PKELIMINARY NOTE (AD INTERIM).

With the few exceptions noted below, the Kashmiri port ion of this' work follows the system of spelling employed by 1'Svara Kauila in his Kdsmira-sdbdamrta, and by me in my Essu ys on Kdpriwri Grammar.

Attention r,nay be called to the extremely frequent use by t he author <pf the emphatic suffix y, often employed pleon astically mtftri causa. In the first four chapters this y is regularly represented in the Sanskrit chdya by the wore eva; but fyrom the 5th Chapter on, I have exercised my c iscretion aai editor, in omitting the eva, when the suffix is merely pleonastic. By that time the reader will be ac- nusto Tiid tc> its appearance in this otiose character, and will n ot be tempted to confuse it with other forms.

/Iccording to the Kdsmira-sabddmrta (II, iii, 21; cf. Essa ys, p. 92), when this y is added to a word ending Ui t consonant, u-mdtrd is used as a junction vowel. Ihu s qw«ra kardn^y (kardn + t/), doing indeed. In the

pr^ ient work a is often used instead of u-mdtrd, as in

kantnay (^rri^). This is hardly more than a variation of speWing. We may also note that the author frequently employs present participles ending in -an instead of the.-i?i proscribed by the grammars Thus in verse 418 we have ll^f^ gdlan instead of gdldn JTT^T^T. With emphatic y, we haVe W«ra«r wananay instead of <T«n«lc*J wandwy in verse 408, and1 so on. The conjunctive participle of verbs whose roots contain the letter a, according to the Essays, takes the form karith. Here, however, the author generally writes kaf,r*th. Thus, he writes 4fr«Tx in v. 24. He similarly

../ites the accusative-dative of the second declension v i-mdtrd. Thiis ^tjsrf're nethanq^s, instead of *qv&f nethananis, in v. 88. He often, /• -.-a, changes a fi

i to e, as in »T% garake for »Tf* ff.ara.ki (v. 22) and * karane for *<f«f karani (v. 126). In other respects 1 grammar closely follows the system of Tsva.ra Kaula explained in ray Essay*.

The Sanskrit chdyd is an extremely literal, word for word, translation, prepared under my supervision by M aha- niahopadhyaya Mnkundarama ^'astri. In ec\iting it f o r th press I have freely relaxed the usual rides of Sa ?/ In this I have not studied consistency, my sole aim t eing to assist the reader in disentangling the correspon Kashmiri words from the suffixes with which they encumbered. As originally prepared, the c/iao/a was ii linear, each Sanskrit word being written undor the cor- responding Kashmiri word. Practical conside.cri/ion s typography have led me, against the intention of its ai to print it separately on the page facing the correspoi

WITH ranch regret, I record the death of that excellent scholar Mahamahopadhyaya Mukundarama Sastri, which occurred in the year \'.)'2\, while this work was passing through the press. His knowledge of the Kashmiri language, ancient and modern, was, I believe, unique. I owe much to his teaching and to the help he gave me in the preparation of the chaya printed in the following pages and of the m .,s which formed the basis of the Ivistimlrl dictionary now being published by the Society.

In regard to other points I have nothing to add to the ad interim Preliminary Note issued with the first fasciculus of tin,, \VCKK, except to express my regret that in the earlier pages, a •v-ishmirl types have broken off in the course of printing. These, so far as I have noted them, are entered in the List of Errata and explain its length. In the later pages, the printers have overcome this difficulty with some success.
