List of Species by Counties and Localities. 205 Numbered Localities in each County as shown on Map. 205 Species taken at each locality in the Counties. . 210 Introduction The Asilidae is a family of two-winged flies (Diptera) that vary in size from 5 to 50 mm. in length. They are called "robber flie6n as the adults are predacious on other insects. They sit on the ground, on rocks, on tips of twigs or on the sides of trees waiting for other insects to fly by. They usually attack in the air, grasp their prey with their powerful legs, pierce them with their sharp mouth parts and inject a fluid which usually renders them motionless in a few minutes. Then then fly to a convenient location where they suck out the contents of their prey. A few insects such as grasshoppers are attacked while moving on the ground. Frequently the prey is larger than the fly and after a struggle at times it gets away. The larvae are reported to be predacious on white grubs in the ground and beetle larvae living in and under. the bark of trees. Che authority reported that the mouth parts of some Asilid larvae were not strong enough to be predacious. The Asilidae are world wide in distribution and in North America range from the subartic regions (Alaska and Canada) to the tropical regions (Panama). About half of the species live in the mountains, forest 8, river valleys and along the sea shore, while the other half live in the deserts and open plains." Some species found in the highest mountains in California are found nearly at sea level in Alaska. There are about 5,000 species in the World, about 1,000 of which occur in America, north of Mexico. California has one of the richest faunas in the world with over 400 species, about half of which live in the desert areas. In arid areas the Asilidae can only survive in uncultivated and undisturbed areas. A good example is Los Angeles and Orange Counties, east and south of the mountains* D. ff« Coquillett lived here from 1882-1595 and collected and described many flies, sixteen of which were robber flies. Only one of his species of robber flies can be found here now and one of his species has never been found. His other species have been found in Riverside, San Bernardino and San Diego Counties where cultivation of the soil, destruction of the native vegetation and urban growth has not been so extensive. The desert areas as defined and included here are: all of Imperial County; eastern San Diego County including Mt. Palomar and the Laguna I.'ts.j eastern Riverside County including the eastern and northern slopes of the San Jacinto Mts.; . northern San Bernardino County including the northern slopes of the San Bernardino and San Gabriel Mts. and Cajon Pass; Los Angeles County north of and including the north slopes of the San Gabriel Uts.; Xern County south and east of Lake Isabella; and Inyo and Mono Counties including the eastern slopes of the Sierra Nevada Mts. The Aoilidae are divided into subfamilies which have been changed is this century and are subject to change in the futue* Williston (1908) recognized the following four subfamilies: Asilinae, Laphrinae, Dasypogoninae and Leptogastrinae and were in general use for about 40 years. G. K. Hardy (19^8) after many years work with the Australian Asilidae reduced the families to two: the Dasypogoninae (with 10 tribes) and the Asilinae (with 5 tribes including the Leptogastrini) . Carraera (i960) adopted this plan for the South American Asilidae and added one tribe to the Dasypogoninae. Hull (1962) in his great work on the 7/orld genera used the four subfamilies of Williston (1908) and added a fifth, the Megapodinae. Martin (I968) elevated the Leptogastrinae to family rank and gave them the common name "Grass Flies" • Papavero (1975) after his study of the World genera divided the Asilidae into eight subfamilies but left out the Leptogastrinae. His subfamilies are used here plus the Leptogastrinae as it' 8 elevation to family rank has not been accepted by several authorities. The subf smiles are listed below and all but the Ctnmatiinae are found in California. Apocleinae (Lehr I969), Asilinae (Lsach 1819/1 Dasypogoninae(fuacquart (1858), Laphriina^O'ac quart 1858), Laphystiinae (G. H. Hardy (19^8), Leptogastrinae (Schiner 1862), Cmmatiinae (G • H. Hardy 1927), Stenopogoninae (Hull 1962), and Trigonomimae (Enderlein 1914).
