Rice. The part of the Albert R. Mann Library, where it serves the research and teaching of poultry science at Cornell University. It is hoped that through its facilities the Rice Library may be of maximum usefulness to poultry scientists every- where. The Rice Library is to consist of "books, magazines, literature, films, photographs and similar material dealing with all types of poultry, including game birds". It is hoped that gifts will supple- ment purchases from income of the endowment fund to an extent which will permit development of a comprehensive collection in these fields. It is expected that the Rice Library will issue publications relating to the literature of poultry science as opportunities may occur. This is the second of the series. Additional copies may be obtained at two dollars each. Address communications to: RICE MEMORIAL POULTRY LIBRARY Albert R. Mann Library Ithaca, New York JAMES E. RICE MEMORIAL POULTRY LIBRARY PUBLICATION NUMBER 2 BOOKS ON POULTRY HUSBANDRY Compiled by Lucille N. Wright ESERVED FOR ERCNCE FADING B*I TAKEN LIBRARY James E. Rice Memorial Poultry Library Cornell University, Ithaca, New York 1961 2: Preface This checklist identifies some 2000 editions of books and pamphlets written in English on the keeping of domesticated birds for economic purposes. It is a compilation of the holdings on this subject in the Albert R. Mann Library of the New York State Colleges of Agriculture and Home Economics at Cornell University, the New York Public Library, and the Library of the United States Department of Agriculture. The user of this bibliography may also wish to refer to some of the earlier works of similar character listed on page 4. No attempt has been made to incorporate in this work publications listed in such earlier bibliographies, that do not appear in the three libraries upon which this work is based. Not included are theses, microfilms, periodicals, and serials. Also eliminated are lesson plans from "poultry schools"; proceedings of poultry congresses; premium lists and programs of poultry exhibitions; govern- ment documents (state and national); and publications of colleges, uni- versities, and commercial companies. Books on game birds, on ornamental and cage birds, and on cock fighting are also excluded. Theses presented for advanced degrees at land-grant colleges and uni- versities in the United States from 1896 to 1950 were indexed in Publica- tion Number One of the James E. Rice Memorial Poultry Library. It is hoped that categories of poultry literature omitted from these first two Publications may be dealt with in future issues of the series. Many of the books included in this bibliography were printed during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when publishers often did not differentiate between editions and printings. To avoid ambiguity, edition numbers are usually omitted in favor of copyright dates, or in their absence, publishers' dates. When a book is not dated but does include an edition number, the latter is used. This is especially true of British publications. The New York Public Library collected poultry literature intensively only until the early 1930's. Information about the collections of the New York Public Library and the Library of the United States Department of Agriculture was obtained from photostats of their subject catalog cards earlv in 1956. Mann Library holdings are included approximately to June 1959. Each title was checked with the Library of Congress Catalog of Printed Cards and its several continuations. As a result, some editions are listed which are not in the collections of the three libraries noted above. Works in the Mann Library are marked with an asterisk. It is interested in acquiring titles it lacks, whether or not they appear in this checklist. OTHER PUBLISHED LISTS OF POULTRY BOOKS Hawks, Emma Beatrice A bibliography of poultry.
