Youngman Biographical Note Phillip M. Youngman received his M.A. in Zoology at the Univer- sity of Kansas. He has worked as a marine biologist in the West In- dies and as a mammalogist with the U.S. Army in Korea. He has taught at the University of Tampa, Florida and at St. Patrick’s Col- lege, Ottawa. Mr. Youngman is a leading researcher into the sys- tematics and distribution of mammals in the western Arctic. Among the numerous scientific papers which he has contributed to various journals are studies on the ecology of Korean rodents, the systematics of pocket gophers, the systematics and distribution of arctic mammals, the systematics of insular populations of voles, and the serology of Arctic Ground Squirrels. A member of several scientific societies, Mr. Youngman was Associate Editor (Mammalogy) of the Canadian Field Naturalist from 1961-1970. He has been Curator of Mammals at the Na- tional Museum of Natural Sciences since 1960. Preface The /nternational Code of Zoological Nomenclature’ and the Inter- national Council of Museums (A Preliminary List of Catalogues of Type Specimens in Zoology and Palaeontology by A. W. F. Ban- fieldt) have recommended that institutions possessing type speci- mens publish lists of this material. The format of the present list is similar to that used in Herpeto- logical Type-Specimens in the University of Illinois Museum of Nat- ural History by H. M. Smith et al.+ The list does not attempt to record the current status of the names based upon these types because of the subjectivity and possible ephemerality of current publications. The sequence of data recorded here for each type specimen is as follows: (1) name (original), (2) author(s), (3) publication in which the description appears, (4) nature of the specimen (ho- lotype, neotype), (5) catalogue number (Nat. Mus. Canada), (6) lo- cality (Sometimes abridged), (7) date the specimen was collected, (8) collector(s), (9) list of paratypes where appropriate. “Int. Trust for Zool. Nomen.
