides , the type species of the genus.

Male genitalia of L lupini

Dorso-distal process of valva fan shaped, distally wide, and hearing minute
teeth; ventro-distal process rounded and toothless; inner face of valva without the
pronounced longitudinal fold present in most Polyommatiti. Labides large, with
pronounced mid-dorsal triangular prominence, and tapering distally to a
rounded point. Falces wide, short and distally blunted. Post-zonal part of
aedeagus shorter than pre-zonal part (Figs. 1-7, 15-20, 24).

Male genitalia of L acmon

As in I. lupini , but labides considerably smaller, being about half as wide
as in I. lupini , and having shorter dorsal prominence placed closer to distal
end. (Figs. 8-14,21-23,25).

The male genitalia of the other members of the group

Icaricia neurona (Skinner, 1892)

Genitalia of this morphologically different butterfly very similar to those of I.
acmon , but overall smaller, and with shorter, less elongate valva. It is
interesting to note that the morphologically different I. acmon and I. neurona
have closer affinities in their male genitalia than do the morphologically similar I.
lupini and I. acmon (Figs. 26-32).

Icaricia shasta (W. H. Edwards, 1 862)

Genitalia differ from those of other members of group as follows: valva
wider, with heavier ventro-distal process; dorso-distal process not fan
shaped, but instead with parallel dorsal and ventral edges, ending in narrow,
rounded distal tip, fumished with minute teeth. Labides with less tapering distal
end and with pronounced dorsal prominence in form of blunt spine. Post-
zonal part of aedeagus about equal in length to pre-zonal part. This species
is structurally the most differentiated in the group (Figs. 33-39).

Australisch mierkevertje, Paratillus carus
(Coleoptera: Cleridae)

Abstract. A new beetle species for the Belgian fauna: Paratillus carus (Coleoptera:
Cleridae)

Paratillus carus (Newman, 1840) was collected for the first time in Belgium at Hamme (Oost-
Vlaanderen) on the 12th of June 2006. This Australian clerid beetle became established in
England and France during the last century. In France, it extends its territory rather quickly, so
we may expect that it will appear soon in the adjacent countries too. P. carus is a predator of
various xylophagous insects, especially of some Lyctus species.

Résumé. Une nouvelle espèce de coléoptère pour la faune beige: Paratillus carus
(Coleoptera: Cleridae)

Paratillus carus (Newman, 1840) a été capturé pour la première fois en Belgique a Hamme
(Oost- Vlaanderen) le 12 juin 2006. Ce cléride d’origine australienne s’est acclimaté en
Angleterre et en France dans le courant du siècle demier. En quelques décennies 1’espèce s’est
répandue sur une grande partie du territoire ffan9ais. On peut s’attendre a ce qu’elle apparaisse
aussi, et prochainement, dans les pays limitrophes. P. carus est un prédateur d’insectes
xylophages variés, notamment hótes de certaines espèces de Lyctus.

Zusammenfassung. Eine neue Kaferart fur die belgische Fauna: Paratillus carus
(Coleoptera: Cleridae)

Paratillus carus (Newman, 1 840) wurde zum ersten Mal in Belgien gefangen in Hamme (Oost-
Vlaanderen) am 12. Juni 2006. Die ursprüngliche Heimat von diesem Buntkafer ist Australien.
Er wurde j edoch im voriges Jahrhundert nach England und Frankreich verschleppt, wo er sich
gut akklimatisiert hat. In Frankreich hat das Kaferchen sein neues Areal ziemlich schnell
ausgebreitet. Also kann man erwarten dass er in absehbarer Zeit auch in den Nachbarlanderen
auftauchen wird. P. carus ist ein Rauber der spezialisiert ist auf Borkenkafer, ins besondere auf
manche Lyctus Arten.

Inleiding

In de vooravond van 12 juni 2006 zat de familie Pletinck in de tuin te Hamme
Sint-Anna (Oost-Vlaanderen) nog lekker na te genieten van een mooie zomerdag.
Op zeker ogenblik kwam uit het niets een insectje aangezoemd en plofte neer op
de volle pick-nicktafel. De vrouw des huizes toverde snel een vliegenmepper te
voorschijn en gaf het beestje een fikse tik. Bij nader toekijken bleek het te gaan
om een ongewoon kevertje. René Pletinck, al vele jaren een enthousiast
insectenliefhebber, had de gelukkige reflex om het gekneusde kevertje te redden
voor zijn collectie. Met de klassieke keverliteratuur determineerde hij het diertje
als Tarsostenus univittatus (Rossi, 1792). Toen ik onlangs een deel van de
kevercollectie van René Pletinck mocht bekijken bleek vrij vlug dat het hier
eigenlijk ging om een vreemde nieuwkomer, nl. om de zeer verwante Paratillus
carus (Newman, 1840).

Beschrijving

Cilindervormig kevertje met grijze, opstaande beharing. Lengte: 6,5 mm. Kop
zwart. Bovenkaken roodbruin. Sprieten: eerste 4 leden roodbruin, de 7 volgende
zwart met 3 verdikte eindleden. Halsschild vooraan met zwarte zoom, de rest
roodbruin. Dekschilden glanzend blauwzwart, net voorbij de helft met ivoor-
witte dwarsband; in de voorste helft met stevige puntrijen die achteraan
verdwijnen. Achterlijf zwart. Poten bruin; schenen en tarsen iets donkerder.

Van P. carus zijn verschillende kleurvarianten beschreven. Corporaal (1949:
156) onderscheidt 3 varianten met rode en 2 met zwarte kop. Bij het mannetje
wordt het achterlijf haast volledig bedekt door de dekschilden; bij het wijfje
blijven de laatste 3 tergieten zichtbaar (Menier & Burle 1985: 9-15). Het
exemplaar van René Pletinck is een mannetje van de var. zonatus (Blanchard,
1852). Het exemplaar met de roodbruine kop en dito halsschild, afgebeeld door
du Chatenet (2000: 157) stelt de typische vorm voor.

Areaaluitbreider

P. carus hoort eigenlijk thuis in Australië, Tasmanië, Nieuw-Caledonië en
Sumatra (Winkler 1961: 67). Met het toenemend handelsverkeer bereikte het
kevertje in de vorige eeuw ook andere werelddelen. In Europa werd P. carus
voor het eerst ontdekt in Engeland. In november 1933 werden aldaar 3
exemplaren verzameld te Huil op Tasmaanse eik (. Eucalyptus sp.) bij een
importfirma van timmerhout (Fischer 1944: 133). Dit hout kwam uit Australië en
was aangetast door boorkevertjes {Lyctus sp.). In juli 1938 werden opnieuw
kevertjes ontdekt in een Londense opslagplaats van hout. Weldra volgden nieuwe
vondsten, o.a. te Birmingham in september 1942, te Liverpool in oktober 1943 en
te Glasgow in januari 1944. De vangsten hadden meestal plaats op Australisch
timmerhout, aangetast door Lyctus- soorten. Bij een vondst op houten kratten,

afkomstig uit Australië, bleek het hout ook aangetast te zijn door Lyctus
brunneus (Stephens, 1830) (Fischer 1944: 133). Sedert 1940 wordt P. carus ook
regelmatig gevonden in insectenvallen die opgesteld staan om schadelijke
houtkevers weg te vangen. Tegenwoordig behoort P. carus integraal tot de
Engelse keverfauna.

Op het Europese vasteland dook P. carus voor het eerst op in Zuidwest-
Frankrijk. Menier & Burle (1985: 9-15) signaleerden een vrouwtje te Fraysinnet
(dep. Lot) op 6 augustus 1983. De soort bleek al vlug in staat om ook de
aanpalende departementen te koloniseren (Chapelin-Viscardi 2009: 365-372). In
2002 was het kevertje al gesignaleerd in 13 zuidelijke departementen, Daarna
rukte het verder op naar het noorden. Op 5 augustus werd 1 exemplaar gevangen
in een houtzagerij te Vineuil-Saint-Firmin (dep. Oise) (Bocquillon 2008: 255),
dit op nauwelijks 100 km van de Belgische grens. Het was te verwachten dat P.
carus dus ook in ons land zou opduiken.

In Frankrijk wordt de opmars van P. carus streng opgevolgd. Er zijn reeds
een 30-tal publicaties over verschenen (Chapelin-Viscardi 2009: 365-372, 2010:
165-166). In 2009 was het Australisch mierkevertje al bekend uit 28
departementen. In de buurt van de Belgische vindplaats ligt een houtzagerij
waarvan nogal wat hout wordt ingevoerd uit Vierzon (dep. Cher). Vreemd
genoeg zijn uit het departement Cher nog geen vondsten van de soort bekend.

Buiten zijn oorspronklijk areaal is P. carus nu ingeburgerd in Engeland en
Frankrijk en de soort heeft zich ook genesteld in Califomië en Zuid-Afrika
(Gerstmeier 1998: 241).

Levenswijze

P. carus staat bekend als een actieve vijand van kleine xylofage insecten,
zowel in bossen als in houtzagerijen (Frogatt 1924: 173). Door de export van
Australische houtproducten is de soort gaan evolueren tot een kosmopoliet. In
Frankrijk hebben de larven en imago’s het vooral gemunt op boorkevers
(Bostrichidae) maar mogelijk ook op bepaalde schorskevers (Scolytidae), o.a. op
Hypoborus ficus Erichson, 1836. De activiteitsperiode van de imago’s loopt er
van mei tot augustus (Chapelin-Viscardi 2009: 365-372).

Bij onze zuiderburen leeft P. carus zowel op loof- als op naaldhout. Als
broedbomen komen voorlopig de volgende houtsoorten in aanmerking: berk
(. Betula ), haagbeuk ( Carpinus betulus), tamme kastanje ( Castanea sativa ), eik
(Querucs), beuk (. Fagus sylvatica), walnoot ( Juglans regio), vijgenboom ( Ficus
carica ), es (. Fraxinus ), plataan {Platanus), kerselaar {Prunus avium), pruimelaar
{Prunus domestica), druivelaar {Vitis vinifera), spar {Picea) en den {Pinus)
(Chapelin-Viscardi 2009: 365-372).

Besluit

Het Australisch mierkevertje heeft zich in Engeland en Frankrijk vlot
ingeburgerd. Het is te verwachten dat deze nieuwkomer weldra ook de Franse
buurlanden zal koloniseren. In het belang van de bosbouw is het aangeraden om

de opmars van P. carus nauwkeurig te blijven volgen. Het is immers nog niet
duidelijk welke rol dit kevertje zal gaan spelen in het Europese ecosysteem.

Coleophora trigeminella (Lepidoptera: Coleophori-
dae) en Belgique

Samenvatting. Coleophora trigeminella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) in België
Op 11 oktober 2007 werd een zak van Coleophora trigeminella Fuchs, 1881 (Lepidoptera:
Coleophoridae) op Crataegus monogyna L. (Rosaceae) gevonden in een klein, vochtig bosdal te
Crupet (provincie Namen). Het is de eerste maal dat deze soort uit België wordt vermeld. Details
over de levenswijze en de verspreiding worden gegeven.

Abstract. Coleophora trigeminella (Lepidoptera: Coleophoridae) in Belgium
On 11 October 2007 a case of Coleophora trigeminella Fuchs, 1881 (Lepidoptera:
Coleophoridae) was found on Crataegus monogyna L. (Rosaceae) in a damp forest glen at
Crupet (province of Namur). It is the fïrst record of this species for the Belgian fauna. Details on
the biology and distribution of the moth are provided.

Le 1 1 octobre 2007, un fourreau agé de Coleophora est photographié sur une
feuille de Crataegus monogyna L. a Crupet (commune de Assesse, province de
Namur). D’après son aspect particulier, le support sur lequel il est fixé et F avis
des spécialistes consultés (W. Ellis et G. Baldizzone), ce fourreau est attribuable
a Coleophora trigeminella Fuchs, 1881, une espèce non encore signalée en
Belgique selon le catalogue en ligne de De Prins & Steeman (2010). Le site
d’observation est localisé dans le Condroz namurois, sur une pente d’exposition
sud, a une altitude d’environ 240 m. II occupe la partie inférieure d’un étroit
vallon creusé par le ruisseau de Vövesène, minuscule cours d’eau tributaire du
Bocq (bassin hydrographique de la Meuse). A eet endroit le vallon baigne dans
une ambiance forestière plutöt humide, la végétation étant constituée de
boisements spontanés (avec notamment Fraxinus excelsior) et de plantations
variées (. Populus x canadensis , Picea abies , Larix sp., etc.); le sous-bois
luxuriant comporte notamment de trés grosses aubépines ( Crataegus monogyna
surtout).

Coleophora trigeminella est largement distribué en Europe et au Proche-
Orient (Baldizzone & van der Wolf 2010); il est mentionné également du Maroc
(Vives Moreno 1988). Sa présence a été établie dans de nombreux pays
européens: Albanië, Allemagne, Autriche, Croatie, Danemark, Espagne,
Finlande, France, Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, Hongrie, lies Britanniques, lies
Anglo-Normandes, Italië, Lettonie, Lituanie, Norvège, Pays-Bas, Portugal,
République Tchèque, Roumanie, Slovaquie, Slovénie, Suède, Suisse, Turquie
(Ko9ak & Kemal 2009; Baldizzone & van der Wolf 2010; Lesar & Govedic
2010). Sur les Hes Britanniques, 1’espèce est trés localisée et a surtout été

observée dans le sud-est de 1’Angleterre (Emmet et al. 1996, Hantsmoths 2010).
En Allemagne, Coleophora trigeminella semble inégalement distribuée, son
occurrence étant signalée dans les "Lander" de Hesse, Rhénanie-Palatinat,
Rhénanie-du-Nord-Westphalie, Bade-Wurtemberg, Bavière, Thuringe, Saxe et
Saxe-Anhalt (Tolasch 2005), auxquels s’ajoute la Sarre oü une localité est
cartographiée par Wemo (2009). En France, sa présence a été mentionnée pour la
première fois par Leraut (1980) sur base d’un spécimen provenant des Hautes-
Alpes identifié par G. Baldizzone. Au Grand-Duché de Luxembourg, deux
occurrences sont répertoriées (M. Hellers, in litt.). Aux Pays-Bas, 1’espèce est
considérée comme rare et n’est recensée que de quatre localités dont deux dans le
Limbourg méridional (Huisman & Koster 1996; Muus 2010). La proximité de
ces demières rendait la découverte de Coleophora trigeminella logiquement
prévisible en Belgique.

II s’agit d’une espèce monovoltine hivernant au stade larvaire. Discrets et
rarement observés, les imagos sont actifs essentiellement en juin, mais leur
période de vol peut s’étendre jusque début aoüt (Kuchlein & Bot 2010). La larve
se développe au sein d’un fourreau mobile sur diverses rosacées arborescentes
telles que Crataegus monogyna , C. laevigata , Malus sylvestris, Prunus spinosa,

P. aviurn, Sorbus aucuparia , S. aria, Amelanchier sp., Cotoneaster sp. (Emmet et
al. 1996, Ellis 2007). Toutefois, d’après Hering (1957), ce Coleophora se
rencontre avant tout sur Sorbus aucuparia et nettement plus rarement sur les
autres arbustes précités. La femelle pond ses oeufs isolément sur les feuilles de la
plante höte; la chenille éclot en fin juillet a aoüt, parfois encore en septembre
selon certains auteurs. La jeune chenille commence rapidement a se nourrir en
creusant Eépiderme de la face inférieure de la feu i 11e, occasionnant une petite
mine de quelques millimètres a peine. Cette portion minée est aussitöt excisée
pour la constitution du premier fourreau, dont les éléments sont progressivement
assemblés a 1’aide de la soie produite par 1’extrémité abdominale de la larve.
Celle-ci continuera a s’alimenter au cours de 1’automne et, après la diapause
hivernale, reprendra son activité en mars-avril. Elle se chrysalide au sein de son
fourreau en mai. Ce fourreau a une longueur défmitive comprise entre 5 et 6 mm
et une coloration variant de brun rougeatre a brun grisatre (Toll 1962; Emmet et.
al. 1996). II a une forme tubulaire, avec la partie antérieure fortement coudée
(évoquant un globicéphale) et son extrémité postérieure généralement trivalvée,
précédée d’une légère constriction pré-apicale. La position du fourreau, presque
parallèle au support, est caractéristique (Hering 1957, Toll 1962, Ellis 2007). Au
Japon, Coleophora uniformis Oku, 1965 a un fourreau larvaire trés voisin sur
Sorbus alnifolia (Oku 1965).

Coleophora trigeminella s’ajoute aux 105 espèces de Coleophoridae
recensées a ce jour en Belgique, cette familie étant Tune des plus riches parmi les
microlépidoptères (De Prins & Steeman 2010). Et il en reste sans doute un
certain nombre a trouver, même si des progrès ont été réalisés depuis le catalogue
de De Prins (1998): pas moins de 9 espèces ont été ajoutées a la faune beige au
cours de la demière décennie, la demière en date étant Coleophora conyzae
Zeiler, 1 868 (Wullaert 2010).

Dit 20ste LIKONA jaarboek bevat 8 originele studies, waarvan er één volledig aan een insect
gewijd is: de beekschaatsenrijder ( Aquarius najas). Waar deze soort in 1978 nog in alle Vlaamse
provincies voorkwam beperkte de verspreiding zich in 1989 tot Antwerpen en Limburg. Momenteel
is de soort enkel nog uit Limburg bekend van een klein aantal populaties in de gemeenten Lommel,
Hamont-Achel, Neerpelt, Bocholt, Kinrooi en Dilsen-Stokkem.

In de vallei van de Abeek werden intensief ongewervelden geïnventariseerd uit de orden
spinnen, sprinkhanen en krekels, wantsen, vlinders, libellen, vliegen, kevers, mieren, wespen en
bijen. In het totaal werden sinds 2004 niet minder dan 40.700 dieren verzameld en dertig
deskundigen determineerden 2.040 soorten. Met nog wat bijkomende losse waarnemingen werden in
de Abeek 2.156 ongewervelde soorten vastgesteld.

Het jaarboek bevat verder nog artikels over zwammen, planten, vissen en vogels. Ook het
gebruikelijke literatuuroverzicht van artikels over de natuur in verschillende publicaties ontbreekt
niet; daarin worden 13 artikels over insecten vermeld. Een jaarverslag van elk van de zeven actieve
werkgroepen sluit dit jaarboek af. De belangrijkste activiteit van de Werkgroep Ongewervelden is
het inventariseren van insecten in natuurgebieden, zoals de Abeek, de Limburgse bosreservaten, De
Lieteberg te Zutendaal, de Akkerranden te Heers, de Sahara te Lommel enz.

Zoals gebruikelijk is dit jaarboek zeer keurig uitgegeven, prachtig geïllustreerd en biedt het vele
uren lees- en kijkplezier voor al wie in de natuur geïnteresseerd is.
