RANELLIDAE AND PERSONIDAE: A CLASSIFICATION OF RECENT SPECIES Betty Jean Piech Digitized by the Internet Archive in 2017 with funding from IMLS LG-70-15-0138-15 https://archive.org/details/ranellidaepersonOOunse -3- INTRODUCTION, NOTES AND ACKNOWLEDGMENTS In 1972, Dr. Rudolf Kilias authored an excellent monograph on the Family Cymatiidae. The following years have brought many changes; i.e., the family name is now Ranellidae, and distorsios are a separate family called Personidae. Therefore it was felt that a more up-to-date classification was needed as a guide for research and curatorial work. The classification herein presented is based on the examination of specimens in various museums and private collections, literature research, and exchange of information. No anatomical work was done. In the few cases where previously-used placement was changed, the entry is marked < *> indicating the decision was based on the author's unpublished research. New species were evaluated as they were published and added if they were considered to be valid. Those not accepted were placed in synonymy and also marked < *> . In a few cases where it was not possible to obtain specimens of newly-named species for examination and the available information did not seem adequate to make a definitive decision, the name was entered as a species and marked <**> indicating validity had not been verified. The format used is a listing of each subfamily, genus and subgenus, and species and subspecies, followed by synonyms in chronological order. Under each of these categories, the type is placed first followed in alphabetical order by the remainder of those that make up that specific group. All species are listed with authority and date of original description; the original genus, if different from that advocated by this catalog, follows in square brackets (e.g., [Genus]). With regard to the synonymy, that included here is not the complete history of a valid name, but rather a list of those synonyms considered to be most helpful in identification and placement of specimens. Also, no fossil species have been included except in cases of those that are type species of genera that include Recent species. The bibliography lists references for the original descriptions of all valid names and their listed synonyms, plus many other relevant books and articles. In some instances, particularly pertinent references are listed following a name in the body of the classification. These are indicated by < Author, Date>. One further explanation needs to be made. In 1990, A. Waren and P. Bouchet (see bibliography) authored a paper naming Pisanianurinae a new subfamily of Ranellidae, with the one genus Pisanianura Rovereto, 1899 having two species; namely, grimaldii (Dautzenberg, 1889) and breviaxe, (Kuroda & Habe, 1961). However, A. G. Beu now recognizes Pisanianurinae as a separate family (pers. comm., July 1993) and it is therefore not listed in this classification. The assistance I received from Dr. Albert Chadwick and Russell Jensen of the Delaware Museum of Natural History, Dr. William K. Emerson of the American Museum of Natural History (New York), and Dr. Rudiger Bieler of the Field Museum of Natural History (Chicago) -4- was invaluable and much appreciated. I am also very much indebted to Dr. Alan G. Beu of the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (Lower Hutt, New Zealand) for his willingness to share his extensive knowledge of these two families; to Walter Sage of the American Museum of Natural History, without whose help the bibliography might never have been completed; to Dr. E. F. Garcia of Lafayette, Louisiana, for bibliographic translations; to Mary Jane Arden and Jane McCallister of the Delaware Museum of Natural History for their expert help with production; and most especially to Dr. Paula M. Mikkelsen, also of the Delaware Museum of Natural History, whom I am most fortunate to have as my editor. And finally I would like to express my thanks to those many others who offered suggestions and advice and reviewed my manuscript.
