Fighting Eagles Have Strong Secison

After a disappointing 3-7 season last year, the Eagles soared to a 4-0 record by the end of the fourth week of the football season and outscoring their op- ponents 1 08-40. However, as the competition began to toughen-up, IBC's luck began to run out. Inevitably, the Eagles "tackJers" completed an optimistically suc- cessful season with a 5-5 record.

Team captains Ted Brady, Paul Tanzillo and Tom Rogowski instilled a winning attitude and optimism into the Eagle team. It appears that this type of win- ning philosophy will be continued for some years to come, since a great majority of this year's starters will be returning next year.

One impressive statistic of this year's team is that the Eagles outscored their opponents 203- 1 79. Thus, the defense and offense combined to produce the most successful season in recent years.

Cross Country Takes NIIC Title

The IBC Cross Country team enjoyed another suc- cessful season in the 1 98 1 -82 year. The Eagle's suc- cess could be traced to their intercollegiate in- vitational record. They won the Cougar Invitational at St. Xavier, the Spartan Invitational and their seventh consecutive NIIC Conference Title.

Their enthusiasm and pride in striving for ex- cellerce, and the leadership qualities of Senior- Captain jack Marchese greatly attributed to the marathoners success.

The winning tradition of this young squad was led by Sophomore Matt Kavanaugh (MVP) and Freshman Dan Tikusis (Rookie of the Year). Matt Kavanaugh set new time records for IBC's Cross Country team. Ul- timately, his success earned him possible All- American status for the 1 98 1 -82 season. Coach Cole- man, in a final comment on this season, stated that the team's hard work in practice indicated great potential for the future; in fact, "all of the freshman runners could be possible All-Americans".

The IBC Spikers Rank 4th

The IBC Women's Volleyball team capped off a 32- 4 regular season record with a fourth place finish in the NCAA Division III tournament. Conference cham- pions completed their season with an overall mark of 34-6 and a 6-0 conference record.

On August 25th Coach DiMatteo stated that she hoped to be in the National Intercollegiate Volleyball tournament when the end of the sccison was at hand, in late November, DiMatteo and her nine member squad learned that their team had earned I of 1 0 bids awarded to teams for the volleyball Nationals.

Before the tournament, the Eagles had diligently worked in practice to prepare themselves. As they commenced with Regionals, IBC had the "home court" advantage. However, in route to the finals the Eagles knocked off 5th ranked Grove City, P.A. and the upset 3rd seated Sonoma State, C.A. on successive nights to capture the Midwest regionals.

When IBC traveled to Maryville, Tenn. their team spirit was shown. The IBC squad proved that they were worthy of the trip by only losing to the 2nd ranked Juanita College. The match took 2 hours to play and the outcome wasn't decided until the final two points were scored. Ultimately, the spikers fin- ished fourth overall at the finals.

Cagers Have Trying Season

When IBC's Men's Basketball team took to the court this season, head coach Tony LaScala knew that a lack of height and experience would be the determining factors for this season. Unfortunately, his premenision was correct. The Eagle cagers ended a very mediocre season with an overall record of 9- 1 6.

Consistent performances by Juniors Bob Rapp, Warren Callahan and Terry O'Donnell, and Freshman Don Navigate helped to create an atmosphere of ex- citement for the IBC cheering section throughout the entire season. Their performances often kept the Eagles in striking range in many games.

This year's squad was very young with only Senior — Captain Russell Travis quarterbacking the team from his backcourt (guard) position. Thus, next season's team will have an added dimension of expe- rience built-in to its blueprints for victory.

The 1 98 1 -82 Eagle women's basketball team used a balanced scoring attack, a tough zone defense, and a 1 4 game winning streak to wind up with an overall record of 1 6-3. However, despite their strong finish and a 1 3th place ranking in the nation, the Eagles did not receive their second consecutive bid to the NCAA Division III National tournament. Nevertheless this years squad can be proud of their accomplishments and overall record.

Some of the contributing elements, which lead to the most successful season in IBC's history, was the outstanding performances of Rita Schuiz, Marie Soltis, Judy Yost and Laura Martinek. Moreover, in recogni- tion of their fine conference play, Rita Schuiz and Judy Yost were elected to the NIIC All-Conference team.

At the conclusion of this season. Head Coach Dave Swanson commented, "we were a 'team' in every sense of the word." Furthermore, he stated that he was looking forward to next season since his 11- member squad was returning in full; therefore, an extra dimension of experience would be added to their quest for victory.

Eagles Take To The Water

When the 1981 -'82 swimming season started, Coach |im Smith impressed upon his swimmers the ideology that they swam for their own personal enjoy- ment. However, the JBC men's and women's swim teams also enjoyed a winning season.

From the men's squad, they finished the seeison with a record of 8- 1 . Five swimmers ultimately quali- fied for nationals — Gerry Kilroy, Dan Flynn, Chris West, Steve Becker and Mike Sheridan.

The women's team also had a good season, although their 4-5 record argues to the contrary. Strong performances by Corlette Bartholmey, Tricia Madden, jeannie Stablein and Colleen Collins enabled the women's squad to have a fine season.

Finally, Co-Captain Steve Becker commented that this season was like a "social fraternity", in that every- one "provided a level of intensity which set an atmos- phere to do your best" in every meet.

Women Finish 2nd in Conference Play

The Women's Softball team continued to illustrate strong and consistent play in the 1 982 secison. The young squad compiled a NCAA Div. Ill recorded of 21-10 and posted an overall record of 23- 1 2 for this season.

The squad was lead by Sophomore Rita Schultz, Junior |udy Yost, and Seniors Sue Milnamow and Deb Wagner. While Sue and Deb pitched IBC took victory after victory by letting their bats do the talking to drive the winning runs home.

When the end of the season approached the Eagle squad, the NCAA granted a bid to them to the NCAA Div III West Regional Tournament. Unfortunately, IBC ran into a tough Aurora Club and they suffered two heart-breaking defeats at the hands of Aurora, thus eliminating IBC from tournament competition.

The Eagles will be returning most of their players for the next season, thus the potential for another win- ning season is favorable. One final note about the IBC women's softball team is that in the past three sea- sons, they have posted a 53-24 record. This record translates to an outstanding percentage of .688. Therefore, there is no doubt that they will continue their winning tradition.

The IBC Varsity Baseball squad combined a strong offensive attack with an impressive pitching rotation as they took the field for 1 982 season. When the final strike was called to end the season, the Eagles would post an impressive Conference record of 1 6-9. How- ever, despite this mark, the Eagles ended their secison in 2nd place behind Rockford College. The overall re- cord, which includes the Southern trip, was 23-2 1 - 1 .

Seniors |oe Kolar, Mike Powers, MVP Mike Suglich, and freshman Ed Kolar lead the offensive attack for the Eagles. Most impressive though, was the recording- breaking performance by Mike Suglich. Suglich hit for an average over .400, stole almost 25 bases, and played a strong defensive right field position. Suglich is a candidate for All-American status for his outstand- ing and aggressive play on the diamond.

From the mound, Mike Gallina, Don Wilson and Se- nior Scott Carlson posted fine performances to enable the Eagles to be competitive all year. Scott Carlson finished the season with the best pitching record, win- ning five games and only losing one.

The area which plagued the Eagles this season was defense. In many critical times during the season the Squad failed to deliver strong defensive play. How- ever, Coach John Ostrowski feels that since a great majority of his squad were underclassmen, experi- ence gained this season will be seen in their play next season.

IBC Regains NIIC Title

The IBC track and field season began on January 30th and ended with the NCAA Div. Ill National Championships on May 29th. During that period of time IBC competed in over 1 5 Invitationals including Nationals and the Northern Illinois Intercollegiate Conference Championship.

IBC qualified five men for the Nationals. They were )im Kavanaugh, |im Socha, Kurt Keppner, Stanley Evans and Anthony McCain. These five individuals helped to lead IBC to many successful team victories. McCain and Kavanaugh were honored as Co-MVP's, while Stanley Evans and Don Toennies were named Rookies-of-the-Year.

Initially, many new records were set by the track- sters this year. Andy Podyma tossed the shot-put for a new record, while Anthony McCain in the triple jump and Jim Kavanaugh in the 5000 meter race, each captured new IBC school records. Secondly, and most importantly, IBC regained the NIIC title.

Spirit Rains On Homecoming

Despite rather unpleasant fall weather loyal Eagle fans packed the grandstands on alumni field, to see their team battle the Loras Duhawks. The Eagle squad put forth a gallant effort but they were not able to overcome their opponents. The halftime festivities including the IBC pom pons and cheerleaders were climaxed by the announcement of the court with Ted Brady and Lori Esser being chosen to reign as king and queen of Homecoming 1981.

In the evening the scene switched to the elegant Arlington Park Hilton and the sounds of "Unity". Cou- ples received an extra treat — complimentary tickets to the Cinderella Rockafella discoteque also located in the hotel. Homecoming 1 98 1 while not beginning on a winning note, surely ended on one.

IBC Welcomes Freshmen

Making Friends, registering for classes, and meet- ing the faculty and staff are just a few of the traumas that face incoming freshmen at the beginning of the school year. In an effort to make this experience a little easier for all involved, IBC offers a freshman orienta- tion program during the week before cleisses start.

This years program, run by Larry Baker, was done a little differently than in past years. All of the freshman, both residents and commuters were housed on cam- pus during the program. This gave commuters a taste of dorm life. Also different this year, registration pro- cesses were complete during the orientation with the help of counselors and advisors. Short seminars on life planning, classroom skills, value clarification, fire safty, and assertiveness training were held during the week. SAB and RHA worked together to plan the social activities to the program. Those events held in- cluded, a coffee house, an ice cream social, a dance in the Rice Center, an outdoor band concert, and a day of the orientation was a day of fun of games at Camp Greenwood which was followed by an outdoor mass.

Dancers Help Fight Hunger

Second Annual Dance-A-Thon Raises 14,000 for the second year IBC showed that its unity included the community. On November 1 3 the Junior Class, led by Cathy McCarthy sponsored a dance-a-thon to raise funds to combat World Hunger. Entertainment was provided for dancers and spectators by Tom Chapin, brother of the late Harry Chapin, and the Barlow Brothers as well as the sound system. The event proved successful, raising over 1 4,000 for the charity and leaving hopes high for next year.

On Sunday October 25th, IBC's moms and their daughters gathered at St. Procopius Abbey to begin the annual Mother-Daughter Brunch. During the course of th Mass, the girls presented their Mothers with a carnation as a sign of love and peace. Next, everyone moved to the cafeteria for a brunch pro- vided by Saga. The event was sponsored by the Ondrak Hall government — Marci Svec, Janis Vacca, Patti Kiss and Patti Pindak.

This years event was slightly different with it being held in the Social Center instead of the Rice Center. Since the Social Center is carpeted a dance floor was rented for the activity. The highlight of the evening was a dance contest for which prizes were given.

Baccalaureate Mass

The class of 1 982 said its final farewell before grad- uation, to each other and to IBC community at the Baccalaureate Mass. Also the seniors asked for the Lord's blessing as they each pursued their individual careers.

In the concelebrated mass, Abbot Valetine stressed the idea of being chosen by God for a certain task. This idea exemplified the meaning of education at IBC.

Music for the mass was provided by both the chorus and a guitar ensemble. The tenor of the hymns was both classical and modern.

After the Eucharist a slide show arranged by Tom Corso, Bernadette Boyce, Nancy Tosto, and Rita Hughes portrayed scenes of the class' fouryear career at Illinois Benedictine.

The prevailing sadness was overcome by thoughts of the good times locked in the memories of each senior. Another memory was added following the cel- ebration, the pub, allowed the graduates to gather with their friends to reminisce together one last time.

Graduates Start Anew

The 89th commencement exercises, held on May 23, 1982, culminated the senior class' years at IBC.

After the graduates, led by Dr. Weslowski had entered the Rice Center, Dr. Becker intro- duced the student speaker Tom Dolan. Next). Earl Burrell of PPG Industries discussed the importance of determination in setting and reaching goals.

The graduates then received their diplomas and their de- grees were conferred upon them by Chancellor Valentine. Honorary degrees were also given to two trustees of the col- lege as well as Dr. Burrell.

The ceremony concluded A'ith the former seniors leaving .vith mixed feelings of joy, sad- less and relief.

As we finish our last yearbook as IBC alumni, we would like to thank our competent staff who worked so hard to complete this book. Our special thanks to Mary Farrell, Margaret Patterson, Therese Kawaiko, Donna Machaiica, and Janis Vacca who worked on the book even into the summer. We hope that this yearbook will always bring back memories of all the good times you have had at IBC.
