YEARS from today, when you recall your college life, may the 1953 Serpentine represent West Chester State Teach- ers College — all it means and everything it stands for. As the seasons emerge and fade, student life wends its way through campus activities that reflect the changing pano- rama of nature. The brisk autumn weather with multi- colored leaves falling underfoot introduces freshmen and football to the campus. Student government, formal dances, and sports seem to be in the spotlight. Before anyone is aware of it, the weather has turned cold, the trees are bare, and Christmas is coming with softly falling snow and carols In the air. Attention is turned to music, club activities, and vacation. Then one day, unexpectedly, a new spirit is evident on campus. Everyone walks with a spring in his step. Coats are worn unbuttoned, and head scarves are absent from view. Before long, graceful blos- soming trees are shielding sturdy little benches; we need not mention where Interests lie. More serious thoughts center around final exams and, for the seniors, graduation. Par- ticular emphasis has been laid upon the seniors who have glimpsed college life for the last time — In an environment of flaming color, in a world of coldness and white. In sur- roundings of blossoms and green.

The Beginninq

The first day back, and greeted by lines — lines to register, lines for keys, lines for books. Familiar scenes and friendly faces welcomed upper- classmen, who walked confidently across campus with an air of "knowing." The freshmen arrived and appeared uncertain. The beginning days were busy — old friends to find, coffee in the "Pig," trips uptown, tennis to play, lobby sings, free ten-thirties.

In the hearts of the students, it was still sum- mer; vacation memories remained to make them gay. Only the freshmen, completely lost in their strange surroundings, had many doubts about the new semester. Then all too soon leisure time was ended; classes started at eight o'clock. With note- books under their arms, students made their way across the Quad and into Anderson hHall. Back to textbooks, notes and exams. Perhaps they didn't look too closely; perhaps they didn't see that the leaves on the maples were turning red.

Dr. Charles S. Swope has served as president of the college for eighteen years. During this time he has come to be re- spected by students and faculty alike for his character and leadership. A graduate of West Chester Normal School in 1921, President Swope continued his education, receiving degress from Dickinson and the University of Pennsylvania, hie served as supervisor of grade work and as head of the History Department at the Pennington School for Boys. In addition to his work in education, he is a noted lecturer. At West Chester he has been particularly interested in improving the physical plant and in maintaining the enrollment.

Regisfratlon lines, tests, and freshman regulations greeted the freshman class upon its arrival at West Chester. To climax the "frosh regs," both the men and the women participated in special activities at the first football game of the season. Preceding the game, fhe new West Chester fans formed a double line on the field through which the Rams passed as they met their opponents, Pennsylvania Military College. During the half-time the "frosh" formed a snake line and thrilled the upperclassmen with the singing of their class song and the Alma Mater.

For the women students the main event of the year was the annual Big-Little Sister Picnic sponsored by the Women's Dormitory Council. Men students initiated a new program which highlighted the freshman calendar, the Freshman Smoker."

Early in the fall semester the class election was held; the following officers were elected: Clem Smith, president; Edward Carson, vice-presiden+; Marie Whitworth, treasurer; and Phyllis Cravitz, secretary.

FDDTBALL

With the advent of autumn and the new school year, West Chester sports fans began to think of football, soccer, and cross-country, of hot dogs, hot chocolate, cold October nights, and winning teams. The 1952 edition of West Chester football started, however, with the fans enjoying shirtsleeve weather and drinking cold lemonade; they watched a winning team.

Starting with an easy, although sluggish, win over P.M.C., the Ram gridders moved into high gear as they defeated Delaware University in the season's big game. Following this important victory, the Rams registered impres- sive victories over four teachers' college teams and then finished the season by completely outclassing a good Bloomsburg eleven.

Many outstanding performances contributed to the 7 win, 0 loss record. Among these were the fine running and blocking of halfback Earl Hersh. Charlie Weber, chosen as defensive guard on the Little All-American first team, was constantly in the opponent's backfield. For his outstanding teamplay, Weber was also named to the All-Pennsylvania football team as offensive guard.

The coaching staff, led by Glenn Killinger, did a fine job in giving West Chester its first undefeated football team since 1947 and placing it in the select group of fifteen undefeated, untied teams in the country.

Serious accidents were avoided and, in spite of a depleted schedule, player spirit was high.

THE RAMS opened their 19b/; season with an easy 21-6 victory over P.M.C., with the varsity squad playing only slightly more than one-half of the game. Halfbacks Earl Hersh and Fred Prender each accounted for one touch- down, and defensive linebacker Tony Karpaitis fell on a fumble in the end zone for the Rams' third tally.

After a two-weeks' rest, the Rams traveled to Wil- mington to meet Delaware University, the team West Chester had never defeated on the gridiron. After receiv- ing the kickoff, the Rams fumbled on the first play from scrimmage. In two plays Delaware scored and took a 7-0 lead. Late in the second quarter, Hersh, played his greatest game, smashed into the end zone for the Rams' first score. During the- second half Hersh scored twice and led the offensive unit as they downed Delaware 24-20. Ray Spafford called a fine game as quarterback.

In the next four games. West Chester met and defeated Lock Haven 74-7, East Stroudsburg 41-0, Kutztown 50-0, and Millersville 55-6. The Rams completely outclassed their

teacher-opponents as Spafford successfully filled the air with passes, and the starting backfield of Hersh, Prender, and Alex Neiman consistently ground out yardage. A new half- back speedster, Pat Gazzillo, was introduced in the Lock Haven game. Kutztown, putting up the hardest battle and holding the Rams to a 14-0 half-time lead, was completely outclassed in the final quarter as safety man Jim Hagan, playing only in defense, returned three punts for touch- downs.

In the final game the Rams met Bloomsburg coached by Jack Yohe, former West Chester backfield coach. The expected tight struggle, however, failed to materialize as the Rams took an early lead and continually dominated play to win 26-6.

Earl Hersh, who finished second in scoring in Pennsyl- vania and first in the number of touchdowns, participated in the annual Blue-Grey game on December 27 in Alabama. Bob Mosteller also received honors as the Pennsylvania leader in points scored after touchdowns.

Coach "Muddy" Waters' 1952 soccer team, led by co-captains Clarence Grumbine and Charles Potter, com- pleted a successful but injury-riddled season.

The Rams opened their all-out offensive to gain national honors when they defeated the Alumni 12-0. Every member of the team saw action.

When West Chester played the United States Military Academy at home, approximately twenty-five hundred people turned out to see possibly the biggest game in the nation. After trailing 1-0 until the last minute of the first half, the Rams finally exploded when Tony Puglisi dented the West Point goal to tie the score. Bob hieisler became the hero of the day when he scored in the third period to give West Chester a 2-1 lead which was never relinquished. The Rams had now run their victory skein to twenty games.

"Dutch" Grumbine and hHoward Troxeli were sidelined with injuries suffered in the Army game when the Rams played the University of Pennsylvania. After losing the services of Ralph Blessing and Charlie Potter, who suffered concussions in this game, the Rams went down to a 3-0 defeat.

On October 27, with five men missing from the start- ing line-up the Rams traveled to the University of Baltimore

where they were defeated 3-0.

The injured players were gradually recovering when East Stroudsburg played at West Chester. The game ended in a l-l tie. Bill Freudenberger scored the tying goal.

The bad luck seemed to be over for the Rams when they downed the University of Delaware 5-1. Mike Roman, Tony Puglisi, "Dutch" Grumbine, Bob Bedi, and "Chico" Rey scored the goals.

LaSalle College came to West Chester with an unbeaten record. The Rams promptly upset them with an impressive 5-0 victory. Co-captain "Dutch" Grumbine turned in the "hat trick" by denting the LaSalle goal three times. Bob Helsler and Mike Roman received credit for the other two goals.

Next, the soccer team traveled to Elizabethtown and promplty defeated them 5-2. Howard Troxeli scored twice, while Mike Roman, Bob hieisler, and "Dutch" Grumbine each counted once.

Seton hHall was the last team on the schedule. West Chester won an easy 3-0 victory and finished with a record of six victories, two losses, and one tie.

Eight men have played their last game for coach Earl Waters and the Rams.

Clarence Grumbine and Francis Williams came from Fredericksburg and Oxford hiigh Schools respectively. Both boys played varsity soccer in high school. While at West Chester "Dutch" distinguished himself as an outstanding center forward and Franny held the left inside position.

These men played three years as members of the varsity team. "Dutch" v/as named co-captain in his senior year along with Charles Potter.

Charles Potter and William Freudenberger came from Girard College where they excelled as soccer players. While at West Chester these men played right and left halfback. Both were members of Coach Waters' squad for three years.

Ablngton and McCaskey High Schools are represented by capable players Alan Quay and "Hughie" Miller. Al played varsity fullback for two years while "hlughie" dis- tinguished himself as Coach Waters' all-round man.

Ralph Blessing from Lower Merion and Tom Seraydarian from West Philadelphia FHigh School played varsity goalie at West Chester for two years. Ralph, a boy who never played soccer in high school, became one of the Ram's best goalies. Service with the Air Corps interrupted but did not affect Seraydarian's playing ability.

Spectators and team alike will miss these men next year.

West Chester State Teachers College proudly placed three names on the All-American lists dur- ing the 1952 sports season. Tony Puglisi, playing in the left outside position on the soccer team, was named to the All-American soccer first team. Earl hiersh and Charlie Weber, co-captains of the 1952 West Chester football team, were placed on the Little All-American football squads.

For the second consecutive year Tony Puglisi, a junior, was picked as a member of the All- American soccer first team. Tony was particularly outstanding in the close games, hlis most important point was the one which tied the score in the Army game and set the stage for the upset victory for West Chester.

Charlie Weber, a senior, was placed on the Little All-American first team. Playing at both offensive and defensive tackle, Charlie was the type of player who was great under a one or two platoon system. Charlie, a natural athlete who excelled in wrestling and baseball as well as foot- ball, was also treasurer of the senior class.

Earl hiersh, also a senior, was given honorable mention on the All-American team at halfback. Earl was not only second in the state for yardage gained on the ground, but also was adept at scoring passes, hie was honored by being selected to repre- sent the Blue team in the annual Blue-Grey game. Earl caught a touchdown pass for the only score for the Blue team in that game. Earl, also proficient in baseball, signed a contract with the Boston Braves after the football season, hie was also placed on their draft list by the Philadelphia Eagles' pro- fessional football team should he decide to continue in football.

The Ram runners, coached by Arthur hHaw- thorne, had what they considered a successful sea- son. The teann's record totaled three wins and four losses. Only three veterans returned this year. They were Jack Echternach arid Francis Wright, co-captains, and hlyman Kaplan.

There was a large turn-out of new men. Upper- classmen representing the Ram hiarriers' varsity included Bob Lewis, Rocco DiSalvi, Bob Meyers, George Loper, Joe Glick, and Lincoln Lang. Fresh- men running on the varsity were Al Ramos and Roy Chronistic.

The Rams lost their two opening meets to strong teams from LaSalle and Penn. They defeated Cheyney State Teachers College at home; then they traveled to hloward University where the runners lost by a narrow margin.

The Harriers then met a strong Temple team, but broke up a perfect score with the brilliant run- ning of Jack Echternach, who finished fifth.

The West Chester team finished strong with impressive victories over Washington and Albright Colleges.

Outstanding runner for the season was Jack Echternach, who led the team in almost every meet.

Every fall the Women's Recreation Association begins its busy year-round program. All girls who are sports enthusiasts are urged to choose their favorite sports. There is a sport for every girl whether she be skilled or unskilled; curriculum is no barrier. To promote good sportsmanship, leadership, and skills is the aim of this outstanding organiza- tion. These qualities can be established through the intra- mural sports program, the intercollegiate basketball, soft- ball, and hockey games which bring other college teams to

West Chester, the square dances, and the sports and play days offered by W.R.A.

Under the able leadership of the faculty advisers, the officers, and the council, which is composed of the sports managers, the Women's Recreation Association attempts to reach the goal of a sound and diversified program of athletics which will serve the needs and interests of all the participants.

VOLLEY BALL

"Go Skids Row,' go! was the cheer heard as the senior health education team dominated the volleyball league to take the championship for the fourth consecutive year. The season opened with seven teams scheduled in the single elimination tournament. To reach the finals, "Skids Row" defeated the other senior health education team, the "Foghorns," who had been victorious in its opening contest. In its final game, "Skids Row" overpowered the "Tappers," a freshman health education team. This victory enabled them to win the championship and to participate in the volleyball "Play Night" at Temple University on December 4.

HOCKEY

Displaying a driving line and all-round smooth play plus accurate stickwork, the hockey team finished the season with a tie and two losses to three powerful clubs.

The team opened its season with Urslnus College and was downed 7-2. Temple was the next game in line, and, regardless of the fact that the girls showed good teamwork, the fast moving Temple forward line broke through five times to score. West Chester was unable to tally in this contest.

The exciting game with Drexel ended in a 2-2 stale- mate. Although West Chester held a 1-0 lead at the begin- ning of the game, Drexel came back in the final half to

score two goals. Betty Cowperthwait then drove for a goal just before the final gun to tie the game.

Upon entering All-College competition at Ursinus Col- lege, the West Chester record improved. The team tied Beaver I -I, and Swarthmore 2-2, and defeated All-Catholic 1-0.

Under the adequate coaching of Miss Yanisch and Miss Landis, the team, composed mainly of freshmen and sopho- mores, has been one of the finest college teams produced. With a little more playing experience. Miss Yanisch expects to have a more polished-looking club next season.

"Sticks! Advancing!" These were the familiar cries on the girls' athletic fields, from golden September to nippy November. The hockey enthusiasts could be found working diligently for stickwork and team strategy every afternoori after classes. W.R.A. hockey manager, Carol Holt, did a fine job. Six health education teams composed one league and five academic teams, the other. A Round Robin Tour- nament offered an optimum of opportunity for all interested in participating.

This season saw senior teams: victorious in both leagues. The champions of the health education league were the "Senior Fillies," who held this title three out of four years. The "Squares," the senior victors of the academic league, also held an impressive record with two years' winnings to their credit. Keen competition, team play, and fun were just a few of the attributes of this invigorating sport.

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY OF S.G.A.

The Cabinet of the Student Government Association consists of the presidents of the classes and of leading campus organizations. It proposes legislation dealing with changes in college regulations, discusses these changes, and gives suggestions to the Legislative Assembly.

The Legislative Assembly Is composed of ten elected members representing all four classes and a delegate from each of the day and dormitory councils. This group passes, amends, or rejects legislation approved by the Cabinet.

These organizations, with faculty and administration, try to improve school spirit, to create better student-faculty relationships, and to voice the views of the students.

STUDENT ACTIVITIES ASSOCIATION

The Student Activities Association is under the guid- ance of Dr. Robert F. Anderson. It is organized to provide students with the right to establish a fund suitable for the maintenance of many extra-curricular activities and athletic organizations.

The most popular and celebrated activities financed by the Student Activities Association are the All-Star Programs. Presented this year were: a vocal quartet, Edgar Ansel Mowerer, Jean Leon Destine and his company, the Scherman Little Orchestra Society, Jennie Tourel, and a hiarp Quintet.

ADVISORY BOARD

One of the most active organizations on campus this year was the Advisory Board, whose accomplishments in- cluded the Big-Little Sister picnic, the Senior Tea, the Mid- Winter formal, the Council picnic, and the annual decoration of the Christmas tree in the lobby of Main Dormitory.

This group's aim, that of providing a co-ordinating link between the Women's Day and Dormitory Councils, has been realized through the efforts of the following capable leaders: Margaret Gordon, president, Barbara Leeds, vice- president, Helen Dennis, secretary, and Nancy Snyder, treasurer.

Women's Day Student Cnuncil

The Women's Day Student Council is the elected body that represents the wonnen commuters of the college. During the past year, the constitution has been revised to suit the changing needs of the group. This council is responsible for the enactment of regulations that help keep the day student rooms attractive and neat. It enforces these laws through the Day Student Court, a part of the council. The council also plans and sponsors the holiday parti^-s for its members at various times during the year.

The Women's Dormitory Council is a similar organiza- tion for those students who reside at the college. The chief

aim of the Dormitory Council is to foster cooperation between the students and the administration. This organiza- tion, through the efforts of its councilors, keeps the women students informed of college policies and council regulations and formulates plans for the improvement of dormitory life. These two bodies work together to unite the women of the college. They jointly sponsor the Big-Little Sister Picnic, the Senior Tea, the Pot Luck Supper, and the Mid- Winter Formal. Through these organizations the women of the campus are represented in the college government.

An active organization on campus this year has been the Men's Dormitory Council. It has sponsored various activities including the "Freshman Men s Smoker" and an all- college dance. Other projects are the soliciting for the Campus Charities Campaign and the assisting in securing volunteers for the Bloodmobile program.

The purpose of the council is to set up social standards for men living on the campus of West Chester. New this year is the guidance system whereby upperclassmen help freshmen men who come with problems. With primarily the

same purpose and the same systematic procedure in opera- tion is the Men's Day Student Council.

Projects sponsored by the Men's Day Council over the past year were a hHallowe'en party for the day students, the purchase of chess and checker sets for use in the recreation room, and the organizing and sponsoring of chess, checkers, and ping-pong tournaments. In addition, the council has for- mulated a set of rules and regulations which all day students must observe in order to make their program a worthwhile one.

LITTLE THEATER

The student body at West Chester has no reason to doubt that the mottoes of the Little Theater Players are "The play's the thing" and "The show must go on."

Members of this group work with Miss Fern Barrer to present outstanding performances. Each year for Parents' Weekend they prepare a special play which is their largest production for the fall semester. The play presented this year was Sreen Grow the Lilacs. Members of the senior class had the leading roles.

Many productions are given throughout the college year. They are chosen both for the entertainment they afford and for their cultural value. The various stage com- mittees as well as the performers contribute toward the success of these plays.

Miss Fern Barrer, ably assisted by Miss Dorothy Ramsey, guides the Players in presenting an excellent production on every occasion.

One of the outstanding achievements of the Soph- omore Class was the semi-formal dance that was held on October 25 in Recreation hiall. "Autumn Leaves," the theme of the dance, was indeed appropriate for that time of year. Those who attended the affair enjoyed the colorful fall dec- orations as they danced 'to the music of the Criterions.

Ronald Hockenbury, Polly Williams, and Richard Groff were leading chairmen of this gala event. They were ably

assisted by fellow classmates who cooperated in making the affair a success.

The Sophomore Class can certainly be proud of its officers, who are John Collins, president; Ned Troutman, vice-president; Phoebe Ruth, secretary; and Dorothy Cham- bers, treasurer. With the able guidance of these leaders, the sophomore class presented one of the campus successes of the year.

In its junior year, the Class of 1954 became a true part of campus life. With R. Daniel DiSalvi as president, the class began the new semester with plans for its Junior Prom, the introduction of candidates for Prom Queen, and the election of a Queen. The ring committee was chosen and orders were taken for class rings. The Junior Class has an important part in the sponsorship of the Serpentine. Early in the year, the

editor and business manager for the 1954 Serpenfine were elected. The members of the Junior Class were also active participants in musical programs, sports, dramatics, and stu- dent government. The faculty advisers for this class are Mrs. hielen Ivins, a member of the Social Studies Department, and Mr. Emil Messikomer, Director of Personnel.

The Shakespeare Folios, the William Pyle Philips Legacy

During the past years West Chester has been the recipient of many gifts. One of the most recent bestowed upon the college was the collection of Shakespeare Folios, presented by William P. Philips in honor of the late Dr. Francis H. Green, who dedicated many years of his life* to service on this campus. These four original folios are to be hereafter known as the Francis Harvey Green Shakespeare Folios and will be kept in a special vault in the library bearing the educator's name. On special occasions these volumes will be exhibited for the general public.

Another priceless treasure bequeathed to the college was a rare collector's item consisting of a nine volume work entitled Biographies of the Signers to the Declaration of Independence by John Sanderson. The historic value is appreciated by many authorities of collectors' items. Students, faculty, and alumni feel most honored for the memorable tokens that have been given the college.

The 1952-53 West Chester basketball team fought hard to stay above the .500 mark. With two games remaining on the schedule, the record stood at 8 wins and 9 losses.

During the season the Rams met Lebanon Valley, St. Joseph's, Loyola- — the defending champions of the Mason- Dixon conference, and La Salle, one of the top ten teams in the country.

The team played best against its toughest opponents and made a better record on the home court than else- where.

Bill Munch, former Lansdowne hiigh School star and co-captain of the Rams, was a consistent point-maker. Bill, a senior whose specialty was one-hand shots from the outside, ranked among the top scorers in the state.

Ralph Blessing, co-captain and the other senior mem- ber of the team, was the steadying influence and out- standing defensive member of the Ram five. Ralph was particularly adept at receiving foul shots and was con- sistently at his best when the game became close.

With the opening of the season against Loyola College It was apparent Innmedlately that the Rams would miss Art Nazlgan, the number two scorer In the state during the l952-'53 season. In the first game, however, the team made up in spirit what it lacked in height and defeated Loyola by a score of 68-66. In the second game the Rams came from behind to win over Elizabethtown 65-49.

After splitting their next two games, the Rams traveled to Philadelphia to meet La Salle College. Junie Rich's 28 points were not enough to save the team from defeat as the N.I.T. champions gained a victory. In the next game the Rams lost a 91-80 decision to unbeaten Lebanon Valley College.

The West Chester five won two of its next three games and was above the .500 mark as the second part of the sea- son's campaign began. Drexel was the foe in the first game of a double-header at Convention Hall. The road jinx held as the Rams lost by a score of 78-60. The next opponent was Delaware, traditional rival. Coach Messlkomer started only two of his first-string regulars and the Blue hiens took an early lead. With the first team clicking in the second half the Rams pulled to within 3 points, but the Hens froze the ball to give West Chester its first loss on the home court, 89-85.

In their next home game the Rams dropped a 99-96 thriller to Bloomsburg, State Teachers College champion.

At their meeting with St. Joseph's the Rams played their best ball of the campaign and managed to stay within two points of their opponents until the last quarter. Although Bill Munch, with 30 points, topped both teams In scoring, reserve strength prevailed as the Rams met an 88-72 defeat.

The Ram tankmen, coached by Mr. Edward Twardowski, and captained by Bob Wick, have won two meets and lost three with a remainder of three contests on the schedule to be decided. The Rams outmatched hloward University and Pennsylvania Military College and have been defeated by strong teams from Lafayette, La Salle, and Delaware.

Swimming for their last season were Captain Bob Wick, Chris Ames, and Dick Wolf. Chris Ames, who took second place in diving in the Middle Atlantic Championships for the past three years, and Ed Conrad, outstanding individual medley swimmer, spearheaded their team throughout the season.

Miss Kay Margerum, varsity basketball coach, was literally "snowed under" this season when sixty-nine girls, all good players, reported for try-outs. After two weeks of extensive screening the number was reduced to twenty- nine who made up the varsity and junior varsity squads.

Four seniors — Shirley Frederick, Gloria Krug, Bev Miller, and Janet Nell, five juniors, eight sophomores, and twelve freshmen were chosen.

The highlights of the season were the two home games with Ursinus and Swarthmore. Enthusiasm ran high and, as in previous years. West Chester did well against its strong opponents. The team also was successful at Immaculata.

Karlene Attick, as manager, assisted Miss Margerum in scheduling and in solving transportation problems.

INTRAMURAL

Swish! That was a common sound every afternoon from five to six P.M. in the Old Gym. With Shirley Kile as the manager, the W.R.A. basketball season began shortly after Thanksgiving and closed at the end of February. One hundred and fifty girls composed eight Health Edu- cation and eight Academic teams with substitutes. A Round Robin tournament allowed everyone maximum participation. Attendance at these games showed that basketball still leads in the popularity poll of sports at West Chester.

Dr. Willard Trezise led the wrestling team through an injury-ridden but successful season. The matmen, who were the State Teachers College Champions last year, had their share of bad luck.

Co-captains William Zimmerman and Robert McNeils worked with State Champions Charles Cawthorn and Charles Weber to form the backbone of the team. Lee Bohner, John

Bycoskie, Clyde Witman, Dick Walters, and Tony Soscia supplied the remaining punch to make the team effective.

Towson State Teachers College, Lincoln University, Uni- versity of Pennsylvania, Wilkes College, and East Strouds- burg State Teachers College were easy prey for the Ram matmen. Lock hiaven State Teachers College and Millersville State landed the grapplers their only set-backs.

The Gym Team, coached by Alvin Davis, competed against three of the finest teams in the East. Although all three meets were lost, the team, composed of men who had little experience, showed much improvement by the end of the season. This year's gymnasts lost to Army, Navy, and Temple University.

Captain Robert Kinderman, who competed in the rope climb, was the outstanding member of the team. His best time for the twenty-foot climb was 4.2 seconds. Performing on the norizontal bar was Bob Brightbill, while Ed Petei"s excelled on the mats and the parallel bars.

To those men who have earned a varsity letter in a recognized sport goes the honor of membership in the Var- sity Club. This organization, which stands for the promotion of good fellowship among athletes of the college and stimu- lates interest in the college athletic program, is as traditional to campus life as is the Rams' sports schedule that extends from fall to spring.

Among the projects undertaken by the club are the publications of the Ram's Horn, official football program, the Wayne Hall Follies, and Varsity Club dances. The fol- lowing officers provided leadership for the club this year: Charles Potter, president; Robert Brightbill, vice-president; Clarence Grumbine, secretary; and William Freudenberger, treasurer.

The white jacketed figures seen about the campus were the sophomore, junior, and senior members of the Valkyrie Club, the women's hiealth and Physical Education profes- sional organization. Who can forget the Valkyrie Regs and the sounds of 'Hail Valkyrie!" that every sophomore woman health ed echoed across the Quad?

The Valkyries produce a show every year in the spring. This year's production, marking the twenty-fifth anniversary of the club, was a review of the past.

FRIARS CLUB

The Friars Club, organized to create fellowship among its members, performs numerous services on campus. Among these contributions are the presentation of the George Blackburn trophy to the Championship Intramural Basketball Team, the publication of "The Torch" which all present and former members receive monthly, and the sponsorship of two social dances during the year.

Members of the group are chosen on the basis of out- standmg leadership, character, scholarship, and service to the college.

Music Clubs at the Carol Service

COLLEGE CHOIR

College Choir, 'under the direction of Mr. Arthur E. Jones, is composed of one hundred and four voices selected from the music curriculum. Annual activities of the Choir include singing at the Christmas Carol Service, Baccalau- reate, and other college and off-campus programs. This year they were invited to perform for the Pennsylvania Music Educators Association.

JUNIOR CHORUS

The Junior Chorus includes all the women of the music curriculum who are not members of the College Choir. Directed by Mr. Arthur E. Jones, the group participated in the annual Christmas Carol Service and presented a concert in the spring semester.

The Girls' Glee Club, under the direction of Dr. Frank Cheesman, is a musical organization for wonnen students of all curricula. A concert of religious music at the Pottstown Baptist Church, participation in the Christmas Carol Service at the college, and the presentation of the annual Spring Concert were included in this year's activities.

MEN'S GLEE CLUB

The musical organization on campus which offered enjoy- ment for men of all curricula was the Men's Glee Club. Under the able leadership of Mr. Lawrence Ginter, this group participated in many campus affairs throughout the year, including the annual Christmas Carol Service held in Philips Memorial Auditorium.

With i+s colorful theme of "Finian's Rainbow," the gala Mid-Winter Formal, held on March 7, 1953, was an outstand- ing social success. True to its motif, the dance transformed Recreation Hall into a fanciful land of Erin. Leprechauns, Irish harps, and countless other imaginative decorations com- bined to make the gaily decorated hall a spectacular domain of eye-catching color.

Marjorie Gordon, who led preparations for the dance, and her assistants, Catherine Steffa and Joan Winters, con- tributed toward making the event an outstanding success.

Four games out of the first five were won by overpower- ing scores during West Chester's 1952 baseball season. The fifth game with Moravian College ended In a 3-3 deadlock. Then in a doubleheader at La Salle, the Rams lost both games by the slim margin of one run. Rebounding from this double defeat, the team won two of the remaining three games.

West Chester opened its 1952 season on April 19 with an easy 10-4 victory over Washington Col- lege. This game previewed the entire season as the Rams' hitting power contributed to a successful season of six wins, three losses, and one tie. Rain whi.ch caused four cancellations, and a double loss to La Salle College were the only two dampening aspects of an otherwise successful season for Coach Glenn Killinger.

The tennis courts resounded on every nice day to cries of "Volley, " "Serve," and "Point" when the W.R.A. Tennis Club took over.

Manager Ann Feeney used the more advanced players to instruct beginners and intermediates in the sport for a total of four hours weekly, both in the fall and in the spring. Never let it be said that West Chester women didn't play

In early spring, the courts of the Women's Athletic Field were rolled and relined. Miss Leach, sponsor of the group, looked forward to prospective matches with other colleges, as has been the custom in previous years. Some potential stars were Janet Ughes, Jo Kramer, Peggy Brooker, Sally Ginther, and Ann Feeney.

The West Chester tennis team, coached by Mr. Edward Twardowski, opened the 1952 season with an innpressive victory over Moravian College. A thrilling second meet against St. Joseph was not quite so easy since the victor was not decided until the final doubles match. Captain Gary Zweig with Al Donofrio overpowered their opponents for two straight victories.

The only meet the Twardowski men lost was against Swarthmore. Although defeated 7-2, the individual matches were hard fought. The powerful West Chester team easily downed the four remaining opponents on the schedule.

Outstanding men on the squad were Vic Crespy and Al Quay, who were undefeated for the entire season. Cap- tain Zweig lost only one match. Manager for the team was Bert Lynch.

Under the capable leadership of Mr. John Clokey and Dr. Russell S+urzebecker, the track team made an impressive record of five victories and two defeats for the 1952 season.

In their first victory, over Lincoln University, the Rams captured eight first places with victories in all except one running event. Captain Bob Dickerson won two running events.

Victory came easily to the Rams at their meeting with East Stroudsburg. The team won ten events with Mike Facciolli taking two firsts.

After two wins, West Chester met defeat at the hands of St. Joseph's College. Bob Dickerson, Mike Facciolli, and Silas White captured six victories for the Rams. This, how- ever, was not enough to subdue a strong and determined opponent.

Triumphing in eleven of the fourteen events, West Chester achieved a decisive victory over Cheyney. Mike Facciolli and Jack Echternach were the only double winners. Bob Lewis, Don Dickerson, Kenneth Ober, Joe Splecker, Ted Beck, and Sid Mollard each claimed a single win.

In the Rams' victory over Bloomsburg, new names were added to the winners' column. These were Al Angelo, Rick Miller, John Alliger, Bill Condit, and Bob Kinderman.

Bob Dickerson, Silas White, and Mike Facciolli were double winners as Montclair State Teachers College was forced to bow to the West Chester team.

In the last regular meet of the season. West Chester was out-pointed by La Salle. West Chester broke some rec- ords but could not gain enough points to win. Mike Facciolli tied the La Salle field record and set a new West Chester record by running the one-twenty high hurdles In 15.2 sec- onds. He also set a new La Salle field record In the two- twenty low hurdles with a winning time of 24.8 seconds. Bob Lewis and Jim hiagan set new West Chester records only to have them nullified because they failed to place first in their events.

The final competition for the state championship was held at Shippensburg State Teachers College on May 10, 1952. This was the climax of a successful season for the West Chester runners. The Rams gained a total of seventy-six points; Shippensburg, the nearest rival, had a total of forty- one. These West Chester men became State Teachers Col- lege champions:

Coach Earle Water's sextet of club swingers finished the 1952 season with a record of three wins and five defeats. Co-captains for the season were Henry McQuiston and Bob Sicoli.

McQuiston led the team from the number one spot while Sicoli spearheaded the Rams' attack from second posi- tion. Backing the leaders were Bill Stacy and Carl Swartz in third and fourth places respectively.

This season Miss Dorothy Yanlsch coached a veteran Softball team partly composed of seniors Joan Entrlken, Shirley Frederick, Kitty Hendricks, Gloria Krug, Janet Nell, and Peggy Reese. This team had the winning combination of experience and ability. Meeting Ursinus, Swarthmore, and Temple, the players made an impressive record for West Chester.

One of the Music Department's best contribu- tions to the year's fine entertainnnent program was Packin' Up, an original musical comedy written and produced by West Chester students. The book was written by Joyce Swendsen; the music, by John Holmes. Choreography was by Lorraine Auer- waeter, Class of '52, and Peter Miller, Class of '55.

The story concerns two girls who run away from a Boston boarding school to join a traveling show in an attempt to discover all the things they feel they have been missing in life.

Edwin Snyder, Robert Hartman, Jeannette Free, and Joyce Swendsen led in the presentation of a memorable production. Members of the col- lege orchestra supplied the music.

SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA

Mr. Edward Zimmer directed the Symphony Orchestra in their annual March concert. Included In the presentation were "The Rustic Wedding Synnphony," "Kubia Khan," a composition by the director, and a solo sung by Mr. Powell Middleton, who alternates every two years with Mr. Zimmer as conductor of the organization.

SINFONIEHA

In January the Sinfonletta gave its annual concert under the direction of Miss Dorothy hfeim who replaced Mr. Gerald S. Keenan for the first semester.

This organization, composed predominately of stringed instruments, consists of a selected group of musicians from the Symphony Orchestra.

Always enlivening the atmosphere in which it appeared, the marching band brought inspiration to games and pep rallies. Raymond Becker led as field drum major with Kenneth Raessler performing his twirling feats. With its precise forma- tions and unusual presentations, the lively-stepping band, under the direction of Dr. Paul Carson and Dr. Alexander Antonowlch, has never been lacking in unique arrangements to delight Its fans.

One of the last rungs on the ladder was reached by the Senior Class on May 8-9, the awaited Senior Weekend. Prep- orations, starting months In advance, culminated In a week- end designed to make the finishing touch of college social life a time to be remembered and cherished for years to come.

The Senior Ball was held on Friday night at the Phila- delphia Rifle Club in Germantown. Seniors danced to the music of Tony Desmond and his orchestra. There was an Informal dinner-dance on Saturday evening at the Hotel RItz-Carlton, Broad and Walnut Streets, in Philadelphia. A turkey dinner was the main event, followed by an evening of dancing with Ray Hottinger and his orchestra providing the music.

A time for last get-togethers and farewells to college friends, Senior Weekend will be long remembered In the minds of the graduates.
