William T. McElroy, Jr., Ph.D.

Dr. McElroy loved this school above everything else in his life. Each day he spent here was a day doing what he considered to be the best of all jobs.

He took great pride in knowing - usually by first name and hometown - all the students and how they were doing. Returning graduates headed for his office to visit and report on their experiences. And they got in return his complete attention and recognition.

Dr. McElroy died Thursday, November 3, 1988, at Schumpert Hospital after a lengthy illness. He was Associate Dean of Admissions, former Associate Dean of Student Affairs, and Professor of Physiology and Biophysics at LSU Medical Center School of Medicine in Shreveport.

Dr. McElroy was born in Shreveport and was a graduate of Byrd High School. He was the son of longtime Shreveport residents William T. and Effie Shaw McElroy. He served three and one-half years in the Medical Corps of the U.S. Navy, in various actions in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree from LSU in 1949, and was a member of Kappa Alpha fraternity. In 1954 he was awarded his Masters degree in Physiology under Dr. Maurice Visscher at the University of Minnesota Medical School and received his Doctorate in Physiology from Stanford University in 1958.

Dr. McElroy left his position as Associate Professor of Physiology, Hahnemann Medical College, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and returned to Shreveport in 1967 to accept a position as Associate Professor of Physiology and Biophysics and appointment as Assis- tant Dean of Student Affairs at the then fledgling LSU School of Medicine in Shreveport. He then became part of the original group which helped organize and turn the concept of the school into a reality. Dr. McElroy was also honored to have had the privilege of being among the school's founders. He considered that and his ongoing role with the school as his life's most meaningful accomplishments. Dr. McElroy chaired the school's Committee of Admissions and Student Affairs, beginning in 1968 and 1969, respectively, and became Professor of Physiology and Biophysics in 1970, and Associate Dean of Student Affairs in 1972. He held a number of distinguished appointments including Honors Fellow at Stanford and Fellowships from the American Physiological Society, which designated him Profes- sor Emeritus. His other memberships included the American Federation for Clinical Research, the American Medical Society and the Shreveport Medical Society. Dr. McEl- roy also published numerous research papers in basic science studies on heart and circulation, respiration and metabolism. His other interests included music, history and fine arts.

REGISTRATION

Summer is over - and so are the relaxing, pro- crastination filled days when Registration day at LSUMC arrives. Although students must wait in lines to fill out numerous forms, write checks which put them in debt, and take unwanted photographs, it is always refreshing to see old and new faces at registration. This day marks the beginning of a new year in which to excell, to set higher goals, and to experience the chal- lenge of new techniques and knowledge.

FAMILY DAY

Family Day .... the day when our fam- ily and friends get a peak at the life we claim to live and allow to consume all of our time. Okay, so most of us don't tell them that we occasionally escape the boundries of LSUMC to the real world. But then, how would they truly appreci- ate our dilemma. Students from all

classes participated in this Family Day. We let our guests know some of the projects of our student organizations; we showed them what and where we learned; and we let them see how we viewed our residents, our hospital staff, and ourselves.

CASINO PARTY

The sound of chips hitting the table, rolls of money passing hands, crowds of gamblers dressed to kill - these are the sights and sounds of the LSUMC Annual Casino Party. Blackjack tables were filled with participants trying to beat the house. Music by "Ra- zor" entertained those whose luck had run out. All in all, Lady Luck had a hand in the night's success, and success was the name of the game for those who challenged Her.

CHRISTMAS PARTY

As the Christmas holiday neared, time for relaxation and renewal was soon to come to the students and staff of LSUMC. One of the highlights of the season was the Annual Christmas Party. All that glit- tered and glowed filled the Civic Center as we enjoyed music by "Topcats". It was a night for anticipation of the upcoming advent season and a brief sigh of relief from the hectic days of school.

THE ICE STORM

Students are always looking for a reason to miss or skip school and in February of 1988, the students received their wish. One dreary night, rain began to drizzle down as the temperatures slowly dipped below freezing. The blanket of rain on the streets froze into a blanket of ice. Snow began to fall - the first in years, - and thoughts were turned from BIOCHEMIS- TRY, ANATOMY, AND PATHOLOGY to snowmen, fireplaces, and hot chocolate. Although classes were not canceled, few students were able to get to school be- cause of the hazardous driving condi- tions. The frozen weather brought a warm sigh of relief to the student body.

For a few years, Woodrow Street has always been the hot spot for medical student entertainment. There is one particular house which has earned the name "The Party House" and has kept the reputation. From year to year, various theme parties have been held at this nostalgic location. Whether a "toga party" or the "bring a stranger" party, each event proved to be a spectacle in itself. As those who are familiar with this place finish their studies and graduate to bigger and better things, there will always be a spot in their mem- ory of the "Party House".

CADAVER BALL

That long awaited day had come at last the end of our anatomy course. And now, it was time to celebrate. Time to vent our anger and frustrations at both ourselves and our profes- sors. Time to abuse those who had abused us for so long (of course, we may have abused them more than they actually de- served) And most importantly, time to relax and enjoy ourselves completely without guilt. We danced, drank, visited with friends, and watched skits until the party ended. And then, we walked down the street to dance some more.

34 Cadaver Bal

PATH ROAST

It is always a good experience for the students to work with a group of pro- fessors who are not only teachers, but also friends. The Pathology depart- ment proved to be both to the Sopho- more Class. After long hours of lecture and lab, after endless minutes at the microscope, and after pages of exam questions, the students and Pathology staff celebrate. Dancing to Kenny Bill Stinson and drinking beer aided in the revelry celebrating the end of pathol ogy. The entire Pathology department participated Dr. Grafton sang with the band as Dr. Gonzales filmed the event. It was a fine way to end a con- centrated course.

TIGER TROT

The LSUMC annual Tiger Trot has always been an awaited event in the spring. Much preparation and planning goes into the event and aid from the Red River Runners Association helps the event run smoothly. Participants come from all over to run in the 5K or IOK races and even young children participate in the one mile fun run. Tiger Trot shirts, trophies, gatorade, and bananas are all given to those who run or place. At the end of the race, all is over until next year.

CRAWFISH BOIL

Spring at LSUMC brings time for many events, one of which is a school tradition. The annual Crawfish Boil held at Champion lake involved students, residents, and staff. Entire families come out to enjoy the spicy, hot crawfish with all the fixins. Whether rain of shine, mouths will always water in anticipation of the spring "Crawdad Boil".

50 Baptist Student Union

Although medical school monopolizes the ma- jority of the student's time, there are some oppor- tunities offered for fulfillment in other areas. One of these organizations is the BSU. Throughout the year, BSU has a weekly lunch and participants are invited to listen to inspirational speakers. In April, the BSU traveled to Breckinridge for snow-skiing and winter revivement. Through the inspiration of the members and guest speakers associated with BSU, those who participated were enriched.

EXECUTIVE COUNCIL

The LSUMC-S Executive Council of the Student Body is composed of repre- sentatives from the Schools of Medicine, Graduate Studies, and Allied Health Professions. It is the primary governing body of the student union, student exercise room, and student lounge. It also sponsors the major social events (Casino Party, Christmas Party, and Crawfish Boil) and athletic events (Golf and tennis tournaments, intramural sports, and Tiger Trot) for the student body.

This year was one of extreme success for the Executive Council: "Family Day" an Executive Council sponsored event, attracted more than 600 friends and family members to our campus to see what we do on a day-to-day basis-, "Tiger Trot" finally generated a profit; There were more TGIF'S than ever before; The student union acquired a technologically advanced alarm system (after it was broken into!)-, students were assured of a more exclusive use of their exercise room and lounge via the installation of a "card access system" for those areas; And, of course, thousands of dollars were appropriated so students and their guests could eat, drink, and be merry at our major parties.

The success of Executive Council can, in large, part, be attributed to the undying efforts of its wonderful student activities secretary, Charlotte Sin- gleton. Charlotte spends long hours insuring the success of not only every special function, but also a day-to-day operation of our activities.

It is appropriate to pay special thanks to the outgoing Executive Council President, Ray Germany. Under Ray's leadership of the last three years, LSUMC-S students have witnessed the opening of the union, and the exercise room, and the enclosure of the lounge. Dr. Germany has also assured the success of countless services which students now enjoy. We wish him luck in his future endeavors. Bryan Sibley

PULSE

0

The work of a year (and sometimes a little longer) is poured into 184 pages of memories. Many hours are spent with the pictures of our classmates trying to get them in just the "right" order on just the "right" page, . . . and probably even more time trying to get into the yearbook room on a night when two or more people were free simultaneously. But through all impossi- bilities and any delay, Charlotte kept us going. It wasn't an easy job, and only a few are brave enough to take part, but we did have fun.

The MSIII Experience

Most all of us welcomed the advent of our clinical years with open arms, possibly because the human animal is basi- cally opportunistic, but probably because many of us hold a very distorted perception of the implications of leaving the sanctuary of the much reviled classroom environment. Obvi- ously, there was tremendous potential for "adjustment anxi- ety" when we, as a group, "hit" the hospital (or vice versa), but soon the seemingly pot-holed road to graduation smoothed and we learned to sit back and enjoy the ride. This journey would not be a lonely one; the comrades with whom we would share the "MSIII Experience" would help transform this year's events into lasting memories, if not fond ones.

There were so many "firsts". Remember the first "chew- ing out" by the attending? How about that first lumbar punc- ture you got just as your intern asked to take over, or what about your first schizophrenic patient with whom you were afraid to be in the same room? Personally, I will remember fondly being referred to as "bub" by the residents and as "doc" by the unknowing patients, and I think everyone will swell with pride when reminiscing their first solo delivery. The list of experiences goes on, one hurdle after another, gaining more knowledge and confidence and better judge- ment with each stride until, suddenly, one day, you can actually see the light at the end of the tunnel . . . soon, I will be a physician. SOPHOMORES

Remember the Freshman year, when everything was new and different? We made new friends and contin- ued the celebration of getting into medical school for an entire year. What a change the sophomore year was! We started out with O'Callaghan's "this baby-cakes is not, not, NOT ..." And who could forget Dr. Smith's incidence of TB in 1965 in London, England? From there we learned everything we always wanted to know about drugs, but were afraid to ask. Suddenly, we were in Medicine and Physical Diagnosis where we heard "Just learn the basic principles" and "Yeah, I've got V.D., doesn't everybody?" Despite the million pages of notes, we endured and it is with heavy hearts we sadly say good-bye to the eight hours of lecture a day and the hallowed lecture halls at LSUMC-S.

"They're out to get us!" or so we thought. But it was that attitude that brought together a roomful of strangers, tossed and turned them, stressed and distressed them. Somehow, in one year, that attitude took people from totally opposite ends of the spectrum, people who would have, under any other circumstances, not so much as offered a "hello" to one an- other, and forged bonds between them that go far beyond the realm of friendship, bonds to last a lifetime.

But then we learned that we, too, could "get them back!" Scantily clad women appeared in the middte of Histo Lab, beach scenes found their way in Dr. DeSha's slide show, and cer- tain evaluations scorched. Cadaver Ball told the truth of our feelings toward our oppressors - will any of us ever forget the imitation of Dr. Penny? Speaking of whom, how cold was the lake at the Crawfish Boil, Doc? Yes, we learned. They taught us how to treat them right. They taught us their courses - well. Academically, ours was one of the highest scoring freshman classes the school has seen. And they taught us one extremely valuable lesson: when you get the chance. PARTY!

SCHOOL OF GRADUATE STUDIES

For the unenlightened, graduate school is a mystery. It's hours of study to maintain the required 3.0. It's day and night in a lab, often alone, toiling over experiments. It's busting your tail for a degree that will pay less than working on the line at GM. Yes, it is insane, but for graduate students our insanity is also a gift that enables us to ask questions for which there are no answers yet. Our chosen profession may not make us rich, but the freedom it grants us to explore the limits of our intellectual capabilities makes us wealthy in the truest sense.

6 Years Banking/Lending Experience

To First National Bank and Mark Zacheis, taking care of doctors is a full-time business. While our physicians are tending to their patients' care, we're looking after their own financial well-being. Physicians require specialized professional and personal financial services and First National Bank provides them. Even when that means making calls on our health care customers at their offices, clinics or hospitals.

If you're not a customer of First National, give us a call. We'll make an appointment and come to you. Member fdic

Does your financial situation require major surgery?

As your experience and knowledge in the field of medicine grows, so will your need for a sound financial institution one that offers a complete fiscal examination.

Commercial National Bank has consistently served the local medical community and is familiar with your financial requirements.

For needs as varied as student assistance, financing your expanding practice, objective investment advice, short and long-term savings plans, personal trusts and Keoghs, look to the Medical Capital of the Ark-La-Tex.

And get a complete statement of your condition.

Sometimes, not too often, we reflect upon the good things, and our thoughts always center around those we love, and I think about those people who mean so much to me, and for so many years have made me so so very happy, and I count the times I have forgotten to say "Thank You" and just how much I love them.
