REPORT for 1913.

This Society was established in 1898, for the purpose of printing and indexing the ancient Parish Registers of the two Northern Counties down to the year 1812.

During the first sixteen years of the Society's existence twenty-nine Registers have been printed and indexed. It must be remembered that the Registers in both counties are frequently extremely voluminous, and, therefore, it has not been possible to increase that number. The amount of material printed extends to over 7,000 pages, a result which must be regarded as very satisfactory when the lowness of the annual subscription (10/6) is remembered.

.Upwards of 93 Registers have already been transcribed, and are ready for printing.

It is only by means of the Printing Press that the contents of our ancient Registers, which are of such value to all classes of the community, can be preserved and rendered generally available.

In some cases those interested in particular Registers have, in order to facilitate the work, generously contributed, either wholly or partly, to the expense of printing and issuing them. The Hon. Secretary will gladly supply estimates of cost to those who may be desirous of thus aiding the work of preserving our Registers.

Those who wish to help in this undertaking, by becoming members of the Society, should send their names to Herbert Maxwell Wood, b.a. , 1,, Manor Place, Sunderland.

Intending members must bear In mind that very few copies of the Registers first issued remain in stock, and those who require complete sets of the Registers of both counties should make early appHcation.

The number of members of the Society is necessarily limited to the number printed, viz., Orie Hundred and Fifty.

It must also be noted that the Society's Publications are supplied only to the vie7nhers. The Registers are not issued separately.

|j<F" Several Parishes have adopted the suggestions of the Hon. Secretary, viz., of printing their Registers in their Parish Magazine, and having extra copies printed uniform with the Parish Register Society's Publications. Although progress is necessarily slow, especially in Parishes with bulky Registers, a considerable amount of printing has already been done.

The following Parish Registers are in progress in this method of issue, and have been published for the years named against each.

PREFACE

The Parish of Castle Eden, which comprises no dependent townships, is bounded on the North by Easington Parish, on the West by the Chapelry of Wingate (formed of portions of the Parishes of Castle Eden and Kelloe), and on the South and East by Monk Hesleden. It comprises an area of 1,935 acres.

The population given by the census returns is as follows :

Where the entry is illegible, or where there is no entry at all, the Editor has indicated it by \hlank\^ and where any doubt as to the name existed, by a query.

The letters Lie. in the Marriage Registers indicate that the Marriage was solemnized by License : where this does not occur it was in all cases performed after the Publication of Banns.

It is well to remind readers that previous to 1752 the year began on the 25th of March, instead of, as now, on the ist of January.
